I was an avid user for 8 years between 18 and 26 years old.
In the beginning of 2025, I did a 6ish month break for the first time and it was great for me. I got to study more, focus on my routine, saved some money and time, felt more clear headed. I ended up getting back to heavy use by the end of the year, though. At the beginning of this year, I did a one month break or so, but then continued to use too much.
I decided to quit in July and successfully did 10 days sober, then smoked for 2 days, did 90 days sober, smoked for 1 day, did 35 days sober and then smoked for 3 days (until yesterday). It's Thursday now and I'm sober again today.
I'm thinking about giving moderation another try, but I'm scared I'll just go back to unhealthy use. I already feel like I used a little bit too much this weekend, because there were times I thought "I don't really wanna smoke today/right now" but then I did, and kept doing it even if it didn't feel that good.
My main issue is I'm afraid I'll just end up replacing things with weed again.
When I'm sober, I feel like I can do way more stuff, not just productively, but leisurely as well. I found out I prefer being around friends sober rather than high, because that way I can actually keep a conversation going and remember what we talked about. I like playing board games and video games with other people when I'm sober, because I'm better at it and can enjoy it more. I like spending time with my partner sober because I feel like we try more new stuff, we're not as lazy, and we connect more. I prefer to be sober to study because I can actually keep a train of thought. I prefer to watch movies and shows sober because I can understand and remember them better. I prefer to be sober in nature and while interacting with art because I feel like I can be more present. I like to take psychedelics without smoking weed too, because I feel like the experience is clearer. I don't want to use weed to deal with anxiety, depression and stress because I want to develop and strengthen other more reliable and healthier skills to do so. I prefer to spend most of my time sober, in general, because I feel like I'm my best version that way.
What I do like smoking weed for is doing silly stuff. Watching a nonsense movie or show, playing a silly video game or just goofing around are all activities I like doing when I'm high. I also love having some very tasty food when I'm at it. And I mainly like doing it with my partner and, sometimes, with friends. I feel great satisfaction when I do it alone too, but I don't think being high alone is good for me, because it's too difficult to regulate.
I think my biggest problem is, if weed is available, I have a hard time turning it down even if I don't want it. If I have it in my house and I'm alone with it, it feels like it's haunting me and I get impulses to smoke it all the time. If it is available when I'm with people, I find myself going for it even though I'm doing one of the activities I mentioned before and I know I'm gonna have a nicer time if I just stay sober.
I really want to be able to just use it once in a while when I want to have a silly fun time and eat some delicious ice cream with my partner or a couple of friends. How do I change that all-or-nothing relationship I have with the plant?
My boyfriend told me he thinks I need to make changes to my life and my context in order to feel differently about the drug, not necessarily the other way around. I currently don't like the house I live in and I'm tired of living alone. When I'm there, I feel overwhelmed, lonely, tired and depressed. My partner and I are working on moving in together, but there's still a ways to go before we'll be able to do it, so I have to bare with my situation until then. I'm autistic and I struggle with executive dysfunction, so I often have way too hard of a time cleaning, cooking, studying, working, and keeping any routine consistently. So it's safe to say I don't feel good about a huge part of my life, and it makes sense how I'd be vulnerable to seeking weed as a main source of satisfaction, pleasure and relief.
I'm trying to be more physically active, and I've been successful at it so far. I got a climbing buddy and a gym buddy and we go consistently through the week. My biggest issues are motivation to get out of the house (even though I don't like being in my house, go figure) and staying consistent on it, and having other people to keep me accountable and provide me support and company while exercising is huge!
I'm also on therapy and on medical treatment, of course. I'm waiting for a psychiatrist's appointment to make adjustments to my medication because I feel like I'm taking too many meds and it's weighting on me financially without that much benefit. I've also been trying to practice more meditation and take time to have a sleep routine and rest properly.
As of today, I've started coming to my university's library to study and work instead of staying home. I hope it will help me stay focused and avoid distractions (like video games and youtube) since I'm not in my usual environment. I also hope it will help me eat more mindfully and healthily, because I'll be having lunch at my campus restaurant and I won't be snacking all the time since the library doesn't allow food inside. I think it might help me keep things separate too, so that when I'm here (in my study/work setting) I can focus entirely on work, and when I'm home I can focus on resting, enjoying my free time, taking care of my house and myself. I hope I'll feel less lonely throughout the week this way too.
I think those changes have a potential to make my life more meaningful and fulfilling for me, and make me crave the comfort of weed much less.
I'd like to hear about some of other people's strategies too. How do you go about smoking only when you truly want to, and not giving in every time it's available as if it's free money? Have you developed a set of rules you follow strictly? Do you have a strategy to figure out if it's a good time to smoke in every moment of decision? Do you just make it not available when you don't want to smoke?
When I was trying to quit for good, I was able to be around weed and turn it down. But I haven't yet developed the ability to tell myself "not now". It's either "yes always" or "no never". That's what I really want to change. Appreciate all the help and thanks for listening <3
