Y'all missed the joke.

It's because all the stalls fall between urinals, and the mens bathroom code states that you never take an unoccupied urinal between two other guys.

If that is the joke, then it is a stupid one. Men only avoid taking adjacent urinals if they are just next to each other with no walls between them. As long as there is a wall between the urinals, most men are fine with taking adjacent urinals.

Depends. My office has three urinals, but the third one is lowered to a kid's height. Typically the first two urinals fill up first, because they are at an adult height, and the third one last.

i genuinely don't care about standing next to someone at a urinal but i absolutely fucking hate when they (especially a stranger) drop a comment about your cock, it makes me feel very unsafe. wouldn't be surprised if people have been shot over shit like that

Can't say that's ever happened to me (aside from the aforementioned coworker, but it's not like he actually ever looks at our "fingernails" when making those quips) but I can definitely see that being hella awkward if someone is staring down your junk and commenting on it

He said "typically". This is not typical, even if its two normal and one short, people typically skip the middle normal and take the short so there is a gap. Thats just from my 40 years of personal experience though.

I’d say it has more to do with the puritanical way most Americans view nudity. Nudity is far less accepted socially in the US than it is in many other places. I personally am a Queer American man, and avoid standing next to another person at a urinal if I can.

People come in different sizes. I’ve got coworker who needs the shorter urinal, and it doesn’t hurt the rest of us to have one our kids can also use if/when they need it. There’s dignity in independence.

Nobody cares about kids, but at least one urinal must be mounted with the flood rim below 17" or you could be sued for noncompliance with section 605.2 of the 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Don't ask why I know that.

I don't think it's a joke so much as why you'd bother to do this in the first place. Yes, it would be nice not to pee next to another guy. I am not sure if being between two guys taking a dump is a lot better though, due to smells.

Eh it's still pretty common to not, in my experience.

My favourite bar has 3 urinals in a small space and if you take the middle you're gonna be rubbing shoulders. It's always empty.

Mostly depends on venue and spacing.

Yea I'm not concerned about taking adjacent urinals, but I do avoid it if there are open non short urninal's available. Otherwise I just fill in between 2 guys. You just have to do the basic math when going into the bathroom about where you are going to pee. If everything except 1 is taken, you just take the open one and no one gets upset about that.

Nope, we take every other urinal whether or not there are partitions. With that said, partitions aren't the same as stalls, and this setup would mean there are no adjacent urinals.
