Check out the Yankees bunt defense compared to the Dodgers. Jazz Chisholm and Kiké Hernandez start in the exact same spot. Yet when Kiké spots the bunt, he sprints to first to get the out while Jazz just wanders around aimlessly and the runner reaches. This among other things has to change.

Hal is a businessman, not a fan

Once you realize that you get it. Cashman gets him 90 plus wins and a round or two in the playoffs every year . Attendance never dips and we buy the most expemsive tix in the league, pay $50 for parking, $20 for sausages, etc.

He didn't make a billion in tech or run a hedge fund...the Yankees IS his business.

He hides in Tampa, makes a mea culpa appearance once a year and let's Cashman and Boone take the heat...a championship would be nice., but $$ is what matters .. And we keep showing up...

Can the Yankees Do Some Smart Spending like the Rays?

Once again, the big bucks Yankees failed to use their money to go all the way. They spent $3.2 million per win during the regular season. Contrast that with the Rays at $1.1 million per win and the Brewers at $1.4.

At least the Yanks did better than the Mets, the least-efficient MLB team once again, spending $4.7 million per win. The Blue Jays also threw money away -- $3.65 million per win.

The Guardians were the most cost-efficient team in baseball this year – spending a mere $934,118 per win – the only team under $1 million.

This is my ninth year measuring costs per win. I use Spotrac for salaries, because they measure all expenses, including injured and “buried,” meaning players getting paid who are now longer with the club. The Marlins, for example, with the second-smallest payroll in baseball, used $10 million of their overall $82.8 million to pay part of Giancarlo Stanton’s salary as a New York Yankee, thanks to a deal worked out by Yankee HOF Derek Jeter.

A lot of fans don’t like my efficiency measures. The Rays in Tampa Bay are always near the best in this category, but their fans constantly complain that the owners don’t spend more to win the elusive World Series.

Still, the measure reveals how smart front offices in this era can navigate this era with wide gaps between the biggest and the smallest payrolls. The Rays, Guardians and Brewers are among the leaders year after year.

Baseball is the only major American sport without a salary cap, and owners have vowed to force a cap in the upcoming negotiations with the union. A cap is likely to include a floor, meaning the cheapest teams like the Marlins and A’s would be forced to spend more.

Certainly, the numbers reveal consistently stupid behavior. The big-market, big-spending Angels haven’t been in the playoffs since 2014. For all the time I’ve been measuring, they have been among the least efficient teams, spending huge sums for poor results. This year, they spent $2.8 MPW – more than twice as much as the playoff Guardians, Rays, White Sox and Brewers. The Halos now have a new owner and perhaps things will improve.

Smart spending can get a team into the playoffs, but when it comes to going all the way, big bucks still pave the way for ultimate victory. The last time a small-market team won a World Series was 2015 with the Royals. Will this year be different? Some union leaders may hope so – so they can claim there’s no need for a salary cap.

Complete stats can be found at Marlins Maniacs. Scroll to the bottom for the  team-by-team numbers.

Is there a Matt Blake of hitting coaches?

Discussions about Aaron Boone aside, the bats simply did not show up in the ALDS. Matt Blake has done wonders for our pitching game. Is there an equivalent coach that can rejuvenate our hitting game?

Are the Yankees approaching hitting wrong?

The Yankees have been a very successful team since 2010, reaching the postseason 13 times, but they haven’t won the World Series. Only the Dodgers have done better with 14.

The Yankees organization emphasizes home runs. From a run value per event standpoint they are the best.

Event Approximate Run Value
Home Run (HR) 1.90 – 1.93 runs
Triple (3B). ~1.03 runs
Double (2B). ~ 0.80 runs
Single (1B) ~0.46 runs
Walk / HBP (BB) ~0.33 runs

Leaders in MLB in 2026

HOU 226
NYY 223
CHC 220
CIN 213
CHW 211

LAD had 205 and TBR had 169

Probably most people would agree that wRC+ is the best metric to evaluate a batter, I agree.

The top 6 teams in 2026

CHC 114
LAD 111
MIL 107
HOU 105
CHW 104
TBR 104

Yankees had a 101

For OBP

MIL .341
CHC .339
LAD .338
PIT. .330
TBR .326

Yankees .310

And for boring BA

MIL .258
TBR .258
LAD .257
COL .254
PIT .253

Yankees .235

In the postseason, pitching is much better. Pitchers often make a batter look foolish when they know they are trying to hit a home run. Of course a batter can and does often capitalize on a mistake. IMO all the metrics are important, but contact hitting becomes extremely valuable in the postseason. I think this is one of the biggest areas the Yankees need to make a change.

The Case for moving on from Cashman

There’s been a lot of deserved discourse about the job security of Aaron Boone. Make no mistake about it: I believe Boone is an unremarkable manager who’s had a major hand in making this team soft and unprepared.

But, I’m not sure firing Boone is the answer because Brian Cashman is the one who will replace him.

Who was the person who wanted to move on from Joe Girardi and hired Boone in his place? I don’t think Cashman deserves another chance to try and get it right; instead, Hal Steinbrenner is likely going to allow Cashman to pick the next successor for the next decade of Yankees baseball.

My issue with Hal isn’t that he’s cheap. He’s decided to shoot himself in the foot by wanting to stay under the luxury tax threshold (and he has gone over numerous times).

The issue is that Cashman isn’t the person to fill out a competitive roster with those limitations in place. He tried with the Baby Bombers, and fielded a team comprised almost entirely of busts, or players who did not live up the hype Cashman and his front office hyped up:

C Gary Sanchez
1B Greg Bird
2B Gleyber Torres (good player/Yankee but they messed with him far too often & was not the player hyped up to be)
3B Miguel Andujar (same as Torres)
LF Clint “Legendary Bat Speed” Frazier

He’s tried filling out the roster with trades, some of them the worst of his career: Brandon Drury, J.A. Happ, Lance Lynn, James Paxton, Rougned Odor, Joey Gallo, Josh Donaldson (he’s no Gio Urshella), Andrew Benindentti, Scott Effross, Frankie Montas, Alex Verdugo, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Devin Williams, and Ryan McMahon.

He’s also the man who extended Aaron Hicks and had to give DJ an extra year because of the tax.

Cashman may not be out of touch, but he’s most definitely lost a lot zip on the fastball.

There’s also the issue of our farm system, both domestic and internationally. They come up to the roster and almost always regress from their play in the minors, which is to be expected but only up to a point.

Jasson Dominguez is not The Martian, Lombard had a shit load of errors, and Spencer Jones can’t play defense. In fact, most of their prospects come up as poor defenders. Ben Rice can’t play 1B well, either. There’s also the issue of guys playing out of position to “help” address some messes Cashman made in the first place.

It’s just staggering to me how much damage this man has inflicted on the organization throughout the last decade.

He has to go. Has to. He won’t, though, until he decides to retire. We’re stuck with a GM who has shown he can no longer build championship teams.

Bill Madden: Yankees need to dump Boone and call Buck Showalter

Thumbnail
nydailynews.com
426 Upvotes

It has now become an annual ritual. A Yankee team with the second or third highest payroll in baseball of over $300 million does a postseason pratfall and legions of Yankee fans are crying out to the heavens: “Bring us the head of Aaron Boone!”

Until now their pleas have gone on deaf ears because Brian Cashman loves Aaron Boone and Hal Steinbrenner loves both of them and therefore, unlike the days of George Steinbrenner, who ran through managers like yesterday’s dirty laundry, there has been no accountability for failure in the Bronx.

But as much as I like Aaron Boone personally, as much as I think he’s a good person, this latest Yankee postseason failure — which ended with Ben Rice in the on-deck circle while .211-hitter Trent Grisham, whom Boone inexplicably had put in the leadoff spot, struck out for the third time in the game, leaving the potential tying run against the Tampa Bay Rays in Jazz Chisolm stranded at second base — has to have been the last straw for Hal Steinbrenner.

What Non-Boone or Cashman Change Could Yankees Announce That Would Be A Game-Changer?

I think Hal wants to come up with something that he thinks would appease fans but isn't willing to fire Cashman or Boone. Is there anything he could announce that would make you think he understands what is happening and is willing to make big changes?

Aaron Boone has 5 Records: 1st Manager in Yankees History with no rings after managing 5 seasons. He is also the 1st Manager with no rings after his 6th, after his 7th, after his 8th, and after his 9th seasons. He is the first manager in Yankees history with a losing record in the postseason (27-30)

What grade would you give the Yankees 2026 season?

Record: 93-68 2nd in AL East/2nd best record in AL

Playoffs: 2-3

Judge played just 66 games this year and Rice was the only player on the Opening Day Starting Lineup to not hit the IL this year. They also arguably had the best rotation in baseball this year.

They won 93 games this year 2nd best in the AL which is a great considering the injuries but they got embarrassingly swept by Tampa pretty much the same results as last year.

IF/When Boone and Cashman return, will fans stop going to games?

There has been a lot more speculation this offseason about their job security, but as we head to almost a week after elimation and a long lockout looming, it would appear both men will be returning. Wondering how fans will react, will attendance take a hit? TV ratings or once the season begins, fans will forgive and forget.
