Is it reasonable to speculate that the “get off your A swing, daddy hack, ignore the situation” hitting approach that the majority of the Sox lineup employs would have more success during lower leverage regular season games vs the playoffs?
Does it seem plausible that we could see a return to form for this strategy early next season and then possibly face this same ultimate fate come next October?
In lower leverage regular season games you will face pitchers that might be working on keeping their pitch count down and are more likely to challenge the batter. You will run into pitchers with command issues. Air temps are higher, fly balls fly further, and hitters are more likely to see pitchers that are quite frankly not as good. All of these can drastically aid a batter that is going to try and hit the ball out of the ballpark with every swing they take.
During high leverage and playoff games, in most cases hitters are facing the best arms, on the best teams, for shorter outings, at max effort with very complete scouting reports on how they plan to attack the opposition.
If Getz and Co add a corner OF this offseason, I sincerely hope it is someone with some bat control, discipline and willingness to cut down on their swing when the situation demands it.
I’ve watched at least one hundred Roch ABs at UCLA and feel like he definitely has the hit tool that should be adaptable to become an elite situational hitter but I’m not sure he will take that approach, especially if it is not encouraged organizationally… much like Meidroth. Chase clearly has the ability to take a B or C swing when the situation calls for it, but we saw him time and time again attempt to put the ball on the concourse with a runner on 3B and less than two outs when all the Sox needed in that situation was for him to do a job.
I have not seen enough of Bonemer to know what kind of advanced approach he might be able to take. The walk numbers are promising but some of the biggest free swingers are kings of three true outcome baseball. But, it is possible that Roch and Caleb are both pure enough hitters to solve this clear imbalance just by replacing two free swingers with them in the lineup over the course of 2027.
BUT (BIG BUT) that is assuming that the front office and Shomon aren’t actively encouraging the all or nothing, daddy hack approach… which there is very little evidence that says the contrary.
