Creative DynamicDock; i think i cooked with this one!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I know it's not an entirely new concept, but I wanted it so badly that I built one with zero coding knowledge. It all goes back to a post by @aureliengmz on Threads nearly 10 months ago showing a similar idea, and now I'm making it the way I want with the help of claude!

It replaces the native dock with one that looks the same, but icons expand into mini panels i call (DynamicFeatures):
a music player with swipe-to-change volume, a calendar with gregorian + hijri dates (i’m Arab), quick notes, most-used apps, settings shortcuts, and more.

What do you think?

Edit: To clear things up, I'm a designer, and every design decision here was mine: the look, the feel, the animations, every detail. AI was used for the coding, to implement my vision. Also, this is a personal project for my own Mac and isn't available publicly right now. Thanks for all the feedback, good and bad!

Help How do you keep your Mac running smoothly long-term?

Hey guys,

2 years ago, I switched from Windows to macOS (MacBook M4 Pro), and I'm loving it!

I have a question about how you maintain good performance on macOS.

When I used Windows, I occasionally did a hard reset (erasing everything) and reinstalled the system to keep it running smoothly.

I searched the internet, and everyone says you typically never do that on a Mac (and I love that).

But what about files, cache, and all the other stuff that stays after you remove apps?

Does macOS handle this on its own, which is why you never do a hard reset?

What do you do to keep your Mac's performance optimal?

Any advice would be very appreciated.

Thank you

Feature Shutdown Timer

I was looking for a way to fall asleep to a show on my laptop when I travel and I discovered this little trick.

Here is how you can set a sleep timer using Terminal:

  1. Open the Terminal app (found in Applications > Utilities).
  2. Type the following command, replacing [minutes] with the amount of time you want to wait before your Mac goes to sleep: sudo shutdown -s +[minutes]
  3. Press Return.
  4. You will be prompted to enter your administrator password to confirm the command.

For example, sudo shutdown -s +10 will put your Mac to sleep in 10 minutes.

If you need to cancel the timer before it goes off, you can enter: sudo killall shutdown

Enjoy!

Found these two Mac OS X 10.5.2 install disks (one is system, i haven’t looked and i can’t remember what is on disc 2).

This came with a MBP 15” at the time (bought in the NL).

I tossed them into a superdrive and created images, should i toss those or does anyone ever have a use for the real discs?

Help Keyboard shortcuts for safari profiles

Anyone using safari profiles ever run into any trouble with keyboard shortcuts? They default to inane shortcuts like option command shift 3. When I switch them around to other open shortcuts, they fluctuate based on whether or not safari is open or double on the same one.

Anyone able to provide any help on this matter?

Help Help with macbook air on macOS 27.0.1 needed !

I use the 3 finger swipe to switch between full screens. I was using Logic Pro in full screen when my display randomly switched to the main screen and now I cant swipe between any displays. I have about 5 hours of unsaved work on a project in logic pro and I can't even access it to save it! I haven't restarted my laptop for that reason. Ive checked the trackpad settings and messed around with them but nothing has helped. I can't find any recourses online for this specific thing at all. Any help is greatly appreciated! I don't want to lose this project!

Help System Data Taking up over 198 GB, need help

Post image
359 Upvotes

I’ve reached the end of the internet trying to figure this out (including searching posts & resources already addressed on this subreddit), to very little avail. No one seems to have had THIS big of a problem. See my list below of what I’ve done so far, which maybe helped clear up a couple of gigs but then it goes right back up after a day, so I do it all over again and then bang my head on more walls. I’m obviously not techie, but my husband is to some extent & even he can’t figure it out.

If it matters, I’m using a MacBook Air about 2-3 years old. Apple M1 chip, 8GB memory, running Sequoia 15.4.1 (I can’t perform updates bc I don’t have enough disk space ironically). I use it casually, mostly for internet, word processing, spreadsheets, and I do have a fair amount of larger art files on there (Adobe Creative Suite which I can’t even OPEN now bc of lack of space). But as you can see that seems to not be the problem, those GB are minuscule compared to my System Data. Here’s what I’ve tried (and yes I emptied the trash & rebooted multiple times afterwards):

- Cleared all system & app caches (~/Library/Caches)

- Deleted all user logs (~/Library/Logs)

- I did not delete any system logs from (/var/log/) bc I was a bit afraid to, but that seemed to be only a handful or 2 of MB, anyway

- I tried to remove old Time Machine backups in Terminal (tmutil listlocalsnapshots /) but it said I had none

- I deleted all downloads

- I deleted applications I don’t need (including some I do! Out of desperation). But the largest applications e.g., Garage Band it won’t even let me delete

- I even tried to delete old iOS backups from my phone but I didn’t have any anyway.

What should my next steps be? I have NO CLUE and am constantly frustrated out of my mind. Anyone?? 🙏

Discussion M1 8GB performance on Sonoma vs Golden Gate

Hi guys,

Unfortunately, my recent MBP broke, so I picked up a really cheap used MacBook Air M1 with 8GB RAM just so I can keep working while saving up for a new Pro.

I mostly do software development, so 8GB isn't really enough to begin with. But I remembered it was enough to get work done three years ago on the exact same model, right before I got the Pro with 16GB RAM.

I updated to Golden Gate and started working, but it quickly became very slow as soon as I had IntelliJ and a single Safari tab open. I had to pay constant attention to closing every background task just to free up some RAM. It started feeling like a 2018 Intel MacBook Air lol.

Even though it's obviously not the right hardware for my workload, I couldn't really believe it was that bad.

I saw people online recommending macOS 14 or 15 for my device, so I decided to do a clean install with Sonoma.

I couldn't believe it at first, but the difference is night and day. Obviously, an older, less demanding OS is expected to perform better, but I can easily do my work now without constant slowdowns or freezes. I don't know what's going on with Golden Gate, especially since the memory pressure and swap usage seem to be around the same as before.
Could also be related to CPU/GPU being more stressed by liquid glass, though.

Did any of you guys experience the same thing?
Can I upgrade to macOS Sequioa without sacrificing performance?

Bug transfer troubles

it was around this weekend when i noticed my m1 mba is having trouble with transfers. i'd copy files from a device to its internal drive and it will reach the near end, but won't finish. previewing files take a long time to load as if its was not an m1. copying from one location to another in the same internal drive also take a while. same with copying to an SSD. installing an app will also have trouble and would required multiple restarts of finder.

anyone know how to fix?

Bug Underscrolling/Overscrolling in Native Apps since 27

Unfortunately ever since updating to MacOS 27 I found that scrolling while releasing my fingers tend to feel laggy or isn't continuous. Curiously this doesn't happen in Safari or Photos, but almost every other native app has this problem (including documents in Preview and Mail). The phenomena is best describe as this: an unexpected pause or a shorter-than-expected scrolled distance occurs while I'm scrolling, and the next scroll tend to compensate by going down (or up) more than I anticipated. Such scrolling roughness disappears when I change the refresh rate to 60Hz, so I don't think it is a hardware issue. Is this confirmed to be a MacOS 27-exclusive promotion bug, since I only noticed it after this upgrade? This is on my M3 Pro MacBook Pro by the way.

Help Apple Mail app giving up?

I have been using the default apple Mail app for years - yes I know its basic and not great but my needs are pretty regular use cases.

Is it just me or does it have a very aggressive spam filter?

Also the ordering of emails never seems to work. Especially on All Sent across all linked inboxes, it never shows this is order despite sorting by date, newest on top, don't group by conversation etc...

Is it just me that finds it annoying? Any recommendation on a better similarly lightweight email client, but I just want basic features like sort and a way to intelligently apply spam filters.

Help How can I set my MacBook make LibreOffice the default application for documents?

I recently switched from MS Word to LibreOffice, but sometimes I forget to open the menu to open it with LibreOffice. I'd like to have Word (and .odt, ideally) documents open in LibreOffice by default, but I can't remember how. Where can I change this in my settings? I'm using a MacBook Pro with Tahoe 26.6.2.

Feature Loving my new MacBook Air, and keep finding new features

Post image
26 Upvotes

I’ve pretty much been doing school as a CS student on my iPad Pro, and it’s been doable with the school computers, but recently I decided to get the MacBook Air and it just came in this past week. I’m loving all the different ecosystem features! I especially like to use it with my iPad both in continuity and sidecar.

I noticed today though, when you use your iPad as another monitor, you can turn on the touch bar from the previous MacBook pro! Like when using VSCode or Apple Music or files, etc… there’s a set of custom tools for each app!

Super nifty🤓

This is just one of the many different features I’ve found 🧐
