Equipment Glass Carboys Breaking

I didn’t know it was common for glass carboys to break until I searched this sub. I inherited a brewing setup (a 10 gallon pot, 5 glass carboys, a few kegs, and some other miscellaneous stuff) so I didn’t do much research into the equipment. I’ve been brewing gluten free beer and cider, and I have lost 3 batches due to my carboys breaking. The first one was me being dumb and thinking I could cool my beer after a boil in the carboy running cold water over it, the carboy cracked pretty quick. Then this morning I was getting a batch of cider started, I was moving the carboy into place and it slipped and bumped into another carboy (my first attempt at a GF Belgian Wit that was nearly done fermenting) and both carboys exploded! Luckily I didn’t get cut by the glass. I’ll be ordering a stainless steel brew tech brew bucket today, I’m done with glass!

Equipment Grain Mill survey

Tragedy has struck. My local homebrew shop is closing.

To best manage the impending economics of the new situation I'm considering starting to buy grain in bulk (at least having one or two base grains around in bins). Does anyone have a grain mill they particularly love? One they swear is just awful? Any and all advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Equipment Oxygen has been game changing

For a while, I could never get my beer to have really clean fermentation. I calculated yeast counts and generally would pitch more, I have a DIY fermentation chamber which can control temp very well, I cool my wort to pitching temp overnight before I pitch, but I was still getting fruity esters. Don’t get me wrong, these other things have been immensely helpful. But after all that, step changes in improving the quality of my beer are harder and harder to find.

Then I started pumping O2 (after cooling to pitching temp, right before pitching). It has dramatically accelerated the rate of fermentation (I’m hitting FG in usually less than a week, usually it’s mostly done after 3-4 days). It has also significantly reduced the amount of fermentation character I get when attempting to produce ‘clean’ beer (I don’t do this for hefes, saisons, etc). Overall, fermentation just goes far smoother. I still give my ales 2 ish weeks or so to clean up in the fermenter, but it’s using sitting at FG for a while.

Surprising cheap to get this going.

O2 regulator, tubing, and diffusion stone $30

https://a.co/d/0fadaAuL

O2 tank you can get the bernzomatic O2 from Ace.

Anything else you guys have done which has giving you notable improvements in quality or solved issues once you have a decent system already up and running?

Equipment Got a kegerator? Clean your lines!

I recently made my first beer for an AHA competition (got a 35/50, which is not too shabby!) and while it was nearly done lagering I noticed that my tap had started to leak a bit. It's time to replace some o rings. To prevent the leaking, I swapped over to my less frequently used tap and after purging the lines a little bit I had another taste. The clean, moderately malty and lightly hopped festbier I poured was now an acrid, skunky drink. Any sweetness from the other tap was gone and it was overpowered by harsh, unwelcome flavors.

It was a huge contrast of flavor, and definitely a lesson to me on how important it is to have clean lines!

Equipment Oven as an adequate method of sterilising a demijohn?

I'm looking to brew a small test batch (think 1l or even less) of alcohol and I'm having issues with how I would go about sterilising my vessel (the vessel I want to use is a 1l or 1.5l demijohn without braiding).

The biggest issue with sterilisation is the fact that I can't seem to find starsan in small enough quantities for sale that would fit my experimental needs and the starsan on sale in quantities of a litre and more costs around 40$ per bottle, which is an insane price and would be more expensive than the rest of the project combined.

I was therefore thinking about whether I could sterilise my demijohn by first rinsing it in warm water, then placing it in a cold oven and heating it up to 100 or 120°c to sterilise it by heat. I understand that glass and heat changes don't really like eachother, but I already have experience with putting ikea glass bottles in my dishwasher and then baking them in an oven and they withstood it just fine.

Does anyone here have experience with using an over for sterilising? If yes, would you recommend it?

Equipment Recommend a glycol chiller?

I’ve been brewing for a few years now and have an anvil bucket fermenter with a cooling jacket and cooling rod system setup. I don’t have the space for a fermentation chamber, but had considered that at one point.

I really enjoy making lagers, and have been getting great results with keeping fermentation temps in the low 50s. It’s just a pain because I’ve been having to refresh a cooler filled with ice on the regular. I’m thinking about getting a glycol chiller so I can set and forget my brews, leave the house for a few days, or otherwise not have to babysit the fermenter nearly as much.

I think at most, I’ll have two 5 gallon fermenters going at a time. What’s a good glycol chiller for my needs? Are there any particular features that are must haves? Any brands that are great, or any that should be avoided?

Equipment Purging Corny Kegs (an experiment with data!)

TL;DR - 2 min purge at 10psi CO2 will get your O2 to 4 ppb

So it comes up frequently here questions about excluding oxygen from your process and there’s some differences of opinion on what is needed or best practices.

So I decided to put my process to the test and see exactly where I land, and pass that info on to others. I am a chemistry professor who runs our fermentation sciences lab and so I have access to equipment that the average homebrewer will not, in this case, an Anton-Paar Qbox, which can measure CO2 and O2 in packaged products as well as in line during varying stages of the brewing process.

For this experiment, I washed 4 corny kegs with PBW, rinsed and sanitized using saniclean. I used Northern Brewers keg washer for all three cycles.

The kegs were then purged by applying CO2 at 10psi through the out post and venting the in post into a bucket of sani. I ran a stop watch and then connected the vent post to the QBOX and ran the rinse cycle (which is frequently used to check for O2 stability prior to running a CO2 measurement). According to AP, the sensor is designed to measure both in solution and in gas phase.

Data:

Trial 1: 3 min purge time. DO was 4 ppb Trial 2: run for 1 min increments After 1 min DO was 115ppb After 2 min DO was 8 ppb

Trial 3: run for 2 min straight, DO was 4ppb Trial 4: repeat trial 3 for consistency, DO was 4 ppm

For reference, Budweiser is considered one of the consistent packaged products and consistently hits about 21ppb.

I know there’s not enough trials to run statistics here, but I only needed 4 kegs ready today, so that’s all I did.

Equipment Plate Filtering Grain Fines

I brewed a Marzen last month that ended up with grain fines in the final product - I have had two recent batches where this has been an issue.

I assume I can filter it all out using a couple of plate filters? Any idea on sizing (in microns) of the filter pads? I'd like to get as much of it out as I can, without fighting clogs in the filter pads.

Equipment Guess I’ve been lucky disinfecting

I’ve made 5 one-gallon batches of melomel/wine over the past two months, and am just now discovering OneStep doesn’t REALLY disinfect.

For clarity, I’ve been dipping all of my equipment in OneStep for like 10 seconds.

Somehow I didn’t end up with any mold, and nothing tastes off. From today on, I’ll be using StarSan, guess I’ve just been lucky?

Equipment FERMNTR grew tastebuds!

Thumbnail
apps.apple.com
22 Upvotes

Firstly, I want to thank all hundreds of users, mainly from Reddit, who have used FERMNTR for tracking their fermentations over the last year since it was released. I have gotten a lot of amazing feedback and engagement which feels awesome for an indie dev!

But, for the last months I have been working on a MAJOR update that is now live! Now FERMNTR has support for a full recipe-builder, brew-day/brew-session, inventory, etc! And ofc it is tied neatly with the previous fermentation functionality! And this is no AI-vibe-coded crap, I have spent hundreds of hours coding this and adding all products, beer styles, equipment, etc…

The big thing that made me add this is that I think that other recipe builders focus too much on math, and not enough about taste, so FERMNTR’s recipe engine is Taste-first. It still calculates all the math in the background, and lets you see it if you want, but has taste and sensory in the forefront. It even has a visualiser so you can see what your beer will look like when finished!

On top of that I have implemented some sweet functionality like live activities when brewing, explanations for water salts (so you know WHY you add certain salts), a Mac app so you can write recipes on your computer, and a lot more!

And the price? Not changed. Still a big free version that supports up to 10 recipes, and only 1$/month for premium.

If you use iPhone, iPad or Mac, please check it out on the AppStore! And if you miss some functionality, or have an awesome idea for improvements, let me know!

Equipment Budget temperature controlled fermentors?

I'm thinking into getting a temperature controlled fermentor. I would do 2-3 batches through winter and maybe 1 during the summer. I have a basement with semi stable temperature. During the winter it gets to 14°C(57F) and during the summer is at around 27°C(80°C).

I have only done IPA yeasts, as they seemed easiest and fastest. I looked into heated bucket buddy from fermzilla but I'm just not sure. I used plastic wine transfer fermentor but it was way too wide to use, I always had issues with remaining 8l(2gal).

Making a isolated chamber for fermentor is not an issue, but I would also like to minimize oxygen contact during the bottling and this is my main concern. Would Bucket buddy be suitable solution?

Seems like it's not best for dry hopping as it would require lifting whole top off but I somewhat figured that everyone including me likes the beer more after few months when aggressive dry hop aromas disappear.

I also researched plastic pressure fermentors, but they seem way too much of an investment(all the CO2 accessories, fridge and heating pad) for essentially bottling 3,5 cases of beer.

But I am open to suggestions.

Equipment Brewing equipment? Looking for people with experience on prosumer or lower end pro equipment

It has been years since I homebrewed. Plastic primary, carboy for a secondary. The typical newer brewer.

Moving into a house again soon, have a great amount of disposable cash, and want to get some decent prosumer or even lower end professional equipment. Looking at pros and cons for different equipment in the probably $5,000 range. Could go lower, but even up to twice that is possible.

For brewers doing a more pro setup, what is your experience?

I have started research and have Blichmann, Spike, Brewtech, X3, and others, but really want a from the field view of the pros and cons of different equipment.

Equipment Spunding valve failure

I've used this spunding valve from kegland for like 5 brews now. I attached this after active fermentation started and the gauge is not reacting. I pulled the pressure release and pressure is definitely building. My last brew the fermentation got too high and got into it. I cleaned and sanitized it the best I could. Anybody dealt with this, can help me troubleshoot? I really don't want to have to buy another one. Thank y'all!

Equipment Recently moved to South Korea, looking for good no rinse sanitizer solutions.

As the title states, I recently moved. Starsan is $55 a liter and I don't know if I can get access to chemisan or any of the other big name common sanitizers. What recommendations do you have?

Equipment Help Me with Nice Equipment

As the title: help me pick some nice shit. Budget is not really an issue (it's not for me, I'm advising a family member).

Requirements are:

Electric (240v, multiple outlets available)

Separate Mash/Boil (no lifting of grain baskets)

15-20 gallons (10-15 gallon batches)

Nice to haves are:

Nice controllers

Bottom drains

Grain door?

Able to do 5 gallon batches

Context and info:

I'm a somewhat-experienced brewer, just wrapped my 61st batch since 2023. I started all grain, BIAB on my stove top with a 5 gallon pot, moved onto a full 3 vessel setup with a 10 gallon kettle on top of propane, an igloo water cooler mash tun, and that same 5 gallon as a HLT. Then the third kid came and now I'm on a second hand Anvil doing full volume mashes to save time and space.

Just had my dad out for two brews and he wants to set up a large, 3 vessel, professional-feeling setup at the family ranch to "have the boys (my brothers and I) out a few times a year to do big batches for everyone to share."

Obviously, I would benefit from having access to those tools a scant 90 minutes away as well.

I managed to splash the shit out of myself and give myself a good scalding squeezing the grain on my Anvil, and that plus his back has completely turned him off to the idea of removable grain baskets.

He's looking at pre-setup options like spike and brewtools, and, honestly, the high quality stuff is just out of my experience range. I get the fly sparge process, and have done it successfully across two dozen batches, but I don't know what I don't know about the nice stuff - my old system was hacked together and it took me a dozen batches just to get my processes down and make necessary modifications. He's looking to me for advice, but I just don't have much to give and YouTube seems to be scant on reviews (or maybe my keyword searching is off).

I'm not sure how often my brothers will actually get together to brew, but we host big parties at the ranch that I've brewed for, and we go through 15-20 gallons of beer, so even the bare minimum of brewing for parties twice a year will guarantee some use (and give my poor Anvil a break).

As a final note, my dad is at the point in his life where if he's gonna get a tool, he wants the highest quality (within reason) version that automates as much as possible. Honestly, he's earned it, but I just don't know how to help make that happen.

Anyone have experience with the nicer systems, words of wisdom, or advice?

Equipment Is anyone using the 16 gallon Vevor conical?

Has anyone picked up one of the 16 gallon Vevor conical fermenters? I currently do all my fermenting in kegs with floating dip tubes and it’s been wonderfully easy and effective. But, like any hobby, I’m always looking for something new. Anyone tried them out?

Equipment First Keezer Build Advice!

Hello, fellow brewers!

Finally, i bought a freezer, some planks and ready to build my first keezer. The collar will be slightly smaller than the freezer rectangle, because the walls of the freezer is about 5cm, i thought i'd make it closer to the inner rectangle. Planks are 30mm by 130mm.

I am planning to make it airtight as possible.

But i've got a question:

How should i attach it to the freezer itself? Well, the answer is obvious - silicone. But the springs on the lid is pretty strong and i am afraid, that the collar will be under constant tension. I let the springs a bit loose, playing with the nut holding it. Should i get something MUCH more cohesive than the silicone?

Thanks in advance!
