Equipment FERMNTR grew tastebuds!

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fermntr/id6752614213

Firstly, I want to thank all hundreds of users, mainly from Reddit, who have used FERMNTR for tracking their fermentations over the last year since it was released. I have gotten a lot of amazing feedback and engagement which feels awesome for an indie dev!

But, for the last months I have been working on a MAJOR update that is now live! Now FERMNTR has support for a full recipe-builder, brew-day/brew-session, inventory, etc! And ofc it is tied neatly with the previous fermentation functionality! And this is no AI-vibe-coded crap, I have spent hundreds of hours coding this and adding all products, beer styles, equipment, etc…

The big thing that made me add this is that I think that other recipe builders focus too much on math, and not enough about taste, so FERMNTR’s recipe engine is Taste-first. It still calculates all the math in the background, and lets you see it if you want, but has taste and sensory in the forefront. It even has a visualiser so you can see what your beer will look like when finished!

On top of that I have implemented some sweet functionality like live activities when brewing, explanations for water salts (so you know WHY you add certain salts), a Mac app so you can write recipes on your computer, and a lot more!

And the price? Not changed. Still a big free version that supports up to 10 recipes, and only 1$/month for premium.

If you use iPhone, iPad or Mac, please check it out on the AppStore! And if you miss some functionality, or have an awesome idea for improvements, let me know!

Looks very nice. Any plans on releasing this on Android as well?

Yes, I do, in the future, when I get time 😊

Is there a 10gallon limit on recipes and equipment for the free edition? Or is that universal?

u/PontusFermntr Jun 02 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

It depends on the brew system you have selected. For example, for a 100L brewzilla you can select up to 21 gallons/80L.

The only recipe limit in the free version is that you can only create 10 recipes. Otherwise it has full functionality.

Gotcha, I selected Generic Three-Vessel RIMS system but can only go up to 10gal when I edit the batch size (for context I only brew 12 gallons)

Any plans to support the Tilt hydrometer?

2

u/PontusFermntr Jun 02 '26

Hm, you are right, I should probably increase the maximum size for that one. Thanks for letting me know!

Yes, it is in the works, I just need to buy a tilt and test it out.

Hey! Just wanted to let you know that FERMNTR 2.1 has now been released with support for custom brew systems. So you can add whatever units you want for you brew systems.

2

u/Iwasalurkeronce Jun 02 '26

Looking forward to giving this a test run!

Do you have any plans for TILT integration?

2

u/PontusFermntr Jun 02 '26

Please do!

The app currently supports RAPT (for fermentation), and Brewzilla for brewing. TILT is in the works, but not released yet.

Absolutely what perfect timing for me to make a new beer this week thank you!

Just downloaded and really looking forward to using it.

Any suggestions on how one might create a modified system profile? We have 20gal Spike Trio with a 30gal SS Brewtech mash tun. For now I used the 30gal spike profile.

Also, looking forward to the Tilt integration.

Great feedback! I will look into more customization for brew systems, and looks like I need to up the prioritization for the Tilt, its more popular than I expected.

2

u/fxm727 Jun 02 '26

Yep! It’s a popular little gadget.

Any chance of a download/print option down the road? We like to have a physical copy of things, I know, we’re old, but also offering us the chance to hand off to someone or share digitally.

2

u/PontusFermntr Jun 02 '26

Yup, that is actually a function for the upcoming release (print and shareable recipes). But, I do wish you would try to brew with the app as well! Even though it is never wrong to have a physical version on paper as well.

u/fxm727 Jun 02 '26

Will definitely run it on its own. We just put in an order for more ingredients so a brew day is coming up.

Updated and put it to use for today’s brew day. I’ll report back to you when all is done.

1

u/PontusFermntr Jun 10 '26

Sounds great! All feedback is greatly appreciated 🙏 what did you brew?

2

u/fxm727 Jun 10 '26

In the process of a Czech Premium Pale Lager ( BJCP 2021 3B) One of my notes, actually, since it’s not in the style option.

1

u/PontusFermntr Jun 10 '26

Sounds awesome! Czech pale lager is available, but I guess you are missing the ”premium” variant?

2

u/fxm727 Jun 10 '26

Yes. A tad bit more aggressive than a standard pale.

Awesome App! It would be cool to create Gluten Free recipes because that’s all I’m going to be brewing. But I know I’m in the minority so I understand if it’s not reasonable to add.

1

u/PontusFermntr Jun 02 '26

Hm, interesting angle! I never thought of that. How do you do a gluten free recipe? I have done some, but I just did a normal recipe, and then added clarity ferm, but I guess that only reduces it to very low gluten, not removed it completely. If you have any links about the subject I will totally look into it!

2

u/brakattak25 Jun 02 '26

This website Gluten Free Homebrewing has a lot of great information. The process isn’t that much different, it’s just the grains that are used. So you can use Millet, Sorghum, Rice, Oats (that are certified GF), or any other non gluten grain. There are some differences like needing enzymes for all grain to help with starch conversion, but it doesn’t seem like it’s too big of a leap from brewing with normal grains.

1

u/PontusFermntr Jun 03 '26

I looked into it, and from what I can see the main thing missing is more gluten free malts/adjuncts. The app already supports enzymes for conversion and yeasts that are gluten free specific. So I will add some more common gluten-free products, and also add a small label to recipes so it’s easy to see that the whole recipe is gluten free. I can ping you here once released 😊

u/brakattak25 Jun 03 '26

Wow awesome! Thank you so much!

2

u/brakattak25 Jun 02 '26

Also here is a basic extract recipe to give you an idea.

Looks like a great app. The App Store listing says this plays well with Brewzilla but I cannot work out how exactly - is it meant to connect with the system in some way? (I don’t own a Brewzilla yet but plan to buy one.)

2

u/PontusFermntr Jun 03 '26

Yes, it does connect to Brewzilla! When you have started the app you should see a ”connect to RAPT” button. If you don’t see it, you can press the ”gear/settings” icon in the top right on the dashboard view to open the same flow. If you follow that guide you will have connected FERMNTR to RAPT, and once you buy a Brewzilla it will appear in the view when you start a brew 😊 but may be good to know, Brewzilla only supports RAPT for gen 4 and up, so older Brewzilla generations, like gen 3, don’t support WiFi, which means it is not available in RAPT.

Once connected you will be able to see the Brewzilla data (like temperatures) in the brew session view, and in the live activity (on your iPhones/iPads lock-screen).

2

u/loveandpolisci Jun 04 '26

OK thanks so much!

1

u/PontusFermntr Jun 04 '26

Hey! I just wanted to let you know that I have added a lot of more gluten free ingredients now, which you can start using right away without even updating the app. Next week I will release a new version that will show a ”gluten free” tag in the sensory section if the recipe contains no gluten. Happy brewing!

u/loveandpolisci Jun 05 '26

Hey again - how do I convert units other than temperature to metric?

1

u/PontusFermntr Jun 05 '26

What units exactly are you looking to convert?

For weight and volume it uses the device default settings, but you can still set whatever unit you want when adding/changing amounts (like adding an ingredient to a recipe). Just scroll on the unit symbol.

In the apps settings (dashboard -> gear icon in top right corner) you can change temperature, beer color and gravity unit to something manual.

If you feel like it should be easier to change weight and volume units I can add that in the next version of the app.

2

u/loveandpolisci Jun 05 '26

Yeah I would prefer to just change it all at once in app in the same way as the temperature if possible. I am mainly looking to change lbs and oz into g and gal into L. Thanks!

I also notice (at least with IPAs) that the smart recipes tend to use only one hop - it would be cool to use a sort of smart process based on flavor profiles to make the hop bill more interesting as I tinker with the recipe.

Thanks for the work on the app thus far!

1

u/PontusFermntr Jun 05 '26

So by just having another selector where you can choose to metric/imperial/etc would be good enough?

Where exactly do you see lbs/oz/gal etc? In the ingredients lists? Or when you add/change the amount? I am guessing you live in a country that uses lbs/gal/etc but want to use metric for homebrewing?

I am just trying to understand the actual issue before I add functionality for it 😊

1

u/loveandpolisci Jun 06 '26

Yeah just a simple selector. I see the options in manual adding of individual ingredients but would prefer just a single toggle. And indeed, I just prefer metric for brewing.

2

u/loveandpolisci Jun 05 '26

OH - and two premium features that would be awesome: Apple Watch integration and iCloud sync.

2

u/PontusFermntr Jun 05 '26

The iCloud integration is automatic, you don’t even have to think about it. It will automatically sync trough all your devices 👍

1

u/PontusFermntr Jun 05 '26

Both are already available, AND in the free version 👌

1

u/beefygravy Intermediate Jun 02 '26

Is it easy to import a recipe from brewfather to test this out?

2

u/PontusFermntr Jun 02 '26

That is an upcoming feature 😊 but feel free to test it out either way!

1

u/PontusFermntr Jun 09 '26

Hello! FERMNTR 2.1 is now live and supports BeerXML import, which means you can now export your recipes from BrewFather and import them into FERMNTR 👍
