Equipment Rogue Ales’ stuff is up for auction and the bidding is still low for some nice kit. I think it’s all located in Newport, OR.

Bidding always starts low, that's how auctions work. There's 10 days left lol those prices mean nothing.

Yesterday, the brewery I previously worked for just sold their mostly automated 50hl brewhouse that was purchased for $1m 9 years ago for $30k at auction.

Because people aren't drinking as much anymore breweries are going under and thus there is a lot of equipment available this it will sell for pennies on the dollar.

And the bidding probably went from like 2k to 30k in the last couple hours. Because that's how auctions work.
I'm not saying there aren't deals. I'm saying you're not getting a brewhouse for $10.

wow TIL Rogue went out of business. I hadn't bought any of their beer for maybe 15 years
Just looked it up
Reportedly, at 8:00 this morning, a message was sent to all Rogue Brewery employees via the company’s scheduling application. Effective immediately, Rogue ceased operations at all its facilities, including the brewery in Newport, OR, and its pubs in Astoria, Newport, Portland, and Salem. One of the impacted employees says there was no warning. Just an unexpected, polite but gut-punching message this morning, announcing the sweeping closures and wishing everyone well.
Sounds about right given their history of shitty management

Didn't know they were going under, guess I get it they used to he the most expensive beer at the store, but were pretty unique. Now they're still usually one of the pricer brands without being actually better than other craft beers; didn't get worse just way more competition. Also feel like dead guy was mostly ordered because it had a funny name.

The Siracha beer (and Vodoo Doughnut) turned them from a craft brewery into a novelty buy. But there was a time the entire craft beer section of a liquor store was one cooler with imports, Anchor Steam, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, and Newcastle Brown.
I’m in Chicago and Goose Island has always been a fixture, but when Fat Tire came into our market, that’s when the craft beer boom really started.

And now Goose Island is owned by the largest brewery of them all, InBev. And Fat Tire has a new recipe under their new owners, Kirin

Do they have the machine that puts the same beer in ten different bottles? I mean, Simpsons did it first, but rogue perfected selling one thing as many different.

I want the recipes more than anything else, particularly for Dead Guy Ale

Dead Guy's recipe is readily available online, Zymurgy and the Head Brewer (John Maier) who developed it, wrote an article with the recipe and the process. This recipe appears in the article, “Rogue Ale Brewery: Pirate of the Amber Waves,” in the September/October 2003 issue of Zymurgymagazine
Biggest challenge lately is getting their Pacman yeast-Wyeast seems to only run it very infrequently, but I've seen (no confirmation) that RVA Yeast Labs 103 is the same strain. https://www.homebrewfinds.com/finding-wyeast-1764-rogue-pacman-yeast/
John Maier also wrote a book, perhaps it would have additional recipes in it?

I love that yeast. I swear, it could ferment an engine block. I came across the Joystick yeast by Imperial, and that seems like it might be the same strain.

I just stumbled across two tall boys of it at a convenience store. I plan on drinking them this weekend as a final goodbye to an old favorite.

I’d be all about recipes for the Cold Brew IPA or the Double Chocolate Stout. I think I have a bomber of the stout still.

Watch out for these auctions unless you are very serious about making a bid, paying that bid on time, and picking up your purchases immediately. There was an auction in the bay area and I lost track of bidding. Turns out I won a box of coasters for $.50. I started getting collection calls from a number in London. They wanted their $.50. I ended up paying that bill but then discovered I missed the pick up date for the coasters and they had been discarded.
Serious customers only for these auctions.
Edit: To be clear the 50 cents was hardly a financial burden, however the quick move to aggressive collection and disposal of goods could catch someone with a more consequential investment by surprise.

Anyone else in Oregon interested in a group buy for kegs?
3
u/Chronobotanist Feb 25 '26
Potentially, I’m in Corvallis so not far. I don’t think I could reasonably use more than 2-3 kegs and most of these lots have a ton, so it could be a pretty complex operation distributing them.

u/Background-Bear-2286 Feb 25 '26
Yea, I could use a few but definitely not 50! I saw one lot of 14 which could be manageable for a 3-4 person split.

I’m good for one 22 lb. bag of Citra, what you do with the other 76.5 cases is up to you
