Discussion Review for knittingwoolshop.com ?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello everyone, hope this kind of post is allowed, very sorry if not. And sorry for potential mistakes, English is not my first language.

I've been looking at band weaving and tablet weaving for a while and finally started looking at looms. I found these incredible priced looms on the website knittingwoolshop.com and they almost seem too good to be true.

Internet search for potential scams have turned up mixed reviews so my question is: has anyone got any experience with this website? Is it legit or a scam?

Thanks :)

Help Converting pattern?

Hey all, I have a pattern for a baby blanket that I want to weaveand it calls for 8/2 yarn on a 12 dent sleyed 1-2 for 18 epi.

I only have 8/4 yarn, is there a way to convert this pattern in a way that I can still use the 8/4 yarn and get the same finish? Or am I stuck having to get more yarn?

Thanks!

Looms Free vintage floor loom available on Craigslist in Bishop, California.

This is not my loom and not my ad, so please don't ask me questions about it. I don't know this person. I've wanted a loom for years, but I'm waiting for the right one to come up, something smaller than this, perhaps tabletop or lap size, so I can decide if I want to make a full investment. In the mean time, if anyone else wants to benefit from this person's generosity, here's the link:

Mods, my apologies if this is not allowed, I'm just trying to be kind and helpful in a way that I wish others would be towards me too.

Help Looking for a Remote Industrial Weaving Internship

Hi! I'm a textile engineering student looking for a remote internship or project related to industrial weaving and fabric manufacturing.

I'm interested in weave structures, fabric construction, technical calculations, and production planning. I've used DB-Weave at university but have no professional experience yet.

I'd love to learn from experienced textile engineers and gain practical, production-level knowledge. Does anyone know of companies or opportunities that might be a good fit? I'm also open to unpaid internships.

Thanks!

Work in Progress A color theory assignment that I'm particularly pleased with!

Tried my hand at scaling up an overshot pattern to make it gigantic, while experimenting with color tetrads.

Woven with six different colors of Gist Array alternated with hand painted Gist Duet in the warp, and four different yarns in the weft (mostly Purl Soho Linen Quill). 16 epi/16(ish) ppi.

This isn't done yet, but I'm excited about it where it's headed!

Discussion Woven Corset

Thumbnail

Pipe dream here... I recently learned of a mid-19th C technique of corsets being woven on jacquard looms- boning channels and boning included. This is considered a lost art, but was once the economical option before industrial machine sewing.

I know this is way over my head as a beginner in both historic costuming and weaving/sewing, but what can I say, I like big dreams. In my vicinity I have access to jacquard looms as well as some of the software for drafting and such.

Is this in the realm of possibilities as a "someday" project as a hobbyist? Or am I full of hubris and early on the Dunning-Krueger curve? I estimate it'll be some time before I even have enough of a grasp to figure out what I'm doing with both pattern drafting and weaving to understand equipment and materials necessary, but if anybody has any insight as to what might be necessary I would love to bend your ear!

Hear me out, it's gonna sound weird. I'm making a hat.

See, told you it would sound weird.

Anyway, I don't know which community to reach out to, so here I am.

I'm about 13 and a half hours into this project and I've been very carefully weaving strands of green 2.6mm faux suede into the rough start that you see here.

The main question now that I'm here, is how do I connect these two halves of mesh to eachother and somehow stitch them together? I'm making this inside out and flipping it right-side when everything is connected. My concern is that it will unravel in the process.

Much obliged.

I've never done this before. I bought a 22 inch cork head to eventually get the accurate head size. Plus, it would help secure everything down while i also hand stitch that design you see in the back of the hat there.

Finished Project First loom weave!

I bought my first real floor loom back in April of this year and FINALLY figured out how to use it!! Its been a journey lol

I have used a small frame loom before and made one square before giving up on the process and dreaming of a floor loom, but otherwise this is my first project! I really, really love how it turned out!! Its about 70 inches long and 8 inches wide, made on a 12 tpi reed with warp made of upcycled cotton that I respan (do not recommend!!!) and weft made of 3 different colors of nube malabrigo. The purple on the ends is my first spin so this scarf is extremely special to me as a symbol of my journey in fiber arts. So incredibly excited for this project to be wearable!! It is hard to photograph between being very long and a mix of a million different colors, but it needs to be shared. Hoping to make another scarf someday soon :)

Looms Opinions wanted: Cheaper loom now or more expensive loom later?

I’m realizing that a frame loom can’t do what I need for some of my planned projects, so I’m looking into a rigid heddle loom. I want to make cloth similar to handkerchiefs or dish towels, and I want to move faster than I can with the frame loom. There are 10 of them, and I need to finish before the end of May next year to be ready for an event. I was thinking 24” at first, but I’ve decided that 16” is probably better for my space and portability needs. If I need more width, I’ll try double weaving or stitch pieces together.
Here are what I see as my options:

- 16” Ashford Sample-it + and extra 7.5dpi heddle $360 - 405 USD (depending on whether I get the kit
- 16” Willowdale rigid heddle loom, + 3 extra heddles - $280USD

I want the Ashford for the quality, but the higher the price the longer I’ll need to wait. At the same time, getting the loom faster doesn’t help much if I’m spending a lot of time compensating for problems caused by an inferior loom. I’m also curious whether people found the beginner’s kit worth spending a little more. Have you tried either? What do you think? Is the Ashford worth waiting for?

Edit: You’ve all convinced me that it’s a good idea to go a bit wider and try to find something used. I hadn’t realized how much the size could reduce with finishing. Thanks!

Arachne’s Web is opening its doors to you!

Every weaver has a story to tell, a question to ask, a discovery to share, or a little piece of knowledge that could help someone else.

And I'd love to hear yours!

I've created a new Submissions page for Arachne’s Web, where weavers of all experience levels can find out how to contribute to our growing international weaving community.

Perhaps you've had a wonderfully tangled mishap at the loom. Maybe you've discovered a clever solution to a tricky weaving problem, have a question you've been struggling with, or know a fascinating weaver whose story deserves to be told.

You might know of an upcoming weaving course, workshop or festival. Or perhaps you're interested in an editorial interview or would like to enquire about advertising and partnerships.

There's room for all sorts of threads in our web!

You don't need to be an expert or an experienced writer. You simply need a love of weaving and something you'd like to share.

Let's learn from one another, preserve our knowledge, celebrate this wonderful craft, and help weaving reach the next generation.

Come and add your thread to Arachne’s Web.

Discussion Suggestions for a “get to know my loom” project?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I’m returning to weaving after an almost 8 year hiatus (raising our babies and caring for my wonderful husband through the ebbs and flows of chronic illness). Previously, I studied extensively through the Olds College Master Weaver program and taught weaving both to beginners at community guilds and to students in the Master Weaver program. After all these years away from the loom, I have glimmerings of fibre creativity returning. My family has encouraged me to pick up the shuttle once more, and spend time doing what nourishes me. I wish to find out if the endless possibilities of weaving still intrigue me!

About two years ago, I aspirationally acquired a 68” 4-shaft counterbalance, (similar to but almost twice the width of the loom on which I used to weave in previous chapters of my life). I’m interested in getting it warped and exploring who I am as a weaver now. (And I want to save the loom from resigning itself to being an expert towel drying rack 🤣 ).

But I’m at a loss for what to weave! I don’t have time or energy yet to be a part of a guild, so I’m turning to this online community for suggestions. Does anyone have go-to projects to get to know a new loom? What project would you weave if you had a wide loom like this?

Parameters:

Widest reed I currently have: 55”

4 shaft

I have a large yarn stash from which to select (fine cottons, chunky wools, some silk, some linen)

Discussion Netting shuttles for the win

Post image
199 Upvotes

So I got to the interlaced doubleweave part of the four-shaft sampler in "Doubleweave: Revised and Expanded", set up my first pick, and stared in dismay at the shed. It was a half inch (1.25cm) at its highest point. That's not a shed, that's a suggestion. I'm spoiled by 2-3" sheds, but still.

I spent some time shoving my slim Glimakra boat shuttles through, and finally decided enough was enough. I'd been thinking about different kinds of stick shuttles already, since the next thing I want to try is split-shed weaving. I didn't want to splurge on a Handywoman Shedstick without knowing if it would work out. After some image searches, I found netting shuttles. The point on one end might be just what I need for navigating a split shed, and they'd be slim enough for narrow sheds.

I bought a set of six cheap plastic ones to try, for a few dollars. I trimmed off the sharp bits on the ends with nail clippers. I was surprised when the first one took more yarn than the quill for my boat shuttle, without getting bulky. Then I tried using it, and it was exactly right. I have to make sure the point doesn't exit the shed when I don't want it to, but it passes through very easily no matter how small a shed I'm getting (the height varies depending on how many threads I've picked up). It winds on easily and winds off even more easily than a regular stick shuttle. I'm sold.

If anyone else has tiny sheds and wants a change from the standard stick, or if you're doing warp-thread manipulation like split-shed, inlay, or tapestry, pick up some cheap netting shuttles to try. I'll probably buy some wood or bamboo ones later myself. They come in lots of sizes.

Treat them gently when winding on, by the way... The spindle on the pointed end gets stabilized by the yarn, but it's vulnerable at first, so don't put a lot of tension on.

Other Uses for heirloom weavings?

My mom made these beautiful weavings back in the 70s and I’m trying to come up with some ways to put them to use. I asked her about turning them into throw pillows and thought about framing a couple. Any other suggestions? The largest is 26x19 and the smaller ones are 21x16. I don’t want them just lingering sadly in a drawer for another 50 years.
