Social Sciences SOP advice
hi everyone! one of the programs i'm applying to for clinical psychology PhD programs requires a 400-500 word SOP. i was wondering if anyone has any advice for what to include! my issue rn is that i'm way over the word limit bc im trying to include so many things, so i was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the most important things. thank u!!

At that length most people keep the wrong half. What earns the space: why this program specifically, and evidence you can do research - a project, a thesis, a lab, something with an outcome.
What usually goes: childhood interest, a list of courses, and anything already on your CV. Those read as filler at 450 words.
One concrete trick - write the paragraph about your research experience first, then build outward. It tends to enforce the proportion you want.

400-500 is tight, most clinical psych apps are easily double that length so you gotta be ruthless with what stays
cut anything that just summarizes your CV, they'll see your research experience and GPA in the other materials. focus on the specific questions about your research interests and why that program, and make sure every sentence is doing actual work connecting your past work to what you want to do there. if you're listing stuff you've done without tying it to a future direction or specific faculty match, it can probably go
