General Advice Grad Admissions Director Here - Ask Me (almost) Anything

Hi Everyone - long time no see! For those who may not recognize my handle, I’m a graduate admissions director at an R1 university. I won’t reveal the school, as I know many of my applicants are here.

I’m here to help answer your questions about the grad admissions process. I know this is a stressful time, and I’m happy to provide to provide insight from an insider’s perspective if it’ll help you.

A few ground rules: Check my old posts—I may have already answered your question. Keep questions general rather than school-specific when possible. I won’t be able to “chance” you or assess your likelihood of admission. Every application is reviewed holistically, and I don’t have the ability (or desire) to predict outcomes.

Looking forward to helping where I can! Drop your questions below.

Edit: I’m not a professor, so no need to call me one. Also, please include a general description of the type of program you’re applying to when asking a question (ie MS in STEM, PhD in Humanities, etc).

the last email is just "..." with a quote of the initial. 7 minutes after the first email. 7 minutes!

This does not help your application, it will do the opposite.

General Advice Graduate Certificate Chances?

• Upvotes

I graduated from college around 8 years ago and had an abysmal GPA (I was unfortunately SA’ed and didn’t have a lot of support at the time; that coupled with taking classes that I did not have an aptitude for led to a pretty negative academic picture with my overall graduating GPA being a 2.03). Since then, I’ve amassed a lot of experience working in management consulting in my field and have done quite well for myself. I’ve taken a few courses online here and there but really want to delve much more deeply into the space I’m in, and I think a masters in the field would be the best way for me to achieve that.

However, I know the GPA is obviously a hindrance - how stringent are certificate admissions? I’d like to be able to use it as an opportunity to prove I am able to handle grad level coursework - the specific cert I’m looking at covers a couple of the courses in the associated masters program.

I have a solidly great reference for an LOR and also will provide an addendum with my circumstances but wanted to know what I can expect from others who might have insight in this space - thank you!

Engineering [General Question] How many direct PhD opportunities are open on an average per year in ECE labs of Purdue, NC state and CMU.

• Upvotes

If I am planning to apply for direct PhD in fall 2028 for research under professors in the ece department of these three colleges, I would like to know how is my chances to getting these.

As an undergrad from my India what are they expecting from the student? If my GPA at time of application is 3.3/
4 then what do you think should back my profile for having great chance for these programs?

And if someone who is pursuing these programs currently can you tell like what GPA ranges are usually accepted and doing work presently in these programs there

Social Sciences Master’s at a PhD-granting department vs. a master’s-only department?

If your ultimate goal is to get into a top Economics PhD program, would it be more strategic to pursue a master’s at a department that also offers a PhD, rather than one that only offers a master’s?
Does being in a PhD-granting department give you an advantage in terms of research opportunities, faculty connections, recommendation letters, or future PhD admissions?
I’m also curious whether master’s programs at PhD-granting departments tend to be more competitive to get into.
Would love to hear your thoughts, especially from those who have taken either path or are familiar with Economics PhD admissions.

Applied Sciences All my experience is in basic science and I'm having trouble establishing fit with professors conducting clinical/translation research

As the title says. I'm cold emailing professors who do clinical/translational research for research Masters programs. However, I'm finding it especially hard to prove that my research interests fit with the professor's research since all of it is in basic research.

Generally speaking, my prior experience is in cancer and the professors I'm interested in also do research in cancer. I'm interested in research on novel therapeutics/diagnostic tools but none of my previous experience can coroborate this. How can I connect my experience to date with the research I hope to do?

This is my current solution:

Although my experience to date is entirely in basic science, I hope to conduct more application-based research on diagnostic tools for cancer, and I believe my skills are largely transferable.

Computational Sciences Application advice

Hello, I am a senior undergraduate student studying Data Science and I want to apply to graduate programs, although I have a somewhat weak gpa (3.2) I have a decent amount of academic ML projects plus I am currently working under a faculty advisor with a research project and I think I can get a good rec letter from them. However I don’t think the level of the project is near being publishable as I am sort of new to deep learning research. I wonder if these kinda of projects can help supplement a weaker gpa for more research oriented deep learning/AI programs? If anyone has any insights be honest please! I need a reality check to better understand how to frame this for my applications.

Applied Sciences 3.43 cGPA, advice for applying to a Masters in Data Science?

Hi, I am looking for any advice on strengthening my grad school application and how realistic it is to be admitted to schools like Columbia, UChicago, Boston U, UBC, UofT, and Waterloo for a master's in data science with a cGPA of 3.43. I understand almost all grad school programs say that they evaluate their applicants holistically, but I'm still quite worried about having a GPA that's not competitive.

For context, I have a software developer internship and two research positions in the statistics/datascience field. Some of the courses I have are machine learning (Supervised & unsupervised), linear algebra, Calc 3, experimental design, data visualization. My goal right now is to become a data scientist eventually.

It would be really helpful to hear your experience or any advice on writing your personal statement, letter of intent, and any general advice for grad school applications, like how many schools you should typically apply to etc. Thank you!

Engineering Hi everyone, I’m a Master’s student in Chemical Engineering looking for a thesis topic.

I’m interested in process engineering, green hydrogen, CO₂ capture, separation processes, catalysis, environmental processes, and process simulation (Aspen Plus/HYSYS).

I’m particularly looking for a topic that can be studied mainly through simulation, modelling, literature/data analysis, or with limited laboratory resources.

I would appreciate suggestions for current or promising research topics in these areas, especially topics that could be developed into a realistic Master’s thesis.

I’d also appreciate advice on how to evaluate whether a topic is sufficiently original, feasible, and well-supported by recent literature.

Thank you!

Has anyone applied to it or gotten into it? My main concern for this program is that it is 3 years long unlike other programs I am applying to but it has really good funding for international students. If anyone has info on this program and its career prospects kindly help.

Engineering REALITY CHECKK!!

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I need a reality check and a few honest opinions on my profile for applying to MS Aerospace programs at UIUC, CU Boulder, UT Austin

For context:

I have an IELTS band 8, appearing for GRE ( To cover up my low undergrad GPA) in mid november.

The program application deadlines are december 1

1) will 0 publications or journals under my name effect my chances even though i am a research intern at a prestigious organization

2) Do I solely focus on GRE or also work on a personal project on the side to strengthen my profile

3) Is there any thing else I can do to increase my chances of getting into my target unis

I also need a few opinions on the following:

Lastly, should i contact any consultancies for the application process or do it on my own as only 2 months are left.

also what other unis i can target based on my profile

PS: Btech and MTech are equivalent to Bsc and Msc and my grades on a 4 scale grading are 2.75 and 3.42 respectively

Any opinions and suggestions would be really appreciated:))

Social Sciences Chances of getting into Canadian Psychology-related master's programs?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently in my fifth year of a BA (Honours) in Psychology at a Canadian university, and I'm applying to master's programs for Fall 2027. I've been feeling pretty anxious about how competitive my applications will be, especially because of my cumulative GPA, and would really appreciate some honest feedback!

Programs I'm applying to:

  • MSc in Psychotherapy – McMaster University
  • MSW (Mental Health and Health Stream) – University of Toronto
  • MA in Psychology – Concordia University
  • MA in Psychology – York University
  • MSc in Psychology – Trent University

For Concordia, York, and Trent, I'm particularly interested in pursuing research related to clinical or health psychology.

Academic Info:

  • Cumulative GPA: 3.45/4.30
  • Last two years GPA: 3.80/4.30
  • Dean's Honour List for the past two consecutive years
  • Chose to complete a fifth undergraduate year to gain additional research experience

Research experience:

  • Currently an RA in two psychology research labs (one is clinical).
  • Contributed to a scoping review on academic accommodations for students with disabilities, including screening, data extraction, and manuscript preparation.
  • Currently involved in a systematic review on accessibility and inclusion in higher education.
  • Worked on a separate research project involving confidential exam accommodation data.
  • Facilitate in-person participant sessions for a study on sexuality and sexual well-being.
  • Completed one directed research course for credit and I am currently completing another.

Other experience:

  • Volunteered with adults with disabilities in an inclusive arts program and neurodivergent children in a social skills program.
  • Completed Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
  • Several years of employment experience, including a current leadership position.
  • Two academic references from professors I've worked with in research settings, including a clinical psychologist and my department's undergraduate chair.

My main concern is my cumulative GPA. Although my recent grades have improved significantly, I know graduate admissions can be extremely competitive.

Based on my background, do you think I have a realistic chance of admission to any of these programs? Are there any programs you think might be unrealistic for me, or others I should consider applying to?

I'd love to hear from anyone familiar with Canadian graduate admissions, especially those who have applied to these programs! :)

Thank you so much!
