Got this fella to put in a tropical terrarium, was told by another user to try posting here, said they think it looks a bit like a rabbits foot fern. I was informed to check for "a fuzzy rhizome" but am unsure what that'd look like. Any ID and advice for care would be massively appreciated as I'm very much a newbie with ferns!

Hey guys, my fern has crispy edges and dotty leaves, I’ve been away for a week but the humidity has stayed around 70% and the water will have stayed moist but not wet. Can anyone identify the issue?

My Dad gave me this Staghorn a few years back. He’s been propagating them for decades. It’s doubled in size since I received it and is thriving. Besides keeping it watered and out of the direct sun, I just place a banana peel on top of it every six months or so.

I love it and how low maintenance it is.

Those are volunteers who grew along with the third, also unidentified fern. Any idea which one is what?

(And how likely am I to keep them alive indoors, since the mystery fern is clearly unhappy...)

Planting/Growing How do I sort my punga spores

I gathered WAY too many punga spores and this is my first time. I have so much and I don't know how to sort it. That paper thing isn't quite working for me but I can try again. Could I just propagate with husks included?

Question Birds nest fern uneven growth and brown crusting

Thumbnail

Hi! Got this fern as a gift a couple months ago and adore him. I’ve been noticing some uneven growth (one side looks a lot more bushy than the other) and have noticed many hidden leaves that get no light (is this an issue at all with my potting? Did I pot it too deep?
There are also some crispy leaves.
The fern’s crest is still clearly making new baby fronds so not deathly worried about him, just curious.

Further info:
The uneven growth doesn’t seem to be correlating with which side is facing the window— I rotate the pot every week when I water (started doing this when I first got him when the uneven growth started— has just gotten more prominent since then)
I water every 5 days and keep him on a LECA tray. This window directly faces another building so it only gets indirect light and not harsh sunlight.

Planting/Growing Help

Can someone tell me why my fern is yellowing? I have been watering when the soil is on the dry side of being damp? If that even makes sense. I live in a dry climate, so I got a humidifier. I have it by a north facing window with consistent light, and an additional grow light. I’m wondering if I’m going a little overboard with the additional grow light? I have had the plant about a month, started yellowing about a little over a week ago. Should I repot it into an actual pot? lol I haven’t wanted to repot it because it’s having a little bit of a rough time. Thank you!

My fern is producing hundreds of little fern bulibils. I'm tempted to propagate them and plant these ferns all over once they're large enough

Question My Boston fern is really trying to spread... Should I let it?

Thumbnail

I've been growing ferns from spore recently and they're doing really well, but this is the first time I've bought a fern an it's actually done well outside a sealed bag. I'm in Colorado so the humidity's super low. This fern was labeled as Boston fern variety and looked super scraggly when I got it, but it's really taken off and has been putting out these long tendrils. Should I put the tendrils on some soil? Or maybe it's telling me it's time for a repot? Any advice would be great! (Last 2 pics are an unidentified wood fern I started from spore early this year and baby birds nest ferns I got last year as a clump of gametophytes off fb)

Video Finally figured out why my staghorn fern kept browning at the edges

Had a mounted staghorn fern for close to three years now and dealt with crispy brown edges on the shield fronds pretty much the entire time. Kept assuming it was underwatering since staghorns get that reputation, so I kept soaking the mount more and more, which honestly made things worse because the sphagnum backing stayed soggy for days and started smelling a bit off.

Turns out my problem was airflow, not water. I had it hanging in a corner of the bathroom where I thought the humidity would help, but there was basically zero air movement back there. Moved it to a spot near a window where a small fan runs for a few hours a day, cut back watering to once every 10-12 days, and the new fronds coming in this fall are already noticeably greener with none of that crisping along the margins.

The other thing that helped was switching from soaking the whole mount to just misting the shield fronds and letting the water run down naturally. Less dramatic soaking, more consistent light moisture. The fertile fronds are finally starting to look less stressed and I'm seeing a new pup forming at the base which I haven't had happen before.

Anyone else find that staghorns get blamed for water problems when it's really a circulation issue? Curious what setups people are running for these, especially anyone mounting on cork versus wood since I'm debating remounting this one before winter.
