Feedback Requested Can you make grocery store cake decorating “not cheap” looking?

Post image
2.6k Upvotes

Amateur grocery store cake decorator here 👋🏽 I received a last minute cake order due to another store canceling their two bouquet cupcake orders for a bridal shower. I informed her my limitations but I was willing to do it if she was okay with what I had. She explained her daughter wanted it to be very “classy and non cheap looking”. This was my attempt.

In future what could I have done to make this less cheap looking? My coworkers are always super nice and supportive of my cakes but I’m hoping to improve for next time. I was unable to be there when the customer picked up and sounds like they sent dad to pick up anyways. Not sure if it fulfilled their request atm.
Open to feedback ! Thanks 🙏🏽

Edit:
Thank yall so much for the feedback. So nice !
The customer did request all white, whipped icing
This is the best board and box I had. Our other boards are black cardboard and smaller. Working with what I had and went for less is more lol 😆

Update: Customer called today and wanted to thank me for the order. The daughter loved the cupcakes and it seemed to exceeded their expectations! She says she will be ordering from me again !
Thanks again for everyone’s feedback and compliments 🤍

Feedback Requested Looking for tips on how to improve

I currently work at a grocery store and sold cakes on my own for years before that. I took a 3 year break from cakes and only started this job 4 months ago. I feel like I’ve lost my touch and I don’t know how to stay up to date with trends. What should I be paying attention to more or practice? Ordered cakes newest to oldest.

Made this yesterday and it’s supposed to be a wisteria themed cake for my grandmother but it’s lowkey looking like grapes to me… be honest (but nice please!!)

I was laid off from my big tech job over the summer and decided to take a break. In the meantime I’ve decided to learn how to decorate cakes and cupcakes.

I’m still very new to this (especially with cakes) so very open to feedback! I don’t intend to do anything with this new skill, I just want to be able to make things for family and friends.

Feedback Requested If you ordered this cake. Would you eat all the extra frosting or scrape most of the top off?

Made this cake that finally got me in a fall mood. I love frosting but even I would scrape most of it off.

I’ve included pics of the issues I had with the base layer of green fondent. Why is it cracking when I lay it on the cake? I don’t think it’s dry, i literally just rolled it out. It was solid until it got on the cake then stretched and tore.

And how do I stop it bunching up at the bottom so I’m left with these ugly wrinkles?

Butter cream crumb coat: is there any way I can improve this?

For anyone interested, the cake is an orange and poppy seed cake. The whole thing took me around 8 hours and was completed in one day.

If you have any critiques or things that could’ve looked better lmk!

I am working only in ABC and cream cheese frosting, not able to do fondant yet. Any words that shine gold in my pics is white chocolate covered in luster dust.

I’ve been struggling to pipe words because I’m starting to develop carpal tunnel and my grip has gotten weaker and shakier :/// so my words are my least favorite part of any cake.

From most recent to about a month ago.

Thanks for looking :)

Was asked to make a Squidward grad cake. I haven’t worked with fondant in years and I’m awful at piping. It’s not perfect and I definitely shouldn’t have added the edible image before today-it bubbled and cracked in the fridge 😢 Gave my customer a big discount because I’m not happy with it. It’s cute (from a distance but flawed up close).

Tell me the truth-would you be disappointed with this cake?

I am a self-taught baker who is newish the cake decorating world. I have recently been trying to learn lambeth style decorating and am struggling with how to fill negative space with an appropriate level of detail and texture.

Looking at this cake, I just feel it isn't finished. Needs something more, but what? Any feedback or tips would be very much appreciated. I am still very new to this and am still working on refining my basic cake decorating techniques.

Feedback Requested Do these crystals make the cake look tacky?

So with the recent uprise of “Gem Cakes” I wanted to try to make one! I made it for a lady I met online and it was free, so I dont think its to shabby for $0 and her daughter loved it…buttt im not a big fan of the way the crystals look. I feel like it looks tacky or something, idk😂. My friend said the same thing.

Usually people use fake crystals, but who wants to pick all that off??? And the edible ones I have seen on etsy would take to long to arrive so I decided to make them myself!
I made the Crystals using sugar, water, some flavorings, and food coloring. I thought using some silver edible glitter would help make them look a bit more realistic but it still looks like weird to me. What are yalls thought??

Feedback Requested Vanilla Raspberry Cake . First time trying Heart shape & palette knife petals . Was so challenging.

This was a very challenging cake for me as I have never tried a heart shaped cake before, or palette knife flowers . I haven’t even mastered getting smooth buttercream on a round cake yet , don’t know why I thought it’d be a good idea to try a heart cake 😂. Stencilling as well as palette knife flowers , I gave it my best shot . I tried a little stucco , but I don’t think I did enough or did it properly to make it look intentional. Looks like I just messed those bits up. I was trying to go for a rough ( deckled ) top edge , but it just looks messy.

This is a vanilla raspberry cake , raspberry filling and Swiss meringue buttercream.

Any feed back is appreciated on all aspects . Do you think it needs anything extra , such as some gold leaf or more decorative pieces? As it’s just a practice cake it’s not for any particular occasion.

Thank you in advance.

Feedback Requested Help Me Price my Cakes

Thumbnail

1.8k Upvotes

Hi Everyone, A lot of people have been telling me to sell my cakes, but I am having a hard time figuring out the pricing of the cakes. For context, my cakes cost approximately $25 to make in total, including packaging, and I spend, on average, 5 hours per cake. I am also in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia, which may provide additional context. Would love to get some honest feedback as to what these cakes are worth based on my time, my work, location, and costs. All these cakes cost about the same to make, except the red, white, and blue heart cake, which costs twice as much as the other cakes. Any feedback is appreciated. If you want to price each cake individually, you can do that too.

TLDR: Cake costs about $25 to make and takes about 5 hours to make, and I am in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. Help price the cake

cute? or looks too realistic and gross? not at all a professional.

UPDATE: a great question to ask your customer: “are you a CAKE person or an ICING person?“ (I myself am a cake person and won’t eat the extra icing.) The only critique I got was from an older man who wished the cake layers were thinner and had more layers of icing! I did not even consider that but could have easily done it! (I made too much icing!!)

Others said it was great, no changes. So today I learned, to please the “main customer”- ask their preference!

Feedback Requested How do I make these better?

Thumbnail

As a guy I’ve always struggled to make “pretty cakes” I always like the more artistic, bloody, messy, and thematic ones. But I’ve been trying to get better with flowers and more soft feminine approach. I’d appreciate feedback on how to keep getting better. The only thing that gets me through it is my favorite part… the lettering 🤧 but also posting just to see who likes what and maybe that’ll help me as far as designing in the future. To me they feel basic, dull and boring…

Feedback Requested Is $100 reasonable?

So I’ve recently got my first ever cake order from someone other than close friends and family. They asked for a 4 layered 8in strawberry cake with strawberry filling. She sent me inspo pics for a strawberry shortcake theme (pictured below) I just don’t know how much to charge her since I usually sell my cakes pretty low to my friends and family. I was thinking $100 since supplies/ ingredients alone will cost me about $65, is $100 to high? I also added cakes I’ve recently done just so yall can see my work and base it off my skill as well.
