Feedback Requested Could I sell these?

I think so, they are beautiful!!! A little unasked for advice- to get the frosting perfectly smooth, try having a cup of very hot water near you when decorating, and dipping your frosting spatula into it when youāre smoothing that layer of white frosting on! It makes a world of difference!

Would it still work on Swiss meringue?

u/prettylittlepastry Jan 18 '26
Yes! Did it today, I do cake decorating professionally and this is how I handle stubborn SMBC in cold weather.

Yes. If you want to expand, add yellow gold detailing and make them Beauty and the Beast/ Belle themed to also capture kidsā princess birthday party market.

I guess I'm just doubting myself lately. People say I could start a business but the customers don't seem to be anywhere to be found!

maybe you can try to bake them for friends and familyās parties where they pay you for the ingredients and you do free labor just for people to try your cakes and getting the word out about your home bakery until you start getting customers?

Finding your customers is the hardest part. But these cakes look good and your customers are out there! It could also be that people want to buy your cakes, but just haven't had a reason too yet. If you're serious about selling, start advertising and don't give up! Good luck to you :)

The last three photos are stunning. In the first photo, the piping of the vines on the sides looks a little bit less refined. I probably wouldnāt use that photo in your advertising. Maybe you could experiment with a thinner piping tip? Apart from that, the cakes are gorgeous.

Your cake is very pretty. Is there a picture of the cake when cut? I donāt base my decision to purchase a cake on the exterior, I want to know what the texture, crumb and filling is like. Cake is a consumable product and the customer needs to be satisfied with the eating experience or they wonāt come back - no matter how pretty the exterior is. There are tons of beautifully decorated cakes on social media and visual appeal is important but itās the actual cake flavour and texture ensures repeat customers and loyal clientele.
The other thing when selling cakes is to never overpromise and underdeliver. If your current niche is this one particular design (roses) then stick to it for now until youāve mastered some other techniques. I see a lot of people approaching small scale bakers to make fancier cakes on order and itās very tempting to say yes, only commit if youāre 100% sure you can meet all the expectations in time and on budget. Also donāt forget the logistics - delivery or pick up, packaging, storage etc.
Do a rough estimate on basic costing (ingredients, time, electricityā¦) and figure out how many cakes youād need to sell within a specified time frame to break even or make a profit. If youāre doing it on a cake by cake basis itās hard to be competitive with your pricing. You also need to ensure consistency, have some element of quality control and meet certain hygiene standards. You can be a phenomenal baker but running a business, selling, marketing etc is where a lot of home bakers and small scale businesses falter. Maybe do a trial run over Valentines and see how you do.Ā
Tip: I do use a heated long bladed metal offset spatula to smooth the final layer of frosting. The Viva paper towel method also works great on certain types of frosting. However if youāre struggling to get the frosting super smooth lean into a textured design. Decorative cake rulers / combs are cheap or you could just use a fork, butter knife, palette knife etc.Ā

I did cakes for over 30 years. This looks very much like how I began. Yes, you can sell these, and the more you do, the more you'll perfect your style!

I would make the vining/stem part a little darker on all of them. The leaves on the second one could use a little improvement. The sides and top could be a little smoother underneath in the first two. This isn't to say you can't sell, but if you're looking for something to focus on and improve to feel more confident, I would start there.

I totally agree with these suggestions! These were practice so I wasn't totally big on trying to get the colors too deep or vibrant. Going to do some more experiments with coloring soon too!

On top of the other advice you've received, you need to check the food regulations in your area for selling home baking. The cakes are lovely, best of luck š¹ š š
