Iâm by no means a political expert - but why would David Eby call a snap election with a 34% approval rating even if he thought the conservatives were in shambles?
49
u/Frater_Ankara 3d ago
IMO with all the BCCP departures he thought the right vote was heavily split across 3 parties and never predicted them rebanding back again. Personally, I also didnât predict many peoplesâ goldfish memory about how abysmal the BCCons are as a party and that so many of them have just looked past or forgiven all their past issues. I am shocked at these numbers.

I just don't understand it at all. How are people missing the clear racism and anti intellectualism coming from the right in BC. It's genuinely shocking to me.

I mean I think the sad and most obvious answer is they don't forget; they support it. Two trump elections and the public reaction to covid should make it clear there's a lot of people feeling like they are in fact victims and support punching down as a supposed solution

If you don't think he's an idiot, it's because his majority was razor thing and he thought he was going to lose his majority soon anyways. I also gather that the thin majority has been making it hard to get legislation passed.

Because he thought he saw an opportunity to grab 2 more years of power. Everyone knew he was done in 2028.
There's a lot of posting in this thread about what a threat the Cons are and how they'll privatize and ruin everything. If David Eby cared about any of that he wouldn't have given the Cons the chance to take power early.
4
u/CanadianLabourParty Thompson-Okanagan 3d ago
The Conservatives were gaining traction. The NDP were losing their majority.
It was either call an election now while the BC Cons were disoriented or wait until the next election time and have the BC Cons have a the ability to absolutely route the BCNDP.
Best case scenario for NDP is things go back to square one with an NDP minority backed by the Greens, and no CHANCE of the BC Cons triggering an election.
Worst-case scenario, the BC Cons win a decent majority, that they would have had anyway.
A middle-ground scenario is the BC Cons win a slight majority, which means the unhinged, culture-war shite becomes a no-no, including their pet projects like privatising healthcare and ICBC.
Because the moment they try THAT stuff while holding a slim majority, and a BC Con MLA has to step down, they lose that majority and now they can only pass the more procedural stuff.
This was once again, the NDP putting the nation/people over party. We either endure the inconvenience of a snap election and make the right call, OR we go, "Bad Eby for making us vote." and reap the consequences of that.

Still flabbergasted at the catastrophic decision making from Eby here.
He was in a perfect position with the conservatives in free fall. Â He would have likely won the two byelections and cemented his majority, maybe even picked off a couple centre B.C. MLAs over time as efforts to unite the right floundered. Â
Instead he called an election that no one wanted and lit a fire under the conservatives where they set aside their differences temporarily to pretend to be normal and now theyâre likely to win. Â
Just a shocking amount of incompetence and betrayal of the province and total unforced error. Â So disappointing. Â
120
u/emuwannabe Thompson-Okanagan 3d ago
We also don't know what was happening behind the scenes. The number of MLAs who quit the NDP immediately after calling the election tells me he wouldn't have lasted the full 4 year term and we'd likely have been having an election in the spring.

u/ship_toaster 3d ago
In Eby's words, from a press conference yesterday:
For people who haven't been following closely what happens in the legislature; when you have a 1-vote majority, it is technically a majority, but every vote is a tie vote and the speaker has to break the tie. And what that means functionally is you can't control the schedule in the legislature, and on every vote the government might fall. On 13 different occasions, the Conservatives have tried to collapse the government, and a couple times they came really close. I had colleagues attending virtually from hospital beds after having a new baby, after cancer treatment, and because we couldn't control the legislative schedule we spent, I can't even tell you how much time we spent debating whether or not we should repeal the BC Human Rights Code and legalize discrimination in British Columbia. This is what Conservatives wanted to talk about.

Only 1 of those MLAs was at all a surprise. Chow is pushing 80. Lana has been an MLA for 17 years and it was common knowledge she wasnât running again. Brenda has cancer.
Iâm not saying caucus is super happy right now with Eby but it wasnât like any NDP MLAs were about to cross the floor.

Yeah I think 4 MLAs not running again and now Mable Elmore (a respected MLA in Vancouver) coming out against his decision about the Filipino cultural centre is showing us that unity within the NDP is fractured more than we think.
DRIPA and LNG were also causing rifts in caucus and that was well documented. As more information comes to light, I have to wonder if some in his own party were going to vote to bring down the government in the spring. Not only would he then have to face voters anyway, heâd have to face them with half of a caucus that doesnât believe in his leadership.

As much as I prefer the BCNDP over the... Alternative, I think they have their own problems with 'activist' MLAs, similar to the BC Cons issues with, well, crazies.
Obviously not nearly as bad, imo, for the NDP, but it's not too farfetched for me to believe that there is a significant enough chunk of NDP MLAs who value ideological 'purity' on things like DRIPA and LNG over the good of the province and would have brought the government down regardless.

Apollo Chung, the former director of operations for the Conservative Party of BC:
"Thatâs all I keep telling everybody: once you get government, who cares? I donât care about, like, saving the province and all that shit. Like, saving the province is only secondary to what the main prize is. The main prize right now is to get government. Once we get government, you can do what the fuck you want."

Not from BC, but from Ontario, I just really enjoy following elections. It looks like Eby tried to take a page out of Doug Fordâs playbook.
Ford called an early election, framing himself as the best person to stand up to Trump. At the same time, the opposition was divided on the left. The Ontario Liberals had a new leader who barely had time to introduce herself to voters, while the NDP remained around where they were in the previous election. The Ontario Liberals and Ontario NDP vote split almost perfectly, helping Ford secure another majority.
Eby seems to have tried a similar strategy, but with a divided opposition on the right. He may have been banking on the BC Conservatives struggling to consolidate support under a new leader who had limited time to build name recognition. It also looks like the Trump factor is not as big as it was when Doug Ford called his election too.

David Eby was never elected as Premier; Doug Ford was. I am not calling Eby an idiot out of personal dislike or opposition to his politics. On a basic human level, he simply is, much like Trump. Despite sitting on opposite sides of the political spectrum, the similarities are striking: close door decisions, corruption, financial mismanagement, extreme ideological positions, and the encouragement of extremism. The parallels are uncanny.

I mean they did actually accomplish a lot, and no one can do everything all at once. From another commenter:
Highlights of BC NDP governance, thus far:
Overhauled family-doctor pay, to make general practice more feasible for physicians.
Matched 1 million patients with primary care in, 600,000 were within the last 3 years, with 4,000+ more being matched every week
Opened a new medical school at SFU to train more doctors in BC, added double the number of seats for nurse practioners.
Changed zoning rules to allow more housing (blanket re-zoned BC) so duplexes, triplexes and small multi-unit buildings can be built in more places.
Imposed housing targets on municipalities, to force NIMBY city councils to approve more housing
Restricted many investor-style short-term rentals, to return rental supply back to communities
Indexed the minimum wage to inflation, with now highest minimum wage of most provinces
Expanded pharmacist prescribing - for 21 minor ailments and birth control (improves efficiency and ease of accessibility of healthcare for everyone.
Created the Land Owner Transperency Registry is now free to use (you can look up who owns what buildings).
Made prescription contraception free
Introduced public IVF funding
Opened a specialized menopause clinic; Expanded menopause-drug coverage
Created a renterâs tax credit of $400, with expanded renters protections
Expanded first-time-buyer tax exemptions
Funded school meal programs
Expanded subsidized child care
Introduced 5 paid sick days; banned employers from requiring doctors notes
Eliminated MSP premiums
Removed interest from BC student loans
Added employment protections for Uber, DoorDash etc workers.
Brought in pay transparency rules for job postings
Scrapped the lower liquor-server minimum wage
Heat pump rebates, making them accessible for lower-income households and helping to reduce heating bills.
Completion of the EV highway via the installation of charging infrastructure.
Asking rents are down 10% from their peak.

u/ketamarine 3d ago
Best run jurisdiction in all of North America is 100% BC under Horgan/greens and Eby.
You can argue about his charisma or leadership, or the strategy of calling this election.
But you CANNOT argue with their record.
Astonishingly good. And it saddens me deeply to see people of this province ignore what actually matters - that this govt was fighting to make our lives better.
I have never supported the NDP elsewhere in Canada as it's mostly full of impractical culture warriors. But the BC NDP is indeed different.
I'm working on the local campaign just to at least try to do my part to keep the fucking whack jobs out.

That being said, I think the BCNDP has its own big problem with 'impractical culture warrior' MLAs, and I think we'll see in the post-mortem of our NDP Government just how much those particular MLAs were willing to sacrifice the good of the province for ideological 'purity'.

I agree. I actually think most will look at this and say he's not far enough left on various things but in 2026 I don't think that's the winning strategy anymore.
People want focus someone who is confident, less partisan and focus on the economy so that we can actually fund health care, education, etc without continually increasing the tax burden on everyone.
If there was a centrist party who somewhat resembled Carney they would wiped the floor with both BC conservatives and NDP.
The answer to this is not go more left, nor is it to go far right - there used to be a middle ground in society and we need to get back to it.
24
u/RechargedFrenchman 3d ago
"so that we can actually fund health care, education, etc"
Except those are Left positions these days. The Overton Window has moved so far right that anyone just being decent and not entirely throwing everything at the feet of corporations is on the Left politically in the current climate. Even if they don't see themselves that way. Carney is doing everything economically the Conservatives wanted to do, minus all the social bullshit around trans people and racial minorities; that's not "Centrist" and I at least sure as shit don't want it in BC or Canada.
Most left politicians also have no interest in "increasing the tax burden on everyone" and saying they do is a conservative smear tactic to dissuade anyone voting left. Increasing the tax burden for fuckheads like Chip Wilson is something everyone should be able to get behind, increasing the tax burden for the plumbers and grocery store workers and stuff isn't even in the wildest proposals.

I donât know, I think a populist message like âwe need to make the province work for working peopleâ could be effective. BC needs a just transition for people suffering the decline of forestry; coal, oil and gas companies should pay their fair share to subsidize a home-building boom to lower rents and make sure our health care system is functional. But Iâd sure want to do some polling before rolling that out because bc is a diverse place.
4
u/ketamarine 3d ago
Eby is 100% the Canadian politician that most resembles Carney in terms of policy.
He has pushed massive investments in healthcare and schools, alongside real reform like the family doctor initiative.
AND has pushed forward infrastructure projects including natural gas, which I'm sure he took a beating for from those on the left of his party.
He also tackled housing affordability with more policies that really mattered than basically anyone else. He got laundered money out of housing, banned foreign buyers, put in vacant homes taxes. AND IT WORKED. And no one cares.
Shocking.
If he gets voted out we are all going to look at this as a golden age for BC...

Ebys done some good policy changes but he's absolutely not like Carney.
Carney works with everyone, he's actually far less partisan than anyone gives him credit for. Eby is a born and bred partisan.
He got laundered money out of housing,
He definitely talked about it while he was an AG. He hasn't implemented much of the recommendations that came out of it though.

That's a losing strategy. Most votes are in the centre.
I cannot support them because of their positions that are way left of centre. For example, DRIPA/Land Act/Heritage Act/ reconciliation in general is way left of where the average BCer is. I know it's been walked back, but decriminalization was far left policy too and we're still dealing with the results.
This kind of stuff makes me overlook the problems I have with the Conservatives. At least if they get in, they can undo some of this stuff and the NDP can get a reset with a new leader.

The worst thing about this, besides Eby's idiotic decision to try to grab 2 extra years. Is the NDPs marketing. They actually can point to things that have improved and instead they're doing the same thing almost every left of centre party has done and lost on for over a decade. Demonizing the opposing party not touting their achievements. Cons bad. Trump bad. That wears off after a while because people know this.
They need to pivot fast and start showing people what they've done. Not how awful specific MLAs are

Many of those people also fail to recognize that the problems we're having in BC are the same or similar to every other province in the country and most countries in the world. It's not because of Eby - it's the global situation now. Do they not see how Spain is protesting because of high rent and lack of accomodation? Sound familiar? So it the rental problem in Spain also Eby's fault? These are, unfortunately, global issues and they don't want the solution that will fix the problem.
24
u/BarelyCanadian_ 3d ago
Absolutely. Just like housing affordability is a global issue. The problem is people are so narrow minded and quick to believe whatever narrative is being pushed in their face on social media. We need to look outwards to places like Spain or France to see that if you want change you need to protest. Voting for the opposite party who'll reverse the changes that the current party made (that take years to see actual results) just keeps us in and endless cycle.
And I'm not saying NDP has been amazing at addressing the issues at all, but they're our only choice against a party that wants to dismantle it all for their big wig friends to make more money from us.

Exactly. Its the end stages of three decades of neoliberalism and the financialization of housing. That's hard for any provincial government to contend with and solve, especially if its a bigger systemic trend tgst has a lot to do with Federal level policies and direction.

Thatâs the story of how it always goes for (uneducated) people voting right.
A centrist / left government comes in, whatever problem someone has doesnât go away overnight (even if improvements get made), then at the election the right gets to talk about broken systems (so they can dismantle them), and the uneducated voter thinks maybe that will change things and they ironically vote against their own best interest.

Its been almost 10 years of NDP in power, I don't think its fair saying problems have not gone away overnight, NDP has seriously dropped the ball over the last few years and people want change. If it doesn't work out, hopefully the NDP or whomever can come back better
43
u/Yoooooooowhatsup 3d ago
While true for some things, it's demonstrably not true for the medical services this poster is talking about. That's been one of Eby's NDPs best achievements and it will only get better the longer they stay in power. At least speaking for myself: my friends, my parents, and I have all gotten family doctors in the past year and a half directly due to the NDPs policies. My parents live in one of these rural communities, as well.
7
u/RechargedFrenchman 3d ago
The Cons / the BC Libs before them have also been doing everything they can to slow down and otherwise hamper those improvements, because if things actually get better they can't point to how bad they are during the campaign period. Actual positive change is hard to run against, but they can use their seats to try and stop that change from happening in the first place, and they've gotten really good at it.
41
u/mintberrycrunch_ 3d ago
Iâm pretty apolitical and Iâll never sign up for any single party â but objectively, the ndp has accomplished a lot.
So many big things are often overlooked too. The family doctor situation is drastically improving because they completely overhauled how they are compensated. They managed to break through municipal gridlock and force up zoning of the entire province to allow multiplexesâthis is huge and has potential to entirely change the housing equation here long term (if the conservatives donât blow it up). They revamped ICBC and insurance rates have fallen dramatically for the same coverage.
I could go on but those are just things off the top of my head that are often forgotten, and they are huge
30
u/RadiantPumpkin 3d ago
There are half as many people without a family doctor as there was 5 years ago. The NDP built a new hospital in my northern town that opened 2 years ago. Things are happening.
→ More replies (3)9
u/Light_Butterfly 3d ago
The BC NDP has spent the past several years tackling the issues people complain about most: healthcare, housing, and affordability. They've overhauled family doctor compensation, connected over a million people to primary care, expanded childcare, removed interest on student loans, introduced paid sick days, made prescription contraception free, expanded renters' rights, and have pushed major housing reforms to get more homes built. There's more, I've posted a bigger list in this thread.
Its hard for me to understand, knowing the full record of what they have delivered, that people just hand waive all this away as 'nothing'. Of course there's room for improvements, and they know this, I just don't see the logic on throwing it all away for a far-right culture-war party.
13
u/nexus6ca 3d ago

10 years still isnât even that long in terms of the magnitude of the problems we face. It took like at least 40 years for housing prices to get this bad in the first place and no one in that time period has actually been able to make serious improvements in affordability on this front. In all likelihood it will take at least another 40 years for the problems to completely disappear.
What we really should be looking for is some kind of measurable improvement that recovers maybe like 5-10% of the problem in 10 years, and not just completely change change direction because 100% of the problem wasnât solved in 10 years.
The NDP has measurably stopped the bleeding on many fronts, but itâs just not enough (at least in many voters minds) to override the momentum we had going in the wrong direction before they took office and the many background global problems completely out of their control that makes governing difficult for everyone in this timeframe.

There's 4,000+ people being matched per week, with aggressive recruiting of healthcare workers from the US, Europe snd South Africa. They opened a new medicsl school too. It sucks for everyone in your situation, but please trust that its only a matter of time before you get matched. If the BC NDP stay in power, that is.
2
11
u/Light_Butterfly 3d ago
Keep in mind tgat they have matched 1 million people to GPs since taking office, are aggressively recruiting healthcare workers from the US and Europe, they created a new medical school, and reformed doctor pay to retain doctors and incentivize med students to take up family practice.
Are they done? No. There's 4,000+ people being matched per week. There's still shortages and yes, it does take time to reverse a crisis that built up over 2 decades, notably due to underfunding and cuts from the previous right wing governments (BC Liberals who rebranded as the BC Cons).
Part of the struggle is its harder to get doctors to want to live in rural areas, hence the unequal access (even with pay incentives).

u/sluttycupcakes North Coast 3d ago
The issues with healthcare were created 20-30 years ago predominantly by the BC Liberals. There is no quick and easy short term solution other than service reduction to stabilize core services. Its also just like... The government can't force someone to go be a doctor in some random small town. At most they can offer some financial incentives. But there's a limit to what's reasonable there.
What are these regions doing to make themselves actually appeal to young educated professionals to want to move and live/practice there? If I'm a new doctor, older range of gen z, progressive minded, maybe gay or just have family who is, used to transit and amenities and cultural diversity of people and food options, established social circles and everything, I'm not sure there's any number they'd be willing to to pay me to convince me to go be a doctor in say, Quesnel.
For the blue areas and values seemingly being all about personal responsibility, they sure as heck almost never seem to take any self reflection on why their small town populations are dwindling and so many young people leave to never return.

13
u/I_am_always_here 3d ago edited 3d ago
Just a friendly reminder that none of the polls are conducting a per riding survey. The pollsters are essentially guessing the number of seats by averaging the popular vote against the per-riding vote margins in the previous election. On the other hand, the NDP would have done per-seat polling before any election call.
There have been elections in B.C. where a party with a lower popular vote have won more seats, although obviously it does not look good for the NDP at the moment.
The polls also only track decided voters, and at last count the undecided were at an unusually high 27%. I haven't been able to find the number in the latest polling reports to see if it is still identically high. The polling estimates assume that most of the undecided voters will vote the same way as the decided voters, but if that is wrong by more than the margin of error then the results are skewed.

That is 100% correct. What they do is take the aggregate data and apply those to the actual data in the last election. What I can tell looking at the data is that theyâre projecting NDP ridings to softening because of the green vote and general unpopularity of the NDP right now and conservative are getting even stronger.

u/Hiply 3d ago edited 3d ago
This may go down in BC political history as the greatest own goal that's ever happened here.
The miscalculation by Eby and everyone who advised him dropping the writ was a good idea because the conservatives appeared to be in disarray just completely ignored the obvious "Sure, but come election day their supporters will all vote for them".
Eby could have had 2 more years to try and live up to many (hell, some) of the promises he made and put the NDP in as strong a position as possible for a 2028 election...but no, that would have made too much sense.
I'm voting NDP because any party putting "We're repealing SOGI because it's a child safety issue" front and center on their policies page is never going to get my vote.

Not at all surprised by this. The lower mainland is where the battle will be, especially south of the Fraser. I wonder what the numbers are looking like in Ebyâs Point Grey riding. The map shows it as NDP, but I wonder how close it is. It would be so ironic if he lost his own seat given that he dethroned Christie Clark in that riding so she had to run in byelection in Kelowna.
The Cons are running a guy in Van Quilcena who graduated from high school in 2018 and he is leading. But since that area in unlikely to go left, I suppose youthful inexperience is better than re-electing the incumbent (Dallas Brodie).

Conservatives and NDP do not want proportional representation. This gives smaller parties seats, leaving no chance of a majority. It seems every election I need to strategically vote. If things really do go this badly for the NDP, I'm at least hopeful the division within the BCCP will remain. In both parties, actually. It is good to have MLAs that are dissenting with varying party stances. Very good in fact. If constituents (NDP + BCCP alike) can keep pressure on their MLAs to represent their real, local interests intraparty, we can continue to have a functioning, reasonable government regardless of who wins. The kooky racist right-wing MLAs ought not to be able to enact whatever lunacy they have lined up thanks to most seats being more moderate, while lukewarm corporatist policies may yet be shot down by the loons (maybe I'm dreaming here).
A good party leader is not authoritarian, and toeing the party line having become the norm is a big part of why politics are so fractured and out of touch today. What a laugh to call the NDP 'dysfunctional' recently because some NDP MLAs actually have principles/scruples and stood up to Eby when he planned to make changes to DRIPA. Whether I agree with them or not, I will always salute a politician who stands against party lines when it doesn't match their values. This is exactly how politics should function.

As a non Canadian long term resident, it is entirely shocking to me that folk would swing from the BC NDP to the BC Cons (or whatever amalgamation of them is currently operating). I understand where folk find the blend more opaque when you shuffle in the Liberals on a federal level, but this juxtaposition is truly baffling to me.
To jump from one to the other is quite a leap indeed.

It is shocking, especially for those of us who don't take for granted the good things the BC NDP have done.
I take more of an issue with Federal level of government and the three decades of neoliberalism which had driven up cost of living for the average person. Its a big part of why people are voting to the right (especially younger gens, if they don't actually know the real reason they are being disenfranchised). Three decades of neoliberal economic ideology, saw expansion of wage suppression programs, let monopolies run unchecked, axed large federal level subsidized housing initiatives (back in the 90s), and led to financialized housing (bringing in both domestic and foreign speculators in real estate). Growing wealth inequality and the destruction of the middle class is a breeding ground for more extreme political ideologies. We've seen this play out in history.
It will be hard for any provincial government to make much difference with the baseline of neoliberalism and plutocracy unchanged. You don't see better successes with any of the core issues around cost of living, poverty and homelessness, in conservative-led provinces. If anything, Conservative leadership will be more brutal on low income persons.
By and large, many people do not even know what the BC NDP have done to try to make things better. And you can bet your ass wealthy interest groups are running aggressive propaganda and disinfo campaigns to convince the have nots, that right wing parties have the answer, and progressive governments are uniquely failing. They make false promises to fix things, while diverting attention away from bigger systemic issues, with culture-war distractions.
I hate that people have to flip to the opposite extreme, and learn the hard way.

This is insane.
You can look all around the world and find instances where voting for the right has made things worse for the average citizen. Just look at Alberta. They used to have public car insurance and some of the lowest fees. Now they've privatized it and have the highest fees. Not to mention they used to be the place to escape the taxes and high cost of living seen in BC and Ontario. Now they're just as expensive.
Here in BC we privatized our ferry services in the 90's. And we all love how they're operating now right? Chronic staffing shortages and cancellations. Where's the competition to make things cheaper for us that they always claim? News flash: not every service is meant to be profitable.
Ontario privatized their highway and are now being tolled for a highway they ALREADY paid for in full with taxes. How the fuck does that make any sense?
Right wing politicians serve one purpose: funneling more money to the rich.
Stop listening to American funded propaganda and open your eyes.
Voting the MAGA wannabes because you dislike Eby is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

It's wild, and what a terrible reason to let maple MAGA have control, "I hate Eby because he made me vote" is just so shallow.

Yeah, if you're not happy about having to vote... don't...?

I hate Eby for a lot of other reasons.
I also happen to hate the conservative party though.

Let's not reduce people's frustrations to that. That's how Trump "somehow" got in power. Because people's legit frustrations were ignored or deemed insignificant.

How will making things worse help at all? Iâm always amazed how people go with vibes and feelings âfor changeâ and not look at the potential consequences of electing a batshit insane far right party full of performative bs morons.
âLetâs vote for the party campaigning on making our lives worse, being incredibly weak and willing to cozy up to republicans, selling off our province to the highest bidder, and gutting our education and healthcare systems!â
Donât forget, white supremacists and neo-nazis vote conservative because they share a lot of the same ideals. Do people really want to align themselves with a party that nazis look at and say âya, thatâs the party that shares my beliefsâ.
The cons can âcondemnâ the rhetoric all they want, but thereâs a reason why neo-nazis and other far right hate groups support the BC conservatives and their current platform.2

Wow the bots to fuel BC separation from Canada are hard at it. I get a boat load of money that almost none of these people that were polled donât even know the candidate that they are voting for.

Jfc, people in BC are morons. We literally have people in Alberta and Ontario begging us not to vote Conservative because it's a shitshow and the party itself is filled with just the worst people ever and we're apparently just all "hold my beer" about it.
A Conservative government is going to be a fucking disaster here. Even all the campaign promises they're making can just be immediately tossed out the second they get their new leader, which we know is going to happen.Â
We are a bunch of fools.Â
