If you find a swift

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey Guys, a short info for this sub to make things a lot easier for me. If some reconize a Swift in this sub that needs help, please contact me or give the person that found the bird my name. I'm a professional caretaker for swifts with the extra ability to help people that have no help nearby. I'm able to contact people that are in no phone book or seek veterinary in other countries that are specialized in swifts. And an extra note, if you also wanna help the birds or the people...the clinic in Frankfurt only functions through donations. And they have a lot to do this year.

Tornado season! Is your emergency kit ready?

Just got my first tornado watch of the summer, so I checked my emergency it, and realized it’s a good time to share info with y’all! My emergency kit includes…

* hard plastic carrier, labeled with my contact info – I also have a soft-sided backpack carrier, but I want hard sided for emergencies so she’s less likely to get crushed if something falls on her. Hard carrier has one perch, and normally I’d add a toy and news print on the bottom, but I just washed it.

* hard plastic tub to carry the rest of the stuff, also labeled with contact info, including her vet’s info and a description of her

Inside the tub are the following (generally in small ziplock bags):

* a reminder to add nonperishable food (pellets) and water

* contact info for me and my vet

* records that prove ownership, including purchase receipt and a few vet records

* nail clippers / dremel

* styptic powder, gel, or stick

* corn starch or flour in a ziplock bag

* q-tips

* cotton pads for makeup (I should probably add or swap with some gauze)

* baby shampoo

* scissors

* vet wrap / coban

* pliers

* a pillowcase (for emergency stuffing her into)

* individually packaged alcohol wipes

* a couple spare harnesses that she isn’t trained on, but just in case

The tub lives under her cage always, so it’s handy if ever needed. Her soft-sided carrier also lives under the cage. The hard-sided carrier lives in a closet, so since there’s a tornado watch (lower level of threat) I took it out and cleaned it up in case that escalates. And the tub and carrier are both near the exit and her cage should we need to go for the basement.

Pictures are of the emergency kit ready to go, and of Kappa herself (female dusky conure, 19YO) from last week.

Here’s a few resources for making your own kit:

https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-pets/emergency-preparedness/preparedness-kit.html

https://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies/pet-disaster-preparedness.html

https://www.avma.org/sites/default/files/2023-11/aph-pet-evacuation-kit-checklist.pdf

Questions for y’all: do you have your own emergency kit? Are there different things in it, based on your bird’s needs or your local threats? Anything you think I missed or is overkill?

Sick pet bird The vet is saying she's going to be alright with a supplement but I'm so scared

I have 3 visitations in the past 2 weeks and I feel she is not getting any better. The vet has given me respocare (Respocare Avian is an herbal respiratory and immunity support supplement for birds. Primary Purpose: Acts as a bronchodilator, expectorant, and immune booster to help ease breathing discomfort, colds, or recovery from respiratory distress) but idk I'm so scared she's not getting better and I hear wet sneezes and tail bobbing, lethargic, the signs of distress and ultimatum.

If anyone has any recommendations pls I would love to get all the help i can get, i can't loose her🫠

I recently got two new budgies for my girl because her partner passed away, and I’ve noticed slight green poops, I’ve heard that it sometimes happens when the birds are moulting but it’s not a common thing for the birds I’ve had in the past… have concerns. They do have a vet appointment coming up next week that I’ll let the vets know then

Worried about my Budgie

Post image
20 Upvotes

This is my budgie Piña, I'm unsure whether they are female or male because the man who gave me them didn't say.

I'm worried about them. They're constantly sitting as shown in the photo, with a line under their belly. None of my other budgies do/have this.

They also have their wings propped slightly open as so, and I'm extremely worried. I wish I could take them to a vet, but I'm sixteen and my parents aren't listening to my worries.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Female cockatiel repeatedly straining after laying two eggs — could this be egg binding?

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I'm worried about my female cockatiel, Radish, and would appreciate advice from experienced bird owners or avian veterinary professionals.

Cockatiel, Female, Approximately 1 year and 3 months, other bird in the household- A male cockatiel (same age). She has a calcium block in her cage and nibbles on it daily.

Radish has laid multiple clutches this year, with previous rounds around April and June.

During her current laying episode she laid her first egg on 3 October, the she laid her second egg on 5 October. Both eggs broke, so there are currently no eggs in her bowl. Today is 11 October, and she has not laid another egg.

She repeatedly goes into her bowl, squats, pushes, and strains as if trying to lay another egg, but I have not seen an egg come out. I am also unsure whether she passes droppings while straining. There are droppings in the bowl, but I haven't confirmed whether they are hers.

  • She is eating and drinking.
  • She can perch, move around, and has flown today.
  • I have not seen open-mouth breathing, obvious weakness, or tissue protruding from her vent.
  • Her droppings have appeared watery.
  • She sometimes leaves the bowl and resumes normal activity.

I understand that egg binding is a possibility, but I don't want to assume that this is the diagnosis.

I have limited access to an avian veterinarian locally, so I'm trying to arrange an online consultation while looking for practical options for in-person care.

My questions:

  1. How urgent is this combination of repeated straining and no egg since 5 October?
  2. What safe supportive measures can I take while arranging veterinary advice?
  3. Should I avoid adding dummy eggs until a veterinarian has assessed her?
  4. What information should I collect about her droppings and behaviour for a veterinarian?

I understand that online advice cannot diagnose her or rule out egg binding. I'm looking for reliable guidance on what to do next. Thank you. 🙏

Rescued a Mayang simbahan

Post image
20 Upvotes

I got a Mayang bird(Maya and mayang bird is different), my younger brother saved it, I placed it on a dark spot on our room, so uhh what do I do to gain its trust? Since it can't fly for now, I thought of gaining it's trust while it's recovering before releasing it back to the wild because yes, I'm not planning to keep it since wild birds aren't supposed to kept as pets, right?

Why I wanna gain its trust you say?

So that the bird doesn't panic whenever I try to clean the wound or move it to move it to darker places

Ofc I can place a nearby bird food or water but I don't know how to help it without making it panic

Also no, there ain't no vets from where I'm from

(Sorry if my English grammar sucks, ask me if y'all don't understand it but I need an advice too)

Update: Freedom, in the end the bird has recovered and I let it choose between freedom or domesticity

Sick pet bird Controversial post. But necessary for people with no money who have pets suffering

26 Upvotes

the short: abandon your pet at the vet if you cant pay for treatment.

I am referring to cases of extreme trauma only, where anyone with eyes can see the animal is in constant debilitating agony just being alive and there is no home remedy.

The long:
The amount of posts i see every day with clear, severe trauma thats ongoing (people posting heavily eggbound (where its cracked inside and is cutting the bird from inside out and bleeding), people posting broken or splayed legs, scalped heads, extrem infections, or tumours or growth keratins covering in eyes/beaks/etc. One post was so bad i cried a week straight. It had tumours that prevented the bird from putting its wing down, and its feet were snapped sideways meaning it never had one moment of rest, and it was unable to breath properly. Why even have a bird at that point. Its horrific. A jail sentence on an animal suffering every moment.

People then go on to justify that they cannot afford vets, and they will just let the pet ride it out. This is inhumane and cruel beyond worlds.

I know vets charge for euthanasia. But you know what, you dont have to be honest. Just surrender your pet.

Walk in, say you found this bird and it looks like its hurting and leave. They cant sit you down and force you to prove you arent the owner. They cant force you to pay for “wildlife dropoff”. If they try, walk out. Say “its in your hands now i am not responsible for this animal and its up to you”. A simple “sorry i dont have money im not paying for this random pet. Im just handing this to you”.

They cant physically block your exit.
Just leave it in a box on the counter.

The vet will be forced to euthanise when it sees the injuries which takes the animal out of its misery.

Please stop forcing animals to suffer because of costs. Its called surrendering and its a free option.

Has anyone ever seen an injury like this? Hi everyone, I'm a vetmed student trying to learn more about birds. A local breeder sent me these photos, but we don't have labs here capable of testing and identifying what kind of tissue on the cloaca this is. Has anyone seen anything like this before? I'm thinking it might be a mite, fungus, a virus or some type of cancer. The color silver is due to a healing spray. This is a male rooster btw! Thank you!

Found pet bird Abandoned Goose: Help

Thumbnail

188 Upvotes

I was in a rural creek near a highway (read: bfe no where, southern USA) looking for rocks when I saw this goose SCREAMING swimming back and forth in a very small part of the creek, obviously distressed.
*There are NO other waterfowl in the area* I mean for hundreds of yards not even a duck.
I walked through the water to her and picked her up.
She (?) didn't bite, hiss, or do anything. She mostly just sat in my passenger's seat for the hour long drive home.
*I checked local farms in the immediate area, no one had geese, no geese have been reported missing to my knowledge
(edit to add one of the cashiers at the town's dollar general suggested she used to be someone's 4H project that didn't sell)

I have two options:
1. Keep her, and try my best to give her a decent life
2. Take her to a local duck pond area where people feed ducks and geese all the time and where people regularly leave domesticated waterfowl, including other geese. (I really don't love the idea of dumping a domestic animal in a semi-wild environment)

Someone else suggested she may have been hand raised from an incubator because she's puppy dog friendly. I assume she has no survival skills judging by how she was in the creek. She was hungry and thirsty when I got her home.

If I kept her, I'd make a stall for her in our barn with a baby pool, and let her out when I can supervise her, take her swimming, and probably get her a harness and take her with me places since she seems to enjoy car rides.
But that's not a natural goose life. We lease, so I can't give her what I want to which is her own massive enclosure with a true pond to swim in, MTV Birds Crib style. I feel like she'd be happy in a huge suburban pond where people feed them every day in the wild ish but I worry she wouldn't have the skills to survive.

I have no idea what to do. I also worry bringing her to the duck pond area, she'd be hurt or harassed by kids who chase the ducks/geese since she has NO fear of people.
