question What is going on with my tongue???

Post image
255 Upvotes

My tongue has been turning dark and has developed this black peeling ring that makes it hard to eat and so painful to brush. I tried using mouthwash to counteract the pain of brushing, but it seems to have made it worse. Also, the back of my throat is so sore, and I can’t afford to go to a dentist or any doctor right now. Please help!

Edit:

Went to the ER, and they said it looked more like an infection or something parasitic. They prescribed me something that would help. It's definitely not cancer, but I should follow up with the ER and an ENT. Thanks, everyone!

My boss insisted on RCT but I did a filling anyway. Patient had sensitivity to cold for one second only. Should I have done the RCT?

question Pain when eating 1 month after filling

• Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I had a small cavity that required a filling on my 1st molar located on the upper left side of my jaw. It's on the side that's adjacent to the 2nd molar (I think it's called an interproximal filling).

I went in August 26th when the filling was done. I had pain when eating and flossing that continued for weeks so I went back to my dentist and she redid the filling on September 16th (almost a month ago).

Since then, it's been way better, but I still have pain when eating harder or crunchier foods. It's not as sharp, but rather a dull-ish pain. I also have mild discomfort when floss goes in or out. I went to my dentist in the beginning of the month and she said it should settle down within 1-2 months and said the filling is fine. She did an xray and bitewing and both showed nothing.

To me, this is not normal, but I'm not a dentist so I'd appreciate some insight from people who understand this. Is this normal for such a filling and should I just wait it out? I don't want to keep going every week to my dentist about this.

Should I be worried?

question Abscess is not going away

• Upvotes

Hello, my seven year old girl developed this abscess at the end of September. We visited the dentist. At first she prescribed antibiotics and then from the next visit started draining the pus from it. The problem is this pus swelling comes back after one or two days. Now it has stayed the same for one week. The dentist hasn't done any xray of it yet. I wonder if the abscess treatment is this long. I have attached all the prescriptions as well.

Thanks

question Lil abscess?

Post image

Is this a baby abscess forming? It hurts right where that pale spot is only when I apply pressure, kinda deep bruise-y sore feeling, and I just noticed it today/maybe a bit yesterday. I had a cleaning and I believe X-rays in August and I don’t remember them finding anything super problematic. No history of root canals or cavities in this tooth and I don’t smoke or drink at all.

My dentist is several hours away so it’s tough to get in on short notice. Thanks in advance!!

question apicoectomy or root canal retreatment on 46?

Post image
• Upvotes

Dentist recommended apicoectomy but then went on a rent about endodontists so I'm afraid he might be a bit biased and recommends me the older tech due to his age. Very low pain during rest, sometimes high pain during chewing. Was put on a antibiotics for a week, helped a lot with the pain. But the tooth still feels "weird", like there's something pulsating.

question Face swelling with irritated nerve?

• Upvotes

about nine months ago I got a filling for a cavity in one of my front teeth, since then it’s been slightly sensitive to hot/cold and pressure, but it’s never been a big inconvenience so I just never went to get it checked out. A few days ago that same tooth began to severely ache and became much more sensitive, I went and saw a dentist, and they claimed that it wasn’t infected, but only that the nerve was being irritated as it was right up against the filling, and that I could either wait to see if it gets better, or I could get a root canal and be done with it. I scheduled the root canal for next week and figured that I could deal with it until then, but today the area above of my face above my aching tooth began to swell and I’m starting to get pretty scared. what should I do? I have nearly two weeks until my appointment, am I fine to wait or should I seek more immediate care?

question Is string falling out after molar extraction normal?

Post image
2 Upvotes

NAD. I had a molar extracted about a week ago. Today while I was eating apple sauce, this big pice of string fell out from the site. It seemed to be held together by some red dots. I did have a bone graft, which, what I am concerned fell out.I need to know if I need an emergency appointment, or if this is something that normally happens?

question Fiberglass rods visible

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello, two years ago, the teeth on both the left and right sides were rebuilt on the existing stumps. Root canals were performed, and glass fiber posts were inserted to hold everything together; the filling material is composite. Now, my question is: Why can I see the glass fiber posts? There are no holes—everything is smooth and sealed—but shouldn't the posts actually be underneath the composite to prevent infections? I’m not experiencing any pain or other issues; I just noticed it and thought I’d ask. Thanks in advance.

other Getting teeth pulled

so in the near future I plan on getting braces. I used to be scared of this dental procedure up until like a year or 2 ago. I finally worked up the courage, lol. the thing is now is that I know for a fact that I’m going to have to get a few teeth pulled to get rid of crowding. I AM TERRIFIED of getting a tooth pulled. its to the point where I can start to think about it or watch a video about and will literally tear up and shake. You would think I was otw to the dentist at that moment the way i start fidgeting. getting a tooth pulled is like one of my worst fears. I need to transform my smile and I don’t won’t my thoughts about this taking over. i am so terrified. y’all don’t even understan. what can I do to ease my nerves? can I be given anesthesia so I won’t be awake? there’s no way I can walk in with a sane mind and let them pull my teeth without feeling like I’m about to go crazy. 😔

question Cut the inside of my lower gums, is this considered a "gaping wound" that needs stitches??

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

TL DR I am apparently too dumb to eat hot fries any longer, didn't even realize I had cut myself until my tongue ran over it and it stung, opened my mouth to check and witnessed this nightmare. Is this considered a "gaping wound" that needs stitches? It's smaller than .5 inch, but with the edges being wider in the middle I'm concerned. I can go to my normal dentist in probably about 2-3 hours and change if need be, I don't want it getting infected or not healing. It stopped bleeding after putting light pressure on it just by moving my tongue in such a way that it closed. Can't believe I cut myself this badly on a snack.

question What is this bump that’s on both sides of my gum?

I recently saw this today but I did notice it a week or two ago. But during that time my wisdom tooth was tryna erupt while I didn’t know at that time as well I had post nasal drip. My wisdom tooth came out from extraction and a week after now I notice this again. I typically don’t know if I can hydrogen peroxide rinse after a week of wisdom tooth extraction to get it away. I also have an appt with a physician so I will talk to them as well and my post nasal drip. Should I also let the dentist know? I also am a cheek biter as well but these bumps a bit higher up.

question How do I know if my gum is bleeding (after flossing) from me not flossing in a while or the gum being cut

I have to confess that I am not an avid flosser, and had only just started flossing daily again (3 days in the roll now), but notice that my gum bleed in multiple locations when I floss. I look up what bleeding gum meant on the internet the answer that I got was that my gum just wasn’t used to being floss. Despite that it still bugs a bit, knowing that I am quite clumsy and have quite a heavy hand.

question was told i (27yo) have bone loss because of the lower impacted wisdom teeth. how bad is it? and could it recover on its own after wisdom tooth removal or would it require bone grafts?

sorry my dentist drew on the x ray a bit lol. i do not smoke and only drink very occasionally.

i’m just wondering if and how much this would complicate healing and my future oral health. am i in a situation where i shouldn’t expect full recovery?

question Worried about my future

25F here after dealing with severe mental health issues for years I couldn’t take care of my hygiene which resulted a horrible dental condition

Till now I have done this following work:

  1. 4 filling and 3 root canal

2.10 to 12 years ago got extraction of lower molar in a dental college and they didn’t bother to inform me about implant or bridge. Recently learned about consequences of leaving gap and considering getting implant if I still can.
I never had any pain or discomfort from the gap neither my upper molar dropped. Just the gap is a bit small

  1. On my next dentist appointment I probably need extraction of my last teeth due to extreme wear out

Now I want to how long will I have a normal life since my condition is too bad? Will my front teeth get misaligned due to the gap? I am worried about my looks and overall dental health. Will I get more dental problems in future even though I am taking care of it?
My anxiety is keeping me awake all night.

question Cbct scan help. What are these x’s and could these other areas be retained fragments?

Thumbnail

Hello I’m hoping someone can help with cbct related questions.

Can anyone explain what these x marks are in my jaw bone? A dr told me today it’s nothing and just how bone looks. I’m wondering could retained stitches from previous surgery show up like this?

Also if the white areas circled in the second photo could be retained tooth fragments from traumatic extraction? Where it was drilled up high? I had a sinus perforated for sure as water could come out. It’s closed now but no one ever treated the perforation or find the root that was drilled high into my cheek. Persistent one sided sinus/nasal infections now. With occasional nasal bleeding and nostril blocked from internal swelling. I have pain where this is at side of nose. Swelling goes up side of nose to eye.

I normally wouldn’t post online for medical help but I’m not getting anywhere I feel like unless it’s on a scan I can’t get help. Yet never any thing on a scan. I’m getting referred around in circles. No one is looking at me clinically. Only a scan.

Thanks

question My crown fell out with the core in it??

Please can anyone tell me what I can do to not get an implant??? I don’t trust the dentist who installed the crown. My tooth decayed under it in less than two years and he’s pushing me to his surgeon friend for an implant. What questions can I ask another dentist to make sure I exhaust ever effort to maintain my natural tooth???
