General Question Do you donate to Wikipedia?
I do, I donated one time a couple years ago, then I was looking something up tonight and I got the request. I donated like $3 and I decided to do the monthly donation, just $1.75 I think.

Yeah. $2 a month for like a decade now.
Probably should do more now than idiocy is on the rise

I donate about twice a year. I don’t utilize it all that much, but I realize what a vital resource it is.

I have donated sometimes, but not every time they ask. It depends a lot on whether I've used wikipedia recently or not.

Information governed by basement dwelling incels? No thanks, they’re not getting my money.

I would rather literally burn my cash in a fire pit than donate to Wikipedia.

Care to explain?

If you need to know the capital of Slovakua, it's fine. For anything beyond thst it's wildly partisan.

Partisan in favor of whom?

u/Born-Gur-1275 2h ago
It's edited by volunteers who may have biases, but I rarely see them.

u/TimshelExMachina 2h ago
Fair enough. But the commenter I responded to seemed to be implying these volunteer’s biases lean in a particular direction. I honestly have no idea what direction they were implying.

I’d suggest you read how Wikipedia works. It is intentionally neutral. Is it perfect? I’m sure it is not. But if you find something that isn’t neutral, backed by high quality sources, you can make an edit. Or don’t, because someone is likely to have already done that or will do that shortly. But you must have backing reliable sources. You can’t make shit up. It is impossible to have zero bias, but they are as close to zero as you can get. It is one of the most valuable resources on the internet. Please utilize it.

I used to waste a lot of time on wikipedia as an editor. It was many years ago. Unfortunately it became more and more anti Israel and anti America over the years and they blocked anyone who didn't parrot the hateful propaganda that they wanted.

Can you link Wikipedia pages that back this up?
0
u/Bumbalard 2h ago
That's not how it works.
Once attention is called to a pages information being suspect, it usually is corrected fairly quickly. Or it is edited back and forth in an "edit war".
The problem is, pages sometimes sit around for years with falsehoods or a whole lot of spin before they get fixed.
Wikipedia themselves have a page on it, and it is extensive.

I have on many occasions stumbled on obviously biased writing like what is exampled at their own link. Not everything makes the list as you can imagine.

I’m pretty sure they have rules about just sticking to the facts. Sounds like the facts don’t fit into your political ideology, so you tried to insert some bias into some articles. They reject that shit quick, with a clear explanation and discussion in the logs. The fact that you tried to turn it into Facebook or tick tok and didn’t succeed is exactly why I donate. They don’t need your money, burn away 😆

Nope. Even other Jews condemn Israel for what they’re doing. Nice try though.

Lmfaoooo I felt that one! Part of the reason I’m ok with donating is bc it’s only a couple dollars

When I get the reminder, I do. It's one corner of the internet that's reliable.

I do, but, I am now leery as I suspect AI entities scrape it. And that means we are feeding the beasts. Until there is regulation on AI scraping and evading paid point-of-source relationships, I am not inclined to do so in future.

I do $2 monthly, yes. I still get the damn banner and the emails and it's infuriating. If I'm one of the rare people who give, maybe stop making me feel shit for other people who don't.

No because I’m not a sucker.
Wikipedia has over $250M in cash reserves, and it costs only $3M a year to run the site (and could be run for much less). Users provide all of the content, and see none of those donations.

u/Born-Gur-1275 2h ago
You're a putz.

u/jaycfresh 2h ago
Wikipedia has enough cash to run the site for over 100 years. Doesn’t that make you wonder why they keep asking for money and where it’s actually going?

u/rs1971 3h ago
Nope. That shithole of a web page can't fail fast enough for me.
