USA Dog's last meal never delivered -- FUMING
My dog was diagnosed with lung cancer at the end of August and I have been providing palliative care for him since then. We went to a third vet yesterday and I had him on injectable opioids, thinking he would make it to our scheduled euthanasia date of this Saturday, the 19th. We had an awful night last night, and I called the vet to come today instead, ASAP.
I ordered him a big fat cheeseburger and cheese fries for his last meal--this dog lived to eat.
I live in a building with a 24/7 front desk that regularly receives deliveries so when the driver messaged me saying that they wouldn't let him up, I told him to leave it with the front desk. I was literally sobbing hysterically and in no condition to micromanage a driver.
When I finally got myself together and took my boy out for his last walk, I expected to pick up his burgers from the front desk. Surprise, nothing was there.
I am beyond furious through my grief about this. I worked in retail myself and I know service industry people are frequently abused. I tipped $10 on this $30 order because (obviously) it was SO important to me to get it on time.
My dog never got his cheeseburger. He passed away and I am having trouble articulating just how enraged I am. I don't know if there are words in any language that can describe just how upset I am.
Denis, I know you're not reading this but you made one of the worst days of my life even worse. Congratulations.
Edit: the front desk is manned by a dedicated staff that I know very well and they have worked here for years. This is also a huge residential building that has tons of food deliveries every day so it is very organized. No items are ever left out for grabs.
And yes the note said "this is my dog's last meal"
Hey all, another edit: I honestly don't think Denis stole the burgers, I mean who would eat a cheeseburger and cheese fries at 9am? They weren't even from a nice place--I just ordered because I thought it was cute that it was "Dog Haus" for my dog and they happened to be open. I think the more likely story is that he delivered them to the wrong address. I live in the heart of downtown Chicago and he probably delivered to another building. In any other situation, I would have a hard time caring less about a stupid cheeseburger. I am certain the front desk did not eat my cheeseburger because this building has over 700 apartments that order food in massive quantities daily. There's nothing so enticing about my $30 burger and fries that would inspire these folks to steal them.
I want you to know that Uber did escalate the case and refunded me and also gave me a future credit. I don't intend to use these because this was such a horrid experience, and I also never was much of a delivery person. To the person who said that I was too lazy to stop by the drive through, your reading comprehension sucks and I hope you have the same kind of empathy extended to you in your time of anguish.
And thank you all for your kind words. I miss my sweetheart so much I feel physically unwell, but I know I did everything medically possible for him and I did manage to get a breakfast sandwich and chocolate donut from Dunkin for him (plus a bison steak, pork chop, and half a pound of ham). He received his first injection in his bed while I hand-fed him these things, and he received the lethal injection with his head in my arms. It's really hard to "let their last day be a good one."

Genuinely I am furious just reading this. I’d personally go to some pretty extreme lengths to ensure the driver is reprimanded, although there’s only so much we can do. I am sorry for your loss, I’m sure your pupper is eating a million cheeseburgers in heaven. 🫂 He knows you loved him.

I’m just saying if I was on door dash as a dasher and I saw any delivery for their dog I’m going above and beyond I’ll literally get extra stuff for the pup, I’m a dog person and I know the feeling but I would make sure to get twice as fast as possible maybe even speed a little that pup deserves its meal, but I am sorry for your loss my your pupper rest well and play in the fields above
13
u/ZetusLapeeetus 27d ago
I don't know why this sub always shows up for me because I am not a dasher and I dont order from them either but damn I would also be bringing that good boy something extra and putting my foot down to get there in time.
2
u/belltrina 26d ago
Preach. I'd be explaining the situation to the restaurant and insisting they check it was made perfect. Hell, I'd seatbelt the bag in and drive like i was carrying an organ donation.

u/Personal_Papaya3778 23d ago
I would be an absolute mess walking away from it but same. I would climb a damn fence to get that burger to that dog, and I am 5'2 and have never climbed a fence in my life. Denis needs to be smacked

Is there the required picture of the bag of food being left where you asked, namely the front desk?
8
u/thisisnotabombx 27d ago
i see everyone on this sub and other similar subs saying they always take a photo etc.
however when i get delivery i always ask for a picture when they leave it at the desk and no one ever sends a picture lol
2
u/bluesteel117 26d ago
They are required to take a picture to complete the delivery, at least I always am. The picture is always on the order history
1
2
u/CoeurdAssassin 27d ago
I always take the photo and then just message afterwards that they wouldn’t let me up
16
u/bizznach 27d ago
I would be livid, but also as a delivery person I would gather info to make sure whoever i take revenge on is the person responsible.
Would suck to blame a driver while someone else did your dog dirty!
god speed lil doggo ❤️
9
u/tiredofyourface2 27d ago
It would be the person who picked up the food according to Uber. How would there be confusion?
5
u/bizznach 27d ago
people steal food all the time.
uber does bare minimum or zero to sort these problems out on all ends.
uber also blames their workers all the time when something happens.
4
u/reereejugs 27d ago
The front desk person could’ve stolen it for one.
7
u/TheyNeedLoveToo 27d ago
Right? the way the story reads, hot fresh food was just sitting at the desk for an undetermined amount of time. It very well could be a shitty driver but shitty humans exist in all types of work and opportunities
3
u/serendipity_aey 27d ago
I’m curious what else the front desk says. Who told the driver they couldn’t go up or does every worker swear no driver ever came in? If someone at the front desk did tell the driver no what happened after?
4
u/CoeurdAssassin 27d ago
I find this a common issue with some apartment buildings. It’s usually those fancy high rises located in more city-like or adjacent areas. Some apartment buildings the leasing office or the front desk person will be like “cool, elevators over there past the mail room”. Others, they straight up tell you you have to leave it in some electronic cubbies or at the desk. Won’t let you up at all.
1
u/BatDaddyWV 26d ago
Oh ffs! people with real jobs dont risk them for a burger! I know yall think stealing food is just part of the job, but the rest of us find you to be disgusting thieves when this happens.
5
4
u/KaneinEncanto 27d ago
If there's any karma to be had... When Denis has his last meal one day, may your dog be there to 'greet' him first on the other side.
While it might seem harsh to some: Let's remember that this probably isn't Denis' first time stealing someone's meal, and it probably won't be the last either. The messages are practiced, commonly used lines for theives.

4
u/__m3nac33 27d ago
I get this is emotional, but some of y’all (the ppl under this thread) are genuinely losing your minds and saying batshit crazy stuff about a situation that isn’t black and white nor warrants the stuff y’all are saying. The front desk could’ve ate the food for all we know, story could be fake, or the driver didn’t even see the note.
4
2
u/muffinbaobao 25d ago
The people saying to dox the driver and find him irl (likely to harm him) are crazy. If he stole the food, that’s obviously a terrible thing to do, but going after him like a lynch mob is fucked up.

That absolutely sucks. I'm sorry to hear that and I'm sorry for your loss. Losing a pet is so fucking awful. Grief is not a one size fits all thing to work through. Take this for what it's worth - the only thing your pet cared about in those last moments, was being with you. No burger necessary. It absolutely sucks that some delivery driver deprived you of that gesture, but I can promise you that your pet had everything they needed in those last moments - and that is you.
2
u/Rare-Echo-386 27d ago
The rage you feel is justified. I have goosebumps and tearing up over your loss and how much you just wanted him to have one more walk, one more cheeseburger. Im so sorry this happened during the hardest day for you. Im crying for a reddit stranger. RIP your beloved dog

2
u/pigglywigglie 26d ago
I’m so sorry you are going through this. Losing a loved one is awful and this just makes a bad day worse. My sister passed away from lung cancer this year and I know she’ll give him a fat cheeseburger, cheese fries and all the snuggles until you meet him again. He’s also got all my grandparents and if I know them, they’re fighting over who gets to give him lots of love! I know it’s not the same but he’s got a lot of people that will take great care of him until you get to see him again.
Denis if you’re reading this, I hope you stub your toes, all the air in your tires disappears and you only hit red lights.
4
u/barti_dog 27d ago
I am absolutely heartbroken for you over the loss of your good boi. If there is 24 hour front desk, then they would be able to confirm the drop-off. Though they may not admit to stealing the food if they did.

3
u/nucleus_BLACK 27d ago
Y'all blaming the driver is wrong in this situation, from what I'm reading he did his job. He was instructed to leave the food at the front desk and he did because according to OP he was at the building to complete the order and it's off his hands. Let this be a reminder for you, if you're address isn't easily accessible then maybe meet the driver that has your food instead of having he/she leave it at a place that ANYONE can steal.
3
u/PsychologicalTwo505 27d ago
He maybe was at the building but according to front desk, never dropped it off.
OP says they know front desk staff well and didn’t suspect them of stealing it.
1
u/nucleus_BLACK 26d ago
Nope, not buying it. The driver traveled all the way to the destination just to steal the food.... nah, it was left where support conformed him to leave it. The customer could of easily looked at the security cameras to spot the thief since it was a the front desk, but he never mentioned that in his story. I have a feeling the customer lost the claim with Uber eats support and they sided with the driver which tells you a lot because they never really side with the driver.
2
u/ItsNovrix 25d ago
The driver traveled all the way to the destination just to steal the food.... nah
That does in fact happen at times.

u/QuantativeSleazing 27d ago
"You all" (not using a made up word like Ya'll) suck, its this mentality that ensures one needs to resort to delivery driving to support oneself. One needs to show dedication and commitment and follow-through to have an actual job.
5
u/core-x-bit 27d ago
Y'all is recognized by Oxford Dictionary and Merriam-Webster as a legitimate contraction of 'you all'.
2
u/nucleus_BLACK 27d ago
Dummy, support is going to tell them to leave it at a safe location and move on if delivery location is not accessible.

If its heart felt, meaningful, sincere, valuable...never involve Uber. They are a joke of a service. Uber is known for over priced late deliveries with a high risk of being stolen. And guess what? Uber has this feedback and does nothing! They would rather pay drivers 50c less per order and deny more refunds than address their quality control.
This sub is loaded with genuine people and genuine situations, trampled on by daddy uber and their greed to look good to shareholders on the next s&p report. This company is not for sincere situations. But they will continue pushing the image that they are, and delivering uniquely upsetting experiences only Uber can provide.
Yeah the driver is a piece of shit. But you cant go after individual pieces of shit when a larger machine is manufacturing, churning, and hoisting up pieces of shit. Theres a million pieces of shit working for Uber. Because when you pay someone $2 an order, show them fake inflated offers that are stolen just to deny reimbursement for gas and time, then fail to provide a driver with offers for 1+ hours...yes, uber manufacture this rage. No company paying their workers proper and treating their work ethic proper, has issues of drivers stealing from grieving customers. Fucking piece of shit Uber.
Your first step in grieving this should be to never give this company money ever again. God I hate this fucking company.

OP, that is such a crap experience. I understand entirely about wanting to give your boy one last great feed before the kind goodbye. We had an a mobile vet help out boy pass, and we also gave our boy special food. I would have been devastated if this had been us having your experience.
Obviously you're familiar with the refund and complaint process, so I won't repeat it. Can you tell me about your boy, what yous enjoyed doing together? How did you discover he loved burgers?

I'm so sorry. My pup was diagnosed with liver cancer just over a year and a half ago. I wanted to get or make him a burger for his last meal as well. Unfortunately he got worse quickly after his diagnosis and stopped eating. He was gone within a couple of days. The only thing that makes me feel better about it is that he had some ice cream with his pain medication. As soon as he stopped licking the ice cream I knew he was going to go soon and left us that night.
I know this isn't because of another human, but I had been planning for him to have a burger for forever. I'm sorry your dog didn't get his burger either. Fuck cancer and I hope Denis receives his karma.

You saying you dont have time to to "micromanage" a driver who is currently standing outside your building locked out is peak narcissism.
You pay to live in a secured building, you know its secured and they cant get in... if you cant handle yourself over a dog enough to let a fellow human deliver the food the last 1% of the way to you, you dont deserve the food and youve failed as a human.
Your dog is dying, but the human is there and youre ignoring him, thinking only of your own selfish situation.
I 50000000% guarantee you that your front door staff isnt as dedicated and perfect as you naively think they are. I guarantee you that either someone in your building stole your food or the driver never left it there because they had no way to confirm it would even get to you.
Ive personally taken food back to the restaurant because of that, and ive also had food left out for someone who said they werent quite home yet and ordered early and didnt balance their schedule and then it was stolen because you dont book me for the whole night to wait around and secure your food for a measly $10.
For $10, you get me for 15 minutes at best, considering that it took me time to get TO the restaurant, I had to wait at the restaurant, then I delivered it to you (early) and have already by that time put in the time and effort to earn that money....by that time, youre on borrowed time. Im an extremely patient person, (Diamond on Uber, Platinum on DD) but after 7-8 minutes, youre food is getting dropped off at the closest place I can physically access to your door and the rest is on you.
Youre a moron. Your dog is gone, consider caring about your fellow humans a bit more now, maybe be less disconnected. Your dog didnt give a shit about the meal he didnt know wasnt coming.

As a deliver driver myself, if I read “dogs last meal” as much as I personally dislike apartments because of how often complicated they are to get across, I would go beyond my comfort zone and deliver that burger to you at your door mat, or door. I’m so sorry that happened to you and I hope your dog is enjoying endless cheeseburgers in heaven. I personally would report the driver, I’m usually biased for fellow drivers like myself but this is infuriating

Had so many bad experiences with Uber eats it’s unreal, some orders can be £40+ and the total lack of care from them is disgusting, they are robbing the nation and we keep paying because we love convenience. It’s a vicious circle and people are definitely being exploited

This sub and DoorDash sub are filled with drivers talking about they mess with peoples food or purposely delay deliveries because people don’t tip enough. It’s 100% a large portion of drivers
2
u/BatDaddyWV 26d ago
They will deny it, but the proof is real fuckin easy to find. I have never seen so many employees with such absolute rage at customers. They brag constantly about not completing orders to delivery instructions and think they are 100% justified in doing so. These subs are full of bitter malcontents.
3
u/TheyNeedLoveToo 27d ago
Meh, it’s not even the majority of the posts on here. Most posts are asking about ways to maximize earnings, bitching, and tips/tricks. “100% a large portion of drivers” is a dumb way to type. A large portion denotes a majority. You are wrong. If the majority of orders are being stolen, delivery apps would’ve folded long ago.
1
u/DaKrazie1 27d ago
Nobody says they mess with the food stfu lol..
And you've probably never even had a driver that's heard of those groups 🤣
2
u/OlympianLady 27d ago
Dude, this person is wrong baselessly claiming it's a "large portion" of drivers based on Reddit nonsense, but I don't know why you're claiming nobody says they mess with the food either. People claiming they steal, tamper with, eat off of, or leave the food in weird places, or defending such, is a super common thing in the driver subs, especially in response to anyone saying they had an issue.

Choose your battles. You couldn’t provide this last meal, but your dog didn’t know about it, and regardless realizes the love of his owner I’m sure. You can be remorseful about the fact that you left your dog’s last meal to a delivery driver, but I recommend picking up the important things yourself in the future. Try and heal.
1
u/BatDaddyWV 26d ago
JFC, even when yall are trying to be nice you still have to throw in the "get it yourself".
1
u/tiredofyourface2 27d ago
So ditch their dog in its last hours to pick up the stuff? That’s ridiculous.
That driver stole their food after getting a great tip. Even if it wasn’t the dog’s last meal, that driver would still be a bad person.

yeah here’s the thing… you can continue focusing on what went wrong or you can celebrate the joys of your four legged partner. being emotional and hurt and making a post being upset and calling someone out who op clearly knows wont read this post is just unnecessary and doesn’t really help anything

And once again, neither did your comment. So maybe you both have something to think about.

I'm sorry this happened; it may have been a communication issue. Did you let the driver know?
I still think they should've delivered it as requested; but maybe letting them know how important it is would've made a difference.

Ah yes, let them just write a novel on where to leave it when dealing with the loss of a family member. Delivery drivers shouldn’t have to be told how important something is. Also in OP’s post they said they couldn’t micromanage a driver.

Responding to a message or meeting someone in a lobby isn’t micromanaging though. How long did the food sit at the lobby is my question. Anyone could’ve grabbed it that had access to the lobby. Yes some drivers are thieves, but the bulk of us arent looking to risk our job or worse to eat your fast food. I can just work an extra hour or two and get my own exactly how I like it.

Could've also been mistaken to be a part of another order. Malicious intent is being assumed; but there's no way to know for certain.
I once ordered food for a celebration of life. I messaged the driver basically saying, hey this is very important that the food be delivered in full to this place. Driver said "OK!" and did it.
I just think OP had these expectations of the driver; and seems like a simple solution would be to relay that and to say "Hey, this order is super important. Please message me if there's any issues"

Fuck your delivery driver but your dog was loved and he no doubt knew that. He was happy when he left, cheeseburger or not.
