I'm 37, and I'm almost 11 months into HRT. This past year has completely changed my life.
I've lost weight, gotten healthier, been sober for over a year, and for the first time in a very long time, I actually like the person looking back at me in the mirror.
I'm happy being a woman. I don't regret transitioning. Not for a second.
But holy shit, the emotional side of this is exhausting.
I spent 37 years being someone everyone knew as a man. I was funny, stubborn, loyal, and the kind of person who would do anything for the people I loved. I wasn't a bad person. I was just carrying something nobody else could see.
And now that I'm transitioning, sometimes it feels like people are mourning someone who isn't even gone.
One of my closest friends told me he was afraid he'd end up hating me for "killing" the person he knew.
That hurt more than I can explain.
Because I didn't kill anybody. I'm still here.
I still have the same memories, the same terrible jokes, the same loyalty, and the same love for the people in my life. I'm just finally allowing myself to be happy.
And yet I feel like I'm having to introduce myself all over again to people who've known me for years. Like I have to earn back the love and friendship I already had.
Then there are my children.
I have three kids, ages 8, 10, and 16. I haven't spoken directly to them in over a year.
Our relationship started falling apart before my transition, back when I was struggling with alcohol. I take responsibility for that. I know my drinking affected my life and my relationships, and I can't pretend otherwise.
But I've been sober for over a year now, and I'm trying so hard to become a healthier, better version of myself.
Their mother tells me they don't want to talk to me and that they don't believe I've stopped drinking. I haven't heard that directly from them, so I don't really know what they're feeling.
I used to talk to them all the time. I used to have them stay with me. Now I send money for their birthdays because I've been asked not to send gifts.
Today was one of my children's birthdays, and I was told they didn't want to speak with me.
That absolutely broke my heart.
I miss everything about them. Their voices, their laughter, their hugs. Just being their parent.
I know sobriety doesn't magically repair relationships. I know rebuilding trust takes time, and I know I can't force anyone to forgive me.
But God, I miss my babies.
And on top of that, I'm getting ready to come out at work.
I'm terrified. Not because I'm ashamed of being transgender, but because I don't want people to stop seeing me as a person. I don't want to become office gossip or suddenly be treated like some stranger.
I just want people to treat me the same.
And then there's my mom.
God, I want my mom.
She doesn't even know I'm transgender yet, and I'm terrified to tell her. She's never said anything hateful about trans people. I'm just so scared of losing her love that I can't bring myself to have that conversation.
When I think about telling her, all I want is to hear five words:
"I will always love you."
It's such a strange feeling to finally love yourself and simultaneously be terrified that the people around you might stop loving you.
Lately, everything has been hitting me emotionally. Wave after wave. I find myself fighting back tears at work because I don't know how to hold everything together anymore.
I even had an urge to drink again recently. I didn't, and the craving passed, but I felt ashamed that the thought had even crossed my mind.
I've made a therapy appointment because I'm realizing I can't keep carrying all of this by myself.
And the hardest part is that I'm genuinely happier with myself than I've ever been.
I love who I'm becoming. I also love the person who got me here.
They're not two different people. They're both me.
I don't want to go back. I don't regret transitioning. I just wish becoming myself didn't feel so much like risking everyone I love.
I'm not really looking for someone to fix everything. I think I just need to get this off my chest and hear from women who've been through something similar.
Has anyone else experienced this? Being happier with yourself than ever before, but feeling like your relationships and emotions are falling apart around you? How did you get through it?
