The Shane Gillis SNL monologue was funny.

The internet is erupting with the Shane Gillis monologue, criticizing him for saying "women dress like whores at the gym now." When you actually watch the stand-up monologue, it has a much different tone than what's being described. People pulled out this one little thing and are freaking out.

He also said "gyms are just full of the hottest gay guys you've ever seen" and referenced the gay guys looking at him. He also called himself fat multiple times. He also called himself "a gas station egg." He also joked about his receding hairline making him look like Hitler. He also said "I look like a lesbian" in regards to his figure & his Bud Light commercials. Nobody is coming for him about the weight jokes or the gay jokes or anything else. Only the joke about women in the gym.

People pulled out the word "whore." I'm curious to know what a better word or phrase would have been? Even saying "women's gym clothes are so small now" would have pissed these same people off.

People pulled out "artificial bait." He wasn't referring to the women - he was trying to describe the color of the clothing with a better word than just "neon." You can hear him trip over his words/pause trying to find a better & funnier descriptor on the spot.

People pulled out how he was talking about how short the shorts are. But ladies, come on... As a woman myself who works out regularly, the tiny spandex that barely cover your ass are NOT good workout attire. They ride up, they get shoved up in all the wrong places, they're uncomfortable to work out in, you're constantly having to pull them down... Wear whatever the hell you want to the gym. But let's be real here. Commenting on how tiny these shorts are & how far up people's asses they are is not insulting. It's a reasonable observation worth joking about. Workout clothes are supposed to be functional first and cute second.

People pulled out him saying "seriously don't look, they're filming. I'm definitely in the back of a lot of TikToks." But he said this after saying "you're not allowed to look." He was making a joke about not being a creep, but also how hard it is to not notice bright ass neon colors, and also making a self-deprecating joke about coming off as a creep.

He makes a joke later on about trying really hard to not look creepy or scary to a passing woman on a hike and trying to find some way to let her know she's safe.

People are saying that it's harmful because it's normalizing this language about women. But tbh, I think what's really harmful is a) to not be able to actually listen to what someone is saying, even jokingly, without throwing up your red flags at the first sign of discomfort, and b) to not be able to laugh about your own experiences.

Comedy is built on poking at everyday experiences. He's done way better performances than this, for sure, but it was funny.

EDIT TO ADD:

Woooooof okay, some of y'all are bringing some really negative energy toward each other in the comments.

My point was that Shane Gillis wasn't being offensive. Sure, people are going to disagree with me. That's why it's a hot take. That's perfectly okay (and kind of the point of the sub??). But going into the comment section to harass the women disagreeing with me is not okay.

Having a debate or a disagreement is one thing, but some of y'all are just being rude for the sake of being rude.

Having a different train of thought, a different perspective, or a different opinion, does not make someone less than you.

The people disagreeing with me are allowed to have their own thoughts and opinions, just like I am. Say what you wanna say, but goodness... Don't be nasty

Telling someone they're being dramatic and "must be on your period" because they spoke about assault is actually wild, you guys...

If you have been harassed in the comment section (I think you know by who...), I am so sorry. I am reporting as I see them.

UPDATE:

I'm definitely realizing there are more than two sides to this coin.

I'm still not personally offended by it, but I also may just be surrounded by more respectful men than most and have a different perspective on the whole thing.

It's interesting (and saddening) how this post seemed to have given "permission" to some folks to be nasty and talk down to women in a way that didn't even have anything to do with the topic in question. Which, I suppose, is a lot of the commenters entire points.

Y'all have officially reversed my hot take, or at least drawn me into the middle ground. I wasn't offended by the jokes he made, but I see now how he has created a "safe space" for negativity towards women.

Thank you all for your comments. I read as many as I could!

A gentle suggestion for you: if the men who are taking your side are also aggressively harassing the women who disagree with you... Maybe you might want to think about reconsidering the stance you're taking? You are the company you keep.

Perhaps your edit might give you some insight on reflection why people don't consider this a funny topic.

56

u/vote4bort 11h ago

Well the gay joke was about how hot they are, not that they look like sex workers. Kinda different.

What was funny about that line in particular? Like explain like I'm an idiot what the punchline is. Because I don't see what's supposed to even be funny there, "women wear revealing clothes at the gym", why is that funny? Does referring to them as sex workers make it funny somehow?

As an aside, it's completely ridiculous that he apologised for saying fuck but apparently calling women whores is fine.

26

u/Dazzling-Path6438 10h ago

You don't get it. Whore.

That's soooo funny. Like, whore. How are you not getting this?

2

u/kikibubbles85 2h ago

Lmao that’s a better joke right there.

4

u/CGVSpender 10h ago

I didn't see the monologue. I feel like a lot is resting on how many syllables he made the word.

Like was is just hore. Or ho-ar, or hoo-wahr, or preacher style hoe-ahr-ruh?

It was part of a broader joke about dreading going to the gym. The line(s) about women were part of the gym thing. How he's fat and feels extra bad about himself when he goes because as soon as he walks in, it's just hot men and hot women everywhere and he feels self conscious and watched and like he could fuck up or be insulted at any time. It wasn't a one-liner joke.

It wasn't the funniest standup in the world, but I don't think it was offensive.

10

u/AdEducational8149 9h ago

Sounds like he felt insecure so decided to try and shit on other people to make himself feel better. Sounds lame!

19

u/vote4bort 10h ago

That doesn't explain why it was funny to call them whores. If he was making a joke about hot women and hot men, he called the men hot and the women whores. That's a bit odd, don't you think?

Whore is an insult. It is used as an insult almost exclusively. Why are you acting surprised that people are insulted by an insult?

1

u/MyhraBooboo 13m ago

It's an observation that women's gym attire has focused more and more on attracting the male gaze, much like how whores are traditionally dressed.

You believing that women are so wonderful that you don't like that term being applied to gym-going women and want an apology or something is what's odd.

19

u/ModeratelyOffline 10h ago

If you’re trying to call women hot, you can use a lot of words other than “whore.”

3

u/CaptainOwlBeard 9h ago

So calling women whores didn't add to the joke at all? It was just said near a joke?

5

u/alayeni-silvermist 9h ago

How is calling a woman a whore calling her hot? Is that how you refer to hot women? So you call all attractive women whores? I’m still not getting what’s funny. Explain it like I’m five.

18

u/PandaMime_421 10h ago

You didn't answer the question, "Does referring to them as sex workers make it funny somehow?"

If it was funny, go call your mom a whore and see if she or anyone else is laughing.

19

u/BetterGoogleit17 11h ago

Exactly. If your wife or girlfriend dresses up and shows a little cleavage, go ahead and say: "damn baby! You are dressed like a whore right now" I bet you a million dollars she doesn't laugh.

1

u/Responsible_Pie8156 4h ago

a little cleavage

He's talking specifically about the pants that are designed to give you a wedgie and show everybody your buttcrack lol. Why do you have to misrepresent it, nobody said anything about 'a little cleavage'

1

u/Long_Suspect_9586 53m ago

Go to any gym in Brooklyn and all you see is cameltoe, its gross. I don’t want to see dick prints or cameltoe in gyms. Let’s not even mention bare asscheeks touching shared equipment

10

u/strangeloop414 11h ago

I mean, you said it wasn't a big deal to say that to women and it was funny, so wouldn't she laugh?

8

u/BetterGoogleit17 11h ago

I mean, I can't believe it's the year 2026 and we are still having these conversations. We've squashed so many derogatory and hateful terms since I've been alive (48M) and calling a woman a whore or slut isn't one of them? F'ing really!?

4

u/strangeloop414 11h ago

Agreed, I am around your age and the rise of aggressive slurs has escalated so much in the past ten years it's kind of shocking and disgusting. Fascism sadly does that :(

6

u/BetterGoogleit17 11h ago

Yeah totally. We damn well know EXACTLY why these people came out of the woodwork, and why they got sudden bravery to say shit like this.

6

u/strangeloop414 11h ago

As my dad used to say, people are getting way too comfortable talking like this on the internet, but they'd never say it on the street. I think our need for politeness is crushing everyone. We used to stomp nazis !

4

u/BetterGoogleit17 10h ago

For sure. I kindof wish we could go back to pre-internet days sometimes. On the other hand, there have been some amazing technological advances due to the internet, so I guess we have to take the good with the bad. I imagine AI will shape up to be the same way eventually. People already don't know how to talk to each other properly anymore because of the internet. Can you imagine if people don't have to talk to each other at all because of AI? They just talk to the machine. The future is going to be weird.

6

u/strangeloop414 10h ago

It really is weird, I completely agree!

Ah yes, a guy making a generalization during a comedy routine vs. just calling a specific person a whore to their face. What a good faith response.

10

u/strangeloop414 10h ago

Well, if he thought it was funny on stage, why would it not be funny to his mom as well? or was it not funny and he just wants to call women that when it's not personal to HIM?

→ More replies (7)

6

u/colamonkey356 10h ago

If it was funny during a comedy routine shown to millions, why wouldn’t it be funny to say to a person’s face? 😭

1

u/auntiesamautism 10h ago

Because a comedy routine and day to day personal life are different? If you enjoy playing Call of Duty does that also mean you’d enjoy being in a real war?

1

u/colamonkey356 10h ago

So why make jokes that aren’t funny in your day to day life if the point of jokes is for them to be funny?

3

u/auntiesamautism 10h ago

Unreal that who I’m presuming is a grown adult needs to be taught the concept of “context.”

5

u/colamonkey356 10h ago

I guess. I still didn’t find it funny and it seems like the vast majority of the comments agree with that so….sounds like this Shane guy is a bad comedian. If he’s your cup of tea, then why do you care how I feel?

3

u/auntiesamautism 9h ago

Way to shift the goalposts. Because strangeloop said an incredibly stupid, bad faith argument, and you tried to defend it.

4

u/colamonkey356 9h ago

I don’t think calling women whores is good faith either so, I guess we’re both unhappy. I’ll call it the truce of unhappiness!

2

u/auntiesamautism 9h ago

Just wondering, what comedians do you like? I’ll bet I could find examples of them saying some not so nice things in their standup. Almost like the majority of the population knows comedians tend to say irreverent things in their standup and you’re not supposed to take it too seriously because it’s a joke. But since the joke personally offended you know it’s a problem.

You really don't understand human interactions, do you?

2

u/colamonkey356 10h ago

I do, it’s just silly to me. If jokes are supposed to be funny, what’s the point of making jokes you can’t actually repeat to someone’s face?

That’s why I don’t like edgy humor. It’s just…not funny to me. “har har you whore because you wore crop top haha i so funny” like….there’s just no appeal to me.

1

u/OnlyACsNoFans 10h ago

You really don't. It's obvious from your comments

4

Seeing a man call women whores as part of his snl monologue the same day people were arguing about what counts as gang rape (in reference to the Cornell 7) was extremely depressing and demoralizing as a woman. Every single day I’m reminded and bombarded with information and news and clips and videos that i am not a person to most people. That violence against me doesn’t/won’t matter. I just want to exist in peace and be seen as a human. So no, I didn’t find it funny.

1

u/LifeDifficult5486 4h ago

Oh no someone made a joke about women dressing inappropriately at the gym how ever will you survive?

1

u/smokepigs 17m ago

Oh no someone expressed how the "joke" isn't even funny, are you going to be ok?

-6

u/OldSchooolScrub 11h ago

Cause people don't automatically accept an accusation as rock solid proof and immediately hang 7 guys for it, you're exhausted? Must be a difficult life if that's the only thing you can come up with.

6

u/Both_Respect_4390 10h ago

Every single woman I know has been sexually assaulted or raped. I can’t do my job peacefully without men being gross pervs. I’ve been sexualized, objectified, dehumanized and harassed since I was a child. And when we talk about it, we get insensitive and often violent responses from incel chuds like you who can’t fathom an existence other than their own. So yeah, I’m tired.

I know some people might disagree, but there is actually a funny way to call women whores. This wasn't really that. It wasn't a punch line. It was just an observation in which he inserted an offensive word. And I'm a woman who actually does think Shane is funny sometimes. He is just a dude who only hangs out with dudes, often shitty dudes, and it really shows in his comedy.

Stavros has called women whores a bunch of times and I've always found it funny. It's as a bit being super absurd or in a ridiculous character. Shane wasn't being absurd and being over-the-top offensive for the whole monologue, just that one line saying whore.

It was giving the same energy as someone who just thinks slurs are funny to say.

2

u/sach2269 1h ago

“Whores” is too strong and kind of dated. If he had modified it to “Hoes” or “strippers” it would’ve been less cringe.

1

u/MediocreTurtle1 5h ago

He's a dude that shitty dudes like, that I agree with. For some reason you mentioning that and Stavros got me thinking, from a women's perspective, how do you perceive Stavros?

Because as a guy, I can see through the bullshit that he's slimy and if he wasn't successful, he'd be the guy that tries to weasel his way into getting together with women however he can.

1

u/SchemeMoist 3h ago

I actually really like him. I like his politics and world-view and tbh he hasn't really been super successful for long and there hasn't been anyone who has said a bad word about him.

He has plenty of women on his podcast and treats them just like his guy friends. I see that as a good thing as opposed to when male comedians are like, kinda weird to their female guests. I really appreciate when men treat women as people, rather than as ~women~

I don’t know why people assume he isn’t doing this intentionally.

Shane’s following started because he was fired for SNL for inappropriate comments (more specifically, racial slurs). He gained a following like Morgan Wallen where people supported him because he said something offensive. (I mention Morgan Wallen because his streaming increased dramatically after the video of him saying the N word came out. Conservatives started listening to him because he’s racist).

It makes total sense that now, as a repeat guest on SNL, Shane would intentionally say things to offend people in his monologue. That is what has worked for him in the past…

2

u/chubbymoose1234 11h ago

makes sense, he does capitalize on the controversy

1

u/eSsEnCe_Of_EcLiPsE 9h ago

You guys are providing it for him though.

1

u/GeneralAudience8427 9h ago

I view it the other way. No one is actually offended by this but some influencers will try to make it a thing to ride his coattails. Look at the Chelsea Handler comments after the Netflix roast.

14

u/Thecuckeningends 11h ago

nah it was super mid

12

u/Happy-Conclusion2148 9h ago

It's simply not funny. It's not an original observation, he doesn't have any kind of clever take on it, he just called women whores.

If you need 10 paragraphs to explain why a comedy routine was funny, it wasn’t funny 😅

4

u/eSsEnCe_Of_EcLiPsE 9h ago

It’s needed when illiterate pearl   clutching Redditors can’t tell the difference between someone saying people look/act/dress like something and people are something.

1

u/TheScrote1 9h ago

I strongly disagree on that one. The funniest stand ups I’ve ever seen have long overarching themes and the jokes are funny because they keep getting tied back to the theme. Then a friend asks you how the show was and if there were any funny jokes and you have to explain how the theme was set up before you can even get to the joke.

What I think you’re missing is that so many women are so tired right now. It feels like the media is just a gender war and people hate women. Is it the biggest deal? no, he could have said way worse however with the cornell 7 and lindsey clancy and how things are right now, to turn on SNL and hear another fucking comment about how we’re whores for wearing shorts to the gym when men don’t even wear shirts? it feels like such an exhausting double standard and we’re tired (this is coming from someone who’s watched most of shane’s netflix show tires and to his credit i did like it)

6

u/Massive-Ride204 10h ago

I can imagine that it's very exhausting for women right now

1

u/Responsible_Pie8156 4h ago

so many women are so tired right now. It feels like the media is just a gender war

Genuinely what I think you're tired of is being fed propaganda designed to drive a narrative ahead of the midterms. And somehow the conversation about all of these things you mentioned always loops back to trump.

we’re whores for wearing shorts to the gym when men don’t even wear shirts

I've been going to the gym for decades and I literally don't think I ever seen a man shirtless outside the locker room. Also why gaslight about the joke? One, he's talking specifically about the shorts which are intentionally designed to show everybody your buttcrack. Two, that's not even the punchline, the punchline is him being in the background of a bunch of tiktoks looking awkward and creepy and I thought it was a funny mental image

Disagree. My mom who is a middle-aged midwestern suburbanite with a normal job and a Facebook account she can't remember the password too has talked to me about this, about how what she sees in the news saddens her and about how she thought the “take back the night walks” when she was in college were making progress but here we are now, decades later with the same old problems, jokes, and debates.

When Roe V. Wade was overturned, my dad apologized to her, because for years he’d been saying it was all just jokes and rhetoric and that nothing was actually changing for women. He was wrong. I'm probably chronically online, but thia isn't just an issue that the chronically online are noticing or affected by.

it feels like such an exhausting double standard

do you think that when I see a guy's cock and nut sack in the gym I'm not wishing he wore baggier fucking shorts? or when his sweat is on the machine I'm not wishing he covered his fucking midriff? what double standard are you talking about? the one where when a man kills his kids he's a monster but when a woman does it she's a patient suffering from complex mental illness and ultimately a victim of system failures? those double standards? you think you're the only one tired? i haven't even look at the cornell case yet because i'm certain when I do it's just going to piss me off tbh

this isn't even a new joke; the only reason it's apparently a problem now is because of the cornell shit and the litany of articles writing about how men need to condemn gang rape as if the reason that still happens is a lack of information

It feels like the media is just a gender war and people hate women.

Because that's what gets the attention (and money).

It's all just culture war, gender war, class war... and sometimes actual war.

Everybody is tired of that.

1

u/chubbymoose1234 10h ago

yes. so that’s why women are tired of hearing casual mysognistic comments

Racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of bigotry are not allowed. Content that attacks, degrades, or expresses hatred toward people based on protected or inherent characteristics may be removed and can result in a temporary or permanent ban.

Hot takes can get heated, but keep the discussion focused on the opinion, not the person. Bullying, harassment, insults, and personal attacks aren’t allowed.

Disagree all you want. Just don’t be a jerk about it.

Why is everything incels say so fucking gay. They’re really complaining about seeing a woman’s butt? They’re shaming women for that? Ok how about you never see ass ever again. I’m gonna wear the most lumpy diaper ass garment I can find from here on out.

Which reminds me didn’t they complain about our mom jeans for that very reason? We truly can’t win.

Anyway I’m gay and there’s nothing better than a woman’s physique. The only demo who should be mad about this is uptight straight Karen’s.

Can we not have some fucking fun my god the world is falling apart gentlemen!

4

u/CitronDonkeyKong 11h ago

Some parts were funny, some were less so. The whores part would have been less of a controversy if it was funnier. That’s kind of a hacky joke, like yeah we all know lots of women show their bodies. That hasn’t been anything new for a long time.

10

u/ModeratelyOffline 11h ago

Yea, it feels like a lot of people hide bad jokes behind “everyone is so sensitive nowadays!” You can write a good joke about a marginalized community. For example, I’ve seen Mary Beth Barone’s bit about queer owned businesses get a lot of positive feedback from the queer community because it’s genuinely funny. Meanwhile, Robby Hoffman isn’t as well received in the queer community because the jokes just aren’t that good.

1

u/CarrieDurst 1h ago

Like Robby's acting but the jokes can be weird and sexist

just bc you don't like women in short shorts doesn't make it a bad look. and if you think it is, then stop fucking looking weirdo

If you want to your bare sweaty ass cheeks and snail trail touching gym equipment, then buy a home gym.

2

u/britneys_bigtoe 29m ago

i don't go to the gym but if i did i wouldn't be calling women whores and talking about how my hairline makes me look like hitler

i just walk the neighborhood. it's free

6

u/LePetitNeep 11h ago

Not sure how you can misunderstand the difference between self deprecation and attacking others, and within attacking others, punching up versus punching down. Good comedy punches up.

1

u/OnlyACsNoFans 9h ago

Good comedy doesn't care which direction it punches.

Addressing your edit, when you let one whore joke go, that's what happens. We have to defend against every instance of misogyny, or else it gets worse. This is what women live with every day.

2

u/Feeling_Loquat8499 6h ago

Women do indeed live with histrionic overreactions and a need to police every single social interaction

No, it wasn't.  I also dhave not think it was offensive...I just don't find Gillis that funny when he does comedy.  I think he's a funny guy in interviews and podcasts.  I also think he has far more potential to continue growing and being successful than any of his comedy "buddies" because he at least understands what comedy is and how it works.  Hes just to up his own ss when it comes to the whole anti-woke, anti-cancel culture "jokes".  He still thinks he's edgy when mostly he's just being dumb and hack.

But he definitely had some potential there which is why he's managed to avoid most criticism.  He admits to being a dope and idiot, and he makes offensive jokes and can SOMETIMES pull it off by redirecting it back on himself.  But it fails more than it works.  Did anyone see his bit for the nba or whatever?  It was a couple slightly funny jokes and a ton of flips because he was trying way too hard to push the racial humour without just worrying about being funny first and edgy second.

Gillis is like a kid who still thinks sweating is the funniest thing imaginable.  But he shows signs of one day growing out of it.  Anyway, this is now 1/3 for Gillis on SNL where one episode was amazing, but the last two have been some of the worst SNL episodes of the year.

3

u/Western-Boot-4576 10h ago

Aspiring to be Bill Burr. That guy is remarkable at riding the Razer's edge between offensive and funny.

It definitely wasn’t his best work, but it’s also for sure being taken out of context. I know that Shane doesn’t taken SNL very seriously (he shouldn’t) and I think he either half-assed his set because he didn’t care or this was the plan all along and the reaction he’s getting is the bit. I don’t think he did a great job and some of his bits were super hacky. Anyways, I get why women were frustrated with his set and believe that using the word whores was wrong, but I also think the bit was overall an attempt at self-deprecation. At the end of the day comedy fans fucking suck right now. The people who watch SNL feel the need to agree with the comedy they watch just as much as the Rogansphere idiot fans do. Personally speaking, I’ve watched a lot of live comedy over the years and both sides of this coin are annoying as shit. A few weeks ago I went to a Rosebud Baker show (I’m a huge fan) and watched her talk about how useless men are in a very pointed way for half of her set and I loved it! I didn’t take it personally and thought that her bits were on point. Did she use hyperbole and harsh language? Absolutely, because it’s a fucking comedy show.

3

u/Suitable_Spray 10h ago

I'm in the camp that I don't think it's funny because it's not really an original joke or observation (even with the whole context of him looking creepy or whatever in their video)

But the outrage over this.... Come on.. get the fuck over it. Save that energy for people who actually did some fucked up shit.

Literally seeing people comment things like "this might have been the joke that put a rapist over the edge" 🙄🙄🙄🙄 like jfc what a waste of human thinking

1

u/Rare_Polnareff 11h ago

The world has gotten so fucking soft lol.

Ironically social media is giving him way more attention over this than he probably would have got otherwise

13

u/chubbymoose1234 11h ago

yeah god i hate that calling women whores now is like “bad” or whatever, snowflakes

-2

u/straylight222 11h ago

You literally can't say anything these days without some pissy person pulling your shit out of context and complaining about it online. It'll be interesting to see when people finally get fed up and stop caring.

5

u/Rare_Polnareff 8h ago

It’s already been happening for a long time and the reason we are seeing fucking morons like trump as president.

These people that dump fuel into the manufactured outrage factory on a daily basis are the biggest enemy of actual progressivism.

The dude is a fat moron who regurgitated a shitty “joke” told in every high school locker room for the last 80+ years with awful delivery. It doesn’t deserve the smallest amount of attention lol

7

u/Inevitable-Angle-793 11h ago

"Can't call women whores without someone getting angry"

2

u/funnyguy806 11h ago

Hope this was sarcasm…if not, Way to prove a point

4

u/Inevitable-Angle-793 11h ago

It is, people feel too comfortable calling someone whore for slightest thing.

Mind you what he said in context was still awful in this political climate. Shane doesn't care. He's besties with a lot of conservatives and promotes their events and them as people.

Yeah but he is still him. He’s always been uninteresting.

Dolly would get it. She got her look from the town whore. I miss her every day.

1

u/Aromatic-Elephant110 2h ago

I just want comedians to be funny. I've heard, "hahaha women are whores," no less than 4,000 times. Making the same observation that everyone else makes isn't funny. Especially when the observations themselves are pretty banal and also not funny.

1

u/sach2269 1h ago

I feel like it would’ve been easy to tweak “women dress like whores” into “women really doll themselves up to look hot as possible at the gym” and compared them to strippers or Onlyfans influencers or something.

Not that it’s better, but it would’ve been a real take instead of this weird derogatory statement

1

u/CeilingCatProphet 35m ago

It was funny when he said that he went to the gym. The gym's name is Roy's Donuts.

0

u/OldSarge02 11h ago

He has people talking about it, which is the whole point. As an entertainer whose income is determined by how relevant he is, it was wildly successful.

0

u/Life-Food5188 10h ago

real quick: anything shane says or does in high profile spots like hosting SNL is going to reliably get these reactions. water wet, etc.

and also: it’s not whorish to dress scantily. that’s a stupid, retrograde opinion.

1

u/TheBourbonTurtle 11h ago

I chuckled. Far from his funniest stuff, but also far from his most offensive. And in general, he's not that offensive.

It's just exposing how many people have clearly never listened to a comedian talk before, they say far crazier and less accurate shit on a daily basis and no one seems to bat an eye.

Reddit just has a hate boner for Shane Gillis, but reddit also has zero idea what comedy is.

1

u/colamonkey356 11h ago

Just based off the description, this seems just as unfunny when he made a super racist “joke” to Kevin Hart. I get Kevin laughed but I didn’t.

I am not a fan of edgy humor, really. The edgiest humor I find funny is the humor in Lollipop Chainsaw. Like, we get it. Yes yes, men think women are whores because sports bra and mini short. Before men hated current female gym outfits, they hated leggings and yoga pants. We get it. Can someone PLEASE make a new joke? 🙏 I haven’t seen the actual episode, though, so anyone feel free to let me know if I misinterpreted.

6

u/DukeRains 10h ago

I didn’t watch it yet but a Shane fan.

But was there a joke attached to it or did he just call them whores for how they dressed?

6

u/CaptainOwlBeard 9h ago

"Also, I haven't been to the gym in so long. I didn't know women just dress like whores now. Look, I'm sorry, there's no other way to describe it..."

Not really. He just wanted to say that spandex makes women look like prostitutes. He then went on to complain about not being able to look at them without getting in trouble. I'm not sure what he was going for, but if he was trying to come off as a creep, he succeeded. He sounded like every 50 year old divorced dude talking about women when only men are around.

3

u/Western-Boot-4576 7h ago

Yeah. I don’t really see a joke and see why he’s getting shade.

His dad is a HS freshman girls volleyball coach. Are those girls whores too for wearing spandex for playing volleyball?

1

u/broke_collegebitch 10h ago

It was part of a whole thing about the gym. Overall theme of the standup was that he's fat & needs to work out.

2

u/Tasty_Gear_466 11h ago

Certain fitness influencers are quite literally dressing in ways that emphasize and present their anatomy in exaggerated clarity to sell sex for money online. It seemed pretty obvious to me that was what he was referring to (since he immediately transitioned into talking about being on TikToks), but if normal women going to the gym felt targeted and offended, I guess they get to feel however they feel.

My complaint is that the style, humor, and jokes just weren't...very funny? A couple of the sketches found a rhythm eventually, but for the most part, the delivery felt like your kind-of-funny friend. I think that may be his appeal in the Roganverse, as an everyman who always has a slightly funny quip. But it was hard to watch that after, say, Bill Burr or Nate Bargatze, or to feel like you weren't watching a bad misfit with the SNL format.

1

u/Legitimate-Sky8335 9h ago

Shane Gillis explains his chopped looks by "looking like a minority" (lesbian, Down syndrome) and calls it comedy.

1

u/gleaming-the-cubicle 9h ago

I liked the part where he sucked off Joe Rogan

1

u/WhatsAboveTheSubtext 8h ago

Nah. I think he's often hilarious, and I'd consider myself a fan. This was beneath him, and just not that funny. There were funny bits, but it wasn't consistent like he can be, and that made the "edgy" stuff stand out more as just awkward.

1

u/Dense_Medicine_3866 7h ago

I'm a woman. I'm sick of being called "whore" for what clothes I choose to wear. Do you agree I should be called a whore for what I wear?

1

u/Joey-rogaine 4h ago

This is the only correct opinion

1

u/Medium-Sir-3312 11h ago

Is this an AI post?

1

u/broke_collegebitch 11h ago

0

u/WindowFruitPlate 5h ago

It was freakin hilarious

The lib reactions and meltdowns make it a million times better

Chef’s kiss of comedy!

0

u/HypeMachine231 10h ago

I'm just gonna remind you that society as a whole dictates a lot of things, including what clothes are considered appropriate to wear. If you choose to push the envelope of what society deems appropriate you will get judged for it, called names over it, and have people look at you.

It's up to you if you're ok with that or not.

2

u/Exciting_Panic_3331 5h ago

Men wear nothing but shorts at the gym and that's fine, but a woman wearing shorts and a bra is grounds to call her a whore? Nah, I don't think that's just something we have to accept. It's a societal issue.

0

u/lalvarien 3h ago

dont worry, you're right and these haters are wrong. the bots have been programmed to disagree with you. even the bot-coded "real" humans.

-2

u/Chouxnicorn 7h ago

So you think calling women whores at the gym is funny?

6

u/jmura 7h ago

Only when you can see their labia through their yoga pants

1

u/mrcsrnne 6h ago

It can be, nothing is off the table in comedy

0

u/Prudent-Result1057 6h ago

Anything that remotely points out anything to do with women at all It’s this exaggerated response which varies depending on the situation but when they do it, it’s because men have destroyed the universe he didn’t say anything that hasn’t already been said 1 million times by 1,000,000 other people and half of that being women themselves

0

u/Electricfairygina 5h ago

Here goes another man talking about women as if he knows better than they do.

Unless you have tits and a vagina you have no idea what does and doesn't feel comfortable on tits and a vagina.
