MOD TAKE [MOD POST] - Updates and Feedback v1

Hello hello! Good afternoon and happy Wednesday to all.

Just jumping in with a few quick updates around the sub, along with a request for feedback from all of you: the hot takers who keep this place active, argumentative, occasionally chaotic, and generally worth moderating. Nothing dramatic, just a handful of general updates intended to keep things running a little more smoothly and make the subreddit easier to use, understand, and participate in.

Here's a list of what's been going on:

  • Rules update/clean up

The previous rules provided a great foundation for the subreddit, but some were difficult to interpret or apply consistently. A few overlapped with one another, while others left too much room for confusion in certain situations.

We’ve updated the rules to make them clearer, reduce unnecessary overlap, and better address the issues we most commonly encounter in day-to-day moderation.

  • AutoMod - 10 day account rule

As with any subreddit, we have our fair share of bots to deal with. We also encounter users who, after being banned, create new accounts and return as though nothing happened.

To help address both issues, we've implemented an AutoModerator rule that automatically flags and removes posts and comments from accounts less than 10 days old. While this won't eliminate the problem entirely, it should help reduce spam, discourage ban evasion, and keep discussions genuine and the community running smoothly.

Tangentially related, AutoMod will also now automatically clear reports made against AutoMod’s own post and comment removal messages.

To those of you reporting the robot for doing exactly what we told the robot to do: we see you. The robot also sees you. The robot does not care. evil robot laugh

  • Mod recruitment

We'll be reopening moderator recruitment in the next few days to add a few more people to the team. The subreddit stays fairly active, and bringing on a few additional moderators will help us keep up with reports, removals, and general day-to-day moderation.

The basic requirements are:

  1. Must be at least 21+ years of age
  2. Must have or be willing to get a Discord account as that's where we communicate
  3. Must be willing to meet once a month with the moderator team
  4. Must not have any logged infractions on your account

Newer or less experienced mods are welcome to apply.

  • Hot takers: help us judge the heat

While we welcome feedback at any time, there’s one idea that’s been floating around the mod team that I wanted to put in front of everyone. It has to do with how we determine the “temperature” of a hot take.

Currently, users can choose their own post flair to indicate how spicy they believe their take is. The obvious problem is that this is entirely subjective, and I think we’ve all seen posts labeled as "NUCLEAR hot take" that could comfortably be stored next to the frozen peas. We’ve been discussing whether there might be a fun way to let the community weigh in on how hot or cold a take actually is, rather than leaving that determination entirely up to the person who posted it.

One idea that came up is community voting. Similar to systems used in other subreddits, users could cast a vote in the comments based on our existing flair categories. After a set amount of time, the votes would be tallied and the post would automatically receive the flair the community decided it deserved.

We think it could be a fun way to give everyone another way to participate in the sub. Maybe you don’t have a three-paragraph rebuttal ready, maybe you don’t particularly care enough to argue about it, but you do know that calling that take “hot” is an insult to thermodynamics. Cast your vote and carry on.

Let us know what you think in the comments. If this is something people would like to see, we'd love to get to work setting it up!

In closing, we genuinely value feedback from the community. Even if your thoughts are unrelated to anything mentioned in this post, please feel free to leave a comment on this post and let us know how we’re doing.

Whether you think a rule should be added, removed, or changed, have suggestions for how moderation could be improved, or simply have an idea you think would make the subreddit better, we’d like to hear it. Community feedback helps us understand what’s working, what isn’t, and where we can continue to improve.

Thanks for reading!

Thorvald

lukewarm take Even if a child is more annoying than your “fur baby,” it is more important to have child-friendly spaces than pet-friendly spaces as children must be socialized to become competent adults.

1.7k Upvotes

I want to start by saying I am child free by choice and do not intend to have children, so this isn’t some excuse for my own parenting or whatever.

I see so many people on all sorts of online platforms complaining that their dog can’t go to restaurants, but loud kids can, or that their dog can’t go on a plane, but a crying baby can. I’m not saying anyone enjoys being on a flight next to a crying child or in a restaurant with loud kids. However, for a society to function, children have to be properly socialized. You didn’t just wake up one day knowing how to act in a restaurant or order for yourself. Even if you don’t remember it, other adults modeled that behavior for you. Does a kid have to be in a five star restaurant? No, and you’d rarely find one there as most parents cannot afford that anyway. However, a chain restaurant or local cafe? Sure.

Otherwise, in 15 years, we will end up with an entire generation that cannot eat a meal without a screen in front of them or ask the waiter for ketchup. And, sadly, in 15 years, your furbabies won’t be around anymore. I love pets, and they are great to have, but we all have a greater social responsibility toward young PEOPLE than pets.

Yes, kids can be so annoying sometimes, especially when parents aren’t doing their part to socialize them. (For example, telling them not to run around on a train car, which I personally see quite a bit.) But that’s really more on the parents than the kids, and if you leave those kids at home with their “laissez faire” parents rather than exposing them to how the normal adult world functions, they’ll be even worse off once they grow up…

casual hot take Men should raise their standards

A lot of men will complain that women standards are too high or unrealistic and they may be some truth to that but at the same time complaining won’t change anything so men should instead raise their standards and require more of women so the playing field will be more equal.

lukewarm take If your first thought is “racism” when someone talks bad about a black character, then you don’t respect said character outside his skin colour.

When Goku gets disrespected you don’t see people saying “You just hate Japanese people”

When superman or captain America is disrespected you don’t see people saying “You just hate Americans”

When Spider-Man is disrespected you dont hear “you just hate white men!”

When people shit on deadpool you don’t hear “you hate gay people”

Because people view these characters as characters to be critiqued and will meet you on that ground. They actually respect the characters.

But for some reason when you talk bad of Miles Morales, John Stewart or other dark skin characters the first thing you’re gonna hear is people calling you racist. And that’s because a lot of people don’t like these characters because they’re well written they just like em cause they’re black. They don’t see them as characters just for their skin colour.

I feel like if you're going to move to another country you should make tge effort to learn the language.

I see this happening a lot and I notice this most from spanish speakers. Some of them have been living in the US for 10+ years and don't know a single word of English. And at my job they start talking to me in Spanish. I tell them I don't speak it and they get mad at me that I don't speak spanish. And people in Miami have been saying that they can't get jobs because they only want hispanic people. The workers don't even know english and i'm like how did you get this job. If an American travels to a different country they tell us that we should learn their language but when they come to US they're not expected to learn English. I'm not saying you can't speak your language you are free to speak whatever language you want but when it comes to interacting with service workers or whoever don't be upset that we can't speak your language. Sometimes I wonder how they get jobs if they can't speak English. How does the interview process go? Also it's a safety issue like what if they were in danger and needed to contact the police. I think it's a double standard. If we tell them they should learn English we're called racist but other countries can tell us to learn their language and it's not an issue.

Men often forget that a huge consideration for women in dating is if they’d be a good dad.

HUGE DISCLAIMER: I am a woman and don’t think all women should or need to have kids. Anyone should only have a child if that’s fully what they want.

However, one thing I’m realizing more and more is that in men’s conversations about their dating issues online, I see a significant gap in what issues they think women are focusing on. Yes, women do usually want to be attracted to their partner (as do most men and just everybody in general), but at least as someone who did not have a super healthy household growing up, I personally was constantly sizing dudes up on if I thought they’d not only be a good dad physically but also emotionally.

If I heard even a smidge of intentional misogyny come from a man, I booked it because why would I have a daughter or a son with you if that’s how you talk about women? You’re probably also gonna expect our son to “be a man” and not to cry.

Truly I don’t think men understand that this is a huge issue for many women, I’m very much going to assume and have in fact seen many women on social media state that they would never date a conservative, MAGA, or red pilled man simply because their morals wouldn’t align.

Idk like what kind of a mother would I be if I raised a daughter with a misogynistic father? Or a son with a man who expects him to be a certain type of strict masculinity?

Reddit is not suitable for discussing controversial topics

I though China is a communist country, Reddit forum had been more communist and collective than Chinese forums, at least they only delete sensitive posts while I had been banned by multiple subs just for posting something the sub doesn’t approve of, well at least you should give me a warning or a time ban something but no they banned me immediately and permanently. I had been banned by Taiwan sub for expressing political views and guns sub just for posting photos of firearms without any captions or source. There is nothing such as freedom and democracy, no wonder Donald Trump is against leftists and the liberal hypocract, this is you so called democratic society.

Literally NO ONE is voting a certain way because of a candidates sign in your front yard.

"Oh, look, my neighbor put up a sign for that candidate - I guess I'll vote for them instead." said no one ever.

It's all just wasteful fucking blight. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

serious hot take If you can't defend those you hate at all, you're an ideological slave.

Seriously, we've become so obsessed with dividing the world into binaries like good and evil, right and wrong, oppressor and oppressed, that we've forgotten the human being behind the label. We assume people who disagree with us must be evil before we do any thinking at all, when most people genuinely believe they're acting according to some moral principle.

Do you actually understand the reasoning behind a position you disagree with? Or do you just write it off as evil? Have you actually, TRULY sat down and wondered why another human being, composed of the same bloody molecules as you, can do something you consider horrific? Have you actually GRAPPLED with their position? Their thoughts? Or do you dismiss them outright as morally bankrupt, stupid, maleducated, ignorant, malicious, and so on?

Let's take abortion. Some people argue from bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom, even at great cost. Others argue from the moral value of unborn life, even at great cost. Both sides believe they're defending something fundamental. Yet one side accuses the other of wanting to kill babies, while the other accuses its opponents of wanting to oppress women. Neither bothers to engage with the other's reasoning. It's easier to just decide: "Your side evil, my side good!" Insanity.

Even history's worst atrocities cannot be dismissed by simply painting their perpetrators evil and calling it a day. You can condemn someone's actions while still examining the beliefs that led them there. Understanding them isn't justification, by the way. It's how we make sense of human behavior and recognize the conditions that make atrocities possible.

If you can't understand why someone might sincerely believe they're doing the right thing, you probably don't understand their position at all. It would be like condemning everybody who kills because "killing bad!" What about self-defense? What about stopping a serial killer? What about someone who genuinely believes they're protecting others? Think!

And guess what? That makes you just as capable of committing atrocities as them. You won't even realize when the same forces and circumstances are shaping your actions, your reasoning, and your psyche. Do you seriously think the people who participated in history's worst atrocities were some kind of aliens who thought differently from you? They were fallible, carbon-based humans just like you. Sorry if that bursts your bubble of feeling morally virtuous and assuming you'd act differently if put in their position.

This doesn't mean every opinion is equally valid or that nobody acts maliciously. It means you should be able to make the strongest case for a position you oppose before attempting to dismantle it. You should be able to understand someone's reasoning without agreeing with their conclusions, and recognize the humanity of someone without excusing the harm they've caused.

Then fuckin' MAYBE we'd start to understand each other. Fuckin' MAYBE we'd actually have meaningful dialogue instead of hysterical name-calling and reducing entire groups of human beings to caricatures of evil incarnate.

Now give me my well-earned downvotes.

NUCLEAR hot take Being fat or overweight doesn’t mean you’re ugly.

Hi, first post here. I am genuinely sick of seeing people ostracize fat people and call them unattractive because of their weight. Some people think you can only be attractive if you’re skinny and it’s just not true.

Beauty standards lately have gotten ridiculous and chubby/fat people should be allowed to exist without a dick telling them to run on a treadmill and eat less. Let people be happy in their bodies— And if they are unhealthy, then promote healthy habits to them if they ask. Seeing a fat person happy shouldn’t hurt your fragile ego.

gender It's considered acceptable (at least in the US) to treat men domestically like the typical "poorly treated woman at work"

• Upvotes

And it's funny how specifically the same it is.

Whenever I make anything for a potluck, people assume my wife made it. Being a Stay at Home Dad feels generally isolating due to low numbers and difficulty integrating into moms groups, for reasons below. Overhearing moms groups talking about how terrible men are, even in front of other men. Overhearing another moms group rating the firefighters. My wife actively talking about how attractive male actors are (does NOT work both ways). General assumption of incompetence with domestic tasks. "You trained him well" 🤮. It's honestly wild how the assumptions of incompetence, the objectification, the social isolation from the "girls club", even down to the transference of credit, they mirror each other so closely. And what really shocks me is just how casual it is.

I feel like it's a hot take title, but I don't think anyone who has been around it can deny what I've laid out is generally considered pretty acceptable, even if it hasn't been personally experienced.

Sometimes I wish all these relationship posts would give context on the looks and attractiveness of people when discussing relationship issues

We always see people give their gender and age. It’s an important detail that gives context. People’s attractiveness also can help explain a loott of plot holes and things not adding up.

Attractiveness is a power balance as much as social status and money. I can’t give you honest advice of you’re vague or don’t include those details.

You always hear men or women complaining about being treated like shit for no reason. People ask them in the comments why they stay. Both genders reluctantly admit that their lazy and avoidant SO has a huge power imbalance over them and can get away with being inconsiderate because they can.

Yeah we all wish the world was a less shallow place. But it is shallow. And if you want advice it’ll mostly come down to increasing your self worth and having self respect.

NUCLEAR hot take Dating sucks because most people of both genders suck

The dating gender war? Turns out both sides are right. Human beings are generally selfish, shallow, and lack empathy and/or communication skills. This, of course, makes most people a pain in the ass to deal with romantically. Looks like younger generations are realizing this, seeing as so many of them have simply just stopped dating

People dismissing holidays as "made up"

Every time certain holidays come up, someone inevitably says “That’s just a made-up holiday” like they’ve uncovered some massive conspiracy.

They’re all made up. People picked dates and started observing them. Did you think the established ones were discovered in the wild? That some explorer stumbled across Valentine's Day growing behind a waterfall?

You can dislike a holiday or think it’s commercialized, pointless, or an excuse to sell greeting cards. But “somebody made it up” applies to all of them.

Yet somehow the holidays someone grew up celebrating get grandfathered into being legit. Those are traditions.

You don’t have to celebrate a holiday or even have to understand why someone else enjoys it. But people finding an excuse to celebrate something is hardly a scandal. And unless yours came engraved on a rock from space, we’re all working with the same basic system here.

lukewarm take Language is the most powerful thing in the world and most people just parrot what they hear from people they trust or admire and do not really know what they are talking about

Whoever controls your language controls what you know, how you see and describe the world, what framework you can think in, which words are associated with good things and bad things, which words are forbidden, which words you can say to gain brownie points or to piss someone off, etc you get the picture. Words can be used to elevate status of an individual or group or do the opposite, King and Barbarian for example. I don’t think most people especially on social media even know what they are saying anymore, they just type buzzwords and parrot what other people and influencers said over and over and are essentially mouthpieces who do not make their own arguments or seemingly think or budge at all. We could all get along if people got into details when arguing or discussing instead of pasting recycled ragebait and derailing the convo which seems to happen on almost every post, maybe that’s ai tho lol. Also, language is being used to make ai that can somehow solve a millennium problem, which gives it even more power if power scaling.

gender Gym attire has always been a bit provocative

Women’s gym attire over the past 10 years or so have been criticized for being a bit too revealing at times. The padded shorts, tight leggings, and now the low rise sweatpants at times. Now of course throughout history women’s attire has been a topic rather they wearing long dresses or booty shorts, but we will stay within the gym context.

If you look at gym attire from both men and women historically it’s always been a bit revealing. Back then especially the 70s and 80s for sure. I mean Arnold could’ve launch a OF if he wanted too. And it make sense why gym fits can be this way, because your body heats up quickly so having less layers can help. Also being fit or athletic can make body parts more attractive which can make the outfit more appealing.

Are women dressing like “whores” in the gym, ehh idk. I mean i see a lot of old dudes wear 3inch silky shorts with no underwear underneath. Like ball sweat just all over the place. I see some women wear low rise sweatpants and you can see if they shaved or not. So i get some people definitely getting a bit too comfortable. Overall though i think gym attire is fine.

To add i think some dudes are attracted to these women and maybe are upset that they aren’t dating them so they going home and watching instagram or even porn getting more upset about it.

serious hot take Science has become toxic

I can't really explain the situation in full because it is too complicated, but briefly, I have a master's degree in physics and I have been a hobbyist in the subject ever since I graduated while I worked in IT. Usually it was in the evenings but sometimes I would be reading some physics in my lunch break. Sometimes it was when I didn't have a lot going on that day. Anyway, the point is, I managed to find time for this and although I didn't spend a few extra years doing a PhD, I have spent 15 years studying it in my spare time and working on my own research project.

And I think I have some good ideas. I'm not a crackpot, I had a core knowledge of the subject from university and I greatly expanded this in the years since and worked out some of my own ideas. Yes, it's unusual, but there are 8 billion people on planet; you do get some strange people doing interesting things.

Well, in my naivety, I thought I was going to find people legitimately interested in my ideas. Instead I found a bunch of apes jumping up and down, throwing shit.

On most subreddits and forums you are banned immediately for even mentioning a personal theory. I was perma-banned for "spam" from Physics Forums, within 5 minutes of first posting, just for mentioning I had a theory.

It is no exaggeration to say that multiple times now, people on physics subreddits actually have tried to bully me when I started a thead asking for advice, or to vent about the difficult process. Most of the comments were contained insults and some people actually showed a desire to humiliate; many comments falsely accused me of generating a paper with AI, even though there was no basis for this claim at all; in fact it is the most un-AI-like physics paper you could imagine.

All of this and they didn't even know the title or the abstract of my paper, let alone the content.

They would say that I'm the delusional one. I would say that they are delusional for vastly overestimating themselves relative to me. It is like they think their PhD sheepskin makes them superior mortals.

I seem to remember the days when scientists were really nice people. What has happened? The people who were going after me, come across like insecure incels. Even if I was a crackpot, what harm was I doing? Nobody is going to be harmed by a quantum mechanics interpretation or a proto-quantum-gravity theory. The fact that the reaction was so out of proportion, suggests that it struck a nerve and this was really an ego thing with them.

This all makes me sad, because this project was a private quest of mine for 15 years, which occupied so much of my time. And the thanks I get is vile abuse, credentialism, and actual attempts to belittle and bully. I've got to believe that eventually I will meet some people who at least hear what I have to say. But there are just so many really nasty, insecure, power-hungry, egocentric, delusional, self-serving people out there, and from what I'm seeing, scientists are some of the worst ones for it.

Hot take: Its easier to read manual clocks than electronic ones

It’s weird cuz you’d think digital clocks would be easier since they literally tell you the time, but something about seeing the hands move around the clock helps me understand it better. I can visualize how much time has passed or how much time I have left before something happens. With a digital clock, it’s just numbers, and for some reason my brain doesn’t process it as naturally. Huh.

People who bring their dogs into stores are rude and selfish

Edit to better articulate my statement:

Right off the bat, I'm not referring to service animals. Clearly there is an exception to be made to keep things accessible. But the responsibility of identifying who is and isn't a service dog shouldn't be on the patrons, and not clearly identifying working animals just goes to further exemplify the lack of responsibility in dog owners.

People have allergies, phobias, it's unhygienic, and inconvenient and cumbersome to those just trying to shop. Most pet owners don't train their dogs well enough to be in close proximity to that many people and or tight aisles. Adding an unnecessary burden on everyone else in the store is quite literally the definition of rude and selfish, I get that you think they're cute but unless it's a pet store specifically they need to stay home or in the car.

And I'm sure there will be comments saying "yeah but kids do all these things too!" And sure yeah they can be loud and in the way, but they're not pets. You can't leave a kid in a crate at home for a couple hours without getting protective services involved and it's also some gymnastics you'd have to do to conflate a kid to a pet.
