The Shane Gillis SNL monologue was funny.

The internet is erupting with the Shane Gillis monologue, criticizing him for saying "women dress like whores at the gym now." When you actually watch the stand-up monologue, it has a much different tone than what's being described. People pulled out this one little thing and are freaking out.

He also said "gyms are just full of the hottest gay guys you've ever seen" and referenced the gay guys looking at him. He also called himself fat multiple times. He also called himself "a gas station egg." He also joked about his receding hairline making him look like Hitler. He also said "I look like a lesbian" in regards to his figure & his Bud Light commercials. Nobody is coming for him about the weight jokes or the gay jokes or anything else. Only the joke about women in the gym.

People pulled out the word "whore." I'm curious to know what a better word or phrase would have been? Even saying "women's gym clothes are so small now" would have pissed these same people off.

People pulled out "artificial bait." He wasn't referring to the women - he was trying to describe the color of the clothing with a better word than just "neon." You can hear him trip over his words/pause trying to find a better & funnier descriptor on the spot.

People pulled out how he was talking about how short the shorts are. But ladies, come on... As a woman myself who works out regularly, the tiny spandex that barely cover your ass are NOT good workout attire. They ride up, they get shoved up in all the wrong places, they're uncomfortable to work out in, you're constantly having to pull them down... Wear whatever the hell you want to the gym. But let's be real here. Commenting on how tiny these shorts are & how far up people's asses they are is not insulting. It's a reasonable observation worth joking about. Workout clothes are supposed to be functional first and cute second.

People pulled out him saying "seriously don't look, they're filming. I'm definitely in the back of a lot of TikToks." But he said this after saying "you're not allowed to look." He was making a joke about not being a creep, but also how hard it is to not notice bright ass neon colors, and also making a self-deprecating joke about coming off as a creep.

He makes a joke later on about trying really hard to not look creepy or scary to a passing woman on a hike and trying to find some way to let her know she's safe.

People are saying that it's harmful because it's normalizing this language about women. But tbh, I think what's really harmful is a) to not be able to actually listen to what someone is saying, even jokingly, without throwing up your red flags at the first sign of discomfort, and b) to not be able to laugh about your own experiences.

Comedy is built on poking at everyday experiences. He's done way better performances than this, for sure, but it was funny.

EDIT TO ADD:

Woooooof okay, some of y'all are bringing some really negative energy toward each other in the comments.

My point was that Shane Gillis wasn't being offensive. Sure, people are going to disagree with me. That's why it's a hot take. That's perfectly okay (and kind of the point of the sub??). But going into the comment section to harass the women disagreeing with me is not okay.

Having a debate or a disagreement is one thing, but some of y'all are just being rude for the sake of being rude.

Having a different train of thought, a different perspective, or a different opinion, does not make someone less than you.

The people disagreeing with me are allowed to have their own thoughts and opinions, just like I am. Say what you wanna say, but goodness... Don't be nasty

Telling someone they're being dramatic and "must be on your period" because they spoke about assault is actually wild, you guys...

If you have been harassed in the comment section (I think you know by who...), I am so sorry. I am reporting as I see them.

UPDATE:

I'm definitely realizing there are more than two sides to this coin.

I'm still not personally offended by it, but I also may just be surrounded by more respectful men than most and have a different perspective on the whole thing.

It's interesting (and saddening) how this post seemed to have given "permission" to some folks to be nasty and talk down to women in a way that didn't even have anything to do with the topic in question. Which, I suppose, is a lot of the commenters entire points.

Y'all have officially reversed my hot take, or at least drawn me into the middle ground. I wasn't offended by the jokes he made, but I see now how he has created a "safe space" for negativity towards women.

Thank you all for your comments. I read as many as I could!

If it was funny, go call your mom a whore and see if she or anyone else is laughing.

Exactly. If your wife or girlfriend dresses up and shows a little cleavage, go ahead and say: "damn baby! You are dressed like a whore right now" I bet you a million dollars she doesn't laugh.

a little cleavage

He's talking specifically about the pants that are designed to give you a wedgie and show everybody your buttcrack lol. Why do you have to misrepresent it, nobody said anything about 'a little cleavage'

Go to any gym in Brooklyn and all you see is cameltoe, its gross. I don’t want to see dick prints or cameltoe in gyms. Let’s not even mention bare asscheeks touching shared equipment

I mean, you said it wasn't a big deal to say that to women and it was funny, so wouldn't she laugh?

I mean, I can't believe it's the year 2026 and we are still having these conversations. We've squashed so many derogatory and hateful terms since I've been alive (48M) and calling a woman a whore or slut isn't one of them? F'ing really!?

u/strangeloop414 12h ago

Agreed, I am around your age and the rise of aggressive slurs has escalated so much in the past ten years it's kind of shocking and disgusting. Fascism sadly does that :(

4

u/BetterGoogleit17 11h ago

Yeah totally. We damn well know EXACTLY why these people came out of the woodwork, and why they got sudden bravery to say shit like this.

7

u/strangeloop414 11h ago

As my dad used to say, people are getting way too comfortable talking like this on the internet, but they'd never say it on the street. I think our need for politeness is crushing everyone. We used to stomp nazis !

For sure. I kindof wish we could go back to pre-internet days sometimes. On the other hand, there have been some amazing technological advances due to the internet, so I guess we have to take the good with the bad. I imagine AI will shape up to be the same way eventually. People already don't know how to talk to each other properly anymore because of the internet. Can you imagine if people don't have to talk to each other at all because of AI? They just talk to the machine. The future is going to be weird.

u/strangeloop414 11h ago

It really is weird, I completely agree!

u/BBudweiser 11h ago

You believing that we live in a fascist society while we are actively living in a democracy is part of the problem. Please go read a history book

5

u/strangeloop414 11h ago

Weird, my undergrad degree is a double major- one of which is in modern european history and my capstone was on the rise of fascism in europe and the psychology of it.

-4

u/OnlyACsNoFans 10h ago

Undergraduate degree 😂

6

u/strangeloop414 10h ago

Yea, sorry i went to medical school after- total waste of time.

1

u/OnlyACsNoFans 10h ago

Doesn't make you an expert on fascists doctor

1

u/strangeloop414 10h ago

If you believe everyone has to have an advanced college degree to comment on a subject they are well informed about, you're an elitist and also probably unbearable IRL. ETA: you probably tell people your IQ score and say you are in mensa.

This is like that scene in the Lord of the Rings where the good guys are just minding their own business, chilling around that well. Then a cave troll barges in, dragging his knuckles and drooling everywhere. The cave troll thought he was big and tough, and even managed to stab Frodo. What the troll didn't realize is that the good guys are so much more clever, and Frodo was wearing Mythril armor, and the cave troll just ends up dying in the end, without contributing anything meaningful to the story except for being a big, stupid adversary just asking to get defeated.

1

u/BBudweiser 11h ago

Looks like meat back on the menu boys!! Did you seriously write a monologue over getting called a femcel… relax lol please go get socialized for everyone’s sake

0

u/so_sic_of_it 11h ago

They get shunned most everywhere else.

2

u/auntiesamautism 11h ago

Ah yes, a guy making a generalization during a comedy routine vs. just calling a specific person a whore to their face. What a good faith response.

9

u/strangeloop414 11h ago

Well, if he thought it was funny on stage, why would it not be funny to his mom as well? or was it not funny and he just wants to call women that when it's not personal to HIM?

-1

u/auntiesamautism 11h ago

So if George Carlin thinks it’s funny to call people motherfuckers on stage, why would it not he funny to his mom as well? Almost like a comedy stage and rest of your daily life are different.

5

u/strangeloop414 10h ago

Motherfucker isn't a direct known slur people avoid- false equivalency.

-2

u/auntiesamautism 10h ago

Nothing you said earlier implied this was specifically over slurs. Way to shift the goalposts.

-2

u/Suitable_Spray 11h ago

A lot of people's moms think those girls in the gym are whores too, I don't think this comparison is gonna go where you want it to go

5

u/strangeloop414 10h ago

OK, they should say it to their whore shaming mothers and see how it feels?

-2

u/Suitable_Spray 10h ago

They'd probably laugh lmao, like what, think for yourself not other people

4

u/colamonkey356 11h ago

If it was funny during a comedy routine shown to millions, why wouldn’t it be funny to say to a person’s face? 😭

1

u/auntiesamautism 11h ago

Because a comedy routine and day to day personal life are different? If you enjoy playing Call of Duty does that also mean you’d enjoy being in a real war?

2

u/colamonkey356 11h ago

So why make jokes that aren’t funny in your day to day life if the point of jokes is for them to be funny?

3

u/auntiesamautism 10h ago

Unreal that who I’m presuming is a grown adult needs to be taught the concept of “context.”

6

u/colamonkey356 10h ago

I guess. I still didn’t find it funny and it seems like the vast majority of the comments agree with that so….sounds like this Shane guy is a bad comedian. If he’s your cup of tea, then why do you care how I feel?

3

u/auntiesamautism 10h ago

Way to shift the goalposts. Because strangeloop said an incredibly stupid, bad faith argument, and you tried to defend it.

4

u/colamonkey356 10h ago

I don’t think calling women whores is good faith either so, I guess we’re both unhappy. I’ll call it the truce of unhappiness!

2

u/auntiesamautism 10h ago

Just wondering, what comedians do you like? I’ll bet I could find examples of them saying some not so nice things in their standup. Almost like the majority of the population knows comedians tend to say irreverent things in their standup and you’re not supposed to take it too seriously because it’s a joke. But since the joke personally offended you know it’s a problem.

You really don't understand human interactions, do you?

4

u/colamonkey356 11h ago

I do, it’s just silly to me. If jokes are supposed to be funny, what’s the point of making jokes you can’t actually repeat to someone’s face?

That’s why I don’t like edgy humor. It’s just…not funny to me. “har har you whore because you wore crop top haha i so funny” like….there’s just no appeal to me.

1

u/OnlyACsNoFans 11h ago

You really don't. It's obvious from your comments

4

u/colamonkey356 10h ago

Okay? Oh no, a reddit stranger has accused me of not understanding human interactions. My day is now ruined and the sky is falling!

-1

u/so_sic_of_it 11h ago

"Context is unimportant in comedy."

☕️

5

u/strangeloop414 11h ago

But is it funny? Would it be funny if he made those jokes in the gym to women's faces, as a comedian? People talk to one another in the gym all the time, and are able to be funny. But would he do that? no.

-1

u/so_sic_of_it 11h ago

It would be fucking hilarious if he did.

The struck dog yelps.

0

u/Buttcrush1 6h ago

This is what those of us with brains call a false equivalency. It's a logical fallacy used by those who are incapable of properly addressing/creating an argument.

2

u/strangeloop414 6h ago

Ok so go do a comedy set and say that and have your mom in the audience.

0

u/Responsible_Pie8156 5h ago

I'm sure he would have no problem showing his mom his SNL monologue lol, she was definitely gonna see it at some point no matter what.

2

u/strangeloop414 5h ago

Sit down and show your mom.

-1

u/Responsible_Pie8156 5h ago

Um my point is Shane obviously would have no problem with telling that joke to his mom. He was on SNL, he knows she's definitely going to watch it. Also you don't know my mom lol she has very conservative views on how women should dress. She would literally agree that these women are dressing like whores and not in a joking matter at all.

2

u/strangeloop414 5h ago

And I was telling OP to tell his mom not Shane. If Shane’s mom is a pick me woman hater that’s not my problem but op should feel comfortable saying it with their whole chest if they’re defending it as not a big deal.

-1

u/yourfavoriteblackguy 10h ago

The Chris Rock special was funny, but you go call a black guy a n*gger. This isn't the gotcha that you think it is.

2

u/strangeloop414 10h ago

I mean, I am half black, so I don't know if this is having the impact you thought it would.
