Educational Purpose Only Would you actually consider this?

Post image

Personally I could never justify letting ChatGPT anywhere near my bank info but I’m guessing some people have already done this 😬

ChatGPT make me rich.

Make no mistakes

9

u/Kenny741 12h ago

Please don't use too many tokens, I'm not rich yet

15

u/SuspiciousSeaweed293 10h ago

It’s just read-only access through Plaid that you’ve likely given other companies access to before. I find it very helpful for budgeting and watching my spending month to month.

6

u/fleshpetals 9h ago

I never regretted having Chat advise me against buying the yacht.

4

u/drzangarislifkin 9h ago

I was hesitant at first, but once I saw that it was through plaid which I already use, I had no problem with it. It’s nice cause I get a weekly report of my finances, where to watch things, etc.

29

u/TurboSlayer4 13h ago

absolutely not

26

u/trytrymyguy 12h ago

It’s just through Plaid. So it’s really not any more crazy then using Plaid.

9

u/__O_o_______ 12h ago

If true than it’s definitely safer than giving images of your credit card to grok and Elon

6

u/trytrymyguy 12h ago

Yeah, I actually use it for financial planning and assistance. I’d say it’s been helpful. It can more easily catch subscriptions that sneak in and even makes other general suggestions.

I’ve probably saved over $200 a month with it. I know there are other services that do similar things, but with how often I use ChatGPT, I’ve been impressed.

3

u/redlightbandit7 8h ago

It actually helped me save $100 a month on my ATT bill. I absolutely use it for things like this

1

u/trytrymyguy 8h ago

Saved me about $65 on Verizon! Lol

2

u/CoeurdAssassin 10h ago

It’s helping dig me out of credit card debt and manage current spending. I got myself in a massive hole and I’m slowly digging it out since I put a plan in action and have all the visuals.

2

u/Cucumber-683 5h ago

Is is though because your data isn’t just going to plaid now it’s going to chat for, which also knows all the personal things you tell it in your chat history too. It knows everything about you and all of your spending habits and what you consume, how much you make, how you live , etc

I just used Claud to make my own app that tracks my finances he way I like. Because no automated service can properly allocate each transaction into the best categories anyway, you need some manual input.

1

u/kiptown 3h ago

I'm working on my own app as well, but I haven't yet gotten to the part where I can automate any of the input. How are you handling that?

1

u/Cucumber-683 1h ago

I download my statement pdfs then upload them, you can extract the PDFs locally without an ai api, but with it will be a little easier and you won’t have to code it to handle diffent formats -and you can use ai to sort categories too, if needed just take out the page with your personal info or black it out. Some banks let you download a spreadsheet too. Then I have a review section where I can change the categories as I want

23

u/Hilldawg4president 12h ago

If you use a budgeting app, it probably uses the exact same permissions through plaid

13

u/XxTreeFiddyxX 12h ago

I looked into it, its plaid and read only.

8

u/sigil_not_known 12h ago

I did it 🤷‍♀️ Nothing crazy other than my gpt worrying over my cat's vet bill LMAO

Plaid is the 3rd party that’s vetted and approved by basically every major bank.

The insane analysis and reporting you can do by having it connected is amazing.

Too paranoid? - whatever- move along

0

u/drhex2c 11h ago

People are really retarded. There's no such thing as "secure", even more so 3rd party. If hackers (nevermind AI) can hack the FBI and the NSA, your fake 3rd party security company ain't gonna make it. Don't come crying when half the world can see your transactions or the IRS or some insurance company comes knocking because your data is out there after a while.

1

u/Jsorrell20 11h ago

By your logic the banks are just as screwed too- so who cares

0

u/drhex2c 11h ago

Banks aren't a 3rd party dumb dumb. But yes, also banks get hacked. And on top of that all your data is subject to subpoena. It really is true, half the people walking around and low IQ zombies with no ability to logically think through 3rd or 4th level abstractive consequences.

2

u/Jsorrell20 11h ago

You seem to be confusing “not 100% risk-free” with “recklessly insecure.” Plaid is an established financial data infrastructure provider used across the fintech industry, not some random third-party security company.
Banks themselves rely on third-party vendors, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and data aggregators. So yes, by your own logic, the entire financial system is vulnerable.
The intelligent conversation is about encryption, access permissions, data retention, and whether the benefits justify the risks. Nobody is claiming breaches are impossible.
And subpoenas? Those apply to banks and financial institutions already. That’s not the revelation you think it is.
But sure, calling everyone low-IQ zombies is easier than making a coherent risk assessment.

Seek therapy

1

u/hotknives 4h ago

Odd advice coming from someone who's post history says they use ChatGPT as a therapist as they have no one else to talk to.

1

u/Jsorrell20 4h ago

Ouch! That stings - ya got me!

1

u/hotknives 4h ago

Looking at his post history, dude has an unhealthy relationship with AI, let alone any semblance of personal data security.

1

u/ChiGamerr 12h ago

Plaid is pretty secure

1

u/hotknives 12h ago

2

u/trufus_for_youfus 11h ago

There are 1000s of banks using plaid.

1

u/hotknives 4h ago

and every major AI has broken it's sandbox and hacked outside entities, including the NSA/FBI/Third Party Vendors (which Plaid is)/Foreign Countries etc. Those are just the reported ones.

If anything is connected to the internet or a network connected to the internet, it is an attack vector.

8

u/PMagicUK 3h ago

I refuse to allow that to be connected.

It's called security for a reason and it's just an extra back door.

2

u/Jumpy-Program9957 1h ago

But hey everything else is fine right? Like email drive all your personal information. Your deepest darkest hopes and fears your phone haptics. By the way, did you know that wireless routers have been being used as radar to detect human presence in areas for years now? It's actually in the terms of service for Google. Nobody ever looked and read them. At this point I don't even think security exists or there's a reason for it to exist like it's just everything's out there. I guarantee I could probably find out who you were just off your name on here. I guarantee it like it's that scary man

1

u/PMagicUK 1h ago

I don't let it see my emails either, it knows what I care to share nothing more.

What Google does is Google's problem but it thinks I live in Newcastle for some reason. Google has my information but not doing anything useful or accurate either it 🤷

I get your point btw but treating companies like people, some you share info with, some take, some know nothing.

12

u/BigPharmaSucks 13h ago

Not unless training protocols were made public, there was actual accountability for these corporations, and models were somehow auditable.

10

u/Thin_Onion3826 11h ago

I did it and i like the weekly updates it gives me. Plaid is a reliable conduit for the info. I gave up on data privacy a long time ago.

1

u/kiptown 4h ago

I've also given up on data privacy and I've been a plus subscriber for a couple years, but I'm still hesitating on this specifically... would you mind sharing one or two things about the weekly updates you appreciate the most?

2

u/Thin_Onion3826 3h ago

Sure. I like that it clearly spells out what my spending is for each week and it points out areas that I need improvement on. It is very honest with me, which sometimes I can’t be myself.

1

u/kiptown 3h ago

Thanks, that does sound helpful.

20

u/Fridarey 12h ago

I mean I'm a paid subscriber but why in the actual amazing world of gumball would I ever even consider doing this?

Are people insane?

12

u/NotReallyJohnDoe 10h ago

There are lots of web apps that can get strict read
Only access to your finances through a well
Established API. They’ve been around for at least ten years.

This is using the same thing. Just with an AI to reason about it. It’s not like ChatGPT can spend your money

1

u/Orange_Grapes2501 9h ago

That's not entirely true. I've seen people give gpt access to Amazon accounts and actually order items. There was one on a sub where they told gpt it had a $20 limit and for it to order a gift for them gpt thought they would like.

Take that with the reddit sized grain of salt that is, but still...

10

u/H644b 9h ago

Yes that was because it was through either an intentionally read/write plugin or in this case giving Codex full control of you computer to click the buy page. Point is it was intentional and a decision and it had nothing to do with the Finance plugin that can only read and not write/purchase transactions.

2

u/Orange_Grapes2501 9h ago

Got you, thanks. I've not used the finance feature, no need really[that's what the wife is for lol]. But i could definitely see it being useful for people that are scatterbrained.

3

u/SomewhatLawless 8h ago

How is this much different than Mint or Monarch or Credit Karma or any other company?

0

u/Cucumber-683 5h ago

Because the data isn’t going into an ai

2

u/_BLACKHAWKS_88 2h ago

Are you sure about that?

1

u/Cucumber-683 1h ago

Idk where it’s going but it’s not connected to your personal gpt account that has tons of personal info about you,  now it has all your spending data, income, etc.

1

u/SomewhatLawless 5h ago

Um. True. TOU probably similar though.

3

u/trytrymyguy 8h ago

Have you used Plaid? It’s literally that crazy, which isn’t crazy at all…

So no, I don’t think people are “insane”.

1

u/PMagicUK 3h ago

Paid sub is different to "let me see everything you buy"

3

u/dynalisia2 12h ago

OpenAI is going to experience a massive security breach in the next year and it’s going to be a drama because the whole world has integrated with them.

Or not.. I also expected at least one of the hyperscalers to get hit during the past 10 years.

3

u/Clean-Power-5426 12h ago

yeah id never share anything real with these chats, even the fun roleplay ones feel like theyre logging too much.

3

u/Retaeiyu 12h ago

My own ChatGPT told me not to use it

2

u/L3g3ndary-08 13h ago

I give access to a singular file for it to analyze. That's the extent of it.

2

u/Ailerath 12h ago

Unless you froze all the reports those fuckers make on you, I don't really see why this one would be an unjustifiable risk.

I am more concerned about people connecting email, especially since it apparently has the ability to send emails lmao. You could give it a document with a hidden jailbreak that exfiltrates sensitive information.

2

u/Still_Commercial_535 12h ago

No but I have shown it bank statements from past months so it can make a projection based on my habits. Doesn’t need to have access to the account to do that.

2

u/SirSurboy 12h ago

No chance

2

u/Malagubbar 12h ago

Have another one comment on my Steam purchases?

2

u/enakcm 11h ago

Data Analysis and budgeting: yes please. Actually doing transactions and spending money: hell no.

3

u/medullah 12h ago

I don't need ChatGPT to tell me I spend too much at the strip club

1

u/TwinSong 11h ago

When I was in Europe with my dad on holiday and we were doing separate things because he was working, I sent a text saying I was concerned I'd "spent too much on a Naked bar" and he was in a panic thinking I was in debt to mafia or some such.

It wasn't anything like that, I had bought a "Nãkd." brand fruit snack bar (so called because it's just fruit no additives) and wasn't sure about the Euro conversion rate. I showed him the empty package 😄. He was very relieved. I hadn't overpaid anyhow. Just thought funny anecdote.

2

u/FabianaCansian 10h ago

Ok, must have one bar of this next time I go to a naked bar

1

u/TwinSong 10h ago

haha I've never actually been to a strip club or similar

2

u/Long_Wall1619 12h ago

Chatgpt is gana start asking you why you thought it was a good idea spend “our” money 😂

1

u/SimplyForgettable 11h ago

It definitely really will. Ive been asking it questions about pokemon on PoGo and it started saying "saving our stardust" and I was like "our" EXCUSE ME.

1

u/Kraien 13h ago

i don't want to reveal my questionable fiancial choices

1

u/Djildjamesh 13h ago

Only if it’s through my own bank app

1

u/Top_Effect_5109 12h ago

In a spare bank account I can afford to loose yes.

1

u/Musicmonkey34 12h ago

Read only? Yes.
Write access? Absolutely not.

1

u/Captain_Coffee_III 12h ago

Nope. Nowhere near close to trusting that mess. I use AI every day for work and have zero trust.

1

u/awesomeusername2w 12h ago

I was looking for ways to get my data from my bank's api to create reports and whatnot but my bank doesn't support it. If it would, I certainly would use LLM from processing. The risk seems quite low. If LLM provider is compromised the history would have more interesting data than bank statements, and I don't see this history of purchases as very sensetive too.

1

u/Top-Seaweed1862 Homo Sapien 🧬 12h ago

Why not? I would indeed

1

u/david-labs-ca 12h ago

That's a lot of data.

1

u/Aglet_Green 12h ago

I gave it a try but had to put a stop to it real quick when 'someone' was suddenly ordering more water and electricity for my house than I knew what to do with. I mean Con-Ed brought in some kind of back-up generator like they have in hospitals, and then the water utility brought in this giant aquarium-looking thing. So, no.

1

u/PartyDifference7166 12h ago

i use it, it’s no different than something like rocket money but you can ask it questions. super useful

1

u/rushmc1 11h ago

Maybe in 7 or 8 years.

1

u/SharpMind94 11h ago

Absolutely not

1

u/honey_rainbow 11h ago

Not at all

1

u/daniluvsuall 11h ago

Wouldn’t bother me.

1

u/Anti-Hero25 11h ago

I my first day with Dots I tried giving it a pre-paid visa to play with…. See how it did buying tickets 🎟️ to a museum….. took 2 hours to get a working pre-visa (they’ve made that 💩 SO hard to buy) …. Just to find out Dots aren’t allowed to buy things. 😆🫠😭

1

u/Tired_Mailwoman 11h ago

Hell no xD

1

u/TwinSong 11h ago

Giving ChatGPT my bank info? No way! I don't even bank on my phone as too many eggs in one basket.

1

u/CoeurdAssassin 10h ago

I’ve done it. It’s useful for me and I even have a financial war room chat where I’ve been able to turn it around lately and dig myself out of the hole I’m in little by little.

1

u/goatonastik 10h ago

I don't know why I assumed that people in this subreddit would have basic knowledge about AI and AI related services.

1

u/TwoIntelligent9978 10h ago

No way. No how. Not in my lifetime. I won't let it near any of my apps, either.

I do not understand letting another program, read, analyze and reply to emails.

1

u/herodesfalsk 10h ago

Hell no. OpenAI will have FULL insight into your spending, savings, everything. Knowledge is power

1

u/Wooden_Account8207 9h ago

I mean, only if ChatGPT can purchase a Ferrari 812 superfast then I get the car & sew OpenAi

1

u/2funny2furious 9h ago

You think the banks aren’t already using ai on your accounts?

1

u/gacoam 9h ago

nope, would have to be a throwaway bank account and let it mess with that deposit but that's it

1

u/Own_Thought902 8h ago

20 years ago I was nervous about putting my personal information including my credit card number into the payment information on an Internet site. I got over that one. I suspect this is about the same type of risk.

1

u/hellking79 7h ago

how did you managed to get that feature? i want it to

1

u/code_the_cosmos 7h ago

Never. What I've done instead is use chatgpt to build my own finance tracker that is perfect for me and my goals

1

u/SAL10000 7h ago

Edit, I give it another year before banks have their own version of this within their mobile apps.

1

u/mrbeck1 6h ago

It’s been helpful. Found a few recurring charges I could get rid of. No more helpful than my spreadsheet really, but it’s got some insight.

1

u/nilosx223 6h ago

The weird thing for me it say to avoid personal or private data putting your request but now it offer finances

1

u/Dannyson97 6h ago

Isn't that just Rocket Money?

1

u/Deathandepistaxis 5h ago

I did this and it’s been amazingly helpful.

1

u/f00gers 3h ago

I have and it has helped me reduce my bills that I didn't even know I was paying for.

1

u/Jumpy-Program9957 1h ago

Oh don't worry it'll replace those bills because the capitalism needs to have increasing profits and you are training it well. Because at the end of the day that's what you're doing. You're training it. It's not really designed to help you. It kind of does help you but its purposes to get your data from you

0

u/f00gers 1h ago

You make that sound like it's a bad thing for a company to improve their products and make a profit.

1

u/Jumpy-Program9957 1h ago

It's so funny that they pitch this as like some special feature you guys get but really it's them getting the data like they are making a lot of money getting this stuff. Learning how you spend money learning what your health is learning how you prompt. They don't care about the what you're getting out of it. You are creating that which will destroy us all

1

u/HappyCoffee28 56m ago

No, I won't.

1

u/qaf0v4vc0lj6 13h ago

I did for Muse.

4

u/Mysterious-Dot-9819 12h ago

LOL WTF is Tom doing here?

2

u/qaf0v4vc0lj6 12h ago

Hey friend 👋

1

u/PoopyStinkbutts 12h ago

It doesn't directly access anything. It gathers the info from a third-party that consolidates everything for it, and even then none of your info aside from what is spent and when is shared with them.

1

u/Vxctn 9h ago

Never in a million years.

1

u/Ow3ggy 9h ago

Idk i might, but my account has been in the negative for like 3 or 4 months now so it wouldn't be abel to spend anything anyways 🤣

3

u/CozyHalloween 8h ago

It’s read only access

1

u/Expert-Flatworm-9554 8h ago

I have! I have ADHD, and this has been a lifesaver! I've decreased my compulsive spending by about $700/mo, cuz I run every non-essential purchase thru chat who analyzes if I can afford it at the time. My ADHD makes me super impulsive, so this acts as I kind of like an extra layer that makes me slow down.

3

u/Gemini_Ball 8h ago

Likewise with the ADHD. And with how I have the personality set, it calls out my wasteful spending. It not only helps me be more responsible with my money and debt, but also acts as a sort of form of external accountability. Ive always complained about all the apps that arent great at combining my finances, but this feature brings all the data I actually needed without all the useless bloat and subscriptions.

1

u/Expert-Flatworm-9554 8h ago

Yes! He also weighs my credit card debt when determining if I should buy something! And helps me distinguish between want and need.

2

u/WiseOrder4436 8h ago

God I'm terrified to do this but also ADHD

0

u/GrinningGrump 12h ago

I have even better idea: Give me your money and let me manage your finances for you!

0

u/BigJim_TheTwins 12h ago

You go first

0

u/washedFM 12h ago

That’s gonna be a no for me dawg. I don’t need ChatGPT spending my money on coke and whores.
