New, what is it? Found this intricately wrapped bundle deliberately tied high up in a tree. Any idea what it could be?

EDIT: To clarify, I already opened it!
For a couple of weeks, I'd been noticing this strange object hanging from a tree in my apartment complex's gated courtyard. During our annual spring clean-up in mid-May, my neighbors and I got a ladder and brought it down.

It was an envelope inside a Ziploc bag, wrapped tightly in a LOT of string.
The paper was waterlogged and mostly disintegrated, but I could make out the year "2021" on what looked like an official letter or bill.

It hadn't just been tossed up there and gotten stuck. It was deliberately tied to a branch with a knot,
and was so high up that even a very tall person would have needed a proper ladder to put it there.

Has anyone come across anything like this before?
Is there some significance to wrapping and hanging something like this?
Am I missing a perfectly ordinary explanation?

In my experience it's usually either drugs or a geocache.
If you open it and a bunch of drugs fall out, it's not a geocache.

2.4k

u/Novel-Initiative-900 1d ago

If a fine powdery mist bursts out as you open it and it coats your face and lungs it's also, not a geocache

Isn’t this how Cocaine Bear started

104

u/postprandialrepose 21h ago

Not exactly. The bear had to be born first.

57

u/odmirthecrow 18h ago

You see Timmy, when a momma bear and a papa bear...

25

u/yoshis_satoshis 18h ago

Well, actually the bear’s mother had to be born before that.

Look at these guys skipping right over the emergence of Ursavus Elmensis from raccoon like ancestors

22

u/Virus4815162342 16h ago

Actually, before that, the Paleogene Period had to come to an end, starting the Neogene Period which brought with it the necessary environmental changes to facilitate the evolution of Ursavis Elmensis.

I have a drug house for neighbors. You described a drug pick-up-and-go.

22

u/Keboyd88 23h ago

I read this multiple times trying to figure out how you have enough neighbors doing drugs for you to find it profitable to sell to only them, and how that would even work. Like do you show up with a gift basket when someone new moves in, like "first one's on the house"?

And then it clicked and I realized I may be too tired to be on reddit.

So, I don't mean to be the nay sayer here but I vote for that package being the result of unmedicated (or poorly medicated) schizophrenia.

Geo caches tend to be better concealed or constructed, and drugs tend to not be left out in the open where a curious passer by might take them down from the tree.

342

u/rumdumpstr 17h ago

So much "weird" stuff that makes absolutely no sense to us makes perfect sense to the person who is off their meds and trying to prove the FBI is spying on them with magnets and ultrasonic waves.

118

u/Little_View_6659 17h ago

So back like eight years ago I was on vacation in Brussels with my daughter and some random man came up and gave us this card that was covered in teeny tiny writing with all kinds of confusing statements. We kept it and puzzled over it and it was a mystery. And this year I got Reddit, and saw these posts, and now I’m like “OHHH! Schizophrenia!” Yeah. We couldn’t figure it out lol.

If it's a cache, it doesn't meet the requirements to be a geocache. A geocache can't require special equipment (like a ladder) to access, or be in a dangerous place. Tied up high in a tree is not safe.

68

u/Haps73 1d ago

I agree it has potential, but wouldn’t someone setting a geocache with a difficulty rating that included a need for special equipment (ladder), use a container that wouldn’t water log the log book? Log your feelings.

23

u/jort93 1d ago

You'd hope they'd have a better container yeah

9

u/Emerje 1d ago

Why, what's wrong with a mildew coated shower curtain? 🤔 /s

17

u/totallynottoddoracop 1d ago

Likely not a geocache. Or at least not a hide by an experienced geocacher.

10

u/WaylonKeisterCloggin 1d ago

Geocaches like this usually aren't hidden like others. When it's this high up the difficulty of getting it is usually enough. They don't want to hide something that requires a tool to reach because people would be logging it as lost all the time and probably injuring themselves looking for it while standing on a ladder. When it's easily seen like this a catcher can just take out his extendo-pole with a hook on the end and get to business.

Source: father is addicted to geocaching and Ive been along for the ride plenty.

I'm still not sure it's a geocache but it does seem like it has moldy paper in a ziplock bag which is very cache like.

Surprised no one has said it but sometimes it can be some type of witchcraft ritual. I’ve seen some things like this, other times in a jar that’s candle waxed shut, on hiking trails where I live. They’ll put hair or some type of organic material or a picture of a person they want to “curse” along with like a dead frog with a smoked cigarette sewn into its mouth. Crazy stuff but some people really do it. I smashed one open with my hiking stick once and it had a whole family photo along with some other random stuff inside like dollar bills and sticks. Hopefully I released that family from whatever curse they were under.

59

Please walk away… it’s my stash of leprechauns that steal your SSN and commit minor amounts of identity fraud on unreturned library book fines.

If you have any reruns of Betty Crocker’s 3AM commercial “Bake Someone Happy” on a VHS from 1981, with the Taco Bell “BellBurger”…

…that plays right afterwards, they love that—you might be in luck if you already opened it.

I was not prepared for leprechauns committing petty identity fraud over library fines. The oddly specific VHS requirement makes this sound like the most unhinged side quest ever, and now I need to know if the BellBurger was real.

I asked my stuffy chihuahua that says “Yo quiero Taco Bell” about the BellBurger. He says, “Yo quiero, Taco Bell,” then falls strangely silent. It must mean something.

Thanks for getting it down. That's the kind of thing birds get tangled in.

People used to sent messages tied to balloons. Sometimes as experiments. Elementary schools would do it, too. Just to see how far it could travel. It may have been stuck up there for a while.
