Discussion / Question What is the definition of a remaster (Rm) vs remake (Rk) vs reboot (Rb) vs reimagining (Ri) compared to the original (OG) in gaming?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I find it interesting and not surprising how these terms are precieved very differently amongst gamers. I suppose knowone has put a clear defining line between them, although i think there are some obvious ways to tell, where as some not so obvious depending on the game.

Regardless, here is my defenition in an attempt to best tell them apart from their original (OG) is as follows;

A remaster is keeping the original game assests but ported to run in higher resolution and performance.

Example: (OG) The last of us 2013 - (Rm) The last of us remastered 2014

A remake is taking the original game but applying new assests which is typically on a new engine so it looks like a modern game.

Example: (OG) Demons souls 2009 - (Rk) Demons souls 2020

A reoot (Rb) slightly blurs the lines between a remake and a re imagining in various ways and has no streamlined defenition, but it essensially is a game continuing a legacy series as either a sequal, prequal or retelling of the original.

Example: (OG) God of war 2005 - (Rb) God of war 2018

A re-imagining is completely stripping the original concept down then retelling and presenting it in a new way. Most if not all is different, including lore, universe etc and is not connected to the OG.

Example: (OG)-Silent Hill 1999 - (Ri) Silent Hill Shattered Memories 2009

What are your thoughts? Im interested to start a discussion.

Discussion / Question Platformers

• Upvotes

I was wondering what the communities views are on platformer games. I, for one, don't enjoy them too much as I am quite sick of them; as good a game as Hollow Knight is, I think it has saturated the market with indie platformers. I understand that "Indie" means that it is their first game and don't usually have massive funds behind them as well. I like survival crafting and sandbox games like Subnautica, Satisfactory, No Man's Sky, Ark, etc. (Just to show my taste in this argument).

Discussion / Question Games/franchises that I theoretically like everything about... except actually playing them

• Upvotes
  1. Pokémon

I love the world, characters, and creature designs of Pokemon. It's such a fun series to imagine fan works for; I would come up with a fake region with its own lore and characters and Pokémon in a heartbeat, because this franchise leaves so much up to the imagination and has infinite potential for stories based on the behaviors of Pokémon and how society and people's lives would be structured around them. It's a shame, then, that nearly every Pokemon game I've tried has bored me to death, be it SoulSilver, Platinum, X, etc. (I haven't tried any of the games past USUM, so take this with a grain of salt).

It's not even necessarily a turn-based combat problem, as I love games like OMORI, Yakuza: Like a Dragon/Infinite Wealth, Expedition 33, and the Persona series; it just feels like there is so much potential that these games aren't living up to, and the creative drive I have about it is a desire to make something more in-depth and engrossing out of it. Being a game for children doesn't mean the writing has to be boring, and I think it would benefit greatly from some modernizations in its UI and combat. The games I listed above manage to make turn-based combat feel really good, and putting aside the real-time elements of E33, it mostly comes down to snappy menus, few pace-breaking text boxes, and some amount of visual flair.

From what I've heard, aside from the technical flaws, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet actually do a pretty good job making the Paldea region and its residents into something rather interesting and engaging, so I might want to check those out at some point.

  1. Minecraft

This one is entirely a me problem, I think. In theory Minecraft should be my forever game, with endless creative freedom to build whatever you desire, not to mention the theoretically endless enjoyment of playing with friends. I love knowing about Minecraft, I love seeing others play it, but I have never really enjoyed playing it myself. I don't have an essay for this one.

Do y'all have any games like that?

Discussion / Question What are some GOOD examples of asset reuse?

Post image
• Upvotes

There’s a lot of stigma around recycling assets in gaming discourse, but sometimes it just makes for a more economical development cycle and ends up being a boon for a franchise.

Take Yakuza, for instance; nearly every game features the district of Kamurocho as a prominent location, and several of the games use the Sotenbori district as well. In the newer games, the Isezaki Ijincho and Honolulu maps were also reused between entries. While this kind of large-scale asset reuse could have made the games feel stale, the Yakuza series’ relatively strict continuity means that we grow up with these districts in a way through experiencing new challenges and meeting new people within them every time.

In Yakuza 0, Kamurocho is gaudy and trashy but incredibly alive and rich with ‘80s flair and nightlife; by Yakuza 6 though, the district has been largely gentrified, and you can feel the influence of the Tojo Clan waning because you have had seven games to experience every incremental change in the background of each game’s unique plot. Judgment shows us a completely different angle of the district, dropping us into a murder mystery with ties to the yakuza, the government, and the medical field; additionally, since Judgment follows a civilian detective/ex-lawyer, that game has a friend system that lets us get to know a lot of the locals of Kamurocho who would have no business in the large-scale yakuza conflicts of the other games.

Likewise, Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Lost Judgment use Ijincho for two entirely different gameplay styles and stories; LaD uses it as a turn-based RPG world where different parts of town have different threat levels, letting the map naturally open up as you level up, while Lost Judgment treats it as a huge playground for your new skateboard movement and using the different parts of the district as settings for the full-game-spanning School Stories side quest.

Do you know any other series that reuse assets to such a great effect?

Other Would this be a justified use of AI in video games?

Basically I’m working on a game just started but it uses Ai in a way to let you talk to characters with your microphone. basically just lets you talk to any NPC which it’s the only AI generated stuff. I’m just wondering if people would care if this is in my game. Not gonna be done for atleast 5 years depending on how ambitious I go it’s not my full time job I got other things to do so may take longer.

Discussion / Question What boss fights play nothing like the rest of their game?

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Could be a gimmick fight, could just be testing drastically different skills than anything else.

  1. Demon of Hatred (Sekiro) - I found this to be the hardest fight in the game; coming at the tail end of the adventure, in which you’ve been conditioned to deflect and turn enemies’ attacks against them with only the occasional dodge requirement to evade grab attacks, the Demon of Hatred comes completely out of left field as a pure positioning-based duel.

You’re still encouraged to stick very close and stay aggressive as per usual in Sekiro, as a lot of his attacks will entirely miss if you’re not in mid-range, but this fight is still an enormous adjustment. It almost feels like a Dark Souls III or Elden Ring boss dropped into the wrong game, but it’s still an engaging challenge and an excellent final test of Wolf’s sheer mobility with his infinite stamina, sprinting, and grappling to close distance.

  1. Nyleth (Hollow Knight: Silksong) - As one of the final bosses you’ll likely fight before the end of the game, Nyleth fits among the other Old Hearts as a final test of one of your core skills: Skarrsinger Karmelita pushes your ability to read and react to one complicated and punishing opponent to the absolute limit, Crust King Khann and the Karak army serve as the ultimate regular enemy gauntlet, and Nyleth tests your aerial dexterity in a way no other boss does.

Partway through the fight she destroys the floor, forcing you to cling to the wall opposite to her, use your Clawline to close distance and retreat, and utilize your double jump, float, and needle pogo abilities to keep the pressure on her. She’s kind of overshadowed due to coming immediately after Shrine Guardian Seth, one of the best pure 1v1 duels in the game, but she’s a very fun and unique boss in her own right. No other boss asks you to stay in the air for nearly the entire encounter, making this fight a weirdly excellent platforming challenge.

Discussion / Question why dont any of my friend groups want to play competitive games with me anymore?

As the title says... im confused, i had a group i played with for months straight. Im a female in a male group, most groups im in im the only female not always true tho at times. I am not the best of the best but i do try my best in comp games. Every group i have played with, it seems like for some reason after they play with me they dont want to anymore like i dont "meet" expectations. I took a friend in, she stayed with me for an entire month, i fed her, took her in when she was in an abusive relationship, drove her to the airport and made sure she was safe. Even then when i was even a higher rank than her or equivalent she only wanted to play quickplays with me. It hurt because im not good enough for a video game for her sake. I even gave her money from time to time for bp's and in game items and what not, i even share my steam library with her since i have a lot of games. Today she told me she only plays with select friends for comp. This kinda hurt me bc i dont think im awful at the game and i always try to put time in considering theres a time difference and its not like im asking every day. Other friend groups just ignore me like i murder someone. Im just annoyed.

Other friend groups say i dont meet the standards they want for competitive gaming and i have to play well every single game or i cant play with them. I even suffer with 60+ ping on servers to play with them. I either get shit talked or made fun of a lot for have x amount of hours on a game but bc i dont play well a game or 2 im not good enough. Im just tired of not meet expectations of others all the time online, in person i couldnt care less but online it seems like im never ever enough. I know its the internet and to grow a pair but to constantly never meet anyones expectations online especially as a female is tiring, Im tired of people saying that im never good enough like im in a god damn relationship or something and expect me to do the upmost best.

Discussion / Question People who consider Elden Ring to be one of the greatest games of all time, why?

I don't think it's bad or anything, but I also wouldn't put it in the "greatest of all time" discussion. I always get a bit surprised when people say it's that good, or that it's the best game of the decade or something. What are they seeing that I'm not?

Discussion / Question I’ve played everything (I think)

So I’m/was a big gamer and just started getting back into playing on my ps5. I bought ufc 6, eafc 27, cod but honestly man it doesn’t hit the same.

I miss playing with genuine enjoyment rather than raging at the game. I’m a big fan of games like sleeping dogs, yakuza, 7 days to die, mafia, xenoverse etc… but i feel like those types of games are dying out and only the sort of mainstream/sport ones are popping or getting any decent marketing. (Except superhero games but I never like to play them)

Please give me any suggestions and i’ll look into them immediately.

Anyone ever searching for some item while playing a game and then when you see that item in real life and are momentarily inclined to pick it up? Is there a name for that. Playing The Long Dark right now and I keep thinking about picking up sticks to make a fire later.

Discussion / Question Gear of War E-DAY is a good but frictionless videogame that fails at some of its core objectives

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi, I just finished the game and I had a good time playing it, i liked it, but it wasn't the big return to form I expected, nor the one they themselves promised. Little disclairmer: I like all the Gears games, even 5 and Judgment.

In GOW1, everything felt darker and harder. Each Locust was a huge obstacle. They were scary mofos, and fights were tense and unforgiving. This was due to the amount of damage they dealt, how hard they were to kill, the restrictive level design (while still giving you some room to maneuver) and, to be honest, the occasional clunkiness of the controls and early UE3 engine. This hardcore feeling was gradually watered down over the course of the series, with the transition from GOW2 to GOW3 probably being the biggest shift. I like all of them, but I've always missed GOW1's smaller scope and tougher enemies.

Apparently, The Coalition thought the same, since during E-DAY's announcement, they talked about wanting to bring back that sense of fear, both in the world and in its enemies. They discussed it in this interview, they gave emphasis to the importance of bringing back that GOW1 feeling.

They described the Locust as the "monsters under the bed". They even specifically talked about making the Drone "fearsome, physically intimidating, and utterly brutal", adding that "getting the drone right was crucial; everything else with the Locust we're scaling up from there."

The extremely nostalgic and sad Mad World trailer, which they referenced in the E-DAY reveal, was also discussed in the article. They wanted to use it as a foundation for the overall tone of E-DAY:

"The original Mad World commercial resonates because it portrayed a heroism rooted in vulnerability, not invincibility. We wanted to explore all the elements that made that ad memorable and impactful."

Using the Mad World trailer as a sort of foundation for the series is a decision i aplaud, this is how they put it, "Our goal was to explore and reinvigorate the foundational ideas of the series."

So I was really hyped. I really vibed with what they were doing with E-DAY. I loved the idea of making the Locust scarier and bringing back the sad, dark atmosphere of the first game.

But apparently, they only meant it from a narrative perspective???? Regular Locust Drones in E-DAY are extremely weak. I think they're the easiest to deal with in the entire series, and the gameplay overall feels more forgiving, more freeform and more frictionless than in any other Gears game. It feels like the game wants to tell a gritty, sad and dark story about tragedy and brotherhood, but the gameplay doesn't convey those same ideas in the slightest.

This comes down to a whole bunch of factors:

  • The maps are HUGE. None of them feel claustrophobic, and they make it extremely easy to keep your distance from enemies. You can almost always flank them, and the levels generally feel designed to make encounters easier, comfier and "accesible" rather than put you in a tight spot. This really takes away from the oppressive presence of the enemies and the tension of the encounters.
  • There is almot no decisionmaking in your loadout, E-DAY follows a "play however you want 👍" philosophy that I'm not a huge fan of. Let me explain: in older Gears games, you had to work with whatever the map and the enemies gave you. If you wanted to use weapons like the sniper rifle or explosives like the Boomshot or Torquebow your opportunities were limited by what you could find. In E-DAY, you can basically use whatever weapon you want whenever you want. There's no friction, no meaningful limitations on what you can use, and this makes fights feel underdesigned and bland. There are no encounters that feel like the developers designed them around specific weapons or strategies. Everything is designed to be completed with whatever loadout you choose.
  • Buildcrafting and active abilities trivialize a lot of situations and take away from the risk-reward aspect of surrounding enemies and putting yourself in a difficult position. Some builds are severely overpowered and strip away much of the tension from fights.
  • The co-op mechanics are a joke. For a game so focused on your teammates, your bros, cooperation and the idea of being overwhelmed by insane reptilian mofos, you barely need to interact with your squadmates at all. You never need to revive them or save them when they're in trouble. They'll ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS save you when you're in a bad spot when dealing with those awfully designed enemies that pin you to the ground. E-DAY is a game without any friction, and that goes against the very message it's trying to convey.
  • The constant spam of collectibles and upgrade boxes scattered around the maps makes the game feel extremely videogamey, and not in a good way. It doesn't help that most of these upgrades are worthless while some of them are stupidly OP as previously mentioned. There's also an INSANE amount of resources everywhere: You can refill your ammo reserves at any weapon locker, but it feels like every single piece of cover needs to have two grenades, a weapon and two small ammo boxes nearby, it feels like they don't trust the player with managing their resources at all.
  • The game features a lot of semi-open-world content that really messes with the pacing. On top of that, encounters in these open-world sections are pretty underwhelming compared to those in the more linear parts of the game.

They wanted to create this gritty and desolate experience while at the same time creating the friendlist and most welcoming game in the series from a gameplay point.

I really liked the story they were going for, and I loved the main characters, Marcus, Dom, Mags and Reyes, as well as the recurring background characters. I think they did a good job of portraying the sheer insanity of the Locust invasion, even though I wish the game had more quiet moments. More Halo 3: ODST moments where you simply walk around an abandoned city, taking in the tragedy of the invasion.

The game is pretty fun, the game is solid and a good new release for the Xbox brand, and i feel most people are really enjoying the campaign but personally im a bit worried this is the basis for the next games.

Honestly, ODST captured the feeling of the Mad World trailer better than either Gears of War 1 or E-DAY ever did.

Discussion / Question Some of my gaming Hot Takes

  1. Half life and Half life 2 are overrated. I can’t understand how it is still relevant today. Don’t get me wrong I completely understand the cultural impact and that it was amazing for it’s time but now I don’t see anything about it that stands out, gun play is spongy the rag dolls are fun though, the physics engine again for its time is good but nowadays nothing unique. I like the graphics but overall the gameplay just feels bland
  2. Assassin’s Creed 2 isn’t the best in the series. First off the ending is awful, like the dumbest ending ever, and honestly the overarching story as a whole isnt all that to write home about, there is no emotional investment in ezios family, he mainly just doing random bs the whole time, but mainly the ending. The parkour is slow but not horrible, combat is clunky asf but AC isnt known for its combat
  3. MGS2>Snake Eater: this one is pretty biased I just enjoyed the story of Mgs2 more, but I do think that the reason people hate on 2 is because they didn’t play 1 which is important.
    1. I did not care for the Stanley parable
  4. Bloodborne isnt even top 3 souls, it’s good, but the main game bosses are genuinely awful only having 2 good bosses and one of the worst bosses in souls history (ROM) . The issue I have is that all the weapons are basically just a strength weapon and a dexterity weapon combined which results in essentially zero variety.
  5. Just because I don’t want to be completely negative I think that the metro Series is super underrated and deserves more love

Discussion / Question What currentgen hardware‐exclusives (released for single console, chiefly ⟮NS2 ⊻ XSeries[S|X] ⊻ PS5[base⩖Pro]⟯, not a pc architecture unless designed for ane particular modern OS meant for modestish components) come closest to pushing limits of the machine in an optimized fashion?

Iʼm guessing that several for Switch2 might come closest in this utilizational way since as a handheld the games designed for it rely on relatively more modest power thus working in a smaller walled garden (albeit presumably substantially larger than even NS1 of prior gen).

I am also curious of any games made for a modern mobile edition (current version of Android or iOS, or perhaps both) might be remarkably well-optimized respectively therefor (presumedly in a Game mode if also high-utilizing) and overall well-designed. And likewise if any made for one (or perhaps two or all) of x86‐64 Linux, Mac, Windows in a particularly optimized utilizational way, perhaps for a quasi- walled garden, that are also decent games overall.

What modern console-exclusive (9thGen) games, expressed in what ways, make most use its console? Is there any plan to port to another system (console or pc) or prospect of decent emulation in near future, or is it safe in this regard? Likewise for releases targetedly for pc and mobile OSs, respectively. Looking back three-plus gaming generations, or even.just one (e.g. PS4) decreases scope so tend to be easier to leverage more full6, but what about for still-manfuactured hardware?

Discussion / Question Would love recommendations for a new competitive game

As per other posts i've seen on here, i've been on the hunt for a new game. I'm very much the kind of person to grind one game and get pretty good at only that game.

I've been playing apex legends since release (masters rank if that matters), and honestly I still love it but I need something else to play when my squad mates can't get on. They are both new fathers and i'm a new homeowner, so schedules aren't as free as they have been the last few years. It unfortunately has jaded me quite a bit as the movement seems unbeatably smooth.

I also loved rocket league and grinding mechanics until a couple years ago but I went back to enjoying shooters more.

I'd say the driving force for video games has always been the competitive nature and it usually needs a ranked mode for me to keep interest. very much like the combination of skill plus ball knowledge.

I'm very simplistic with how I like games, in that I don't enjoy looting or doing crazy meta gun buildouts just to compete. I like a fairly flat playing field and seeing who the better competitor is.

With all that rambling done with, anyone got anything to recc?

Discussion / Question What are your favorite explosion effects in video games?

(So I actually made this post because I had a dream about making it, but I think it's an interesting IRL question anyway lol.)

The explosions in Starfox 64 are incredibly satisfying. The perfectly spherical shape and the huge wooshing sound make them so memorable. Shout-out to when you make the train crash into the factory in Macbeth, gotta be one of the coolest moments in the game.

You can see it about the 0:35 mark here.

I adore the explosion in Smash Bros 64. Not the visual, since it's pretty weak, but the sound effect is amazing. (I love the sounds in Smash 64 in general, they are so over-the-top, but this is about explosions.)

You can see it at about the 2:09 mark here.

The explosions in the first two OddWorld games are pretty good too. Very loud, but what really makes them memorable are the sparks(?) that fly everywhere.

You can see it at about the 25:01 mark here.

News / Trailers / Articles $6 Billion Esports Giant has stolen artwork from indie artists (and others) all over their socials and in their game

Thumbnail

Mobile Legends, the game that Riot sued a few times awhile back and has gone on to rank #2 on the Esports charts and was nominated for Esports at last year's Game Awards, has potentially modified stolen artwork from completely independent artists (and other companies, some large and some smaller indie studios) all over their Facebook and YouTube in posts ranging from 2016 to literally this year, as well as sold this art in their game in the past allegedly without ever notifying or paying the artists.

Other larger post showing comparisons of some of this art currently on their Facebook on their sub: r/MobileLegendsGame Post

The people on their sub basically said "we know and we don't care." I'm guessing a lot of these artists though don't currently know about this, especially since in a recent YT investigation into the game, one of the independent artists named “Zeronis” who was allegedly stolen from and had his art used to model a skin off of that was sold in the game said that he was never approached by the creators of the game, was never compensated for their use of his art, and never knew this had happened in the first place. The owners of the game definitely made money off selling this skin and others like it based on it appearing in old footage of the game in matches.

Video: Exposing Mobile Legends
(Section from 9:45 to 10:30)

Not to mention a lot of their trailers on their YouTube plagiarized other game trailers like Elden Ring, Castlevania, and LoL which made a controversy a year ago and those trailers were never taken down.

I'm not making this post to damage this game’s reputation or anything, I’m just posting this here to bring awareness to this and in case there's anything that can be done to help out at least the artists who have come forward saying they were stolen from.

Credit to Glad2be1000 on YT for his investigation and [u/MasterDevelopment481](u/MasterDevelopment481) for discovering the Valorant art.
