first went off at about 11:32pm (shook my whole building, which didn’t shake noticeably during that earthquake we had a while back). just heard a “woooo” and applause, and stopped seeing any flames at 12:20am. scary stuff. long time to be burning…

i didn’t smell it at all but i’m a couple blocks away. i feel awful for the people living right beside it.

nearly an hour of burning before it was fully put out is wild, big respect to the firefighters working in the middle of the night

I live about a block away, but I didn't hear or feel anything. I also didn't notice any sirens.
Around the same time, however, I did hear someone singing (?) loudly through loudspeakers with some music, but I thought it came from the Gastown side (didn't get up to investigate). Was this connected?

These gasoline cars will never take off if car companies can't figure out how to make them stop catching fire all the time

Impressive that the headlights are still on while fully engulfed.

Bizarre things happen when switches and relays start melting. I've seen cars with the engine fully on fire and nobody in or near them, cranking over continuously like they're trying to start. If they're manual transmission and were left in gear with no e-brake, they'll start moving on their own.

Cars don’t normally do that. Maybe someone left a propane tank in there. They tend to leak a little and when unlocking the car it may ignite from switch operation.

WorkSafe BC made a video on the incident in Langley where a work van went boom.

Cars can explode on its own if you keep them running for long.

It’s a new model. External combustion.

Technically external combustion engines (steam engines) predate internal combustion engines by a pretty big margin

I'm not sure it matters. I'm completely speculating here, no inside information: that looks deliberate. Ie. Like someone poured gas inside and lit a match.

It does matter because EV batteries burn way more than gas fires. A burning lithium battery in the middle of the city could burn for over a day and require much more water to contain.
