Can we get 500 birthday upvotes for Rusty?

I'm happy to announce it's Rusty's second birthday! I truly love the little guy, and we've been through a lot over the course of two years.
Although caring for him can be hard sometimes, we always get through it. As a teen, I've been able to cure him of edema (sadly an exotic vet wasn't available anywhere near us) and care for him well overall, which I'm glad I'm able to do. It's crazy I can just search him up and he'll pop up; he may very well be the most famous salamander on Reddit (search up "Rusty from r/salamanders" if you want to try for yourself. He's able to recognize me as an individual through scent and possibly through features, which is insane for his small brain capacity. He's getting a tank upgrade soon, and I'm looking forward to spending the next 20+ years with him.

Loved seeing huge swaths of these guys slither onto every forested trail come dark. Included last is the ginormous spring salamander, the 'trex' of its biota which is more than happy to scarf down any unfortunate jordani that stumbles onto its path

I was flipping rocks in a small stream and found this beautiful Adult Northern Spring Salamander that was around 6 inches long! I put the rock back exactly how I found it and the Spring Salamander went right back underneath the rock! (Ithaca NY)

Pigeon Mountain Salamander

Not a great picture but the few individuals that I found slipped back into their hidey holes quickly and I didn’t want to harass them. If you’re unfamiliar with this species, they occur only on a single side of one mountain in GA.

Little Guy Appeared in Plant! What does he need?

I hope the picture is okay, but basically I am at my parents house and I looked at vase my mom has full of pothos clippings (she left the vase outside all summer apparently and just now brought it in) and this little guy is crawling around inside!

He appears to have all his legs grown and is maybe an inch long? What is he/she? What food is needed? Does he/she need to be released into the wild asap? Can it still breathe underwater? We live in western PA, will it get too cold? Any help is welcome!

I need advice

So I very rarely post but I need advice right now. So I've been trying to get a salamand for the longest time and I've always wanted a tiger salamander but the problem is I live in Colorado and the Western tiger salamander is kind of protected and I need a special license to allow having a western tiger salamander so I've been trying to figure out workarounds and then I found the Eastern tiger salamander. Is it okay to have a Eastern tiger salamander and if so I would like advice on what I need to take proper care of my new friend or friends cuz I'm thinking about getting two

I am watching a friend’s dogs this week, but they also have a salamander. I haven’t been given any instructions on how to care for it. I don’t know a lot about salamanders, but this doesn’t seem like a good set up.

Any advice on what I should do?

Life long dream to find a salamander

Does anyone have any advice for finding salamanders? Ideally in Madison Wisconsin in particular. I don’t want to keep them or do anything to harm them just see one in the wild. It’s been a dream of mine.

I do own a house so perhaps the exterior of the basement window area in this current fall season. Other than that I suspect though they are here in the Madison area- they’re probably harder to come across than other places in the US

Figured I’d make one last post before it starts getting too cold to ship but I still have a good amount of Chinese firebelly and blue tailed firebelly juveniles available if anyone in the US is interested! Check out my MorphMarket link in my bio if so. Also up for some trades for other newt species I don’t have.

Artificially created natural habitat for wild salamanders

Hi all,

I don’t keep salamanders but I’ve been fortunate to see many tiger salamanders on my property. They get in my pool and I rescue them. Most years, I take them somewhere very close by with some mud with some water. Since I see them annually, I figure they are surviving.

This year, however, it is very dry and there is little water or mud nearby.

I could locate the salamander further away but my other thought was to create some outdoor habitat that is appropriate for them for drought survival. To be clear, this is on my property.

I‘ve done a smidge of reading. Seems like they want loamy, moist soil to bruminate in, presumably below the frost line. My soil isn’t very loamy so I’m not sure how they’ll manage to burrow in it. Seems like before they bruminate, they need a pool to moisten in with some hides.

I’ve thought about putting a very small plastic pond thing in the ground and possibly bury some pvc tubing or french drain pipe adjacent or connected. I’d need to moisten it regularly (drip irrigation would work and is available), I might need to circulate it (a little tougher). Very uncertain how I’d get tubing deep underground.

Any have thoughts or experience to share?

NB: if your comment is leave the wild animals alone, I have no choice as they are in my pool and can’t survive there. I’m trying to figure out a relo that isn’t immediate death.
