Iām a relatively new player, as I started around the time the Necromancy skill was released.
But from what Iāve seen, itās that⦠I love Runescape 3. I tried OSRS, but itās far too old-fashioned for me. RS3 strikes the right balance between adventure, sandbox gameplay and quality-of-life features.
I started playing because I spotted the game on Steam and thought, āWhy not?ā, out of sheer boredom. Iād never heard of it before (the game isnāt very popular in my country), so I didnāt know what to expect, and so on.
And now, looking back a few years, I reckon the biggest problem with RS3 isnāt so much its UI⦠(in many ways, RS3 is a lot like Kenshi, including the UI! :D), not the chaotic mess of dead mini-games and jumbled questsā¦
Itās just that Runescape 3 has a rubbish reputation.
But in lots of areas that no longer exist. In a change to the combat system from back when I was starting university and playing Skyrim⦠In microtransactions that havenāt been around for a year.
The game has improved significantly over the past year or so. The roadmap is great. The gameplay is great. In my view, itās one of the most exciting MMOs on the market (and Iāve played WoW, GW2 and ESO).
But the talk surrounding the game has never changed. Whether itās from the OSRS community, or within the RS3 community (not to be rude⦠but you lot are more of a pain than the WoW Classic community).
If you ask for advice on an MMO forum, people will recommend every mainstream MMO in the world ... except RS3.
And in my view, thatās what Jagex needs to change in order to attract new players. Through streamers and YouTubers, they need to change the reputation of RS3. YouTube is just a graveyard for RS3. Thereās not much on there. I play RS3, but I prefer watching WoW videos because theyāre more fun. Iām not even sure there are any lore videos⦠On this subreddit⦠there arenāt many fan art pieces. Where is the RP community? (It must exist somewhere, but Iāve no idea.) Is everything about RS3 just⦠dead? Iāve never seen a single advert for the game in my life. For OSRS, yes. But never for RS3. Given the algorithms, I should actually be the target audience...
As for āReignitedā, I think thatās what Jagex thought. I reckon they decided they needed to change the reputation, and to do that they had to start from scratch, with a clean slate. Iām not entirely sure thatās the best idea. I think another full year of restoration would have been better.
But Iām neither a businessman nor a game developer.
I donāt really have a conclusion, because I donāt have a simple solution (I canāt even draw!), but I wanted to share this.
