Isn’t it crazy how Gen Z was the first generation to invent slang

56

u/Excellent_Bend8782 3h ago

They do it the worst and are objectively less literate than all other generations so far.

18

u/onarainyafternoon 2h ago

This comment is so EPIC !!!

•

u/thederevolutions 17m ago

I think Aura farming is a pretty great slang term and relatively creative, in that .

17

u/parkinthepark 2h ago

When the boomers said it about us, they were WRONG.

When we say it about Gen Z we’re RIGHT

2

u/Excellent_Bend8782 2h ago

Unironically, yes.

6

u/DoesntMatterEh 1h ago

Signed - literally every generation about the one after theirs

•

u/HistoricalChef1963 21m ago

Listen, I don't know or care where Gen Z slang ranks on the all-time slang charts, but buddy is right that they are less literate than the generation they preceded.

-1

u/Jeggu2 3h ago

That's what the last generation before me said too. And likely the one before that. All the way to the stone age

21

u/Excellent_Bend8782 3h ago

No, that's actually legitimately not true. IQ scores and literacy were on a positive slope relative to their generation, until Gen z.

4

u/SquisherX 1h ago

This is true, but wildly misleading. Yes, GenZ have poorer literacy than Millennials, but Gen Z still have better literacy than Gen X and boomers

2

u/Excellent_Bend8782 1h ago

That doesn't invalidate what I said at all. There was a positive slope. Now there is not.

0

u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 1h ago

I’ll take that bet! I may be 52 years old, but I’ll guarantee you that I’m more capable of putting a proper sentence together than the vast majority of the Gen Z crowd.

•

u/SpartanJAH 44m ago

Well, considering that Gen Z is currently aged 14-29, I would hope that your literary skills are at least a good match for high schoolers at 52. You still have a little while before you enter the real cognitive decline.

•

u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 13m ago

Gee, thanks! I think…. lmfao

-10

u/Jeggu2 3h ago

The top theory among actual scientists are that the education system was changing which negatively impacted scores. Not to mention that online IQ tests are hardly an accurate measure of intelligence. I'd more readily believe that the systems in place have failed them in one way or another rather than somehow they all collectively made eachother dumber.

11

u/Excellent_Bend8782 3h ago

So literacy rate and intelligence don't matter? Or are you just going to brush that off.

-4

u/Jeggu2 3h ago

First part was about IQ (or intelligence as you put it). Second part was more directed toward literacy rates, I could have made that clearer, my bad

-6

u/RandumbStoner 3h ago

You don't have to say my bad because someone was too stupid to understand what you were saying lol it was pretty clear

2

u/HudsonValleyNY 2h ago

So you aren’t disputing that they are dumber just finding other gen’s to blame? It might have merit but it’s not quite the gotcha I think you’d hoped.

-5

u/NimJickles 2h ago

Okay Boomer.

-10

u/TheGeneral_Specific 3h ago

…why do you care so much?

9

u/Excellent_Bend8782 3h ago edited 3h ago

Because I care about humanity evolving and getting more intelligent than those that came before them, and Gen z is doing the opposite of that.

-9

u/Jacobs_Haus 3h ago

This is so backwards lmao you're literally acting like a boomer

8

u/Excellent_Bend8782 3h ago

How is it backwards?

-1

u/Jacobs_Haus 1h ago

You're black sheeping and estranging an entire generation for simply being children just like older generations have done to us. Yes it's true that children today aren't learning as well but that has nothing to do with the slang they use and the language they invent because we've literally all participated in doing that in some shape or form. Language has never been a static thing. It evolves all the time. You're projecting something deeper. There's literally no reason to be upset with new phrases or terms

•

u/Excellent_Bend8782 36m ago

So literacy and IQ haven't fallen with Gen z?

-12

u/TheGeneral_Specific 3h ago

So you’re starting a war against… checks notes …slang?

12

u/Excellent_Bend8782 3h ago edited 3h ago

You're not checking notes. And it's not a war, it's a very valid concern that the generations to come are legitimately less intelligent and less literate. It's a very real and serious problem. Or do you not care about the well-being of humanity as a whole? The degredation of language into Gen z coded tiktok talk is symptomatic of a much larger problem.

-6

u/TheGeneral_Specific 3h ago

yOu’Re NoT cHeCkInG nOtEs

Be so fr right now, you’re trolling right? This is all a troll?

7

u/Excellent_Bend8782 3h ago

No? I'm genuinely concerned about the future of the human race.

-3

u/longbongstrongdong 2h ago

You should be concerned about the future, but not because of Gen Z slang lol

7

Lol so because I care about language and the future I'm a bot? Right okay

-3

u/bunny_rabbit43 2h ago

“Lol” I thought you were against internet slang?

6

u/Excellent_Bend8782 2h ago

I never said I was. I said Gen z is degrading language and is worst at it. Gen z reading comprehension fails again.

-1

u/applesandotherthings 2h ago

Dude that’s literally your opinion. You’re acting like it took brains to come up with slang in the past. You’re an old prude

2

u/Excellent_Bend8782 2h ago

Please don't misgender me, "dude."

-2

u/bunny_rabbit43 2h ago

Maybe you should proofread your comments before criticizing reading comprehension.

0

u/Excellent_Bend8782 2h ago

Genuinely what the fuck are you talking about? You know that autocorrect and reading comprehension aren't the same thing, right babygirl?

-3

u/Effective-Culture-88 2h ago

First of all, I’m not Gen Z - well actually I was born in 1996 so that’s arguable, but let’s say I’m a late millennial.
Second of all, I’ll have you know that I scored a 95% at my Advanced English Literature class… as a French person.
I am, however, very much worried about your lack of awareness towards the massive bias you’re showing here.
Every generation have criticized every other generation of slang since the dawn of times, and obviously the new one always was the one « ruining it », and their generation was obviously « better ».
I mean if you don’t have the intellectual honesty to realize this, then perhaps you should refrain from trying to criticize people’s scholarly abilities.
Type shit
(I love Gen Z slang lol)

3

u/Secret_Fee1146 2h ago

I think they sound dumb as fuck

1

u/Effective-Culture-88 1h ago

Well there it is, an honest answer.

-8

u/Uncle_Touchy_Feely 3h ago

"My fake words were better than your fake words!"

2

u/Joke_of_a_Name 3h ago

The new generations have to make up new words to beat us in conversations to try stay competitive.

13

u/Far_Psychology3522 3h ago

Don't be good at stuff and do it in public or you are aura farming I guess.

6

u/Careful-Positive-710 3h ago

Dude it's just slang for the new gens. Like we didnt say stupid shit back in the day as slang. But let me guess you didnt say anything dumb.

https://giphy.com/gifs/lSDFetrqeeY0rCi3Ss

7

u/ChiefMammothTusk 3h ago

I can almost guarantee there was an older person who thought the exact thing about you and your generations slang.

5

u/frosty_lizard 2h ago

Yeah for real, they're clearly just ball-maxxing

4

u/itchybutwhole69 1h ago

I agree. I'm really not a fan of just how dumbed down the English language is becoming. I get slang as always existed but now this new slang is just straight up replacing proper language all together. It's r/mildlyinfuriating.

4

u/FantasticJacket7 3h ago

Breaking news: Language evolves.

More at 11.

•

u/Eccohawk 22m ago

Evolves suggests it's getting better. I disagree.

•

u/FantasticJacket7 14m ago

The word evolves does not at all imply anything as subjective as "better"

1

u/DoesntMatterEh 1h ago

"literally any phrase"

Someone: Why can't people just talk normally?

0

u/Uncle_Touchy_Feely 3h ago

"Why can't people just talk normally" Why do people get mad when people use slang on the internet?

0

u/Custom_Craft_Guy2 1h ago

Because I hate having to drag out a thesaurus to translate what should be a simple sentence from abbreviated gibberish into something resembling the English language, that’s why!

-5

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 3h ago

OMG, you actually commented on such a thing? They have released the bots on you!! 😂😂

-8

u/Hephaistos_Invictus 3h ago

Def bad unc energy there homie frfr

1

u/Rampasta 3h ago

Got em!

-2

u/Hephaistos_Invictus 3h ago

I don't even know if it was correct lol. I just mimicked what I hear my students xD

2

u/Rampasta 2h ago

You nailed the feel of it. Big ups, G

-6

u/CliffBiffington 3h ago

Seriously. I interpret every new term as an insult anymore.

7

u/GayRacoon69 3h ago

Ironic to complain about others language while writing a sentence like that

"I interpret every new term as an insult anymore"

3

u/bacillaryburden 3h ago

I don’t even understand how that sentence was written. It’s not an understandable error. Did the person get distracted halfway through the sentence and forget how it started?

0

u/shadowmew1 3h ago

Slang is easier to understand than incorrect grammar.

6

You dont have to be good if you just edit the whole clip.

1

u/NUMBerONEisFIRST 3h ago

Holy shit, thanks for clarifying that for me.

I thought they were just they good at hackey sack, no joke.

1

u/FarCardiologist6295 2h ago

They never completed a volley. I can kick sack too

30

u/IOwnDirt 3h ago

What are they kicking thats so bouncy. They aren't booting the thing, but its launching into the air.

25

u/mktolg 3h ago

google `vietnam feet shuttlecock`. it has sort of a spring at the bottom.

75

u/CliffBiffington 3h ago

Nothing but porn came up.

19

u/mktolg 3h ago

Man, that's your search history then :D

3

u/IOwnDirt 3h ago

So it does. Thanks

5

u/MathIsHard_11236 3h ago

The "shuttle" is of paramount importance here.

3

u/spittlbm 2h ago

Cock is always important

1

u/QueSeraShoganai 1h ago

What was it again, cock shuttle?

4

u/Nacho_Beardre 3h ago

I will not google that

3

u/OkTemperature8170 2h ago

Nah I’m not falling for that again

13

u/whatsthatguysname 3h ago

Jianzi

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jianzi

The janzi itself is a coin like disk with feathers attached so it’s actually not bouncy.

3

u/Unworthy_Worth 2h ago edited 2h ago

This Shuttlecock looks kinda different though. Almost like it’s a beanbag. My understanding is that Jianzi is popular in China. But this looks like some sort of variant. Maybe it’s different in Vietnam?

Honestly, when I look at the video, I can’t tell if it’s a proper Jianz Shuttlecock or not. The yellow object is moving too quickly.

It’s mesmerizing to watch the pros though.

3

u/space_monster 2h ago

It sounds like a hacky sack

Edit: but looks like it has feathers

2

u/Unworthy_Worth 2h ago

Yeah, when I slowed the video down, you’re right, I think I see feathers.

It’s nice to see a game played that takes physical skill but there are people playing it older than 30s.

1

u/TheTaxman_cometh 2h ago

It's a cambodian sey

3

u/TRUEequalsFALSE 2h ago

Oh! I used to have one of those! So that's what that was!

23

u/jakepapp 3h ago

Save some women for the rest of us!

11

u/ok-MTLmunchies 3h ago

I remember failing hard at getting 3 hits in a row in hackey sack...

1

u/IronMonkeyofHam 1h ago

I wasn’t invited into those circles despite being the best soccer player amongst them.

•

u/blzrlzr 17m ago

Sounds like it was more about your attitude there Pele

•

u/IronMonkeyofHam 5m ago

Bet you’re proud of that one.

8

u/oo7changa1 3h ago

I have trouble kicking air

6

u/omegagiraffe 3h ago

I love to hack.

3

u/graveybrains 2h ago

Your sack?

2

u/omegagiraffe 2h ago

I kick the shit outta my sack.

2

u/stoney_philosopher 1h ago

Shit in your sack is not good

6

u/ErishKun 3h ago

Can this be learned without Jojo posing?

5

u/wunderl-ck 3h ago

This is so fucking cool it makes my teeth hurt

5

u/Azipcoder 3h ago

I am going to guess they learned to do this when it was just called “Aura seeding”.

2

u/Resident_Rain_6566 3h ago

Man, I’ve always wanted to learn how to do this. I’m seething with envy.

2

u/TheWooshiii 3h ago

These guys know how to handle a sack!

2

u/wikidemic 3h ago

That has gotta be more fun than pickle ball!!!

2

u/Djglamrock 3h ago

That was us back in high school during lunch.

2

u/Capable-Broccoli2179 3h ago

Ok. I’m an idiot. What is aura farming?

1

u/MilleniumPelican 2h ago

Showing off. Older generations would call it getting "style points" or earning a reputation, like "street cred".

1

u/Sad-Reindeer2755 3h ago

What civilized people do.

1

u/aagee 3h ago

Why do a lot of them put their hands up to their heads so daintily? Some don't at all.

7

u/TwinMugsy 3h ago

Trick shots. They going through their arms then kicking or kicking through their arms. Extra aura

3

u/JohnSnowsPump 3h ago

Extraura!

2

u/ButterflyGreedy2267 3h ago

Its too easy for them

1

u/kernelangus420 3h ago

It attracts mates of the opposite gender.

1

u/WarLawck 3h ago

I need a gif of the hacky sack scene from she's all that

1

u/MrPotato4217 3h ago

They make that look easy but i know id break my ankle if i even watched them do it.

1

u/Organic-Hispanic 3h ago

I can’t even catch a piece of popcorn in my mouth. This shits next level.

1

u/sunbleach_happypants 3h ago

Love to see hackey sack making a comeback with the youngsters today

1

u/InspectorFlat9270 3h ago

Me and the boys in highschool. Except at 10 sacks you gotta run because you gone get pelted.

1

u/Total_Rate316 3h ago

Are they hacky sacking. If so that's pretty good coordination.

1

u/JohnEBest 3h ago

Hackey Sack looks different these days

1

u/rastika 2h ago

This shit is even harder than it looks. I got bodied by my 10 year old students in vietnam during recess playing this game.

1

u/FriendshipWithTheSun 2h ago

All these years on this planet, and I can’t do anything cool like this. What am I even doing with my life…

1

u/Dendens 2h ago

Ronaldo could never

2

u/CruzMissile-005 2h ago

Whats with the hand gestures?

2

u/Aromatic-Monitor-262 2h ago

•

u/seansmellsgood 59m ago

This is the opposite of aura farming, they're just doing it for their own enjoyment...

0

u/EducationalTheory344 2h ago

lol no amount of skill will let you recoup the aura lost from being a guy playing hacky sack, it will always be a net negative.

-1

-9

It’s literally a sport. It’s named Sepak Takraw

8

u/rcoff98 3h ago

Pretty sure this isnt sepak takraw

0

u/ink0gni2 3h ago

Not Sepak Takraw but they are from the same traditional southeast asian game called Sepak or Sipa which literally means “to kick”. It’s synonymous to “playing catch” for baseball; or “kicking ball” for football.

4

u/CanadianGandalf 3h ago

It's literally not sepak takraw.
