Pattern Made some hats and released a pattern

Having made so many hats, they’re addicting and challenging, I’ve finally created a pattern. There’s my two preferred styles included, the 5-panel running cap and 6-panel dad cap. Both have three sizes and also adjustable closures.

I have a few unique techniques that eliminate steps that pros use special machines and attachments to get right. I also use EVA foam for the brim and make my own sweatbands so there’s really no special hat materials called out. There are a number of options for back closure but I tend to simply use narrow webbing and small ladder locks. In my experience this makes it possible for anyone to sew a hat reasonably well, and with practice, be making really polished hats.

I also designed these around modern approaches and materials that people will have on hand after making my other patterns. Supplex Nylon is a great choice. As is Monolite Mesh. I want to give Alpha Direct a shot for a winter hat.

If you’re interested you can find the PackLite Hat pattern on my site LearnMYOG.com. Happy to help answer any questions or discuss materials.

Pattern Making minimalist bifold wallets

Thumbnail

I’ve been carrying these Bifold Wallets for many months now and really like this minimalist, front pocket carry style. I tailored the pattern for three precise sizes: 4, 6, or 8 card carry. It’s a single fabric panel that’s folded and laminated with spray adhesive, minimizing bulk and raw edges. Two rows of stitching secure the card pockets. Coated or laminated pack fabrics ranging from 200d to 500d work great!

I’ve made these in the past with heat bonding, similar to my article https://learnmyog.com/articles/bondedSeams.html, however I like spray adhesive as it works great with fabric coatings and doesn’t require heat.

If you’re interested in making a few, the pattern is available now on my website. https://learnmyog.com/bifoldWallet.html

Pattern Fly fishing sling /chest pack

Hi everyone,

Been working on this pack concept for a little while and finally finished the final version. I call it the Sierra Pack and it's designed to be worn either on the chest, clipped to wader suspenders or backpack shoulder straps, or over the shoulder as a small sling pack. I've enjoyed using it both ways so far and it's very light and comfortable to carry. Plus it's pretty thin so it stays flat to the chest and out of the way. I also built in a magnetic fly patch and a tippet holder in the center.

The pattern and instructions are up now on my website, myogangler.com. I'm also finishing up a build tutorial video for my YouTube channel which should be out soon. Hope some of the fly fishers on here dig this one. The next project I'm fixating on is a weatherproof carry-all bag design that I hope works the way I want it to. I'll post my progress on that later.

Pattern Tent Pattern Generators (Freestanding, Tarp-Trekking Pole, Cat Cuts, Pole Curves): myogtutorials.com

I've had the idea of making a couple of tents on my mind for a long time, so instead of actually making them, I made a few helper tools instead. They're still work in progress, may have bugs, so let me know any feedback, issues or suggestions.

Tarp / Trekking Pole Tent Pattern Generator

Specify your desired max footprint dimensions and shape (pyramid, pentamid, hexamid) to generate the initial shape. You can drag the corners and tarp pole apex position to adjust to your preferred shape, or click a point to manually input values, including different height corners.

There is a 3D view with a box roughly matching a 6ft tall person to help scale. The pattern preview is an interactive canvas so you can move the pieces around to play with fitting onto your fabric width. You can export to a 1:1 real life scaled SVG for much finer control, such as snapping and joining panels using Inkscape or similar

Currently the tool just a single pole calculator (as this is what I'm planning to make) but dual pole may eventually be implemented (e.g. X-mid, lunar duo, lanshan 2).

This generator doesnt do anything you can't already with sketchup (you can export STL from this to load into sketchup via the STL addon), but was a fun project that makes a interactive playground, and the draw-flatten-export workflow should be faster

Two Pole Freestanding Tent Pattern Generator

This generates the unrolled side panels for the simple 2 pole dome tent based on your footprint size and pole length. Again it includes a 3D view with a 6ft person for rough scaling. You can export your shape as 3d models to further work on in Sketchup, Blender etc or a 1:1 scaled SVG pattern for the panels.

It can output a tent using either a parabolic curved pole, or a more physically accurate curve. The code for the more accurate curve is converted from u/bbhank 's super handy python notebook, which is based on a plugin created by Willmac8 on physicsforum. From experimenting with bending tent poles it does create a more accurate curve than a parabola estimation.

Catenary Curve Calculator

Adding a small cat curve cut to a seam can help with a tighter pitch. There are a few spreadsheets floating around, but this calculates in your browser with graphical, SVG and tabular outputs.

Tent Pole Curve Calculator

If you just want the tabular data for a tent pole curvature or a SVG, you can generate it here instead of a full 3D model using the freestanding pattern generator.

All these are completely free to use at www.myogtutorials.com

Pattern Many of you requested for the pattern. So here’s the pattern along with reference images of the bag that swiftly transitions from 4.5L sling mode to 18L backpack mode.

I’m sharing the pattern of the bag that I’ve built. I make patterns the old fashioned way which is by using hard pattern papers and a good old scissor.

I also tend to repurpose most of the patterns by adding markings and sketches on the main patterns to denote where the supplementary parts attach or align. I only make patterns for the most important parts and notes for others..

Since most of you wanted to buy the digital pattern for this; I’ve no idea on how to price it and how to make one. A bag like this can be very confusing to build, since a minor cm miscalculation can mean redoing the whole section from scratch, and unlike regular bags where certain miscalculations can be adjusted during sewing, this bag leaves no room for such errors.

Hence the 1st sample always comes out ugly. The image shared here is of the 3rd sample which did come out fine..

The point is even with the patterns, the bag might not come out as intended without a sample reference in hand.

I would love to hear your feedback and suggestions.

Pattern Does anyone 3D print or MYOG pump sack adapters?

This is a super niche ask, but does anyone print (and is willing to share a file) or know of a company that prints adapters for pump sacks?

I've got a Therm-a-Rest pump sack I absolutely love. It's seam-taped and waterproof with a wide opening (that cinches) so it doubles as a pack liner. I also stuff my clothes in it for a body pillow. It weighs very little (less than a compactor bag) and is more durable than nylofoam.

However, I also backpack with my 4-year-old about 1/2 the time. We just got my kid a Nemo Tensor pad (upgrading her to adult stuff). And the pump sack sucks. It's tapered at the top, so it's utterly useless as anything else. I have to carry her gear, so every ounce counts!

I'm wondering if anyone has bought or can develop an adapter that would fit into the Therm-a-Rest pump sack (female) and then can be screwed into the threaded Nemo Tensor (male) so I can use the same pump sack and just have a little adapter. Also open to any ideas for how I could MYOG it from the parts I've already got.

Sure, I could just blow up her pad. But I'm above 12k quite frequently, and she likes to use the pump sack to "do it herself." So there's that.

I do not own a 3d printer, but I have access to one via a neighbor or I'm happy to support a cottage shop.

I went searching the web and couldn't find anything relevant.

Pattern 30L Alpine Zip Minimalist Backpack Tutorial

Thumbnail
youtu.be
49 Upvotes

Hey Makers!
Matt from Red Paw here. I just released a new video + sewing pattern for a 30L "Alpine" style roll top backpack with optional side zip. It's a really simple backpack to make, perhaps the easiest I could think up, that works for hiking or climbing trips and allows you to customize it to your own needs.

This one is a full hour of tips and techniques to make the bag, showing the use of darts as structure to the bag, larger panel design for minimalist patterning and installing a massive zipper to give you two options for opening/closing the bag.

Our videos are always free and getting the patterns cost a modest amount of $$. To celebrate the launch of this new pattern, all of our patterns (including this one) are 20% off.

Even if you don't want to build this particular bag, I think the video is useful for the various techniques I show. Let me know what patterns you'd like to see next!

Pattern J Strap Pattern

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hey, striving forward with patterns and big things. As requested, I have a new J strap pattern available. Its ambiguity resides in the ability to adapt to removable style straps. That’s up to you.

The straps fit a phone or bars. Nothing new, just free!

Love the curiosity 😄

If you have a desire for removable and adaptable straps, I’d love to hear your thought. Nothing is permanent. Progress is gradual.

Pattern Bag update: A complete Sample Kit consisting physical pattern + pre cut materials & hardwares ready.

Thumbnail

Update from my last post:

A lot of people asked me if I could share the digital patterns for the bag, which unfortunately I couldn’t since I don’t have one.

Given the complexity and tricky design of the bag, I don’t think a digital pattern would explain how the bag is built specifically for someone just starting out.

Even for an experienced individual like me struggle to build the 1st piece from scratch without a proper physical reference.

Hence I’ve arranged a physical pattern along with sample kit consisting pre cut materials and hardwares.

I’m currently working to make a video tutorial on how to sew the bag from scratch..

If anyone wants the physical pattern, I can share it. I’m

currently offering it for Free.

Would love your feedback.

Pattern Sun Sleeves

Thumbnail

These are sun sleeves I designed. The idea originated when my buddy was diagnosed with skin cancer, but we spend the winter in Mexico and he plays pickleball several times a week. I liked the ones with the thumb opening, but he wanted them shorter, ending at the wrist so it didn't interfere with holding his paddle. They stay up due to gripping fabric as a facing on the inside/top. I was playing around with different widths of gripping elastic. I personally prefer the wider. The fabric is Sun Lite jersey, super lightweight and pretty cool even in the hot sun.

Pattern Looking for a good starting point for a 50L UL framed pack

Hey everyone!

I'm completely new to MYOG, but I'd really like to try making my own backpack.

What I have in mind is something around 50L, roughly inspired by packs like Atom Packs / Atelier Long Distance / Osprey, but with my own Frankenstein-style combination of features.

Ideally I'd like to combine the ultralight construction and aesthetics of modern UL packs with something closer to an Osprey-style frame/suspension, so basically a lightweight framed UL mashup.

The problem is that I've never made a backpack before, so I'm not really sure where to start.

I'm currently looking for a good existing pattern/template that I could use as a starting point and then modify. I don't necessarily expect to find an exact pattern for what I have in mind — I'd actually be happy with something reasonably close that I can experiment with.

Something around 45–50L (large/long torso size) would be ideal.

any tips, build threads, templates, dimensions, or resources for a beginner trying to design/modify a framed pack, I'd really appreciate it.

Pattern Trouble with making stencils.

Post image

So I make custom upcycled clothes —mainly jeans. I am trying to make a freezer paper stencil for a patch that's 4×5 for a knee patch. I keep tearing the letters because the there's not enough room to make decent size spaces. Any tips or tricks for doing more intricate designs?

Pattern Pattern for Kavu Throwshirt copy

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hi! New to sewing, might be a stupid question. I'd like to make something very similar to a Kavu Throwshirt from cotton duck. I can't seem to find a pattern. Could I use a pattern for a fleece pullover, as some of them are the same layout? Is there anything I need to keep in mind if I do this? Edit: the fit would not need to be the same, just the general look and layout. Edit 2: Thank you, all, for tips on patterns, and thoughts on converting a fleece pattern to woven.

Pattern Zip top handlebar bag pattern

Last night I put together a quick pattern for this handlebar bag. It's designed to fit on an old cannondale wire frame front rack, but you could easily set it up as a hanging bag or build your own rack out of 1/4" aluminum rod.

I recommend using a thin foam as a stiffener and line each panel independently.

Pattern 4 bike bag patterns

Post image
14 Upvotes

For a recent project I had to put together patterns for a series of bike bags. I thought that people in this community would enjoy making them too, so I'm sharing the pattern files. I haven't written instructions for any of the patterns, but they should be fairly self explanatory. I recommend lining all the pattern pieces and adding a stiffener to most of the panels. On the pattern pieces there is an inset dashed pattern piece wherever I add a foam stiffener.

Google Drive download link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1s1L3KvwH7OT0iiDIy8Hf7VwOogMpAp3s/view?usp=drivesdk

I'm including a link to where you can download the pattern from my site as well (https://www.gosshandmade.com/product-page/basic-bike-bags-4-patterns). The pattern is still free on the site since it doesn't have directions, but the increased traffic helps support my work.

Pattern Anyone know a good sun hoodie pattern?

Hi! I am a farmer in SE USA and wear sun hoodies every single day. I was hoping to get a pattern or a link to a pattern from y’all to make my own! I’m thinking about making some out of cotton gauze so it’s lightweight and a more natural fiber? I love my polyester and spandex but am wanting to try something new! Have any of you done something similar?
