Canada BC Resident seeking advice for mining jobs
Hey guys
I have been applying like crazy for the last couple months and I haven’t really gotten anywhere.
I was chatting with one guy who said my work experience aligns a lot with a construction miner, but these jobs require extensive underground experience. I have also applied for entry level haul truck, some drilling jobs(helper) and some other entry level jobs.
I have loads of experience as a Formwork/ framing carpenter, which I did for about 13 years including several years running my own business. I currently work as a construction superintendent. I am 33 years old
I miss working with my hands so management no longer interests me. The tough pill to swallow is I’m not very hireable in mining, and I’m wondering if it’s because of my actual experience puts me in a weird purgatory between entry level and skilled worker, but lacking any underground experience
Is there anyone else who’s been in a similar spot or any recruiter who can give some advice on the best route to take?
I’m determined to get in but some help would be awesome

Canada I am interested in pivoting to the mining industry
I am a lawyer and originally planned to go into mining, I took a different path and I regret not following my gut feeling which was to go into the mining industry.
I was looking to make connections with mining professionals and learn more about the industry.

Canada Mining purchasers: How do new suppliers actually get in the door?
Hi everyone,
I'm hoping to learn from people on the buying side of the mining industry.
For those of you involved in purchasing, maintenance, planning, or vendor management at mine sites...
How does a new supplier actually earn an opportunity?
I'm not talking about becoming the primary supplier overnight. I mean simply getting the chance to quote a job or prove themselves.
A few questions I've always wondered about:
Do cold emails ever get read?
Does LinkedIn work?
Is everything relationship-based?
What makes you willing to give a new supplier a shot?
What are the biggest mistakes new suppliers make?
If someone has a product with documented performance and a strong value proposition, what's the best way to get your attention without becoming another annoying sales call?
I'm genuinely curious how it works from your side. Any advice or stories from people involved in procurement or maintenance would be greatly appreciated.
I've tried a few cold emails and they just go unanswered haha
Thanks!

Canada Underground Common Core, Ontario
I've been interested in a career in the mines working underground for a while, I'm currently employed, married, but only one working for about a year now. My savings are completely spent, and I can't afford to pay out of pocket for the Underground Common Core training.
I'm currently employed as a supervisor at a factory job, pay is okay but not enough to support the two of us. I don't think I'd be able to qualify for the Bettter Jobs Ontario to cover the cost of course to start working underground. Is there any decent shot a company would sponsor the course? I applied to a few jobs and submitted references along with my resume, but haven't heard back and I'm starting to get discouraged. This is something I've wanted to do for a long time, but haven't jumped on due to family reasons. That has since passed, and I'd really like to follow through with it now.

Canada Mine Engineer - future prospects?
I'm currently a junior in highschool and was considering Mining Engineering as a career. I was looking at U of Alberta/McGill/UBC/Queen's for their Mining engineer programs. Grades are not a concern. I would graduate 2031 from now and am planning to also have a minor in business.
I have a few concerns I was worrying about:
- Is this a stable career in 5 years time and will there be jobs available considering AI.|
- How much money would I make coming out of school and later on and if business will benefit.
- I've hear that doing FIFO work will pay more and I'm not really a desk work guy. You can say I like being in the outdoors and outdoor sports like skiing and mtb.
- How stressful will it be day to day and what's the work environment like? I can handle stress but over time I can see it affecting me.
- What kind of lifestyle does this career provide me? I probably value work-life balance and salary the most.
Thanks for any help!
I was also looking into Health Sci and medicine but thought the education would take too long considering I'm not really passionate about it. I've always looked for a career that can allow me to travel the world in my 20s.

Canada Skeena Eskay Creek
Hi all. Wanted to see if anyone on this subreddit had any experience working at the Skeena Eskay Creek site, and could give me an overview of the camp accommodations? Any info would be great. Thanks!
Update Looks like I’ll be staying at the 58km camp. Anyone stayed at that one before? Thanks!

Canada Why are there so many boomers still holding high positions in mining?
A lot of young people with degrees are struggling to break into the system. Stating you need 4 years experience for an entry position is beyond ridiculous. Also a lot of older people aren't qualified either and aren't even contributing new ideas beneficial to projects. I know because I worked for a few.Alot of them spend most of their time doing office gossip and talking about going to the "Islands" in a couple of months Can you please get off the porch and retire so some of our friends can start working? You made enough money now bounce!
Sincerely,
Frustrated Millennial.

Canada Wrench designed by a miner
Canadian Miner here, for the past 6 months or so I've been designing and prototyping a wrench I could carry in my pocket that would keep me from reaching for my adjustable wrench as often as I do. No one likes rounded bolts heads all the time. Being in the mining industry, I wanted to be able to do things like hit it with a hammer, or use it with my impact gun, or a cheater pipe, things you wouldn't necessarily want to do with your ratcheting wrenches or adjustable wrench.
Trying to make a go launching these and get them into the hands of other miners and trades workers. Check the link on my profile if this is something that would interest you!

Canada Alberta mining help
Hi all, looking for some insight from those already in the game.
I see a lot of mentions on here about haul truck operators with no experience. I see the jobs advertised online & have applied for a few. I’m currently in the UK & have experience driving both rigid & articulated vehicles. I’m planning to move in the first week of November, whether I have a position lined up or not. Can anyone offer any tips or tricks for landing a job beforehand? Or any contacts I can phone in hopes of finding work?
Thanks in advance, especially for a question that has been asked over & over

Canada Haul truck operators in Canada
I have a valid license and a clean drivers abstract. Why is it near impossible to get a haul truck position ? Do these companies really not want to train anyone anymore ? Is there a certain program a person must complete or partake in to obtain employment ? Ive applied to dozens of jobs all labeled entry level.
Even in the oil & gas industry it’s the same thing they all want one year minimum experience. So frusterating..
Im talking even heavy civil earth works like they all say entry level and then require 1000 hours.. there’s got to be a way around this?

Canada Blundstone XFR 962 for mine site?
EDIT: I plan on getting a fall/winter boot later on, and there are no requirements other than CSA approved. No laces are fine.
Just landed a job in maintenance at Canadian mine site and am boot shopping. Found a deal on a pair of Blundstone XFR 962’s and was wondering if anyone had experience with them. Not a ton of reviews online, especially geared toward mine sites. Any input is appreciated!

Canada Why does my dog sense dynamite going off 3 whole minutes before it blasts?
Hi mining community! I live 2km (1.2 miles) from a quarry in canada that produces crushed stone for paving materials. They email us in advance whenever they will be dynamiting.
Every time a dynamite is about to go off, my mostly-outdoors dog asks to come in to hide in the basement (other noises like thunder and gunshots sends her running inside as well). She is a Pyrenees cross and a very wise old dog.
I get that maybe she would sense the vibration, or hear the sound before we do, but she asks to go inside a good 3-5 minutes before the blast, every time.
What is she sensing a solid 3 minutes before the blast? Maybe the smell of the chemicals??
Thanks for your time and insight!

Canada Trying to start a mining career!
Hello guys I got a few questions about joining the mining industry, I’m 20 years old right now with no mining or underground experience and do not have my common core, I do have around a year of construction experience and I did take a level 1 trade school class, I was just wondering if it’s possible for someone like me with not any experience at all to get my foot in the door in a mine, I have family and friends who work in the mines and that’s where my passion comes from I have been applying at almost every position I seen on indeed hoping I’d get an interview and not much luck yet, I know about the shifts and I’m willing to work any type of shifts right now, does anyone have any tips for me that can help me get my foot in the door of the mining industry? I currently live in Sudbury ON.

Canada Geological Eng vs Mining Eng
Hey guys, I am a grade 11 student deciding on whether I should pursue mining engineer or geological engineering. I am good at math and science, ambitious, and willing to put in hard work. I know with a geo Eng, I could have both my p.eng and P.geo. But mining eng pays a lot more for starting pay. I am torn between the two as they both seem like really good options. My main goal however is getting to at least a 1m net worth by 30. I also know that with geo eng it has a higher ceiling because if I’m able to find a good deposit and get a royalty, that would essentially be generational wealth.

Canada Mining career pt2
Hello guys I recently came in here asking for tips on how to join the mining industry with no experience and a little construction experience.
I’m 20 living in Sudbury ON, and always had a passion to work in the mines yes I know it’s not an easy process but right now I’m feeling like it’s kinda impossible. I’ve applied to over 75 entry level jobs like driller helper or assistant, nipper, etc, I’ve even reached out to companies I’m not sure where to go from here, I know not having my surface or U/G common core really hurts me but all I want is something that’ll get my foot in the door and in all honesty I do not have 11k to do the U/G common core course, I was told by people on here keep applying and someone is bound to train me but what do I actually got to do to get my foot in the door, anyone who works in the mines currently around Sudbury Ontario can give me a few tips that would be great I really don’t wanna give up.

Canada Diabete and epilepsie -> Mining
Hey,
So I got accepted this summer in a Mining Engineer school. I would be starting my studies next January. Unfortunately this month, I got diagnosed with both T1D and epilepsy. I'm based in Canada and was planning to work in the North where most mines are. I know they do medical exams before hiring. So I wanted to know how realistic is it for me to be accepted in a mine as a mining engineer with those 2 conditions ?

Canada Baffinland Mary River
Hey guys, I was offered a position as an equipment operator at the Baffinland Mary River mine. I have never done any kind of camp work so it’s all new to me. My main concern is I noticed recently baffinland has followed for creditor protection, thus makes me wonder if that should effect my decision on taking the job? Being offered good money , 21 on 21 off. Was looking for some insight on someone who’s worked there on the experience they’ve received in regards to camp aswell as if it’s a safe bet to leave a FT Job for this career change.

Canada Hello Champs I want to hear some of your stories from the mining industry!
A quick introduction on me. I grew up in the far east of Canada, was born into a white collar mining family that usually dealt with the executives and investors. at an early age I completely fell in love with mining, and at 17 I decided to go into the industry, attending investment conferences in New Orleans and Toronto. I'm 19 now and still intrigued by everything in the industry!
During this time in these conferences you don't usually hear about the entertaining or interesting stories about what happens at the mines or in the field during sampling. If there is anyone that has some stories about working in this industry they've been wanting to tell, I would love to hear them!

Canada Aussie moving to Canada, where would you live/FIFO from?
The Job offer allows for FIFO from the following locations Nanaimo, Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George, Smithers and Calgary.
As someone who is moving over for a change and wanting to snowboard, hike & be out in nature during off swings what towns would you suggest? I don't mind things being quiet and love the outdoors.
What's you pick and for what reasons?

Canada Can I copy a figure from a NI 43-101?
there's a geological cross-section map of a hill that's set to be mined near my community which details current topography, pit design, and drilling areas. is that a public reference that can be freely shared in online communities such as reddit, or maybe in blogs or news reports?

Canada Artemis Blackwater
Is anyone who is currently or previously employed by Artemis Blackwater able to give me a run down on what kind of incentives they offer on their cheques? Night shift premium? Weekend premium? What does the average cheque look like after taxes, and what wage are you making to make that net amount?
I may leave my current employer if the numbers are right
