Question/Advice -- General Advice

Just got a new to me kayak that has seen better days but still floats. Plan on using it for hunting and fishing so there will be a lot of rocks, oyster beds, and sometimes dragging involved. I’m thinking of spraying the bottom of it in bedliner to help protect it from scraps and holes a little better.

Any thoughts?

Blog/Self-Promo 125 km sea kayaking around the Croatian islands: five days, two paddlers, self-guided

I'm based in Cumbria, UK, and normally paddle around the Scottish west coast and Irish Sea, but in September a friend and I headed to Croatia for five days of island hopping.

Starting in Trogir, we paddled through Drvenik Veli, Drvenik Mali, Šolta and Čiovo before finishing in Split, covering 125 km.

We had a mixture of sheltered island passages, open crossings and some fairly lively conditions along the southern coast of Šolta. We also managed some wild camping, excellent meals ashore and a few memorable encounters with the yachties.

We organised it as a self-guided trip, hiring kayaks and equipment locally and making our own route and paddling decisions.

I've written up the expedition with photographs, route details, costs and equipment for anyone interested in paddling this part of the Adriatic.

Anyone else here paddled the Dalmatian islands? I'd be interested to hear which routes you explored.

Went on a nice 5-6 hour kayak trip down the river. Saw so many different animals starting with a dozen turkeys in my driveway lol...

Saw cranes, herons, 5-6 eagles, a mink, a coyote, and the more common small birds and fish. What a great time owning a kayak has been so far!

And just do gorgeous out on the river, especially in the fall. Hoping to get out again as the leaves keep changing.

🤙🏻

Haven’t tried my hand at winter paddling in New England, so I put them away for the winter. I guess the multilayered hulls are susceptible to extreme weather, otherwise I would’ve left them in the uninsulated barn.

There are not going to be many more opportunities to get out this year before the water gets too cold.

Question/Advice -- Gear Recommendations Seeking Advice - Marvel 14.5

Thumbnail

Hello! Recently picked up this Native Watercraft Marvel 14.5 Tandem Kayak. It has an option to go into solo mode by moving the seat forward, but I can’t work out how you’re supposed to get the foot pegs into the ideal position, as they’re now ideally somewhere in the middle of the existing tandem positions?

Seeking advice from anyone that may have had this kayak before, there’s a couple of different versions and unfortunately I can only find an instructions and manuals on the later model.

Also, if can anyone point me toward a suitable spray skirt, if not a diy resource? Would be happy to try and make some given it’s an older model.

Thanks in advance

Videos Somehow this 30 km kayak race was harder than the 100 km one I did earlier this year

Did another kayak marathon here in Estonia, this time on the Pirita River, just outside Tallinn.

The route was pretty straightforward. About 15 km upstream, turn around a buoy and paddle back to where we started.

The problem was the current. We've had unusually high water levels this autumn, and even some of the regular participants said they hadn't seen the river like this in years.

There was one section under a highway bridge where I honestly felt like I was barely moving. 😅

My average speed upstream was 5.5 km/h. Coming back it was 8.5 km/h, so quite a difference.

Finished with 29.3 km in 4h 24min. Funny thing is, I did the 100 km Võhandu Marathon earlier this year and somehow felt less exhausted afterwards.

Anyway, I filmed the whole thing and put together a 10-minute video if anyone wants to see what the river and the race looked like: https://youtu.be/bzOWd5m2aFw

Anyone else find paddling upstream this much harder than just covering a longer distance?

Pictures I bought this old Pungo for my dog

It was on marketplace to $20. My other boat is 17 foot wooden CLC but i wanted Pungo to paddle with my dog.

It looks horrible but it's really in great shape. no cracks, no serious scuffing. Seat needs some love.

How big a job would it be to put in a forward bulkhead and a hatch to make it a bit more like a modern Pungo 120 ?

Today is my partner’s birthday so my dad came to visit and we all went kayaking one more time for the year. Even brought the little commodore one last time.

Not pictured are all the jumping fish, the jumping seals, or the snoofling seals that were all out today. There was also a bald eagle as we came back into town. All in all an absolutely lovely afternoon on the water.

Question/Advice -- Gear Recommendations Can Someone Help Identify The Brand?

Post image

I purchased these 3 13 foot kayaks last night and I can’t find any branding anywhere on them. They look to be fairly old. Any ideas of who the manufacturer is? Also, I’d love some recommendations for a good lightweight paddle and life jacket.

The further north you go the better it gets I've learned. This was my 19th year of adventuring in the islands and I'm absolutely enamored. This year we had sea wolves 🤩, sooo many caves to explore, hundreds of sea otters, leaping whales, and the best of food. Smitten. 🥰 Thank you for keeping your wilds wild Canada. Sorry about the dumb shit we ('murica) are up to currently but keep being you.

Question/Advice -- Boat Recommendations Portable Kayak recommendations

I’m just getting into kayaking. I bought a Tucktec folding kayak on sale. Unfortunately I think I’m too heavy for it. I just went out into the water for the first time. It’s quite cramped for me (5’10”) and I could hear things creaking and I felt the bottom sagging more than I think it is. I’m 260 lbs. any recommendations for a kayak for me. I looked at Oru but I’m not sure how much better the construct is. And I hesitate to spend that much. Ideally my budget is around 600$.

I'm trying to buy a used kayak on Marketplace. This is a WaveSport Diesel 65, looks pretty good aside from that cut. Is it ok? Or should I pass it up?

Pictures Update on my Current Designs Freedom: She's beauty and grace and I can finally paddle her without flipping. This boat has really forced me to improve my paddling form. I also ended up taking a few selfies because I was afraid to look at rudder and I needed to see where it was pointed!
