Hi there fine folks of r/SUP, it's time for your monthly "What Board Should I Get?" discussion thread.

Start by reading the "Buying a SUP" section of the wiki!

There is a ton of information there! Once you've read through the wiki, create a top-level comment in this post to ask for help! Posts made on this subject outside of this discussion thread will be removed and asked to post here instead.

You can also check all of the previous "What Board Should I get?" threads.

For general information on choosing board size and shape, check out the wiki, or these two blog posts on the subject: Choosing the Right Size SUP and Understanding Paddle Board Shapes.

Please provide ALL of the following information so that we can help you as best as possible:

  • Desired Board Type: Inflatable or Hard
  • Your Height and Weight (please include if you will also bring kids/dogs/coolers/etc. and estimated weights)
  • Desired use/uses (casual, fitness, racing, yoga, whitewater, surfing, etc.) and terrain (ocean, river, lake, etc)
  • Experience level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
  • Your budget (please provide an actual number) and country location (to help determine availability)
  • What board(s) you current have or have used and what you liked/didn't like about them

The more of this information you can provide, the more accurately we can help you find a board that you'll love!

If you are responding to a comment with a suggestion - explain why! Don't just name a board and leave it there. Add to the discussion. If you are recommending against a specific board - explain why!

How To Question COLD WEATHER PADDLING SAFETY AND CLOTHING

Things are cooling down in the Northern Hemisphere and lots of folks are (rightfully) asking what to do to keep paddling safely when it's colder.

ColdWaterSafety.org for detailed information about paddling safety in cold water

This guide for stand up paddle boarding in the winter has information distilled from Cold Water Safety along with recommendations on types of clothing for different water temperatures.

Always Dress For Immersion!

No matter your skill level, we are all between swims. Immersion in cold water can be debilitating and even deadly within seconds. Always dress for the water temperature, even on warmer days. It's far easier to cool down while paddling than it is to warm back up.

Cold shock is a serious concern in water as "warm" as the low 50F range (10C) and can cause near-instant drowning.

Water transfers heat ~25x faster than air. Hypothermia is a serious concern even in these shoulder seasons before it gets really cold. Bring dry clothing, a towel, and warm beverages with you (on the beach or in a dry bag).

Wear Your PFD / Life Jacket!

While a PFD isn't technically thermally protective, it can help. But more importantly it will help keep you afloat in an emergency. "But I'm a good swimmer!" Are you better than a USCG Rescue Swimmer? It didn't take long (less than a minute) for this one to suffer from incapacitation in cold water (Jump to 6:15).

Follow Basic Paddling Safety Guidelines

Check the weather, use appropriate equipment, wear your PFD, paddle with a partner, carry effective communication, leave a float plan.

When in doubt, don't go out.

Electric pump

Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my Ryobi inflator and SUP adapter. I’ve tried using it to pump my kayak to the recommended PSI multiple times, but it just won't work, so I always end up using the manual hand pump. Has anyone experienced this or knows how to fix it? Thanks a lot!

Does anyone actually track metrics to improve on SUP?

Hey! Question for anyone using SUP for fitness, endurance or race preparation. How do you actually track your progress?

I’ve been trying to train more seriously but checking stats on Garmin / Strava after session is honestly driving me nuts: it’s hard to compare sessions over time, it’s just a wall of raw numbers, and none of it actually tells me how to improve!!

Any dedicated apps that actually make sense of paddling data (Waterspeed, Paddle Logger, etc.), or do you just ignore pace and paddle by feel and heart rate?

New SUP owner here, what accessories are actually worth buying?

Just got my first inflatable SUP and took it out for the maiden trip. Turns out manually pumping it up is a brutal workout, lol.

Now I’m wondering what gear I should pick up next. What are the must-have accessories, and what stuff is just overhyped garbage? Leash, dry bag, electric pump, PFD… I see tons of options.

I mostly paddle on calm lakes for casual trips. Any recommendations or things I should skip?

Sandbars / Tidal Islands in South / Central Florida?

Hi, been paddle boarding for a few years now. Was wondering if there were any spots in Florida I could paddle to that are kind of like a sandbar that turns into dry land or close to it when the tide goes low. Anyone know of any good spots? Would be taking my girlfriend so wouldn't want to do any paddle routes that are too difficult. Would be looking for one where there'd be as few other people as possible.

Just got my new SUP, first time taking it out on the water.

Man, pumping it up absolutely wrecked me. I’m totally wiped after just getting it ready.

Can’t believe how much work this is. Anyone else feel this way the first time?

Taking long to inflate

I’ve paddle boarded for a while and it’s my first time using an electric air pump - specialty the aerogogo giga pump zetta138.

When I first start the inflation process, I have the center pin “up” in inflation mode. When I attach the air pump hose, I push and turn. I hear air coming out and going in at the same time. PSI is increasing and at 10 min, it’s barely hitting 1.0 PSI.. what am I doing wrong?

I’m using the “short adaptor” attachment that’s recommended in the manual for SUPs. Settings at SUP mode and 15 PSI.

Any tips or help is appreciated! TIA.

Our SUP season here in Northern Italy is slowly coming to an end.

To fight the end-of-season blues, I wanted to share some pictures from our coastal trip to Tropea, Calabria and the surroundings.

Early september we took our boards to Calabria and paddled the "Coast of the Gods" across 3 distinct tours—from the cliffs of Tropea and (the wild waters) around Capo Vaticano to our favoeite spot at Spiaggia di Michelino.

A highlight from my summer: seeing my 4.5 year old paddling and standing on their own on the paddle board. (Parent there for safety)

That kid has been on a paddle board for most of their life now. It's great seeing them paddling for themself now!

Made the sup more comfortable with a TEMU seat, and more stable with floats (Amazon). No fish caught but at least I had bites and enjoyed myself.
