Ad Ever thought about being a CyRide driver? We're hiring!

CyRide is hiring!

Hello everyone! Just wanted to make everyone aware that CyRide is hiring. Bottom line, we need a minimum of 30 safe, responsible, and customer-service driven transit drivers within the next six months. Apply today!

https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/cityofames/jobs/5380976/transit-driver-pt?page=2&pagetype=jobOpportunitiesJobs

Note: You do not need a CDL or large vehicle experience to apply to CyRide. 95%+ of drivers that apply do not have one. We will train you how to get one. Training and the CDL examination is paid.

Ames Transit Agency (D.B.A CyRide), an agency of the City of Ames, is an equal employment opportunity (EEO) employer. Position is subject to drug and alcohol testing.

Our current needs:

Currently, CyRide is prioritizing applicants with the following weekday* availability, with at least some Friday availability as a requirement:

  • ~7:00am - ~11:00am
  • ~10:00am - ~3:00pm
  • ~2:00pm - ~7:00pm

At this time, we are not prioritizing nights/weekends applicants, but those with that availability may still apply.

Note: Due to the extensive training process that CyRide provides, a minimum commitment of 1 year of employment is required, with preference to applicants that can commit beyond that.

Wage & Benefits

Starting wage is $22.89/hr, with paid vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay depending on your status (1/2 time & 3/4 time only). CyRide offers an accommodating schedule and will make sure your shifts do not overlap with classes. CyRide also works with ISU for priority class registration if you are a CyRide driver. Additionally, CyRide guarantees off time for exams. A comprehensive list of benefits can be found on the application page above.

Your schedule is set, meaning once you finalize your run assignment, you know what you are working each week until your classes change.

Build a schedule between 15-39 hours per week, with current opportunities for overtime if wanting to work beyond that. Most college students fall somewhere between 15-25 hours.

Meet your CyRide Drivers!

If you've ever wondered if you can drive a bus, you should watch the following video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Br1Gy4FJPC4&t=2s

On a personal note, before I applied at CyRide, I was wondering if this would be the right fit for me. I was worried about driving a large vehicle and navigating campus during class changes. That all changed on day two of training, where you learn that it's really not as big of an issue as you thought to drive these things as long as you watch your mirrors and pay attention. The training program is extremely comprehensive, and you will be a safe driver at the time of graduation from training. Three promotions and nearly twelve years later, I continue to reiterate that applying to CyRide was one of the best decisions I've ever made, and is the best job I've ever had.

Training and Hiring bonus

Training is paid at the starting wage listed above, and takes about 2-3 months dependent on your availability. It is split into two sections: Out-of-Service training, and In-Service training. During Out of Service, you simply learn how to safely drive the bus along with an overview of CyRide's routes and get your CDL. This usually takes about 40-60 hours. For in-service training, you are driving actual driving shifts and picking up passengers with an instructor present and comprehensively learning the CyRide's routes, procedures, timetables, transfers, radio usage, etc. This generally takes about 80-100 hours.

At this time, CyRide is offering a $1000 total hiring bonus to applicants. The pay structure is as follows:

  • First paycheck: $250
  • Completion of training: $250 (this means graduation to CyRide driver/being on your own.)
  • Six months of employment: $500

Questions?

If you have any questions or concerns, drop a comment or call CyRide and ask for Mike and I will be happy to answer.

CyRide Question about free stops on weekends

My parents are coming to Ames for Parents’ Weekend, and they’ll probably want to visit my apartment at Frederiksen Court.
I’ve noticed that on weekends, CyRide seems to be asking passengers for a student ID, bus pass, or fare even when boarding at stops that are normally free.
Last year, I remember anyone being able to board at those stops without paying, regardless of whether they were an ISU student.
Has CyRide changed its weekend policy, or am I misunderstanding how the free stops work? I’d especially appreciate clarification from someone who works for CyRide.
Thanks!

Parking

Maybe I’m just stupid but I always assumed that the green ParkMobile signs that say they operate Monday-Friday from 7am to 5:30pm were free after 5:30pm and on the weekends. Been here for two years and a visitor got a ticket from parking there… Any way to dispute this or recommendations for parking for non-students on campus around the residence halls?

Question How much should a soph expect to pay in rent?

I’m a freshman deciding if I want to go through with joining a frst. In house is about $4,500 a semester or $9,000 for the year that includes lunch and dinner 3 times a week. I have no clue the rent rates or anything so can anyone let me know if I would be paying the more or less to rent an apartment and be a normal student.

Question Spring Semester Schedule

I was making my schedule for the next semester.

  1. To figure out what classes don't clash, so I can take the classes I need
  2. For my Major Orientation class assignment

However almost quite often, the timings for the classes are changing, and it is causing me to change my list of classes often.

When can I expect the final schedules to be available on Workday ?

Question When is the best time to find a house rental??

I’ve been starting my search bc my apartment wants us to renew by the end of October and I don’t wanna get stranded. I’ve heard that it’s more common for houses to find one January-March time but I would rather be ahead than late. I also don’t wanna go with one rn and then find out there were tons of great options later and I settled early. Any advice is appreciated!

Hey Cyclones! Crave may be new, but our family isn’t new to Ames.

We’re the same family run business that has spent the past decade serving events, schools, organizations and fundraisers throughout the Ames community with our mobile brands. Now, instead of only finding us at an event or tracking down a truck, we finally have a place you can stop in every day.

At Crave, we’ve brought together Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee, Kona Ice, Beverly Ann’s Warm Cookies & Ice Cream, and Fizz’d by Crave all under one roof.

You can grab coffee, lattes, matcha, frozen coffee drinks, energy drinks, Kona Ice, Blended real-fruit smoothies, warm cookies, ice cream, Annwiches, Pepsi fountain drinks, and Fizz’d dirty sodas made with Pepsi, Alani and Red Bull products.

And we’re just getting started! Acai’d by Crave bowls, breakfast, Cravewiches and more craveable food are coming soon.

We’re still the same family that has loved being part of Ames fundraisers and community events for years, we just finally have a permanent home where you can visit us daily.

Crave • 2420 Lincoln Way
Monday–Saturday • 7 AM–7 PM

Come say hi, try something new, and let us know what you want to see us add next.

Q: Employment Does the career center help students with mental health issues get the advice they need

I have autism so this interviewing stuff ain’t for me. I’ve been referred to the career center a few times so I was curious if they help mentor neurodivergent students
