CyRide is hiring!

Hello everyone! Just wanted to make everyone aware that CyRide is hiring. Bottom line, we need a minimum of 30 safe, responsible, and customer-service driven transit drivers within the next six months. Apply today!

https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/cityofames/jobs/5380976/transit-driver-pt?page=2&pagetype=jobOpportunitiesJobs

Note: You do not need a CDL or large vehicle experience to apply to CyRide. 95%+ of drivers that apply do not have one. We will train you how to get one. Training and the CDL examination is paid.

Ames Transit Agency (D.B.A CyRide), an agency of the City of Ames, is an equal employment opportunity (EEO) employer. Position is subject to drug and alcohol testing.

Our current needs:

Currently, CyRide is prioritizing applicants with the following weekday* availability, with at least some Friday availability as a requirement:

  • ~7:00am - ~11:00am
  • ~10:00am - ~3:00pm
  • ~2:00pm - ~7:00pm

At this time, we are not prioritizing nights/weekends applicants, but those with that availability may still apply.

Note: Due to the extensive training process that CyRide provides, a minimum commitment of 1 year of employment is required, with preference to applicants that can commit beyond that.

Wage & Benefits

Starting wage is $22.89/hr, with paid vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay depending on your status (1/2 time & 3/4 time only). CyRide offers an accommodating schedule and will make sure your shifts do not overlap with classes. CyRide also works with ISU for priority class registration if you are a CyRide driver. Additionally, CyRide guarantees off time for exams. A comprehensive list of benefits can be found on the application page above.

Your schedule is set, meaning once you finalize your run assignment, you know what you are working each week until your classes change.

Build a schedule between 15-39 hours per week, with current opportunities for overtime if wanting to work beyond that. Most college students fall somewhere between 15-25 hours.

Meet your CyRide Drivers!

If you've ever wondered if you can drive a bus, you should watch the following video:

On a personal note, before I applied at CyRide, I was wondering if this would be the right fit for me. I was worried about driving a large vehicle and navigating campus during class changes. That all changed on day two of training, where you learn that it's really not as big of an issue as you thought to drive these things as long as you watch your mirrors and pay attention. The training program is extremely comprehensive, and you will be a safe driver at the time of graduation from training. Three promotions and nearly twelve years later, I continue to reiterate that applying to CyRide was one of the best decisions I've ever made, and is the best job I've ever had.

Training and Hiring bonus

Training is paid at the starting wage listed above, and takes about 2-3 months dependent on your availability. It is split into two sections: Out-of-Service training, and In-Service training. During Out of Service, you simply learn how to safely drive the bus along with an overview of CyRide's routes and get your CDL. This usually takes about 40-60 hours. For in-service training, you are driving actual driving shifts and picking up passengers with an instructor present and comprehensively learning the CyRide's routes, procedures, timetables, transfers, radio usage, etc. This generally takes about 80-100 hours.

At this time, CyRide is offering a $1000 total hiring bonus to applicants. The pay structure is as follows:

  • First paycheck: $250
  • Completion of training: $250 (this means graduation to CyRide driver/being on your own.)
  • Six months of employment: $500
