Advice 7-year-old Greyhound with sarcoma ā would you choose radiation considering his other health issues?
Hi everyone,
weāre facing a really difficult decision with our 7-year-old retired racing Greyhound Bennett and would really appreciate experiences from people who have been in a similar situation.
The short version:
Bennett recently had a tumour removed from his right front leg. Pathology showed a strongly invasive grade II sarcoma, most likely a neurofibrosarcoma, and it was most likely not completely removed with clean margins. His chest X-rays were clear.
An oncologist thinks radiation is a good option and has offered either 6 or 10 treatments, costing around ā¬5,000ā6,000. Amputation is another option, but we are worried about that because Bennett already has arthritis/chronic pain in his hind legs.
Our biggest question isnāt whether we want to spend the money on him. Itās whether it makes sense considering his overall health and what the next few years might realistically look like.
Bennett already has several other health issues:
He has had arthritis/chronic problems in his hind legs and feet for about three years. We have been giving supplements for almost three years, which have helped a lot.
On good days he can still walk for around 45 minutes, but that is basically his maximum now and those really good days are becoming less frequent.
His kidney values are mildly concerning and are currently being investigated further. We already changed his diet about a year ago to a more kidney-friendly food, but despite that his kidney values have continued to worsen.
Several teeth have already had to be removed, and his remaining front teeth need monitoring.
He is also very sensitive to changes on his body. For example, if a leg is shaved for an IV or a procedure, he can become very focused on the area and lick it until the skin becomes sore. After procedures we often have to protect those areas very carefully.
Despite all of this, he still eats very well, enjoys being close to us, loves massages and affection on his own terms, and is still very much himself.
He has always been a very quiet and independent dog. He came to us at three years old after racing and it took him a long time to really trust us. He has always been a bit of an āold soulā and was never a very cuddly or high-energy dog, so his calm personality itself isnāt something new.
The financial side is also making this decision much harder.
His insurance has cancelled his policy after all of his previous treatments, so we would most likely have to pay for the radiation ourselves. We donāt simply have ā¬5,000ā6,000 available for this, so we would probably need to take out a loan or use money that is actually our financial safety net for a future pregnancy and loss of income.
Another thing that worries us is that for the last two years it feels like there has constantly been something new with Bennett ā teeth, pain, kidney values, surgeries, and now cancer.
Because of that, weāre not only worried about the health problems we already know about. Weāre also afraid that something completely new could appear that we donāt even have on our radar right now.
Our fear is that we spend ā¬5,000ā6,000 now, the radiation works well, but then a year later another serious health problem appears. At that point we might no longer be able to afford another expensive treatment and could still have to say goodbye, despite having spent so much money trying to help him now.
I know nobody can predict how long a dog will live, and weāre not expecting anyone here to make this decision for us.
We would just really like to hear from people with similar experiences.
Has anyone here had a Greyhound receive radiation for a soft tissue sarcoma? How did they cope with the treatment and repeated anaesthesia? How bad were the skin reactions, and how long did you achieve good tumour control?
And if your Greyhound already had several other chronic health problems at the same time, how did you decide whether another major and expensive treatment was still worth pursuing?
We would genuinely like to hear from people who chose radiation, amputation or decided not to pursue further cancer treatment.
We donāt want to do everything simply because it is medically possible. We want to make the decision that gives Bennett the best chance of having as much good-quality time as possible.

Advice Adopting a Second Greyhound?
Howdy all - looking for some advice.
We're currently fostering a sweet fawn boy, and he's got more personality and playfulness than any grey we've fostered so far. After 3 weeks of fostering him, our resident girl is indifferent; they don't really play together or interact yet, but she's 9 and he's almost 2.
My question, for those with two greys - what made you decide to take in a second pup? Pros or cons to having two vs. just one?
Thanks!

That face. Good lord.

Personal Very proud of my boy
The other day we went for our usual around the block loop, a route we do frequently. I live in a New England version of a city right on Main Street so we encounter other walkers and people out and about all the time.
We had walked down one street and were going up the next when a man walking toward us with two identical canvas tote bags in his hands asked me āis that a Doberman?ā I said, āno a greyhound,ā he smiled and said something like āahā and kept walking.
I am not one to typically stereotype people based on looks but I thought to myself wow someone who is finally normal asking me about my dog because I get A LOT of people that come up to me and assume they can fuss all over him and rush over with there dogs to meet him because of his calm disposition despite me setting boundaries and not having a calm disposition.
However it took a turn. We walked a few paces up with him continuing past us when Denny stopped to pee. As we all know they take forever to pee so I was just looking around and could see he was still walking the other way. I glanced back towards Denny (still peeing) then look around again and notice heās gone. I think āweirdā but assume he went into one of the houses right there and I somehow didnāt notice it but keep in mind there is a big tree on the street right where he disappeared. I donāt think much of it and we continue to walk when heās done peeing. Then I hear footsteps in the leaves behind me and glance back and there the man is RIGHT on my tail. I start getting a little nervous and pick up our pace, he speeds up too to try and stay close to me.
At this point Iām freaking out because there is no logical reason I can think of that he would have needed to reverse direction right as I passed him when he was originally walking toward main st and has now reversed to go farther away from the center of town. I decided to cross the street and make a beeline for a woman ahead of me walking her dogs so I wasnāt alone with him and did not take the street we would normally take to go back home. He keeps following at a close distance but did not cross the street and has now followed me for about a half mile in the opposite direction he had been traveling. I texted my roommate that he needed to come get us in his car now as we were getting further from home and he was still following. My roommate picked us up and no one was hurt, I was just extremely terrified.
Iām so proud of Denny because I had his leash very short holding him close to my side and heās a dog who normally needs to stop and investigate every leaf and speck of dirt but he kept his head high and marched right along side me at a pretty good pace. I know he could definitely sense my anxiety and fear and he kept glancing back at the guy too. I donāt know if Denny wouldāve activated some sort of protection mode had the guy tried something and I donāt really think I have ābig dog privilegeā with him as heās not very intimidating in his fleece sweater. I wonder if the guy new more about dogs than he let on and when I said Denny was a greyhound and not a Doberman he felt more comfortable following me like that (I do know Dobermans are sweet hearts too but stereotypes exist unfortunately).
Anyways I just wanted to share this story to brag about my boy and how in tune I feel like he is to my thoughts and emotions and knowing when he can test limits and when he needs to do exactly as I say. I love him so much. Attached in the comments is a picture of him in his very intimidating sweater look.
And apologies in advance if formatting is weird, trying my best on mobile.

Park day/hotel stay while we had floors redone at home
Fairly confident Iām going to have to get him his own queen sized bed for home.
Brave boy was so good during a weird couple days in a hotel! Also, not surprising, was a huge hit with everyone he came into contact with!

Help em up harness sizing
After reading reviews in this group I am going to purchase a Help Em Up harness to help my nearly 11year old 80lb boy navigate stairs.
Wanted to hear about your experience with sizing for male greyhounds. Heās right on the border of medium vs large sizes. For those who have used with male greys, is the regular or UBand fit better?
Appreciate your help!

Advice My dog is reluctant to eat
Scooter is a wonderful dog but over the last couple of months he has been reluctant to eat. We moved apartments a few weeks ago and he did give himself a couple of hot spots on his legs but his stress licking seems to have stopped and the hot spots have healed. He is definitely a picky eater and in the past there have been kibbles that he has refused to eat. Right now he is eating 1 2/3 cups of purina proplan sport 20/30 blend. He gets that and 1.5 teaspoons of psyllium husk fiber mixed with 1 cup of water and 150 grams of some type of wet food twice daily. I just got back from camping and he was only eating half of his food while with the dog sitter. Yesterday night I just gave him the dry food and he practically inhaled his food. Scooter is almost never a fast eater unless it is a unique food or he is walking more than 5 miles a day. This morning he got his normal mixture and wouldn't touch it till 2:00 pm when I stirred āit up called him over and starred at him while he was eating. When he gets a new food he will enthusiastically eat the food one or maybe a few times at most and then he is back to his usual general disinterest if food. Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated.

Best Non-slip Arthritic Dog Bed for 13.5yo Greyhound?
Does anyone have some dog bed suggestions for old, arthritic greyhounds? My boy Goober turns 14 in February and lately he's been having trouble getting comfortable, assumingly from arthritis. He's always liked soft beds but I worry he's having trouble getting up and is uncomfortable. He likes to lay in our living room and we have hard wood floors so I need something where it's non-slip and not easy for him to scoot onto the floor. I'm thinking a memory foam dog bed with bolsters would be good, but I'd love to hear everyone else's suggestions. I've never had such a old greyhound before, I'm so blessed that my best buddy is sticking around and I want to make him as happy and comfortable as he can be!
