Hosting overnight guests: pillows
We have a guest room with a new queen mattress. We're on a bit of a budget since we are now living in a bigger place, have a baby, etc. We spent a lot of money on the mattress and bought a couple of extra pillows. But pillows are kind of pricey. Husband has one pillow and I have two. Then we have two guest pillows. We are now hosting my inlaws and they are complaining about the pillows... They said we should have provided two each. I had no idea and I'm embarrassed. I gave them my extra pillow since they are the guests, but that's still only three pillows on the guest bed. Did I mess up? They have never stayed overnight at our place before. Our last apartment was smaller and we only hosted friends on an air mattress...

Complaining about pillows when someone lets you stay at their home for free is poor etiquette. If you have a sore back or neck or you're just a person who needs a specific kind of pillow or finds that most pillows aren't adequate for you, you bring your own when you travel (I'm one of them).

u/Rare-Progress5009 7d ago
They’re super-rude to complain, but personally i have two pillows per guest. It’s not an etiquette fail to only have one though!
12
u/detentionbarn 7d ago
And if so, they wouldn't need to be top-shelf pillows. The 2-packs at COstco are plenty good and reasonably priced.
59
u/EmberOne1 7d ago
Keeping the guest bed slightly uncomfortable prevents people from overstaying their welcome.
10
u/Binks977 7d ago
We keep a wonky air mattress for my MIL if she wants to stay overnight. She complained last time. Hasn't stayed since. It's been a couple of years...boom!
10
u/crawlen 7d ago
Haha generally I want to be welcoming but if I'm feeling petty... Maybe I'll get a couple more pillows but only put them out for the guests I like.
4
u/Boogity2024 7d ago
I think they need to be demoted to air mattress. Clearly they are not appreciating what you are providing, so provide less.
5
u/According-Paint6981 6d ago
Get the $5-6 pillows from target. They’re awesome for a few nights, then they deflate.
2
u/runnergirl3333 5d ago
If someone you know has a Costco membership, go with them. There’s lots of great bedroom pillows to choose from.

u/Batter-up4567 7d ago
So tacky on your in laws part.
21
u/travelfam3 7d ago
THIS the pillows at my in laws are the literal worst and I would never dare say anything. I complain privately to my husband and suck it up lol
29
u/catlogic42 7d ago
Inlaws should have bought you a couple of extra pillows to help out
11
u/FrabjousD 7d ago
Yup. My sister had terrible pillows that actually hurt my neck. I simply ordered one from Amazon and told her I just needed a particular pillow. It was nonsense but she believed me, or pretended to. And she wasn’t broke. Never make a host feel bad.
1
19
u/Ok-Hovercraft-9959 7d ago
When my sister’s in laws came to visit, they ordered a new mattress to be delivered to their house for the guest room (they checked in before hand and my sis and BIL were happy to receive it) because they knew the current mattress would cause issues for their back. To complain about it to your face is so tacky on their part.
19
u/Tinkerbell_98 7d ago
Honestly they could just go buy some pillows if they require more. That is what I would do. I see them at Ross and TJ Max all the time.

13
u/SVAuspicious 7d ago
Two each would be nice but one each is not rude. Complaining when one is a guest is rude.
I've bought some very decent pillows at Target at low prices. We bought some for our guest bed and a sofa bed. I tried them in our bed and liked them enough to replace my regular ones with more of the same. My wife has more bougie pillows she likes but I like my Target ones better.
I do a lot of offshore sailing. More than once I've used my duffle bag as a pillow so perhaps my expectations are low.
6
u/crawlen 7d ago
We go camping a lot and stuff our sleeping bag sacks with clothes to use as pillows, so my standards are pretty low too haha

u/I_dont_like_bubbles 7d ago
I’m just sitting here wondering what kind of ridiculously privileged people in this world are getting upset about not having more than one pillow. How embarrassing for them.

How many pillows does the local hotel have? I'd tell them to go find out.
I mean, if they're ballsy enough to criticize the amount of pillows, I'd just say "I bet the local Quality Inn/Hilton, etc. has plenty of pillows? You want me to get you their phone number?".
I've learned to shut that ish down or it never ends. This will only be the beginning.
3
u/Relevant-Principle31 6d ago
Exactly lol. Like their fckin audacity is wild. I would've directed them to a hotel too. "Ppl treat you how you allow them to treat you."
19
u/BBG1308 7d ago edited 7d ago
I generally always have two bed pillows per guest and appreciate the same when I'm a guest. That being said, I'd never, EVER complain to my host if I only had one pillow. If I wanted hotel service and to be able to complain, I'd get out my credit card and pay for a hotel. Your guests have some nerve. Just smile and refer them to your husband when they complain. "Gosh I'm so sorry you had an uncomfortable night. I'll be sure to let (husband) know and you're welcome to do the same." Are you a woman? If yes, kind of sexist of them to assume that household things are your responsibility rather than talking to their own damn son.
TL/DR: You didn't mess up.
P.S. If you or someone you know has a Costco membership, they have two-packs of pretty good quality pillows for around $15-$20 for the two-pack. If they plan to visit more often once the baby arrives, maybe they should buy the pillows they prefer. You can offer to store them in your guest room. LOL.
8
u/Jitterbug26 7d ago
I just bought a pack of 2 Serta cooling pillows at Ross for $17.99.
1
u/honestbeliever9201 7d ago
Oh I did too because it is so hot right now where I live. I love them and don't know why I didn't buy one years ago :)
9
u/Alternative-Suit5925 7d ago
Your etiquette is just fine. They could have brought their own pillows. Not everyone uses more than one.
13
u/Additional-Fish-4064 7d ago
You did not mess up. Id tell them they're welcome to buy pillows that they like to keep at your home.
7
u/voodoodollbabie 7d ago
You did not mess up. Walmart has pillows for $3.44 each. Probably just right for guests whom you don't want to stay long, like your in-laws.
6
u/No_Sorbet_5102 7d ago
Had the asked for an extra pillow that would be an OK request. However to state that you SHOULD have provided two pillow each is rude and breaks guest etiquette. There is no pillow rule. However, there is a a rule about being gracious to someone who shares their house with you and THEY broke the rules.
5
u/FishingWorth3068 7d ago
I was in this situation when I had my first. We were broke and trying to outfit a house. My mom just went to the store and bought pillows, comforter set and a mattress cover. It would have been cruel of her to criticize me at that point. Your parents are rude.
4
u/Classic-Phase-4589 6d ago
Rude behavior. I’m offended for you. There are medical/orthopedic reasons that some need 2 pillows. Hit up Marshall’s/Ikea/Target for 2 extra but inexpensive ones.
Enjoy your baby….I hope they are better grandparents than they are houseguests!
4
u/Relevant-Principle31 6d ago
How rude and nasty to complain about not having 2 pillows. Personally, I'd kindly instruct them to book a hotel during their next visit.
4
u/starchy2ber 7d ago
They are being very rude.
You are not being a bad host by not having a pillow menu...
6
u/megslikescrolling 7d ago
Hmmm seems they’re the poorly mannered people. They know all this stuff and they should have just gone and bought more pillows. Wouldn’t it be a nice housewarming gift to spring for a set of bedding including comforter sheets and pillows. You’re fine. They on the other hand are rude enough to not host at your home again.
5
u/Electric-Sheepskin 7d ago
I guess I'm going to take a slightly different tack than most people commenting, because while I do think in general it is poor etiquette for a guest to complain, I also think that any good host would be horrified to know that their guest was uncomfortable the entire time they stayed, so I think it's OK for a guest to politely inquire about things that might alleviate discomfort, especially if they will be a repeat guest, like with family.
That said, no, you didn't mess up. We often provide guests the things that we ourselves would like to have, and it just takes a little experience to consider all the things that someone might need. With pillows, I like to provide two per guest, one firm and one squishy, to give them options. You can pick up some fairly inexpensive ones at any big box store, though the cheaper ones will get flat pretty quickly. If they're only used for the occasional guest, though, they may last quite a while.

u/OldMove3348 7d ago
Your in laws suck. Do you know what’s rude? To complain to new parents about not having extra pillows.
I’m sorry.

2
u/InnerChildGoneWild 7d ago
I know a lot of people travel with their pillows, my husband and I among them, and I can't remember a time that I've ever had guests use my pillows because they had their own. One pillow a piece seems fine to me!
2
u/AngieEdson 7d ago
They should be thankful that you’re providing them a place to stay. Maybe they should buy their own pillows and leave them at your place.
2
u/sleepybobeepy22 7d ago
Tacky for them to complain. They can buy or bring their own if picky.
But, you can buy a pillow for less than $10 at target. I’d just go grab a couple cheap ones and let that be.
2
u/Creative_Platypus707 7d ago
I travel with my pillow because I'm a fussy b. How very rude of your in laws to tell you what you should have provided. Would have been nice if they had offerred to go out and buy you a couple of nice extra pillows for the spare bed.
You did the best you could do. I assume you were also run off your feet with the cooking and cleaning while they were there and you were also looking after the baby. Unbelievable.
2
u/Comfortable_Sea_717 7d ago
If they want an extra pillow they can go buy one ffs. I would. My parents would have. SMH at them even mentioning it.
2
2
u/Bright_Notice8405 6d ago
I would never take issue with one pillow per guest. This seems like such a first world expectation. Not only that, I take my own pillow whenever I can because have neck issues and find most pillows uncomfortable. I don’t ever need more than one in the bed unless I’m at home. Bizarre complaint.
2
u/Emily_Postal 6d ago
They are really rude. FYI HomeGoods in the US usually sells two pack pillows for a reasonable price.
2
u/Senior_Bat4271 6d ago
They could have brought one of their own if they are picky pillow people or buy some extras while they are there for you. They should be helping- how rude.
2
u/MelancholicEmbrace_x 6d ago
You didn’t mess up. Your guests are incredibly rude. Let your husband deal with his parents.
2
u/Glittering_Row_2931 6d ago
They should go out and buy nice pillows as a present instead of complaining. What kind of guest does that? What kind of guest accepts the hosts personal pillow because they want two. That’s so weird and I think would permanently put me off these relatives.
2
u/linnea_elaine 6d ago
how I wish I could give you some of the extra pillows what seem to multiply in my house.
Ideally, two pillows per person for a guest bed (of different thicknesses) would be great. But your budget is your budget and you get to spend money how it works for you. And it’s not my place as your guest to make you feel bad about it.
At my son’s house, I’m really the only one who uses the guest room. They’ve made it nice, but I needed some hooks and a lighter blanket. I just asked if it was okay to get some things to leave in the room. I would never demand that they meet my specifications on bedding.
2
u/account-able19 5d ago
I have never been given a comfortable pillow at someone's house and I have never complained.
2
6
u/Sensitive-Club-6427 7d ago
You should have more pillows than that.
But it is very tacky for them to even mention it, much less complain or criticize you.
Most parents / in-laws would buy pillows in this situation as a “gift.”
4
u/mostly_lurking1040 7d ago edited 3d ago
This is the right answer. You come home with pillows and say they were such a goodbye. You couldn't resist. Or you buy pillow saying that you were such a fusspot you have to have these for your neck and then you're going to leave them for next time.
3
u/Relevant-Principle31 6d ago
No they shouldn't have had more pillows. You only have 1 head! I guess it would've been nice to have more, but its not a requirement nor is it a hotel room.
Imo, it's such a nonsensical + entitled mindset to say someone "should" have 2 pillows per houseguest.
1
u/Sensitive-Club-6427 6d ago
Well, in that case; no pillow at all is required. A blanket can be folded as a pillow. Clothes can substitute as a pillow. OR no pillow at all.
But basically, in the US, if there is an adult bed, it has more than a pillow.
OP said they were on a budget. Fair enough.
A parent or an in-law, would gift them the pillows. NOT complain or criticize.
6
u/I_dont_like_bubbles 7d ago
No, one pillow each is fine. This is such a ridiculous first-world privilege kind of nonsense issue.
0
u/Brilliant_Second_456 6d ago
I get really bad neck pain from just one night with a too-low pillow. I usually need 2 thin ones, but in a pinch one thick one will do. Having said that, I would probably find a way to discreetly solve the problem, like grabbing a throw pillows from the sofa. But an uncomfortable night's sleep is hardly a champagne problem.
4
u/OreganoOfTheEarth 7d ago
How rude of them. My FIL did this. We had 6 pillows (2 of 3 different kinds) on the guest bed, but he complained that all of them were terrible. "The worst pillows ever created." I said, "Ok, I can replace them. What kind would you like, if these don't work." He said, "I don't know. Anything but the ones you have now." Like that helps.

u/SilentRaindrops 6d ago
I am going to go against most of the people here and loose a lot of karma. Most beds are set with two pillows per person. If you think back to any hotels you have stayed in, they have two per expected person. Drs suggest you keep your head a bit propped up to reduce acid reflux. I put the more supportive and expensive pillow under the cheap top pillow.
4
2
u/Traditional_Car_8219 7d ago
They could have McIvered something instead of being critical. Maybe wait a while before you invite them or suggest that they bring one or two pillows to add to yours when they come to visit.
2
u/OkPickle2474 7d ago
They’re rude to complain.
You have what you have. You just upgraded your home. It’s not normal to immediately furnish a whole home.
2
u/GirlinLondon96 7d ago
You know where people can get more pillows on demand if needed and there are usually two already available per guest? At a hotel. Maybe that’s where your in-laws should be.
1
u/Embarrassed-Ad-5005 7d ago
In laws are aholes. But you can get a 2 pack of Amazon pillows for $20 overnight delivery

Get some super cheap pillows at TJ Maxx for them next time. Or the cheapest ones you can find on Amazon.

u/StructEngineer91 6d ago
Personally I am picky about pillows, but when I am visiting family (or traveling anyway via car) I will throw my pillows in the car with me.
I do provide at least 2 pillows each, we also have extra pillows (including decorative ones) so lots of options for guests to choose from. But I don't think it is rude to only have one pillow each, if you are that picky as a guest bring your own (or go out and buy another one if you forgot "your" pillow).

If they’re going to complain about your hosting, they can stay elsewhere next time. Beyond rude, you’re not obligated to host, and there is no rule about amount of pillows. Not everyone uses more than one, and you provided what was in your budget at this time.
It’s pillows, you have a tight budget and a baby. If they’re that worried about it, they can buy them for you, or, if they want to be particular, they can stay elsewhere.
Btw, if you do end up buying more, I’d keep it as one each if you allow them to stay again. It’s what they deserve.
1
u/MisterVee321 6d ago
Well, it's nice to have extra pillows available, but "should have" is going too far. There's a gazillion kinds of pillows and some work perfectly fine without costing all that much.
I'm reminded of a quote from Kyle Kinane: "Pillows are sponges that soak up the memories of your nightmares."
1
1
u/CeilingCatProphet 6d ago
Pillows are not $$$. Many people need 2 pillows because of pains and aches.
1
u/ItsJustLobster 6d ago
I like two pillows (really helps for back and neck pain) and provide that for guests. The bottom one can be cheap AF. The top one should be decent. No need to be embarrassed. I’d just get some cheapos for the next time.
1
u/NellyNellB 6d ago
I always assumed two pillows per pwrson was ‘standard’ however - ive stayed at friends where fir some reason either the pillows they had were just uncomfortable or there was only one -
i politely ask if theres an alternative - if not and theres only one pillow - my trick is to use a towel folded up under it -
i do this in hotel rooms when two pillows are too high and one isnt high enough - fold a towel to the height you need and voila

1
u/Ecofre-33919 6d ago
Put pillows in the guest room - but they just need to be good quality - not the expensive ones you have.
Take your pillow back. Send your husband to get some pillows at Walmart!
1
u/wawa2022 5d ago
Get a pillowcase and shove some dirty clothes in it. Give it to them as an extra pillow. The nerve!
1

1
u/donchyaknownowbobby 5d ago
Did they ask how many pillows you had before they came? I would never assume someone has extra for me unless I confirmed it first. If they need two pillows to sleep, they should’ve asked if they should bring a pillow.
1
1
u/Floater345 5d ago
As others have said, they're being incredibly rude. You're going to stay in someone's home then complain about not having two pillows each? Really?
If this ever happened with me, my in laws would 100% go and buy a few more pillows. They wouldn't even think to utter a single complaint.
1
u/mickchick12 4d ago
Just a tip - I always travel with an extra pillowcase in my bag. If needed, i can put some clothes, towels... whatever would work, and have a makeshift pillow.
1
u/IllBase8735 4d ago
I have heard the two pillow thing. You always get two pillows at a nice hotel.
You asked if you messed up though - no, I don’t think so. You’re learning! Say thank you for telling me, we will consider that for the future. That’s my go to strategy for unsolicited comments from older generations.
I don’t have a guest room but I’ll remember this post when I get one eventually! My MIL would totally say something along these lines. I feel where you’re coming from OP. Don’t be embarrassed.
1
u/ThisIsMyNannyAcct 4d ago
I get cheap pillows at Costco so it’s not expensive.
I offer a variety, though. I have some with simple polyfill and some with memory foam on my guest bed so my guests can mix and match what they need. This allows them to find a comfortable position, have one for between their knees if needed, etc.
I also provide a few different options for blankets so, again, they can mix and match what works best for them. We all have different preferences and needs. What’s comfy for me may not be for others.
1
u/okileggs1992 4d ago
hugs, they are complaining because they can. That is it, if you had the right pillows they would complain. If they want diferent pillows they can bring their own or buy them.
1
1
u/Racefan6466 3d ago
It’s rude of them but if you want to get more for next time…they are really cheap at Walmart. Get them that and they can bring their own if that’s not good enough.
1
u/noseyhorselady 3d ago
You have what you have. Also if you are picky about pillows then you bring your own
1
u/Old-Courage584 3d ago
Dude, Amazon some decent inexpensive pillows for the guest room. And get yourself an extra pillow to put between your knees. Your back will thank me.
I sleep with three. I cuddle one by wraps by my arm around it. I have one under my head. I have one between my knees. I’m particular. So, I BRING MY OWN PILLOW(s) so ensure I have my 3

u/EducationalQuote287 2d ago
Do you have throw pillows on your couch? When I’ve stayed with people and there aren’t extra and I’ve felt I need support, I always look out on the couch instead of bothering my hosts. So, maybe see if they would be ok with a throw pillow. They can put it under their bed pillow to prop up.
1
1
u/Both-Section-9481 2d ago
Go to Walmart I think you can get a couple of pillows for 10 bucks. If anybody wants something else they need to bring their own from home.

Never heard of the need for two pillows. You might give people the choice of feathers vs foam and that means two pillows but it’s the choice, not the count, that matters.

You are not the NTA here. I run a motel and people that really need extra pillows Call up and let me know in advance. Last time I suggested one of those back and armrest pillows To keep the extra pillows from sliding and they said that would be fine.
3 days before they arrived they called back to let me know they didn't need any extra pillows because they'd gone out and bought one of those things for the trip and it worked perfectly.
Point being your in-laws owed you that much courtesy at least, And if they really need it, they should be supplying their own instead of taking yours!
But I will say it's nice to have shams and extra pillows in the guest bedroom just because you might want something on the couch too at some point
1
u/bluart06 7d ago
Does your guest bed have foam in it? If so ,a single standard pillow often isn’t going to fly, especially for back sleepers. As soon as we switched to a hybrid mattress with foam in it I had to go out and immediately buy a freaking $150 pillow because a standard pillow was too flat for back sleeping. With that said, I like to offer at least 2-3 pillow options per guest. Especially since I know side sleepers sleep best with 2-4 pillows (head, between knees, under waist for hourglass bodies, then one pillow in front of torso to rest upper arm on).
Costco or homegoods are good places for cheaper pillows.
Their comment may have been more helpful than rude, it’s ultimately up to you on how you react.
1
u/GrapefruitUpper6770 7d ago
I’d suggest a nearby hotel that will have anything their heart desires. You are not a hotel or air bnb!!! You have enough to worry about with a baby! I’m surprised they won’t stay with you with a baby- it’s a major inconvenience.
1
u/Odd_Obligation_1300 6d ago
Hotels usually provide two pillows per side of the bed.
Generally speaking, the older your guests are, the more likely they need an extra pillow for under their knees.

u/ophelia69 7d ago
Your in-laws suck and your husband needs to grow a pair and stand up to them. Don't like the pillows in the FREE room we went into debt to buy, then furnished with yet more money, just so you ingrates could have a comfortable, private place to sleep in our home? BY ALL MEANS avail yourselves of the nearest hotel, where I'm sure the front desk staff will care oh-so-deeply about your pillow complaints. /s
Anyway, you might want to check out r/raisedbynarcissists or similar subs - their behavior goes well beyond poor etiquette, and this type of stuff is never an isolated incident. You should NOT have given up your own personal pillow for your husband's parents, and the more you accommodate them (and possibly him) the more they will take from you. You just had a baby FFS. YOUR comfort is more important than theirs.
My extremely hardcore two cents. I've just seen this type of shit WAY too much. Please, stand up for yourself and set boundaries NOW before these people keep walking all over you by making what you seem to think are "reasonable" demands that you are "embarrassed" about. THEY should be embarrassed for being rude, entitled guests.

I offer my guests a full pillow menu mix of shapes and sizes. Pillows are not expensive
2
u/stinkpotinkpot 7d ago
Sorry you're being down voted!
Of course it is rude to make such comments when folks are hosting you. Next time they'll know and bring their own pillows. I often travel with my own pillow.
That said I just added two buckwheat hull pillows to our guest room. So there are two feather pillows, two thin poly pillows, two sturdy those memory foam or whatever pillows, and two buckwheat. We keep only four on the bed and direct guests to the extra blankets and pillow options in the closet. We also ask before folks arrive what sorta sheets do they prefer...sateen, cotton plain weave, linen, or flannel.
But this is my dream guest room and we are retired...a young family, come on!
1
u/aromagoddess 7d ago
Basic pillows are under $10 in NZ
1
u/stinkpotinkpot 7d ago
Basic pillows are inexpensive here too. But and also most are treated with weird, I don't wanna suck that in all night while I sleep, anti-microbial stuff. So. Sure there are many cheap pillows.
It was cheap to buy buckwheat hulls in bulk like a 20# was a enough for four bed pillows plus my travel pillow. I made simple case for all of them. Much cheaper than buying ready made.
I suppose I feel for our guests as I can tolerate almost any bed...if there's a decent pillow. Domestic travel I bring my own pillow and I even have pillows two places that I visit often so I don't have to haul one.
Back to the post though, I think it's tough to host these days as there's all sorts of expectations that someone's spare room be outfitted like it's an AirBnB. That's a lot for many folks. We didn't have luggage racks for years so I could imagine someone sighing that there wasn't a good place for their bag. We did have two chairs instead but...they were chairs and not luggage racks but they worked fine...glad we didn't get any complaints on that!

Two pillows per person is standard.
Costco has two packs of pillows that are a fantastic price.

u/Sunny-Bell102 7d ago
It was rude of your guests to mention not having enough pillows - unless you asked. I personally offer 2 pillows per person. I like an extra pillow myself so I assume that’s what other people like, too.
The first time I visited my daughter and her husband the only pillow on my bed was an old blanket rolled up and stuffed in a pillowcase. It was hard as a rock and smelled like gym shorts. I wound up saying something bc it was killing my neck and I couldn’t sleep.
4
u/Sudden_Throat 7d ago
Why didn’t you just go buy yourself a pillow??
0
u/Sunny-Bell102 7d ago
I said something. Did you miss that part?????? I was in another state without transportation.
1
u/Sudden_Throat 7d ago
Yes I did indeed read that you said something, obviously. You said it was rude of the in laws to do it to OP and yet you did it and that’s okay? Surely you could’ve ordered pillows on Amazon and sent them to your daughter’s house.
0
u/squeebs555 7d ago
I add a few toddler pillows to the guest bed. Fills the gaps that people need gapping.
0
u/KittensMom 7d ago
Are you a Costco, Sam's Club or BJs member? They have pillows 2 for 12 or something like that. Always. That's where I get mine. Good brands like Sealys.
0
u/sausagephingers 7d ago
So rude to complain! When I was getting my kid set up in their dorm in NYC this year, the Target had standard/queen pillows for $3.50 each. Send those folks that way.

"OH so sorry, the local Motel 6 is a 15 drive down the main drag here in town. We'll meet you at the IHOP for brunch! 😁"

Why is this downvoted lol. That’s the rule at my house. Don’t like my hospitality? Don’t like or appreciate staying for free? Then you can stay somewhere else!

Two per guest would be nice. But they are so rude to complain.
They are supposed to suck it up and/or do the parental thing of being like, oh let me gift you a couple pillows, which I'll happen to enjoy while I'm here.
