General Debian Question How should I get started in the world of Linux?

I’m just starting out in the world of Linux and decided to begin with Debian; I’ve never used anything other than Windows in my life, and I’d like to start learning and really get into computing. What do you recommend?

When you guys check for updates do you go to the software GUI, use the terminal, or have auto updates set up?

I always open the terminal and do the good ol' apt update upgrade, because it feels like a daily ritual for me. I remember when I first started using linux in 2013 or so and that's how I've always done it

General Debian Question 6K & 8K video editing

Just ordered a Nikon R6 III body for 6K video recording of martial art.. training, sparring, competition fights, open hand and weapon forms. Karate, BJJ, Muay Thai competition. Grabbed a Tamron 28-75 F2.8 lens as I’ll be 4-30 feet away usually and can move around as well.

I’m fully Debian.. for decades. Can i process the 6K video and grab frame captures are will I need to create a Windows 10 VM for initial processing?

I’d like to offload the cards directly to my NAS and process from there. 10GbE networking.

Been out of photography and was never really into videography and first time moving above 4K. Any help, tips and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: I’m considering 6K N-RAW Normal quality 60 fps video for competition. This is where I’m unsure if ffmpeg works or not. I was reading this still requires DaVinci Resolve to initially process. I’d use 4K H.265 10-bit 60 fps for training and sparring video which I know ffmpeg works fully.

Which kernel module is cloud-amd64 missing for kmscon?

I am currently testing kmscon on forky. It seems to run and switch fine, both between instances of itself and to/from fbcon, when forky runs on its generic/default linux-image-amd64 kernel(s).

On the other hand, for my lightweight VMs, I prefer running linux-image-cloud-amd64. Here, roughly 3 out of 5 times, switching to kmscon causes it to freeze up. Sometimes switching back to a default fbcon/agetty console from a frozen kmscon will freeze all ttys (whether they run fbcon or kmscon). The same applies after reboot if I try disabling [getty@.service](mailto:getty@.service) and enabling [kmsconvt@.service](mailto:kmsconvt@.service). If I install and boot into a build of linux-image-amd64 (instead of -cloud-amd64) on that very same guest VM, the problem seems to disappear completely. Boot back into -cloud-amd64, and it returns.

When I provoke the issue, kmscon itself outputs the following line in kmsconvt@$tty.service and syslog:

Error: video_fbdev: cannot get finfo (9): Bad file descriptor

...followed by repeated lines of:

Warning: terminal: cannot swap display [fbdev] -22

dmesg does not indicate any complaints from the kernel side. I know kmscon is a userland program, but thought I'd check anyway since switching from/to default fbcon is part of it.

I have unsuccessfully tried playing around with options like --no-drm and --no-mouse.

I suspect there is at least one required kernel module which - depending on how Debian's cloud kernels are built - either can be loaded with kmod/modprobe or is missing entirely. The project's own documentation does not seem to specify which kernel modules it needs, and although I can diff linux-header files for cloud vs. generic kernels as much as I want, that by itself will not get me any further without knowing what to look for.

Does anybody know where I can look to figure out which kernel module(s) that I am missing?

This will probably turn out to be out-of-scope for the cloud kernels, but since I like kmscon and would enjoy also using it in my lightweight cloud VMs, I thought it might be worth asking anyway, and possibly submit a wishlist bug if it seems more or less reasonable.

Thanks.

gitlab.gnome.org/world/bazaar is where i'm looking... am I dense or going the wrong way.

Does badblocks do something? HDD

Gnome Disks says that drive has 367 bad sectors, not sure if it is the USB adapter I use or it was like that, might try it internally with the SATA cables to see if it makes a difference.

Anyway, not sure if I'm just wasting time here, should I just trash the drive? It was my ancient OS, seems it has run time of over 4 years, currently used as a backup drive (same backup as other files, so even if this fails, I still have others) idk, never trashed a storage before, feels... Wrong? Never lost data as well, so kinda lost on the procedure.

Maybe it should be used as an "USB Stick"? Or the unreliability is just that bad?

I moved from Arch to Debian, i don't know so much how debian works but they say it is stable. I'm done experimenting with Arch Linux since i dont want to fuck my disk. I have experience with Mint so it's relatively familiar.

Getting New Software on Debian Stable (Video)

Thumbnail youtube.com
7 Upvotes

Hello! I've been a Debian stable user for years, and I wanted to show a simple video about how I compile new software for use on Debian stable. This is geared to people that are intermediate Debian users. Compiling software can be a lot of fun, but many times, it can be intimidating. This hopefully provides a good launching off point.

I note this in the video, but as a disclaimer, compiling software for production use is only recommended if you know what you're doing and know which flags to use for a successful build. I may make a video sometime in the future about how to do that.

Hope you enjoy this! Let me know what I can change and if you would like more of these videos :)

Debian Stable Question Alder Lake-N audio broken after upgrade from Bookworm to Trixie

I've just upgraded my home server (Atom N100 board) from Bookworm to Trixie, and now I'm struggling to get analog audio working again. Perhaps someone here can point me in the right direction.

The card itself is recognized, lspci reports
00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Alder Lake-N PCH High Definition Audio Controller
Subsystem: ASRock Incorporation Device 3897
Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel, snd_soc_avs, snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl

inxi tells me that no driver is attached (N/A)

dmesg shows the device probe is pending..
pci 0000:00:1f.3: deferred probe pending: snd_hda_intel: couldn't bind with audio component

I don't have much experience in debugging this kind of hardware-related issues. Poking around on the Internet told me that "the driver may have to wait for another component to finish initialization, like the i915 HDMI audio" - is there a way to verify this? I had the i915 blacklisted since Deb11 because it caused kernel freezing on the Atom N100 boards (and it's a headless machine anyways, so I don't care about missing graphics drivers), and I can't find reliable info whether this bug has been fixed or not, so I'm not gonna unblacklist it right now. But since audio used to work fine on Deb11+12 with i915 blacklisted, I fail to see why it shouldn't work now.

I've tried removing pipewire and falling back on Alsa as I had it before, but that has no impact on the result (which makes sense if the kernel driver already fails to load).

General Debian Question (using minimal build) How on earth do I connect to internet???

I've been trying for the last hour or so to connect to the internet. I have an ethernet cable plugged in, but I still don't have internet. Literally nothing online is giving me anything remotely conclusive on how to set up internet, wired or wireless. I'm getting to my wits end with this, any help would be appreciated.

Community What is the best hardcover debian book? Its 2026 not 1999

I have been thinking about getting hardback book that is good for debian. Many of these books are older and might not be up to arm64 specs of the newer linux materials. I am really looking for something well rounded ubuntu/debian but mostly debian cause its lightweight.

"CONFIG_CMA is not set"; why?

I've been studying the throughput on my SDR (software defined radio). I found this test:

/usr/bin/iio_readdev -u ip:192.168.2.1 -B -b $((1024*1024*16)) cf-ad9361-lpc

with error message

ERROR: Open unlocked: -12
Unable to allocate buffer: Cannot allocate memory (12)

I can run the test with a smaller buffer, specifically

/usr/bin/iio_readdev -u ip:192.168.2.1 -B -b $((1024*1024*4)) cf-ad9361-lpc

I stuck with powers of two and

/usr/bin/iio_readdev -u ip:192.168.2.1 -B -b $((1024*1024*8)) cf-ad9361-lpc

also hits the memory limit. I have 96GB of dram and I can't even allocate 8M?

The CMA parameter can be set on grub. However you can

cat /proc/meminfo

and see that Cma isn't even used.

I found this test:

grep CONFIG_CMA /boot/config-$(uname -r)

yielding

# CONFIG_CMA is not set

There are instructions on how to enable CMA but my first inclination is if something is not a default, find out why.

Debian Stable Question Error trying to install Signal & Tuta via Flatpak on Debian.

I keep getting the issue that the app isn't isn't found in remote flathub.

"error: Nothing matches org.signal.Signal in remote flathub"

"error: Nothing matches com.tutanota.Tutanota in remote flathub"

At one point I accidentally installed a way to use Signal via CLI which is of course not what I'm looking for.

I have been able to install other apps via flatpak so it's not that it's not working at all. I tried to install both Signal and Tuta via flatpak regularly and via flatpakref files and neither option for either app worked.

The common issue is trying to use it on 32bit machines or arm machines and mine is neither. I have multiple computers but the one I'm wanting to have everything installed via flatpak (for the sandboxing) on is a Thinkpad T480. With how popular these are I'm a little surprised to be running into this issue.

General Debian Question Automatic brightness control for Debian 13 and XFCE?

Hello all! Got a laptop and I'm running Debian 13 and XFCE on it. Can anyone provide advice for implementing automatic brightness control? That was a nice feature that worked for this laptop on Windows and I'm hoping to enable it for Debian as well. Thanks!

EDIT: This is based on using the light sensor. I'd like to open up the laptop and not have it so bright I wake up the person next to me.

Anyone knows why with BleachBit after using these browsers for, like, a day, there are so many differences in the numbers of things to be cleaned?

Firefox ESR/Firefox/LibreWolf: 40 MB
Google Chrome: 80 MB
Chromium: 800 MB (!)
Brave Origin: 1.5 GB (!!!)

These are the numbers after using only one of these browsers on the same day.
