There's no way to me that Lumity (Luz/Amity) wasn't based at least a little on Diakko, like cmon

9

u/Ok_Branch2469 8h ago

Dana Terrace used to draw race swapped Diakko art which apparently slowly evolved on Tumblr into what would be prototype versions of Luz and Amity. So yes, directly the main inspiration.

3

u/Judgmentos 7h ago

Makes total sense. I'm a Diakko shipper and when I watched TOH for the first time I clocked it immediately. Love that for her

13

u/gramathy 8h ago

Also all of the Owl House

-6

u/Zoolifer 7h ago

Owl house has the automatic debuff of being a cartoon man, same with any alternatives being pointed out here "real" media has actors and shit, cartoons are for kids. That's the thinking of an average film critic and imo an average movie going/ cable watching audience.

6

u/The_Pastmaster 5h ago

Ironic since HP is a books series for kids. XD

And fuck the people who keep pushing this trend

15

very annoying tbh. I hate it being pushed on every single media platform. Its not even a good one :/

Ew. No thanks.

Potterheads hate dogs 🫣

u/lepidopt-rex 10h ago

We have to keep saying it out loud.

JK Rowling harms people she doesn’t like using her obscene wealth and status.

53

u/EvilBrynn 11h ago

What proof do i send to my die hard fan mother and brother 😭

55

u/Im_Balto 10h ago

You could look up statements made by Rowling herself, advocating for taking up skirt photos of women in the bathroom if you suspect they may be trans.

She’s pretty disgusting if you listen to anything she says

23

u/Cosmic_Carp 7h ago

Reminder, transphobia hurts EVERYONE, not just trans people. Trans rights are human rights!

14

u/The_Pastmaster 6h ago

Dunno why the downvote, you're right. I've seen plenty of clips of women being harassed by other women thinking that they're trans.

7

u/Cosmic_Carp 6h ago

Looking back on my comment, it might've come across as slightly condescending? Or it could've just been a good ol' fashioned transphobe.

34

u/Practical-Cook5042 11h ago

There's a documentary coming out!

Jessie Gender made a good video as well (link: https://youtu.be/_GBUArD51KY)

-11

"why are you into that series but not any other, better young adult novel IPs? Why only the bigoted one?"

They're bigots.

23

u/Corvid187 11h ago

Ah yes, because I'm sure JK's bigotry was an important part of them forming an attachment to the series in the 1990s/2000s.

I get that JKs a TERF and HP shouldn't be financially supported, but this kind of facetious moral scolding is exactly the kind of advocacy that just turns people against whatever you're advocating for.

8

u/JaimiOfAllTrades Peepsus Christ 10h ago

Harry owns a slave. Hermione is treated as hysteric for wanting to end slavery.

Sure, her transphobia and transmisogyny aren't glaring in Harry Potter but bigotry is literally everywhere in it.

7

u/mistersnarkle 11h ago

Bro I’m trans and nonbinary and I met my best trans friend through Harry Potter fan fiction because we’re both deeply traumatized and autistic so I mean there are other options

3

u/Veryegassy 10h ago

It's not even that good a story. There's more holes in the worldbuilding and plot than a sieve, the writing is only comparable to half baked fanfiction and there's glaring bigotry, racist, antisemitic and otherwise, sprinkled throughout

2

u/BeastThatShoutedLove 2h ago

Shallow world building was one thing that prevented me from getting into HP originally. I still read the books because my mother tried to do the equivalent of buying the popular toy but for a child that was into books.

The fact that I thought the house elf plot would went towards grand change of the system by the end of the series and it went nowhere was second thing.Ā

Like what do you mean that child book was more okay with slavery and racism than some of the gritty fantasy books where they are one of expected tropes that show the world is shit?Ā

7

u/RedQueenNatalie 3h ago

Yep, this whole resurgence in discussing this character is just fuckin perverse. People want to chase that conversation but it also just fucking prolongs the whole issue of it all. Im tired.

33

u/mistersnarkle 11h ago

For anyone who can’t let Harry Potter go (hello fellow trans autists), please just read fanfiction by trans authors and don’t give her any money

29

u/AmazingScoops 10h ago

Continuing to engage with HP content, even fanfic, encourages others to continue engaging with official HP content. I respect your stance as an improvement, but you are still choosing to actively perpetuate the larger problem.

-10

u/mistersnarkle 10h ago

It’s harm reduction for people (many of them trans and/or autistic) who literally cannot let go of the world despite Knowing That, but experience extreme psychological stress at the idea of causing harm to others/their community.

I would also go so far as to say it can siphon off people/fans who would instead engage with the source material or new material from the author and bring them to a place where they can actively combat the issues in the source work that perpetuated that ideology and teach others to do the same in a completely free gift economy until they’re ready to leave the world entirely.

27

u/JaimiOfAllTrades Peepsus Christ 10h ago

Hi! Autistic trans woman here.

Autism doesn't mean you can't ever let go of anything. I let go of D&D and jumped ship to something better within the same genera.

I refuse to believe it's impossible to jump to a different book. I'm certain there's a fantasy novel series set in a magic school that's got much much better worldbuilding than shit like, "Actually the slaves like being slaves and the main character owns one. Also, the one character who has a problem with slavery is ridiculed for it because it's ridiculous to want to free slaves."

3

u/NoTransition8295 4h ago

Just thought I would ask, what did you switch to from dnd? Like pathfinder or something?

3

u/JaimiOfAllTrades Peepsus Christ 4h ago

I mean. Yeah, Pathfinder (first edition, then second).

But also just. There's so many, and I like running little one offs in them. Mutants and Masterminds is good, so is Cyberpunk Red, Reclaim the Wild is a fanmade Zelda TTRPG that I've had fun with. Suspense is cool. Ghostbusters International is an official Ghostbusters TTRPG and a fucking hidden gem as far as I'm concerned.

There's a whole world of TTRPGs made for different genres and franchises and it drives me up a wall how people act like D&D is the end-all be-all.

1

u/NoTransition8295 4h ago

Thats really neat, have you ever played vampire the masquerade? Thats one I've been interested in just because i thought of a fun concept for a character to play as

-2

u/mistersnarkle 6h ago

Which is why fanfiction criticizing that has artistic value (especially when written by trans people); for a lot of people it’s not about the magical school and world so much as it is about childhood trauma/imprinting on a book in childhood. We know it’s Not Good.

I’m not implying that being autistic means one can’t let go of things, but it does mean that there are potentially comfort objects (in your case potentially TTRPG) of which it is more difficult to switch to a different book (often without a fandom, because there aren’t many) than it is to revisit the literal mountain of historic fanfiction. Fandom is GENUINELY the last bastion of free content, and the last bastion of self published independent work.

6

u/AmazingScoops 10h ago edited 10h ago

There is no one who "literally cannot let go". It's a book series. One that gives profits to a genocidal maniac. Move on.

The issue with your stance is that it still ultimately brings people to the source material. If a kid is introduced to HP fanfic who otherwise wouldn't have looked into it for being Anti-Trans, they now are more likely to engage with the source material or buy merch. Every penny that simple cycle perpetuates is a penny that goes to trans genocide.

As an additional aside, research tells us that engaging with propaganda weakens our immunity to that exact propaganda. While it's true that being able to engage with the source material on an intellectual level so we can engage and improve our futures is a good thing, it's not true in an en-masse format like this, it only works in places like school study groups, and it continues to finance evil as long as the authors lives.

Edit: I'm sorry, I can't type today apparently.

-7

u/mistersnarkle 10h ago

How old are you? Because this may be an age thing — I’m talking about older people (Millennials) who have had to blast over their Harry Potter tattoos but have mental conditions (ADHD hyperfixations, PTSD comfort books, autistic special interests, etc.) that make it very difficult to ā€˜quit’, akin to an addiction; that’s specifically what I mean by ā€œliterally cannot let goā€, and what I mean by harm reduction.

I don’t think children are the primary audience for Harry Potter anymore, or the primary vector of cash, but instead families. If mom is comfortable getting her HP fix from fanfiction, maybe she doesn’t need to take the family to Harry Potter World.

Fanfiction is free, and doesn’t give money to the author. There’s no money to be made by the author there.

9

u/cnelsonsic 10h ago

Harm reduction means giving heroin addicts clean needles, not whatever gibberish you typed there to try to support your love for a terrible series written by a terrible person. If they just can't quit it, they need to go to therapy and not read more hp fapfic.

1

u/mistersnarkle 10h ago

it’s so funny that you think they’re not already in therapy, and that that somehow makes my point less salient. Also noticed you didn’t answer the age thing, so I’m going to assume you’re young.

Apply the pattern of giving clean needles to heroine addicts to pointing (older) people emotionally addicted to a series toward fanfiction written by trans authors instead; do you see the overlap?

Like. I’m fuckin’ trans and nonbinary, homie, can’t express how much I fucking hate That Bitch Joanne — but I definitely met my best friend (also trans) through HP fanfiction, and I don’t think either of us has contributed a penny since the first transphobic tweet?

10

u/cnelsonsic 10h ago

I was there when the old magic was written.

6

u/AmazingScoops 10h ago edited 10h ago

I'm reluctant to put my age or other demographic information over the Internet. Suffice it to say I am a flavor of queer, extremely neurodivergent, extremely traumatized, and old enough to have real world experience. I understand that it's difficult to quit. I get it super intimately. I've done it. It doesn't change anything.

You are probably right that's kids aren't the main target audience but are still a major part of the audience. What I said is also still true for families and adults. Most people are not politically engaged enough to be trying to mindfully learn from material or prevent harm. If they were, Trump wouldn't be president and Rowling would already be a historical conversation.

Edit: you added a bit to the end of your response there with an edit, so here's the response to that bit;

Fanfiction doesn't contribute money, but it still makes people excited about the product, which makes them more likely to purchase the actual product, or other products related to that product (costumes, birthday themes, movies, theme parks, video games...). We've been over this.

4

u/whydosereditexist100 9h ago

I'm copy pasting this in this same comment section

•

u/Deathaster 36m ago

Actively, too. Not "oh she donates to a conservative party who just happens to also maybe somehow harm trans people". Nope, it's her goal. She is absolutely proud of it.

-24

u/Feature_Minimum 11h ago

Definitely fuck her. But I don’t see harm in using/pirating her IP for our own entertainment, long as we don’t put any money towards her, which I don’t.

41

u/Nextorl 11h ago

it's keeping the IP alive and the demand high, which directly translates to money for her.

-12

u/CleoAir 10h ago

I'm afraid at this point without fanarts like this it would be as much relevant as with them. You can't cancel almost two decades of popularity, but also people won't suddenly start reading some books only because the genderbend version of one character is hot.

11

u/ScrubTheNerd 10h ago

You can stop contributing to it, though. That's the point.

-12

u/CleoAir 9h ago

My point is that Malfoid fanarts don't contribute to anything. Gooners draws pretty anime girls because they're pretty anime girls, they don't care about that franchise in that context and most people who'll see these fanarts wont care either besides "damn, that's pretty anime girl". This whole trend will die within a month anyway.

6

u/ScrubTheNerd 9h ago

They contribute to keeping HP relevant in the general zeitgeist without proper context. Any mention of Harry Potter should have this context, and any mention without it should be admonished.

25

u/cnelsonsic 11h ago

Because it's advertising.

10

u/QQBearsHijacker 10h ago

https://youtu.be/69bYmZWEs7k

I’ll leave this here for you. Jessie does a great job explaining why even pirating it doesn’t help

1

u/Feature_Minimum 6h ago

Oh cool, I’ll check it out. Cheers.

137

u/PsychologicalBid179 11h ago

Harry potter fans are so starved for chemistry they are gushing over a pretty bland tsundere

144

u/Malythria 10h ago

1st world problem:
ā€œOh no my harry potter fanficsā€ 🄺

Meanwhile:

Jk Rowling is a holocaust denier, leveraged her wealth to harm trans people, and is in the Epstein Files being chummy with that pedophile.

25

u/Educational-Pin8951 9h ago

Which is why I refuse to support any of her endeavors now… if only I had known then šŸ˜‘

15

u/Toorviing 8h ago

The other bits are obviously true but the Epstein connection isn’t really there. She’s evil for plenty of reasons beyond that.

71

u/Recidivous 11h ago

My friends and I came up with a reason why there were so little magical schools in non-Western countries. It's because it's very in-character for the British to create one centralized school for each region without any regards to the diverse and unique cultures in each one.

So naturally you get one Asian magical school that is meant to house every Japanese, Chinese, Korean, SEA, Polynesian, and South Asian into one school.

19

u/Confuseasfuck 11h ago edited 11h ago

The thing is that those arent the only schools, they are supposed to be the elite ones (yes, even with the high amount of routine child endangerment and almost death, hogwarts is a fancy elite school)

They have a bunch of smaller ones and people being homeschooled, it doesnt show up because the UK wizarding population is very small. Hogwarts has like, around 300 students and almost everyone is related in some way.

If anything, the real magic is how tf they didnt collapse under their own genetic bottleneck considering they hate both uk-born non witches, uk witches who are poor and foreign witches in general.

10

u/Ninja_PieKing 10h ago

I mean, it was very much a minor plot point that the Black family was suffering from inbreeding related health problems, both physical and mental.

5

u/Recidivous 11h ago

Reminds me of Clortho's from that Key & Peele skit.

3

u/Penguinmanereikel 7h ago

The scene of Clortho slamming the staff at the students throwing magic at each other in the hall always felt like something in-character for Filch to do if he wasn't a Squib.

"Now KNOCK IT OFF! All that stupid-ass, grab-ass, and touchy-feely bullshit. Goddamn. I toldja they was rotten!"

13

u/Rated_Oni 10h ago

I always liked to think that British wizards think that the rest of the world are like them, so of course they only have one school, no matter that the whole isles can fit in one state of US. My worldbuilding is that Ilvermorny is the school like Yale, not for the best but for the ones that pay the most, while the rest of the states have their own school, with the NCAA being more important than quidditch.

18

u/FriedChickenCheezits 4h ago

Slide 5 was me when I finally started looking into Harry Potter's treatment of Asian people. I never read HP, I've always been annoyed by it and then the annoyance was justified when JKR unmasked as an outright racist queerphobe. But back on topic, I'm mad that not only is the singular Asian magic school in Japan, it's on a tiny island right next to Iwo Jima. The entirety of Iwo Jima is considered a WWII memorial because of the sheer bloodbath that happened on that island because of the American push into the Pacific Theater and their allyship with local Filipino populations. Among the horrors committed were the mass deployment (every American platoon had one) of flamethrowers to clear out Japanese hiding spots, many of which were interconnected like anthills and were cemented over to prevent more soldiers from emerging. It's debated whether or not the battles were a scare tactic by American forces to turn Iwo Jima into a show of strength, especially since the image of soldiers pushing up an American flag is one of the most famous from WWII. After the war ended, Iwo Jima was 'gifted' back to Japan by the US but the people who used to live there were never allowed back. My dad is retired military who researched Iwo Jima as part of our history as Filipinos and it upsets me to no end that there's a super secret magic school for kids right next to Iwo Jima as the only option for magic Asian kids, along with conflating every Asian ethnicity as one. I know HP plays around with dark fantasy concepts but this is like building an art school besides an extermination camp. I don't know how British people are taught about world history but I can't imagine looking at Iwo Jima and thinking it's the singular best option to put a school for every Asian child ever.

10

u/FriedChickenCheezits 4h ago

This wound up longer than I thought whoops.

TL;DR: I'm passionate about history and JKR has an insane amout of disregard for recent Asian history by making the sole Asian magic school be a fictional location next to an island that is a whole memorial to WWII because of the 25,000+ people who died there under horrific conditions.

4

u/joethepenguin13 1h ago

There is absolutely no chance that thought was put into it beyond "I should put a magic school in Japan and it'll go over here" as a dart is thrown at a map. She's malicious in other ways but being this wound up at a perceived slight against Asians is insane.

1

u/Pokesabre 1h ago

As a (former) kid who came up through the British state school system, this is the first I've heard about Iwo Jima. When we covered WW2 in school the focus was almost entirely on the European theatre, with a bit of North Africa thrown in too because the conflict there was heavily tied in with the European theatre. My memory of what we were taught about the Asian theatre basically can be summed up as Pearl Harbour, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.

I also came up through the schools at least a decade after rowling, so I can't imagine her education being more detailed on the non-European portions of WW2. TO BE CLEAR, I am absolutely not defending her ignorance here - she wrote those books as an adult and absolutely should have done her research and exercised even a little common sense/compassion - I'm just explaining that the UK has an incredibly Euro-(and even more particularly Anglo)-centric view of WW2 in almost all discussions of it

53

u/re-charred 10h ago

I only recently found out that ā€œfoidā€ is an incel term. I hope this adds an extra layer to your ick.

6

u/rookie-mistake 2h ago

oh. huh. i was wondering how tf people got to malfoid as the feminized version of malfoy

i didn't even make the connection, i only learned about moid from the shen audrey comics

•

u/re-charred 2m ago

Yeah it’s kinda disheartening how incel speak is becoming so normalized recently. Even the recent something-maxxing trend feels surreal.

213

u/goldensabbath 11h ago

Why won't this fucking franchise just go away...

92

u/Corvid187 11h ago

Because it's popular, approachable, has a good adaptation to film, and timed the aging up of its narrative and characters to perfection, allowing readers from a wide age range to keep engaged with it as they developed their taste in fiction.

It's not high art, but I don't think it's difficult to see why it's enduringly popular

56

u/goldensabbath 11h ago

I am aware of these factors. It was a rhetorical expression of exasperation, not a legitimate question.

15

u/Corvid187 10h ago

Ah my bad, sorry! (>▂<)

-18

u/breckendusk 10h ago

Well, one day JKR will die, and the franchise will continue without her. It's a captivating world, even with all its problems. You may as well complain about Narnia or LotR, except this series came out at a time where its readers aged with the books AND it was modern, giving it explosive media reach that early 1900s novels could never touch. It even has dedicated theme park sections - which it got before even freaking Star Wars did (Star Tours as a standalone ride notwithstanding) and to my knowledge, is the only series that started as books to ever have done so. Since it sold so well, it's going to be revitalized generation after generation ad infinitum.

Hate JK, I get that. But you're wasting your breath and energy on the series.

11

u/goldensabbath 9h ago edited 9h ago

I logically understand that everything you're saying pretty much holds up, but that does nothing to alleviate the shit feelings I get whenever my eyes cross paths with HP stuff, which is bound to happen often, considering how popular it is.

Storytime about shit nobody cares about: loved HP as a kid. My family was too poor to buy the books, but I ate up the movies (pirated by one of my uncles) and, indeed, grew up alongside them. I was also a little nerdy kid in an abusive, negligent home, so yeah, fully bought into the fantasy. Turns out you don't feel like killing yourself so much when you have fiction to latch onto. Then, in high school, I got into other literature (horror stuff like Stephen King and Lovecraft, comic books, the like), and although I still liked HP it just kinda fell by the wayside. I moved on. Didn't help that I also began to find other franchises with what I considered to be more compelling fantasy settings.

Years go by, and suddenly the lady who wrote the entire thing turns out to be some kind of unhinged hater of trans people. I'm not trans, but a very dear friend of mine is: a trans guy, to be exact. Now, I know this lady's main axe to grind seems to be with trans women in particular, but really, I don't give a shit. She wants to hurt people like my friend, because they're like my friend. Given the chance, she would probably hurt him too. So yeah, it does upset me to see her overblown child literature gaining traction again. I would erase the entire fucking thing from existence if I could, if it meant no harm came to my friend. People are right to be angry at the legion of emotionally stunted, consumerist, brainless fucks who will continue to give money to someone funneling that into measures that will hurt an incredibly vulnerable minority.

I truly, legitimately hope her new series just fucking bombs and gets cancelled into oblivion. It very likely won't happen, as you say, but I fucking wish it would. I wish she would become poor again, in her old age. Perhaps then she'd remember what it felt like to be a scared, lonely, vulnerable person. Maybe she'd get some of her fucking soul back that way, if there's anything left there besides spite and privilege.

-5

u/breckendusk 9h ago edited 9h ago

Tbh this series might be the one media in recent memory that was hated both by liberals and conservatives for opposite reasons lol. On the liberal side some can't separate the art from the artist and hate it bc of JKR. On the conservative side some hate the added diversity. I personally don't like it because it feels so unnecessary (and JKR is a disappointment to child me) (I do think characters should have relatively consistent designs (see: Sonic) and am not a fan of shoehorned diversity for diversity's sake, preferring instead that new characters and stories are written with diversity included from the start, but while I think it's stupid I don't care that much). But it's definitely not going away any time soon (probably ever) so... I know there's that prayer or whatever about what you can and can't change. "Pick your battles." This one ain't worth it, just vote with your wallet and move on

6

On the other hand šŸ«“šŸ–•

-10

u/breckendusk 10h ago

I mean, be mad I guess? That's what's happening and going to happen. I'm not over here trying to make it happen lol I'm just saying there's no way it's going anywhere

You're here defending it so might as well give You this šŸ«“šŸ–•

Thank You! Nothing like a cis finger up my ass while I try to survive this shit show. Can't wait for all the commercials from HBO. Harry in every fucking window, app, juice box. It will be awesome.

3

u/breckendusk 10h ago

O... kay? Not sure why you'd call your own fingers cis sis but you do you. Dunno why you're mad at me for stating facts without even giving my opinion on the matter but I do appreciate your jumping to conclusions, it's a great way to get people on your side

→ More replies (0)

18

u/LHLanim 10h ago

It's more "why are cis people so shit about it"?

25

u/Corvid187 10h ago

Because for the vast majority of cis people the link between Harry Potter as a media property and TERF advocacy is pretty tenuous, while their emotional connection to it is pretty strong.

For most cis people trans issues are a fringe political concern with relatively low salience that they don't know much about, and aren't particularly interested in; not necessarily in any malicious way, but just that it isn't something particularly on their radar.

To explain to those people the chain that Harry Potter funds JK Rowling, and Jk Rowling funds advocacy that claims to be feminist but that is actually a guise for pushing to marginalised and expunge trans identities from society, and that advocacy has had real material impacts on law that have directly made the lives of trans people notably worse, to the point of driving some to harm or suicide, is at least 3 links too many for the average voter on such a marginal issue to them. Meanwhile, their attachment to harry potter as an IP is very clear-cut and strong, and usually has nothing to do with JKR as a person.

Humans in general aren't very good at dealing with the generalised abstract comsequnces their cumulative actions, and the link between Harry Potter and harm to trans people is much more abstracted than a lot of other harmful relationships people already engage in. They simply do not know about, or sincerely do not comprehend, that engaging with the IP does harm to trans people.

3

u/LHLanim 10h ago edited 10h ago

I mean, people know and they still don't care. Look at the Hogwarts Legacy situation. A lot of them know, just don't care. I know it's normal that people don't care if it doesn't involve them, but it makes me spiteful towards the whole fanbase. I feel like a giant, well maintained float is going over my head, crushing all my friends and family and cis people wagging wands on top of it trying not to look down.

Edit: What's Your Patronus Houses, cis bitches not liking this? Sussie and Johnny Downvote on their way to Askabarn šŸ–•

5

u/Corvid187 10h ago

I think it is very fair to feel that way

1

u/LHLanim 10h ago

Thank You ā™„ļø

3

u/WT_Duck1337 2h ago

What I hate about that situation with HL is that money was CLEARLY flexed behind the scenes with the massive Twitch campaign. Those ā€œbig nameā€ streamers just got a fat stack of cash to promote and play it, but would rather double down on ā€œseparating the art from the artistā€ instead of admitting they’re being paid to play HL.

1

u/Darq_At 1h ago

Because for the vast majority of cis people the link between Harry Potter as a media property and TERF advocacy is pretty tenuous, while their emotional connection to it is pretty strong.

Yes, we know, this is the "being crap about it" part.

-2

u/SethLight 10h ago

>and timed the aging up of its narrative and characters to perfection.

Which I think will be the thing that eventually kills Harry Potter. It grew up with an entire generation so they got super hooked, but intruding kids who can read/watch the whole thing is awkward.

46

u/whydosereditexist100 9h ago

JK Rowling uses her wealth to harm trans people.

55

u/Leadership-Life 10h ago

That’s definitely not the MAIN problem with malfoid. It’s inherently anti-trans and misogynistic. Foid is a manosphere turn. Fuck J.K. And any engagement with her writing and intellectual properties

60

u/Septembust 11h ago

what's also messed up is the idea that femfoy is still just draco malfoy, but a girl. That's pretty much it.

Hitler youth boy = 😠

Hitler youth girl = "she just has a crush on him"

Where's the fanart of dumbledore and harry being a good influence and guiding draco away from that bad crowd? Or snape seeing himself in draco and trying to steer him away?

I mean, I know the answer, but come on

17

u/Kagahami 11h ago

How far apart is this from bad boy glorification? I mean that's a past trend that still continues into today.

7

u/TheRedBirdSings 10h ago

Idk if it still is, but the TV Tropes name for bad boy glorification (and exaggerating the bad boy aesthetic of the character in the first place) actually used to be "Draco in leather pants".

6

u/caitlindrawings 7h ago

A lot of the gay harry + malfoy fan fiction involved a redeption/conversion arc for Malfoy were he realizes everything he was raised to believe is wrong. And his love for Harry is what made him break through the indoctrination and see the truth.

7

u/girlpersona 10h ago

On the Harry being a good influence on Draco part -

They definitely do have that covered in many Drarry online fanfics from what I remember šŸ˜… so accompanying art is likely out there

1

u/Feature_Minimum 9h ago

Well part of it is that Ginny Weasley wasn’t a great love interest and Malfoy being a decent foil doesn’t have much to do with him being a dude, so I think this works as a solid improvement.

13

u/Fatali 8h ago

Good: all the other people here correctly saying that Harry Potter needs to die as a mediaĀ

Bad: getting my algo poisoned

Worse:

I'm not safe at work.

My healthcare costs are skyrocketing because trans healthcare is getting fuckedĀ

I am desperately trying to find a job where I can feel safe in a state that I'm allowed to exist in.

If I have to move I'll have to choose my route carefully to avoid shitty states to be safe

All because of people like JKR and people she supports and donates to with her massive wealth that she gets from HP staying culturally relevant

I just want to feel safe.

Somewhere.

Hopefully sometime in my life.

Please.

11

u/LHLanim 10h ago

My only hope is that it will break in half between cattering to fascist edgy teens, old Christians and trying to be progressive (in a very corporate, safe way) that will tank this shit show and the Queen of Mold with it. I hope for a day where it's a shame to like this franchise and put pocket money into it.

23

u/SemperFun62 8h ago

I've been saying ever since this "trend" started, the whole thing is a deliberate chud/4chan backlash to Petra Parker.

Like, Petra was explicitly trans, while girl Draco is just AU genderbending. And of all the things it had to be a character from Queen terf?

It's as if they're trying"reclaim" any gender switching as AU fiction distinct from being trans. They just couldn't accept that reimagining a character as trans was popular, so are trying to take that away.

"See? People didn't like Petra as a popular trans character, they're just horny for any genderbent character. Oh, and what a coincidence, the character from the author actively working to exterminate you is *just as** popular.*

Is it a conspiracy theory? Sure, but considering Malfoid and the way chuds are celebrating I wouldn't be surprised.

57

u/Glassesnerdnumber193 11h ago

Let the Harry Potter franchise die

23

u/LibrarianZephaniah 11h ago

I never engaged with Harry Potter, so I can't really comment other than to say that enemies-to-lovers is and probably always will be super popular.

22

u/3rlk0nig 9h ago

Can this IP just die already ?

28

u/NockerJoe 11h ago

When you have an established setting even most laypeople understand it stops being about the story or the media and starts being about using that as a template. Thats how a lot of sci fi franchises get big by simply expanding outwards with expanded universes.

JK Rowling being a transphobe aside she also struggled to do this. She doesn't really play super well with other creators and WB has also used bottom dollar dev teams to make new games. Jam City Games tried to make a cute slytherin girl for Hogwarts Mystery, for example, but that was stuck as a low budget clicker game with limited reach and the characters involved never really caught on.

Some people have gone so far as to say this trend is a psyop, but we already know the people involved are literally not capable of making something like this break out and become popular. It really does just seem to be an organic art trend from where I'm standing.

26

u/Delphius1 11h ago edited 11h ago

there is not stopping anyone to find other magic school media (I will always recommend The Owl House), and there is no reason just making something new yourself, without the problem of an incredibly dangerous terf being attached to it.

edit: Once I was exposed to more books and media around age 10, it became so very clear how bland HP really is, really play by the numbers, it's literally just a generic power fantasy at the end of the day, I would say making something more creative won't be so hard, marketing is the hardest part

7

u/CelesFFVI 10h ago

Owl House is great

I also recommend Mage the Ascension, not as much about magic school, but about magic and belief as a concept (and also being a very punk metaphor for politics and society as a whole). It's a ttrpg, like DnD, with the core concept being that what is and isn't reality is decided by the subconscious beliefs of the mass majority, with mages being those who have realised this and can now alter reality to their whims.

The big thing is that whilst stats decide what your character can vaguely do with magic, you decide your character's beliefs for how its done, making it more improvisational and you could have a classic wizard, a cyberpunk hacker, a druid, an ecstatic cultist, etc.

It even came out before JK released her books, as the first edition came out in 1993, and one of the in-lore groups came from a precursor game called Ars Magica in the late 80s

6

u/Queen-Roblin 10h ago

I think the fact that she kept it so plain meant that people added so much themselves. They read much more in to it than there really was and it's why it's a good source for fanart, because it's such a clean slate to add so much to.

I'm not saying it's a good thing. Having read a lot of other fantasy by the time this was popular (including Pratchett and Tolkien), I couldn't understand why people liked it. But crap often gets popular... Twilight and 50 shades of grey comes to mind...

-1

u/NockerJoe 10h ago

You can't just ask the general public to latch onto any particular piece of media though, is the thing. Like sure, we've all read other stuff. Thats not the same thing as everyone and their dog watching movies made with a star studded cast or everyone reading the same book at the same time.

The quality of the work itself is a totally different metric from its popularity or cultural legibility.

2

u/Delphius1 10h ago

yes I can, of course I can, I have friends in the US and the UK actively in danger because of Rowling, I will continue to yell find something else

3

u/NockerJoe 10h ago

You would probably be better off doing stuff that actually works. My local city council has officially refused to host any more Harry Potter events after a letter writing campaign. Being shitty to people on the internet accomplishes literally nothing compared to actual activism.

36

u/PennyPeas 10h ago

I deserve to be financially compensated every time Im forced to see anything about this shit series on my feed.Ā

26

u/EclecticAF 10h ago

Can Malfoid die as a trend already?

Im so tired and its just terf and incel gooner bait -_-

19

u/Dependent_Fan_9113 9h ago

Fuck JK Rowling.

20

u/Unstable_Bear 10h ago

as a trans person, fuck Harry Potter and fuck the ā€œmalfoidā€ trend

7

u/OpenSauceMods 7h ago

Cassandra Clare gave her fans Draco In Leather Pants and it got worse from there.

9

u/SuccotashOwn6790 6h ago

Twenty year old children's fantasy franchise. Have a long think about that.

There's more moral and ethical problems with the Harry Potter franchise than there are plot holes in the Harry Potter franchise. But it's been twenty years, accept you're basically a toxic Disney adult at this point.

16

u/MarsIsDrawing 10h ago

Just stop doing Harry Potter shit

10

u/Crimiculus 9h ago

Just let Harry Potter die. JKR is a terf and uses her wealth to hurt trans people. This is not one of those "oh I'm separating the art from the artist" situations. Not when the artist is using her art and the platform it created to spread her vile rhetoric.

24

u/Ksnj 10h ago

Maybe grow up and stop obsessing over bargain bin slop made by a holocaust denier šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

6

u/Summonest 8h ago

Stop engaging with the creations of a bigot. EasyĀ Ā

6

u/ScrubTheNerd 9h ago

Stop talking about Harry Potter. Any mention of it without the context that its owner uses their profits to harm trans people just serves to keep it relevant

3

u/sususu_ryo 6h ago

everytime i heard/read the word "FOID" my nose just got assaulted with illusory smell of unwashed basement dwellers. and it STANK.

4

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 11h ago

Draco sucks ass both in the books and the movie tho. Why would people want Hermione to be with a cruel man?

14

u/Vaya-Kahvi 10h ago

Too many people romanticize toxic relationships.

5

u/alucard_relaets_emem 10h ago

Tbh, the only version of fem Malfoy I am sorta okay with is a trans girl version (especially if also trans Harry), cus I want it to be a middle finger to JK

2

u/Vaya-Kahvi 10h ago

Panel #5, oh, oh gods, I forgot about how few schools there were outside of Europe, and yeah that would be something that leads to really bad implications trying to fill it in.

1

u/WT_Duck1337 2h ago

The set of ai art in image 2 just looks like traced Dipper Pines and Pacifica Northwest shipping art.

•

u/Majestic-Iron7046 59m ago

Wow, there's really a lot of discussions over this stuff.

•

u/Big-Man-Headass 31m ago

I think a very interesting point that I saw someone make is that Harry Potter as a series, for a Young Adult series at least, really does not have a strong romantic subplot, and that is what sparked such a wave of "Malfoid", people are writing in what has been lacking.

0

u/way22 9h ago

No one is forced to watch any of that. You can just block it like I'm blocking you now

1

u/Embarrassed-Sir-1809 10h ago

I used to like harry Potter though it has a lot of plot holes not just as "what happened to xyz" but rather the logistical sort like having a CO-ed school for teenagers at the height of puberty seems like the worst idea imaginable. The main reason it seems bad is a large chunk of the students have been exposed to very little except insular communities and let's not even think about issues related to love potions added to the shit storm of sexual awakening.Ā

1

u/manofwaromega 7h ago

OP came up with more world building than JKR did

-3

u/MonitorOk6818 10h ago

I just ignore the trends. As long as people pirate that media or make fan art that doesn't go to that awful person then it's easy to overlook. Now when you're spending real money on organizations that harm gays and trans then that's where I have a problem. HP is mediocre, the only reason it got published after more than a dozen rejections and had a franchise was because it had no competition.

Boarding schools that the kids are sent to were hell in real life. I grew up in New Mexico/Colorado and they did awful things to native children here and in Canada. A couple years ago they found a mass grave of 210 kids in British Columbia, Canada by an old boarding school. Over 6,000 kids died in that country alone. They shaved boys heads, beat them for speaking their native language and try to erase their culture and religion. Why would anyone want this for their kids? Why would I have my kid fantasize about going to boarding school? With that and them having goblins with the racist views nazis had of Jews should be enough to call this trash and rid of it once and for all. My kid knows nothing of HP. If they want to watch shows about magic then there's anime and regular shows/ cartoons that don't support evil.

-1

u/JohnSpartanReddit 10h ago

I'm no artist, but I really like your use of color as shadows, it works great with your art style. I skimmed through your posts and the ones with flat colors look good too. My favorites are the ones where you use only 2 colors.

Thank you for sharing. I just wanted to say something because I know anything to do with Harry Potter won't be well received here on Reddit. That said, my problem with "Malfoid" is simply the abundance of AI of it, even if my X timeline is filled with wholesome content of the trend, I feel conflicted.

0

u/LittleUndeadObserver 2h ago

Wow, free advertising for a terrible womans mediocre book. Aweeesome..

Claming China's magical school getting smashed by the cultural revolution carries an insane amount of insinuations about the relationship between the Chinese communist revolution and the Chinese magical society, ngl

If that's your idea of fun, you must be great at parties.

-5

u/Koranna267 5h ago

Rowling is obviously a scumbag, and I don't think highly of people that give her any money under any context, but why are people freaking out so badly on reddit over this trend? It's genuinely so weird how many of you are like "You're EVIL if you like harry potter! You should be ashamed of yourself, and die, now!". It's fine to like something, that doesn't mean you're paying people money for it.

3

u/ScrubTheNerd 5h ago

You're being hysterical. "Stop talking about Harry Potter" is nothing like what you said. Talking about the franchise without the harmful context just serves to normalize and popularize it further. You don't need this franchise, or any character within it. Not posting about it at all is easier than continuing to post about it.

2

u/Koranna267 5h ago

"hysterical"??? Damn, your misogyny is showing, was that intentional? Anyway; This is patently absurd. Harry potter isn't a memetic hazard, and treating it like it is just turns it into a mean-spirited meme.

EDIT: I just realized what sub this is. That makes sense. This sub is full of this kind of bizarre hate. So many people crashing the fuck out at ever SEEING a pizzacake comic. I guess it's the same thing with harry potter now? At least that's slightly more justified. Why is this sub like this though?

1

u/ScrubTheNerd 3h ago

Dude, using an accurate adjective to describe your behavior is not "mysogyny", grow up. And the rest of the comment proves the adjective even more. I didn't say it was a memetic hazard. I explained how keeping it relevant is straightforwardly harmful to trans people.

0

u/Koranna267 2h ago

It's an excuse to bully people. That's what it is, at least in this thread. You see someone likes harry potter, then decide, "They like this thing someone I hate made, I'm going to pour out my bad feelings onto them". Don't pretty it up. It doesn't protect trans people to enforce your own special thought crimes. It is not bigoted to like a media that does not, in and of itself, contain bigotry. You don't get to pretend that you're 'moral' for meanspiritedly piling onto people expressing enjoyment of something.

Rowling is a terrible person. But acting like the people who like her stuff are invariably terrible people, or acting like talking about her content is somehow in and of itself bigoted is how you create a puritan bubble.

1

u/ScrubTheNerd 2h ago

Okay now I know you're just concern trolling, HP absolutely contains bigotry on its own

0

u/Koranna267 2h ago

Does it? I don't recall much. There's some concerning stuff with the goblins and house elves, and it's certainly written by a very british-centered mindset, but I don't think it had any particularly bigoted content, especially not explicitly so.

Also; accusing people of trolling because they disagreed with you. Hm. I wonder which play-book that came from?

Seriously, condemning people to establish your moral standing, pretending that any sort of disagreement isn't just wrong but idiotic.... It's just puritanism dressed up as progressivism.

Not sure what else I'd expect from reddit, though. Especially this sub. Reddit loves this shit.

1

u/ScrubTheNerd 1h ago

You're not getting more out of me here, it is very obvious what you are doing. If by some bizarre chance got are being sincere here: consider looking at your own views in a mirror.

0

u/Koranna267 2h ago

Oh wow, my first redditcare message! Thank you very much <3

-19

u/Milestailsprowe 11h ago

The biggest issue that there is no new material. We had the Fantastic Beasts movie, but it was meh, and then we had the recent game. The Wizarding World needs a Star Wars-like rollout.

Now we just end up with fanfics of the most popular series, and weirdly it works better than the original.

13

u/Weevil_1984 10h ago

Do you really need to fund that bigot more?

-7

u/Milestailsprowe 8h ago

It's a case of people liked the world and nothing of significance has been added in a while. People are jumping in this malfoy as they have nothing else harry Potter. Universal and HBO is making sure she stays paid not matter what happensĀ

2

u/Weevil_1984 7h ago

Then don’t watch it, and she’ll get less money

1

u/ScrubTheNerd 9h ago

No, the biggest issue is that any monetary support of this franchise goes directly to farming trans people. That includes mentioning it without this context.

-9

u/TheDotCaptin 11h ago

I got really far down one cool Luna x Harry ship that was probably longer than all of the books.

I think it was called Walk a Mile, or something like that.

-9

u/Rated_Oni 10h ago

For me the ship that I like is PansyxHermione... don't judge me.

-3

u/CmonLucky2021 6h ago

Toxic yaoi but with more stepsĀ

-4

u/zesty-fizgig 7h ago

Girllll do you remember Beg Me For It ? It's DracoxRon

It's been so long since I've read it I'm going to go read it again. I don't read a lot of fan fiction but it's one that sticks out in my mind. I'm scared to find out why. 🫣

Edit: I always shipped HarryxHermione for some reason??? As I got older I just accepted the cannon pairings. šŸ˜žšŸ¤˜

-5

u/MammothUrsa 10h ago

to be honest i like to believe there is more schools it is just you don't here about a lot of them china has a problem of elders in power sucking the souls out of weak students to continue their power and reign.

Japan's orginal schools got destroyed during WW2 not on purpose and current one is under US control but often used for magical crimes and defense.

other countries in asia each have their school but they secretive or used to fend off the soul suckers or for magical crimes or more specalized for certain kinds of magic rather then general.
