Discussion Opus 5.5 is too old now
we need opus 5.7

u/CambodianJerk 1d ago
Leave 5.5 alone! It's perfect! Don't fucking touch it!

u/OldNefariousness7899 22h ago
Same. It's making my life so much easier. If they want to tinker with it, do it when I'm less busy. I can't afford to lose it now

Get ready for less tokens. 5.5 was too good to be true.

there is 0 reason to use fable at all these days
1
u/ToughSpeedv2 22h ago
Fable is like supercars. They are faster, but your toyota gets you to work and back just fine.
1
u/30wolf03 22h ago
opus 5.5 is more than just a toyota, it is a supercar itself. maybe not as fast but much more affordable.
1
u/AriOTR1868 15h ago
opus 5.5 is a the supercar of fable 5.5 but with new car mods but those mods also make it slower
6
u/VitruvianVan 1d ago
They are not routing from Opus 5.5 to Fable 5.5. There’s no way. That makes no sense. People are scoping for Opus so why would Anthropic test Fable on those sessions? From Fable 5.1 to 5.5, maybe. From Opus 5.5 to 5.6, very unlikely. Why do they need to release 5.6 now when 5.5 is excellent and they haven’t released Fable 5.5 yet?
5
u/BombasticReindeer 1d ago
Remember that new models are almost always cheaper for them to run. If they cost it the same and it’s more efficient and smarter we get a better product and they get the same money for lower cost.

u/scanx147 1d ago

I don’t understand it either. We did it, we made a computer smart. I don’t need more.

Opus 5.5 is great, but we need more intelligence at cheaper costs. It might be fine as is for the majority of tasks but there are tasks out there where these models are still too dumb, things like biology research in particular, the smarter the better.
1
u/scanx147 23h ago

Beispiel:
Mach keine Fehler...
- Hard core Yolo vibe coding...

Was ist Intelligenz, Bewusstsein, Ethik usw.

I am getting so tired of the constant model releases. It just means the ones we know and are accustomed to will be taken from us faster. I just hope that 4.6 is kept indefinitely because that model is perfect. (I also love 4.7 but I think 4.6 is the best older model overall.) Please Anthropic / let us have access to older models indefinitely if you insist on releasing new models so quickly.
3
u/Affectionate-Ad-2711 1d ago
In which things did 4,6 perform better then the newer models
1
u/JuristaDoAlgarve 1d ago
4.6 is highly imaginative. a combination of 4.6 and 4.8 helped me identify a very hard to understand health condition. The other models, the modern models, act like GPT and self censor a bit, dont rush to conclusions.
4.6 rushes to conclusions, is wrong a lot. But on this particular topic it was 90% right and it changed my life.
-4
u/TallExponentially 1d ago
It's less censored. You can really roleplay anything (good or bad). The newer models are more strict and won't indulge in extreme roleplays or be as explicit as possible.
It's the equivalent of 4o for chatgpt people.
1
u/SentientMonoamine 1d ago
Yeah.. that part lol. I tried to get sonnet to roleplay as this controversial neurosurgeon with really fringe ideas while reading a paper on POMC neurons. It not only refused but went on to lecture me about how ridiculous of an idea that is
1
u/arjuna66671 1d ago
I loved 4.6 a lot but then Fable stole my time with it and now after over half a year, when I go back, the sycophancy is so obvious xD. 5.5 is the first Opus I really can get lost in again. Refused to even touch all the ones in between.
1
u/ModelLifecycle 1d ago
Yes, a newer model can be better overall, but it can't fully replacing what people valued in its predecessor, whether that's a particular writing style, roleplay consistency, or simply a way of interacting they've grown accustomed to
1
u/Xena2025 12h ago
Exactly. It’s the “accustomed to” part that the Frontier labs are missing. I don’t need the latest model to open up a wormhole portal. I just need consistency and reliability from the same model I am already accustomed to and love using for the work I am doing. And from what I see online, there are many others who want the same.
2
u/ModelLifecycle 7h ago
Exactly, and "accustomed to" is actually a measurable thing, not just sentiment (recently I did a controlled comparison of Opus 4.6 and Opus 5.5 with 8 prompts and 3 runs each, and found a lot of differences on hebaviour). People build workflows, calibrations, and an implicit model of how a given version responds. When the version changes, that accumulated fit is lost even if raw capability goes up. That's the part benchmarks don't capture, and it's why keep access to older models is a more reasonable ask than labs treat it as
1
u/_neverwillbemine_ 1d ago
Is 4.6 any good compared to 5.5? Or is the value for money better?
6
u/strangedell123 1d ago
Tbh off the top of head, the older models are heavily used in roleplay... I forget tho is it opus 4.6 or 4.8 do rp people like

u/Ok-Data9224 1d ago
Depends on use case. If reasoning especially for coding is valuable to you, you will absolutely notice a jump in capability with 5.5.
1
1
u/ModelLifecycle 1d ago
I actually ran both on the same 8 open-ended prompts, 3 runs each. Small sample, but controlled. In my opinion, it's less "which is better" and more that they behave differently.
4.6 tends to take up your framing and leave room for you to keep going, 5.5 lays out the structure of the problem and sets boundaries before reasoning through it. In creative writing it's even clearer, 4.6 builds around one central motif, while 5.5 builds scenes from concrete details and varies more run to run.
For coding and reasoning, 5.5 is the upgrade. But if you write or roleplay and you're used to 4.6's voice, they aren't interchangeable.

Unless anyone named Dario is reading this no one knows, but im guessing it's gonna be visibly smarter and significantly cheaper as been the trend with recent anthropic releases

5,5 is great, my feed is flooded with peoples posts who had switched to another model seeking better and then returning to claude 5.5, pretty awesome
1
u/Theninjarush 1d ago
And here I am still on 4.6 lmao. Just easier to use as a collaborative partner and STEM work cause it’s talking is easier for me to understand personally. Hard to work with a lab partner that speaks another language. But 5.5 is like ON THE CUSP of being just as nice to talk to as 4.6, but it still feels a bit stale and robotic. Ironic I know cause it’s an LLM but still. I remember 4.5 being even better to talk to. And writing tasks as well

That's why my opus started to say "from Memory" every time it says something that is referred to something written by others. So for everything

I don’t know what that was, but several times in the last week, Opus 5.5 for me was insanely fast. Like instant fast. I started to think they’re testing some kind of ultrafast mode

u/CozyDarkMage 1d ago
I believe it, UI/UX design is suddenly more refined right now with opus 5.5 as of a few hours ago

u/nojukuramu 1d ago
These "rerouting to another models" arent actually routing to a new model. They are doing Online Learning that let claude models to learn new informations. Thats why Tibo test worked before... This is not proved but this is how they usually work. BUT IF THIS IS TRUE, this could be the reason of model performance degradation.

u/VexObserver 1d ago
At this rate, Opus 5.6 will be obsolete before Anthropic even confirms it exists. I'd rather see meaningful gains in reasoning, reliability, and usage efficiency than another version number that burns through my limits faster.

u/Ok_Funny1760 1d ago
hey... I saw a button to switch accounts. I connected 3 accounts and used them. But once I log out, I can't see it anymore.

PLEASE LET'S CONTINUE WITH OPUS 5.5 FOR A LONG TIME, DON'T BRING IN A NEW MODEL AND DON'T RUIN THINGS, EVERYTHING IS GREAT RIGHT NOW. PLEASE DON'T BREAK OPUS 5.5. EVERYTHING IS FINE RIGHT NOW, WE DON'T EVEN NEED TO GET THE 5.6 RIGHT NOW, SPEED, INTELLIGENCE, EFFICIENCY, EVERYTHING IS OK! PLEASE DON'T TOUCH IT!!!!!!!!!

u/GlitteringBattle9044 20h ago
5.5 is fucking load-bearing !
Leave it alone! It's perfect! Don't fucking touch it!
1
u/Loud-Decision9817 18h ago
I feel like models are good enough. We don’t need to keep doing these little every few weeks every few month rollout new releases, and crap. There should be like smartphones come out once a year or maybe for this type of industry twice a year.
1
1
u/LoveThemMegaSeeds 18h ago
Oh my god there is a new model already???
1
u/Smbridges91 16h ago
Probably a new model every few weeks while OpenAI and Anthropic keep trying to outdo each other. Then every other week it’ll be “Anthropic sucks, switching to OpenAI,” followed by “OpenAI sucks, switching to Anthropic.” Rinse and repeat.

Hey Dario, how about you give us cheaper Max plans than the Max 5x & Max 20x plan.. That's what we really care about, not new models.. 🤷🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🚶🏾♂️

This is ridiculous. Fix the compaction every other message and let me opt out of all the tools I don't need.
1
u/GBU-38-3B 1d ago
lol you can do all of that already. but also are you switching to a model using the slug without [1m] appended?
1
u/East-Ad-6251 23h ago
Thank you for replying. Can you please tell me how to do it? I'm on Claude.ai desktop and I'm technically challenged. Since the cowork/chat merge I'm getting compactions like crazy and it never happened like that before.
And thank you Reddit for downvoting an expression of frustration, that's really helpful.
2
u/GBU-38-3B 22h ago
Not sure about desktop, as it's not something I've used before. It's very unlikely that the desktop program would have the ability to swap to short context. If you're able to choose your own auto-compact threshold, then you might've set it to something low accidentally. But really, best to just ask Claude about it.
1
u/East-Ad-6251 21h ago
Thank you again for taking the time. Unfortunately Claude is as clueless as I am. I've asked the Claude in this specific conversation (Sonnet 4.6) and an Opus 5.5 in a new conversation and they have no idea.
1
u/GBU-38-3B 20h ago
Sonnet 4.6 has a 200k context menu for subscribers. Same for Opus 4.6
https://code.claude.com/docs/en/model-config#extended-context-with-1m
It sounds like you're using it for a specific reason. Unfortunately, it's getting dropped completely soon and paying for "extra usage" (api rates) is a bad idea.1
u/East-Ad-6251 16h ago
Yes, can't pay for API. I'll have to move this project to Opus 5.5 probably. I've tried Sonnet 5.5 and got very mixed results.

Bruh... we need to stop this abusive relationship with Anthropic... Opus 5.5 it's so good... remeber when Opus was "perfect", then they broke it with ".+1 updates thing"... In my opinion, instead of, having Fable 5.5 then Opus 5.6 it's a "why"... I mean why you will have 2 "frontier models" at the same time, again...
