On my 1st rewatch of "Power" and forgot that Ruuuunkle plays a serious role in the later seasons. It's so hard to take him seriously.

Hands down, one of the most under-appreciated comedic performances on television, ever.

Handler nailed an INSANE role that could have had many other less experienced actors derailing a whole show.

Let's be honest here: who still tears up a little, even after 10+ viewings, at some point (usually around the phrase, "To my son the writer") during Season 1, Episode 8, "California Son"?

(OP raises own hand)

This show definitely only succeeded because of when it released

Don’t get me wrong, I watched every season as it aired. Pretty sure I bought the dvd sets at one point. There’s zero chance it would succeed in today’s world. The sex scene with a minor in the pilot. They would be ripped to shreds. Obviously she was of age in reality but depicting a minor having sex with a grown man. No way does it air on tv lol. Absolutely absurd show but yeah it only succeeded because of the time it aired.

Janie is the best Karen alternative

When you REALLY think about it, the answer to who Hank should have ended up with if not Karen, is Janie Jones.

I went back and forth for a while on this after the first time I watched the show, and my original choice was Abby, because she challenged him. But after my latest rewatch, it's clearly, no contest Janie Jones (Lew Ashby's muse). After Lew died, she had no other choice but to go back to angry hockey dad. Due to Hank's tendency to try and show women the respect & love they aren't getting elsewhere, it would have been a good match. Not only is she one of the most beautiful women in the show altogether, she is THE most beautiful woman he did not sleep with. Moreover, Lew would want her to be taken care of and respected and I feel that he would rather her be with Hank than anyone else. They also connected on such more real, adult, genuine level than anyone else outside of Karen.

And before the majority of you start with Faith, the problem with her is that she was so much younger and she was living this lifestyle that Hank wanted to get out of deep down. She was never a realistic long term option. Faith is that person you look at and say "If this was 20 years ago...". Faith is also a terrible choice because she's a complete wreck and that's the last thing Hank needs.

IMO, he should have ended up with a woman who had their shit together who he could build a legit life with. That's why Janie and Abby (and maybe even Trixie to some extent) make a lot more sense in my mind if Karen were removed from the equation.

Hank says that Karen inspired him to write the book and that the book will revive his career and make money for them again. Does it make sense then that the book is about his encounter with Mia? Why would Karen be his inspiration to write that? Why would he give it to Karen, let alone the world, to read if he wants to keep his hookup with Mia secret?

Edit: Runkle puts together on first reading of F&P that Hank and Mia had sex. So does Bill, which is why he only agrees to let it get published once Mia denies that they actually did it, assuring him it's all fantasy. So Karen would certainly have put it together. At the very least she would have inferred that Hank was fantasizing about Mia, which would have been problematic for Hank too.

Collini is incredible, and the fact she only appears in one season is genuinely a war crime.

Pound for pound Collini is the best single season character the show ever did, and should have been the new Eddie Nero, appearing in each season until the end.

I don’t know why Kapinos didn’t try to get Kathleen Turner back for future seasons.

There’s something you don’t really get the first time you watch the show, but years later you get it right away…

…Karen is awful. She’s an enabler to Hank’s behaviour whilst complaining about it nonstop. She’s treats him badly, cheats on him with Bill, and Bill with him, makes horrific life choices (e.g. marrying Bates), and is a shitty mother.

What happened to the show after S4?

What happened? The whole swag is gone, and its just awkward.

- Did they change writers?
- Where did Hanks/Duchovnys charm go? He seems disinterested, acts totally unsexy and unwitty, suddenly seems old and uninteresting.

What happened to this great show in Seasion 5?

My hot take

I'm curious if anyone will agree with me, although I assume a lot will disagree. Californication is one of only two pieces of media I consider guilty pleasures (the other is Entourage,) as in I'm actually ashamed to admit I watch it regularly. I watched Californication when it came out and I was in my early 30's, a wannabe writer doing lots of drugs and slutting around, and I thought I'd found a show I could relate to. Even then it was obvious to me that the show was a fantasy for certain types of men (I was trying to be a man as well as a writer, neither worked out) and I assumed it was a fantasy for Kapanos as well.
The thing is, even then I thought it was an incredibly immature show that failed to live up to a great premise, and the fault lies in the writing. Kapanos et al didn't have the courage to actually make Hank an interesting and compelling person. There's plenty of "offensive" shit that doesn't bother me at all, but the show failed by constantly making Hank's politics not current with the times. The biggest failure is how the show approaches LGBTQ issues. To me Hank's character wouldn't have been so chicken shit when it came to sex with men. It would have been cool if he was a true libertine, and was Bi, but even if he was mainly straight, he didn't need to act like a teenager when ever sex between men was brought up. The "ooh gross, lol NOT GAY" shit was stupid and retrograde for both him and Charlie. Mr "holes is holes" Runkle should have actually given his gay actor a blowjob. The amount of humiliating bullshit they made Runkle do, and simply fucking another guy was too much? To my mind this is a huge failure of the show.
In addition, Hank presented as better than the other shitty men in the show, but honestly he was just an old fashioned sexist underneath it all. And I don't mean because he had sex with lots of people he shouldn't have, I mean things like his attitude toward Becca having sex. All his "I hope she's a lesbian" and "get my shotgun" bullshit was straight out off the 50's, and not the 50s of Burroughs and Ginsberg that Hank would have worshipped (except of course he would prefer Kerouac probably, cause you know, no homo.)When it came to pleasure and vice, he was really just a typical old fashioned man like his dad underneath all the talk. I get that his whole shtick was "let's get back to the good old days of Rock N Roll" but it's hard to read his dismissal of hip hop as anything but racist, something the 5th season didn't fix. Make him go to a rave and take X. Make him get down to disco with some drag queens one night. As a fellow Gen Xer I found the "in my day" old man attitude to be the only truly offensive thing about the show. Even Hank's beloved Kurt wore a dress and stood up for gay and trans rights. Hank was, I hate to say it, a pussy.

And don't get me started on the female characters. Marcy was the only woman who had real agency in the show. Say what you will about Madeleine Martin, Becca was a cardboard cut out, and Karen wasn't much better. Hank's insistence on the purity of "his" girls was straight out off the toxic masculinity handbook. Karen should have fucked Lew Ashby and liked it.
