Regardless of what their policy is, they need to be transparent about their intentions to the voter base. Otherwise, it smacks of back room dealings.

98

u/okiedokie2468 5d ago

Back room dealings are what formed the BC Cons in the first place.
If they get elected we’ll find out the deals they’ve made with Lawyers, Landlords and Big Business and may God help us!

Wait, the BC liberals? Back room dealings? Surely you jest!

Oh my sweet summer child.

Backroom dealings are what they are all about. Look up Sam Mraiche and how much he has his hands in virtually everything in Alberta right now.

u/ship_toaster 5d ago

There's a new talking point I see that this letter wasn't secret, that it was sent to industry groups/tens of thousands of people. It's addressed to four people: Aaron, Thomas, Rebecca and Connor. And it took a full week for us to hear about it- think tens of thousands of lawyers don't know a single journalist? Conservative accounts online are throwing anything at the wall on this one.

u/latkahgravis 5d ago

They won't.

132

u/Head_Crash 5d ago

Of course not, because their plan is the screw ratepayers.

83

u/Criminoboy 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yup. As always the plan is to take our money, and give as much as possible to their corporate buddies. In this case - law firms.

And then afterwards, say that ICBC should be privatized because 'it's too expensive and Socialist!

How can so many people be planning to hand power to these buffoons at such a delicate time.

50

u/Charming-Clue1987 5d ago

The NDP really remain the better of the two

48

u/Criminoboy 5d ago

The Cons can't govern their own party, and people want to hand the province over to them - it's crazy.

25

u/Head_Crash 5d ago

The Cons can't govern their own party

They can't even refrain from threatening political opponents.

u/DromarX 5d ago

It's looking pretty grim. I think best case we can hope for if the Cons win is they fall apart due to infighting sending us back to the polls within a year. Sensible swing voters at that point will hopefully snap out of it and realize what a train wreck that party is. The NDP meanwhile comes back with a new face in charge and gets back into power either as a majority or a minority propped up by the Greens. If the Cons last a full term I would hate to see the damage they will cause.

5

u/Wrong-Extension6795 5d ago

Honestly, as one of said swing voters who feels politically homeless right now in BC, if the NDP removed Eby and put someone more like Horgan in, that would go a long way.

I wish our province had someone like Carney around.

We have seen this play time and time again and people still fall for the bait of a tiny tax break

-2

u/Powerful_Package8817 5d ago

The government should ban FN from lawsuits over land claims and pipelines

Those lawyers are far more expensive than personal injury ones

3

u/Bjornenator 5d ago

The government should ban another nation from any legal recourse for issues they have some sovereignty over? Brother... it's a bad take

Except they did, it's been a central feature of the party platform since 2024. https://globalnews.ca/news/10792598/bc-conservatives-promise-end-icbc-monopoly/

"Rustad said his plan will allow for insurance providers to compete in the marketplace.

He also promised to “ensure rate fairness for all drivers” so that no one is priced out of the market and to “restore rights for accident victims,” adding that anyone with life-altering injuries due to an accident has the right to representation and the ability to fight for the support they need."

Edit: I don't know why people keep telling me what their insurance rates are. I am not talking about that. I'm responding to the article and the comment above me about telling people their plans. The plans are right there! They've been there since 2024!

31

u/01000101010110 5d ago edited 5d ago

There is no way to repeal no fault insurance without substantially raising premiums. It's one or the other.

We're about to return to 2015-2019 level insurance fuckery. Better hope you have a clean record or you're about to be absolutely gouged. I would not be financing any type of new vehicle until this is over, you have no choice but to carry full coverage until the title is yours.

→ More replies (12)

24

u/latkahgravis 5d ago

Ah yes, bringing in Ambulance chasers will lower rates.

3

u/neksys 5d ago

I'm not justifying the policy, I'm just saying that neither the letter nor the policy was "secret".

This sums up why I'll be (albeit somewhat begrudgingly) voting NDP.

80

u/WestandLeft 5d ago

How is anyone shocked by this? Conservatives always privatize service and jack up costs for working people. It’s literally the thing they do every single time they’re government.

32

u/Betty-Rose- 5d ago

All they care about is making their rich donors more money while they trash eby for wanting to increase income tax for people who make over $1 million a year.

6

u/01000101010110 5d ago edited 5d ago

Where Eby went wrong is lumping people making $190k a year in with multimillionaires.

23

u/poppin_noggins 5d ago

Part of the reason we have a deficit is the previous government (who make up a large part of the BC Conservatives) gave large tax breaks to this tax bracket and higher while siphoning billions from ICBC and BC Hydro to pay for it.

22

u/LivinBC 5d ago

Christ Clark and her government used ICBC as a slush fund.

1

u/[deleted] 5d ago

5

u/Reyalta 5d ago

And ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

So tell me, what's the pound of cure cost on 16 years of gutting and privatizing our Province while literally stealing from BCns?

4

u/poppin_noggins 5d ago

Also Horgan benefited from tax revenue generated by the obscene rise in real estate value and constant house flipping. That was bad for our province and Eby has done a lot to fix that. Horgon also did not invest in infrastructure that’s been neglected for decades. If we want to fix our problems we need to spend money. Unfortunately we are facing economic headwinds rn but we’ve run higher deficits in the past

I'd argue that were he went wrong was lying about that by omission. Making people pay an extra 2% tax on earnings above $190k is not an unreasonable proposal for the NDP to make. This is kinda what a party rooted in democratic-socialism should be suggesting (although I'd argue $190k is a bit low considering the cost of living these days). However, announcing it as a tax increase on people making over a $1M is simply dishonest.

2

u/watermelonseeds 4d ago

$190K might be a bit low in certain cities, in most of the province that is making bank

4

u/ThermionicEmissions 4d ago

True, plus the additional 2% is only on earnings above that.

Conservatives had me until they dropped this bomb. No way am I paying more for insurance so lawyers can get rich.

86

u/01000101010110 5d ago edited 5d ago

I've been in Alberta since 2021. You want zero part of what has happened here. Cost of living has to be up 20-30% across the board in that stretch. Car and home insurance is up at least 50%. The "Alberta Advantage" is basically gone aside from housing prices and no PST.

The UCP are a cancer on society and the BC Conservatives have the playbook to reference, including use of the Notwithstanding Clause as a blunt instrument to end strikes. They have banned specific books and forbade teachers from using inclusive language in classrooms. They introduced a tiered health care system that allows rich people to pay exorbitant amounts of money to bypass the wait for surgeries, and everyone else has to wait. They donate more money to private UCP-approved institutions than any other province in the country, by far. They dropped their pants to giant tech companies and rammed through data center construction, then lied about the utility impacts on residents. And if that isn't bad enough, they have been caught fraternizing with Republicans regarding separatism.

We're planning on coming back to BC because even if the separation referendum fails (and it will) there is still a high chance the UCP repeats in 2027. They gerrymandered the electoral borders to rig rural votes to be worth more than urban votes overall. And who knows what vile shit they have planned with another 4 year term. We're now having to vote on referendum for a referendum and that has already impacted investment in the province.

u/weakimberly 5h ago

Yuuuup! People need to understand the damage that all these people are doing. We don’t need the Cons and their increasing racist, bigoted hateful views. They’re also anti union and Lorne has said the first cuts will be to education and healthcare and those of us in either know damn well that they’ll never get rid of the higher ups and it’s only the frontline workers and the patients who suffer.
I can guarantee no doctor or nurse will stay in bc if the Cons get into power - they won’t work if they don’t have a union with protections. They definitely wouldn’t accept a pay cut like Danielle smith did to healthcare workers in Alberta.
I moved back to BC years ago because I refused to take a pay cut.
People need to really be aware of how damaging the conservatives are.

95

u/abiron17771 5d ago

Big spoiler: it’s their blueprint for everything else too.

48

u/Spaceknees 5d ago

Right wing voters know very well everything they don't like about the left, yet have zero idea what it is the right is all about. Dudes make 30,000 a year and are mad about a tax on millionaires?

36

u/abiron17771 5d ago

Dude drives a lifted truck with several DUI’s. Why not vote for the party who will double his vehicle insurance to own the libz?

21

u/El_Cactus_Loco 5d ago

a 30yo male driving a Ford F-150 pays $2065/year in BC, $4791 in alberta. lmao.

9

u/abiron17771 5d ago

Owning the libs ain’t free!

4

u/VariationDry 5d ago

Thosr numbers are very close to what I was paying this time last year.

4

u/El_Cactus_Loco 5d ago

yup. my buddy in calgary said the exact same. said his rates have gone up hundreds of dollars a month since the UCP made their changes. insanity.

4

u/VariationDry 5d ago

Won't someone please think about the poor insurance companies?!

10

u/ZAPPHAUSEN 5d ago

That's Alberta in so many ways. Dudes with a lifted truck, an SUV, another car, a couple side-by-sides or quads, a seadoo, and a cabin, screaming about how the federal government is ruining his life.

74

u/GoodyLittleTwoShoez 5d ago

Wait until you see what they want to do to healthcare

44

u/01000101010110 5d ago edited 5d ago

I've seen it. I've been in Alberta for 5 years. It's fucking grim. They took the properties out of Alberta Heath Services control and sold them to privately controlled groups. Their intention is to break the system so they can move to a fully privatized model over the next several years.

They're already introduced plans for a tiered system. So rich people can pay for treatment at the expense of quality service for everyone else.

12

u/Taylorcos22 Vancouver Island/Coast 5d ago

What’s their plan? I work in healthcare and it makes me nervous but I haven’t found much online.

16

u/GoodyLittleTwoShoez 5d ago

You just need to take a look at Alberta. They are breaking public healthcare into pieces to be sold off.

7

u/ShameSudden6275 5d ago

As far as I'm aware, the current leader in the passed has said he supports two things:

  1. Getting more Private healthcare businesses and

  2. Bringing doctors into rural areas through financial means.

1

u/weakimberly 5h ago

Pay cuts for frontline staff for one.
Cons are anti union - would you work in a hospital or ltc home with no union, no protections? With a pay cut?
I know many of us would walk.

6

Cons about to listen to the displeasures of the NDP and have a “conversation” about separating.

12

u/neksys 5d ago

Why are people acting like this is surprising?? It's been a central plank of their platform for a long time: https://globalnews.ca/news/10792598/bc-conservatives-promise-end-icbc-monopoly/

23

u/El_Cactus_Loco 5d ago

Earnst & Young compared car insurance rates between AB and BC, across 30 different driver profiles- AB pays about 2.3x more. eg for a Tesla model 3, a 37yo in BC pays $1855/year. that same driver in AB pays $4791.

FUCK. THAT.

→ More replies (12)

23

u/ralphswanson 5d ago

Yes. This is big. It also shows priorities. ICBC works well. It does not need fixing. Housing costs, healthcare accessibility, Native claims on land titles, provincial deficit, and unemployment are all pressing problems. Fix those.

16

u/Kerrigore 5d ago

If you think the conservatives are going to do anything but make the deficit worse, you’re in for a rude awakening. Their fully costed platform in the last election even had a higher projected deficit than the NDP and that was with some very questionable math (in reality would have been even higher than they were projecting).

3

u/maraeznieh 5d ago

Icbc no fault insurance is bad. I’m not sure what the CP plan is exactly but I cannot say Icbc is working well right now. They may be in a better spot financially but as an injured person you are not getting a fair deal.

14

u/El_Cactus_Loco 5d ago

we all remember what it was like when injured people got a "fair deal" - and it was far from fair for everyone else. massive settlements, clogged court system, ICBC in the red. only people who benefit were the blood sucking lawyers. hard pass bro.

14

u/BigPickleKAM 5d ago

As a counter to this narrative as I have posted before.

This last year I had a family member hurt in a car accident that was not their fault. Wrote off a new car.

Wage replacement for time off work was prompt and correct.

All medical treatment was and remains covered as they get better. They are back at work now but still seeing a physio etc.

Sure they did not get a massive settlement but they got made whole after the accident with as little impact on their life as possible.

The system is not perfect but you don't need to fight them anymore now its just filling in paperwork and submitting reports from medical professionals etc. Dot the i cross the t and get what you need to get better and on with your life.

1

u/Sweaty_Pizza9860 5d ago

The problems show up when you can't get better and get on with your life. The majority of crashes end with either no injuries or relatively minor injuries that can be recovered from. Those are handled fine, and they lead to the false assumption that every case of every severity will also be handled just fine. That's a dangerous misconception.

Do you think it's fair to sacrifice anyone injured past a certain point so everyone else can pay a little less? You're saving money by kicking disabled people to the curb.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/FredFenty 5d ago

No-fault insurance is an absolute failure to victims of serious collisions. Most people don't realize this because most people don't have to deal with it. They are left without any compensation or adequate treatment if permanently injured.

If the NDP vowed to cut the costs of Healthcare in half, but the fine print excluded treatment for certain types of cancer, would that be a good thing because most people aren't affected? No. Insurance exists to cover you if you need it. ICBC is not effective at all when it matters the most.

2

u/Mountain-Match2942 5d ago

And insurance companies and their shareholders.

2

u/SmoothOperator89 5d ago

I'm not a fan of how car centric even much of greater Vancouver is but if the NDP can use their record on reducing insurance and the plan for conservatives to privatize as a wedge issue to win the election, it's a pill I'll swallow. Even as I'm getting honked at by some moron in a brodozer because I'm riding in the lane while there's no shoulder to pull over onto.

3

u/nutbuckers 5d ago

6

u/PeterRegarrdo 5d ago

So you think we should spend over 1 billion dollars more per year because 5 people needed some additional help? Because that's how much more we were paying before no fault, and a huge chunk of it was going straight into personal injury lawyers pockets.

27

u/kuratowski 5d ago

Show us the numbers.

55

u/VariationDry 5d ago

The numbers will go up. Either that or they will bankrupt ICBC and privatize insurance.

39

u/illuminaughty1973 5d ago

this was the plan the last time bc had a right wing gov, and its exactly how alberta is run who has rates double bc.

7

u/VariationDry 5d ago

My rates in BC are 40% of what they were in Alberta last year.

4

u/01000101010110 5d ago

84

u/coolthesejets 5d ago

If conservatives were smart they would have no platform, that's what the federal conservatives do, their entire platform is "we're not the guys currently in power, everything currently happening is their fault"

18

u/LaughingInTheVoid 5d ago

That's basically what they did last time. Didn't release a final platform until after advance voting.

12

u/El_Cactus_Loco 5d ago

lets not normalize hiding your platform. voters deserve an honest conversation during elections about what your plans are for power.

9

u/RealTimeTrayRacing 5d ago

Admittedly this was what Doug Ford profited off of but I think there’s a bit more to just having no platform. We all see how it turned out for the federal conservatives so who your opponent is does matter.

1

u/Misentro 5d ago

Yep, their voters don't care about the platform so why should they? They'll get half the vote based on name alone, and in the end it'll come down to whether the left likes the NDP enough to show up

12

u/Low_Contract7809 5d ago

Scary part is what's going on in the u.s.

Con voters vote against their own interests to own the libs.

Could see that happening in BC.  Basically eating a shit sandwich if it meant others have to smell their breath

53

u/Yvaelle 5d ago

Conservative plan is simple:

- Privatize ICBC, double the prices

- Privatize healthcare, 10x the prices

- Privatize BC Ferries, quadruple the prices

- Cut taxes for the rich

- Cut services for everyone

- Create giant deficits

- Maximize corruption

- Run away when shit hits the fan

47

u/01000101010110 5d ago

Then the NDP will have 4 years to fix it once the Cons term is over, they won't be able to fix it in 4 years and then the cycle repeats.

Don't even open the door to this shit.

26

u/larry-mack 5d ago

Are we going back to giving lawyers millions of dollars every year instead of making reckless drivers and whoever causes the damage pay higher rates to compensate legitimate injury claims?

11

u/Betty-Rose- 5d ago

And I’m bet it will all be privatized too.

3

u/01000101010110 5d ago

If you cause an accident and are 100% at fault, your own personal rate should skyrocket. Not at the expense of being subsidized by everyone else.

Don't drive recklessly and cause accidents. Uber for a few years until your rates come down if you have to.

19

u/Impossible_Sign7672 5d ago

Your own personal rate does go up? How is everyone so confidently incorrect about how ICBC works?

3

u/ThermionicEmissions 5d ago

To be fair, they shouldn't have called it "no-fault insurance". My son was rear-ended last spring. Both cars totaled. He received a letter from ICBC stating they found he was not at fault in any way for the accident, so his premiums won't be going up.

2

u/Impossible_Sign7672 5d ago

To be fair, they don't. They call it Enhanced Care or a "care based model" and very specifically go or of their way to ensure that responsibility still matters.

https://icbc.com/claims/enhanced-care

The only time "no-fault" is mentioned here is to say that other people call it that, and that it isn't.

5

u/KingInTheFarNorth 5d ago

And what if it’s your word against there’s, or you don’t have a dash cam, or people change their story.

It’s so often that you can’t actually prove who was the one driving recklessly.

21

u/collindubya81 5d ago

They should level with us on a lot of things, like how they are going to deal with all the extreme views in their caucus.

10

u/Betty-Rose- 5d ago

They don’t care to level with anyone. They have their radical base who will believe everything they’re told.

3

u/ZAPPHAUSEN 5d ago

lol they won't

18

u/joeroganisbi 5d ago

It's hilarious seeing cons online celebrating simply because they have bad experiences with ICBC. I'm glad they think turning car insurance into a for-profit business will help with affordability.

6

u/Betty-Rose- 5d ago

They will believe what ever their dear leader tells them.

21

u/SmoothOperator89 5d ago

Not telling voters how they plan to run the province is key to their strategy to make voters believe they're a better choice than the NDP.

10

u/kaze987 Lower Mainland/Southwest 5d ago

They should also level re their stance on rent control

3

u/Betty-Rose- 5d ago

I bet that will end too. They can’t make money on rest control.

9

u/grooverocker 5d ago

This is going to be a "cut off your nose to spite your face" election. Where voter dissatisfaction will lead to a Conservative government that actively harms our province.

49

u/bonkedagain33 5d ago

Its been a treat dealing with ICBC since the changes were made. Yearly rates much nicer also. I remember the gong show it used to be

35

u/abiron17771 5d ago

Another NDP win that never gets talked about.

3

u/Cold-Credit-9849 5d ago

You are so lucky you haven't been injured in an accident and had to deal with an adjuster who cuts you off from treatment after 12 sessions because "you should be better already"

How do you think an insurance company saves money? it isn't by helping people

and on the rates, they don't seem different from what they were before to me

11

u/Decipher Lower Mainland/Southwest 5d ago

Nobody is saying ICBC’s current system can’t be improved. They’re saying that it’s empirically better than the old system.

u/matdex 5d ago

My rates have fallen from $1550 to $1350 since the no fault system. I was already max roadstar so that's not a factor. My car was already pre-owned and old so not like it depcreciated that much more.

5

u/bonkedagain33 5d ago

My parked car was hit from behind and totalled. I was given a rental car while they adjusted the claim. They sent me a cheque that was more than expected. They also added in the replacement value if my just purchased winter tires.

Seamless and easy. No comparison years ago when I had my car stereo stolen.

Also cool that the scammers that fake accidents are out if business.

3

u/Ill-Drive-2149 5d ago

Icbc isnt a insurance company , its our company . I was inJured under the old rules ,  it was worse than now by far

3

u/El_Cactus_Loco 5d ago

that happened under the old system as well buddy

3

u/mtn_viewer 5d ago

I remember when pedestrians and cyclists could get some justice without the full time job of trying to beg ICBC for care

11

u/UNSC157 5d ago

I remember every person who got in an accident trying to sue for thousands in compensation for “pain and suffering” regardless of the severity (or existence) of injuries.

5

u/odiousderp 5d ago

I was in an accident in 2015 on the Coquihalla with a friend in the car. We were both fine. Car was totalled. ICBC of that era deemed my vehicle value had dropped about 50% in one year (it was a 2008 Prius in excellent condition). I had just left a job so I had to pay off the car loan with all of my life savings.

My friend missed one day at work because of "a sore neck" and ICBC gave her a big cheque for pain and suffering. A four figure cheque.

It was madness. I was paying 3500 a year for insurance at the time.

8

u/abiron17771 5d ago

And motorists paying out the nose in premiums for these bogus claims, even with clean driving records.

6

u/mtn_viewer 5d ago

Maybe some day you will have the opportunity to see how painful the system is some day, trying to get ICBC on the line for weeks, leaving messages but getting no response. Your head throbbing from brain damage but ICBC not allowing you to delegate to a lawyer, who under the old system would just take care of the added stress and frustration of dealing with ICBC so you could recover for an accident that was no fault of your own

Big signs and arrows pointing at what is happening in Alberta.

When insurance is privatized rates will go through the roof. Just ask anyone from Ontario. If you are under 25 . You will not be able to afford rent, food and insurance so pick wisely.

u/neksys 5d ago

I mean it's been a central part of their platform since 2024, no? People might not LIKE the plan, but there's nothing for them to really "level with voters" on.

8

u/Mountain-Match2942 5d ago

The no fault model definitely needs tweaking. For example, a pedestrian has not agreed to anything with ICBC, and should have the right to retain counsel. But, that doesnt mean we should privatize. Those saying competition will lower rates are forgetting that private insurers are a "for profit" business that will make their shareholders rich on your money.

I'm still getting sued by a personal injury lawyer for an accident that happened just before no-fault. It's cost ICBC no doubt a small fortune to deal with, and the person I hit has taken zero time off of work and had zero negative impact to everyday life (they had a physio appt a few days after the accident but that's it), just claim that things hurt. This was a low speed collision and I accepted fault for causing the accident.

Think about the tens of thousands of dollars this single case has cost ICBC, and thus insurance rates that everyone with a car pays, then think about how much we are saving by not allowing this frivolous bullshit in general. I'm sure the lawyers are happy about this prospect, but I highly doubt it will positively impact the regular person in BC.

I got sued for an accident that happened in 2016. The guy got $850,000 for a 20 kw/h fender bender on the highway.

3

u/Sweaty_Pizza9860 5d ago

Sounds like you rear ended somebody at 20km/h? You hit someone in the back of the head at the speed of a full sprint, with a car. Denial is a powerful drug I guess...

500$ a month insurance rates incoming

6

u/01000101010110 5d ago

That leak might prove to be their undoing or at least reduce the chance of a majority. Whoever sent that is a hero

u/kokomo1989 5d ago

It’s not the ICBC thing. It’s not the magical ER staffing thing. It’s not the lowering taxes without cuts thing. It’s the conservative candidates. Too many Maple MAGA crazies. I really want a change in Government for BC, but I’ll hold my nose and vote for incompetence over the lunacy we’ve seen next door in Alberta.

5

u/1baby2cats 5d ago

The party clarified in an emailed statement that the no-fault system would continue, but people seriously or permanently injured would also be able to seek compensation in court.

The statement also said a Conservative government would allow private insurers to compete with ICBC.

Minor injuries being capped makes sense to me, but there have been too many stories of how bad no-fault has gone for seriously injured people for me to think that denying those people access to justice is fair. My rates haven't gone down enough compared what I receive. Remember, before Enhanced Care, we still had no-fault Part 7 benefits, and those got updated and expanded during the minor injury cap days. It's easy to point the finger and say that lawyers take a third -- but two-thirds of actual compensation is still a lot better than what some of these poor seriously injured folks have been getting through Enhanced Care.

It's false to say "but they get help sooner!" because they would have received help through the medical benefits portion of their insurance anyway.

The Premier got the central idea right the first time with the minor injury caps. The execution could have been better, but he was on the right track.

u/Powerful_Package8817 5d ago

Lower premiums shouldn’t come at the cost of banning people from seeking justice using the courts

There’s no other precedent for banning that right in the name of saving money

3

u/PrimaryBrick9337 5d ago

I guess insurance premiums on your car is not a tax as he has stated no new taxes but we will get your money in other ways.

3

u/DdyBrLvr 5d ago

lol. Like they’re ever going to tell the truth. They have to conceal that because their policies won’t benefit regular people. It’s the Conservative way. They win votes with their anti (insert minority group here) rhetoric and promise tax cuts that mostly benefit the wealthy.

3

u/Zorklunn 5d ago

The lawyers want back in

3

u/CanadianLabourParty Thompson-Okanagan 5d ago

hey won't. They can't. They KNOW that their plans WILL drive up the costs of automotive insurance (hehe, pardon the pun).

When this election is supposed to be about "affordability", this is going to be the Conservatives' undoing.

3

u/Federal-Community554 5d ago

I can’t wait to be railroaded by the rich!

2

u/tliskop 5d ago

They should level with voters about separation and independence because you know they’re going there.

2

u/Bangoga 4d ago

I love how so many disillusioned voters would choose bc cons over just the greens.

2

u/Barbarella_39 5d ago

Lawyers are funding conservatives eh? Definitely not for the working class in BC! Vote NDP/Green!

1

u/Knucklehead92 5d ago

NDP definitely arent for the working class either in BC.

2

u/DDB- 5d ago

Why should they? Voters won't like this so it's in their interest to not tell people. It's better to lie or just ignore the issue and hope it goes away.

Once they get a majority government they can just tell the people to suck it up and enjoy the higher rates, maybe try not being poor.

3

u/Sweaty_Pizza9860 5d ago

No fault insurance in its current form is a disgusting abuse of government power. This is one issue you should take the Reddit echo chamber with a giant grain of salt on.

Your insurance rate went down $50 a month because you essentially no longer have coverage for major accidents. You get what you pay for.

1

u/QuaidCohagen 5d ago

They should level with all their plans because they're mostly bull

1

u/weakimberly 5h ago

The Cons would just make icbc even worse- while still fully screwing us accident victims.

1

u/neksys 5d ago

I mean, these letters are hardly "secret". It is very common for opposition parties to send them to special interest groups where they might convert some votes. Adrian Dix sent a very similar letter in 2017 to the trial lawyers, cozying up to them by promising "No to No Fault". And then they promptly introduced changes to ICBC anyways.

This is a distasteful part of electioneering, but it's not inherently newsworthy (other than the fact that British Columbians have a LOT OF OPINIONS about car insurance)

-2

u/SubstantialWin4251 5d ago

I just saw on X that the NDP sent a similar letter in 2017 lol. Regardless of the merits of this proposal, I don't think it was the big "secret" its being framed as.

33

u/Head_Crash 5d ago

I just saw on X that the NDP sent a similar letter in 2017 lol.

Then the NDP introduced no-fault and kept rates down, to the point where insurance in other provinces is 2x more expensive.

Reversing no-fault will absolutely increase rates.

Sorry, but "I just saw on X" sounds about as trustworthy as "I just read on Facebook". Rob Shaw is an actual journalist who cites sources.
Not to say what you read is untrue. It is just not a source that I would regurgitate unverified information from.

u/LateToTheParty2k21 5d ago

It's not. And none of the letter indicated it was going to double the cost. That was pure political spin.

17

u/CookhouseOfCanada 5d ago

The stats show the costs would double

5

u/Commercial_Hat5670 5d ago

I'm guessing it would depend on your age and accident history. Based on the old system before moving to no fault it's the youngest drivers that would get wiped out by moving to the at fault model. Even then, based on what I remember older drivers with no accidents will end up paying about 15% more as well.

Either way, an excellent time to screw everyone over is in the middle of an affordability crisis.

6

u/illuminaughty1973 5d ago

everybody pays more, the cons are proposing a for profit system.

1

u/yourdamgrandpa 5d ago

I’d be interested to see the numbers, if you have a source

Please show me one jurisdiction where car insurance is either private and or at fault with lawyers involved and where costs are as low as ICBC? Don’t think you’ll respond to this.
