Walking and Talking

My friend and I like to go for a walk in the park, which is next to my apartment. She drives to my neighborhood and we walk and talk together.

We came up with an idea that we read a book of our choice and talk about it.

This week, we read "The Smile of Shoko" which is written in Korean.

Shoko in the story is a Japanese girl who visited the main character's high school as an exchange student and stayed at her house for a week. After she went back to Japan. So-you, the main character, and her grandfather got Shoko's letters. They corresponded for a certain period and stopped. The story shows how they communicated differently depending on what languages they used. It also shows that even with our own languages, we are not always honest, and sometimes with a clumsy use of a foreign language, we find ourselves more open about our feelings.

What I liked about the story is how the characters were influenced by other characters without their direct involvement. They were physically far from each other but that physical distance was the medium that tied them altogether.

My friend and I felt that we learned more about the story we chose while walking and talking. I am really looking forward to our next walk.
