UK Food stolen - Pin is the last four digits of your phone number

Just had my £40 Popeyes order stolen, driver didn't move for ages or would jump from one spot and back again, then it all a sudden said the food was here but he hadn't moved on the map. He then messaged his through the app with his number and said, "Ring me," so we did, and then it stated that the food was delivered.

When checking, we realised the pin was the last four digits of my phone number, hence why he asked us to call him.

So the lesson here is - do not give them your number in any circumstances

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Just to add, they can call you through the app, you don't answer and it goes to your voicemail. "You've reached 867-5309, leave a message after the beep".

My voicemail doesn't state my number, fortunately

I literally joked that they were probably off stealing our food and getting high because they’d been sat at Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester for ages — for anyone not from Manchester, it’s a city-centre square that’s notorious locally as a hangout for rough sleepers and people openly using drugs.

Turns out I’d accidentally solved the case in real time 😭 First time trying Popeyes as well, so I guess the driver can let me know if it was any good.

I'm so sorry. FYI, I prefer the spicy, so you can try that sometime.

My Pin has never been the last 4 digits of my phone number, if i was you id just call customer support over and over and make up reasons until they put you through to a human then explain what happened, hopefully they can help you but theres not much else u can do other than that.

My boyfriend just ordered a different takeaway and the pin was the last digits of his number. Can't believe I've never noticed until now!

Definitely never thought about this happening, I’d hope they encrypt our number like the drivers

Only make or accept calls through the app; never share your number in the delivery notes or with the driver.

The other part people often forget: if your voicemail is “[your number] is not available, please leave a message at the tone” then a missed call will also give your driver your number, even if they called through the app.

Great advice about the voicemail, thank you

I hadn't thought about that for circumventing obfuscated numbers. Beyond UE/DD scams, that's good info to be aware of (and guess I'm changing my VM to not even state the number).

The driver gave his number so OP called it. It wasn’t through the app. I’ve driven for door dash and uber and the pin is always the last 4 digits of their phone number.

Thanks for that confirmation, never realised as now and then the pin is different

Yeah I did think, why doesn't he just call me? Then realised they must be hidden in some way I am assuming, like call through the App

Some people may notice the last four digits of their number anyway, I don't think I've ever clocked before now because I had to recite my number out loud to think what the last digits were. It may have happened and you haven't noticed?

Driver can override PIN request.

Very interesting because as delivery drivers you can actually go around getting the pin. I forget to ask customers for it every once in awhile and you can still confirm deliveries.

actually if you call or they call and no one answers it gives the real pin and phone number free food method ngl

Always contact drivers through the app. It has a mask so drivers can't see your actual number. Never call directly. Sorry some jerk stole your food. What a POS.
