Announcement Important PSA: How To Identify a Scam

How to Identify Social Engineering Scams

Social engineering scams often involve manipulative tactics to deceive users into providing sensitive information or money. Here are some red flags to look out for:

  1. Unsolicited Offers of Help – Scammers often pose as helpful individuals offering solutions to problems you didn’t ask for assistance with.
  2. Urgency and Pressure – Scammers create a false sense of urgency, asking you to act quickly or risk losing access to something important (e.g., your Steam account).
  3. Requests for Payment or Personal Information – Legitimate Steam support or trusted users will never ask for your login credentials, 2FA codes, or payment in exchange for help.
  4. Impersonation – Scammers may pretend to be from official sources or even impersonate trusted community members or moderators.

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

  • Never Share Personal Information – Moderators and Steam support will never ask for your password, security questions, or 2FA codes.
  • Verify Requests – Always verify the identity of anyone offering help. You can do this by checking if they are official moderators or trusted community members. If in doubt, contact the moderation team directly.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication – While not foolproof, having 2FA enabled adds an extra layer of security to your account. Keep your 2FA codes secure and never share them.
  • Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Help – If someone reaches out offering assistance you didn’t request, be wary. It's better to seek help through official channels like Steam support or trusted subreddits.
  • Steam will never contact you over DISCORD/STEAM CHAT – Report and block them instantly.

We're Here to Help

Announcement What To Do When Your Steam Account Gets Hacked

Need more help? Join the Discord Server

I’m making this post in hopes it will reduce the amount of “I’ve been hacked posts”. Link people to this exact post so they can figure out what to do. Don’t be afraid to leave comments if you need more assistance but try your best to avoid making entire posts about it.

Follow these steps to regain control and secure your account:

1. Don’t Panic Act Fast

If you act quickly, there’s a good chance you can fully recover your account.

2. Still Logged In? Change Your Password NOW

📍 Go to Steam > Settings > Account > Change Password

  • Use a unique, strong password (not reused from any other site).
  • If you can’t log in anymore, skip to Step 3.

3. Can’t Log In? Use Steam’s Recovery Tool

🔗 Go to Steam Support
Click "I can't sign in" > "My account has been stolen"
Follow the recovery process.

  • Provide any proof of ownership (like previous email, CD key, or payment history).
  • Be thorough but honest Support will help if you provide real details.

4. Revoke Access from Other Devices

Once back in, go to:

📍 Steam > Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard
Click “Deauthorize all other devices”

This kicks out any hackers still logged in.

5. Turn on 2FA (Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator)

📍 Same place: Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard

  • Use the mobile authenticator, not just email codes.
  • This is your best protection going forward.

6. Scan Your PC for Malware or Keyloggers

Use tools like:

  • Malwarebytes
  • Windows Defender
  • Bitdefender / Kaspersky

You got hacked for a reason. Clean your system before logging in again.

7. Lock Down Your Email and Linked Accounts

If your Steam email or other linked accounts were compromised:

  • Change their passwords immediately
  • Enable 2FA on your email too (especially Gmail, Outlook, etc.)

8. Still Locked Out? Contact Steam Support

If all else fails, go here:

Be ready to provide:

  • Your Steam username and email
  • Purchase receipts (Steam Wallet codes, PayPal invoices, etc.)
  • Approx. date you lost access
  • Any suspicious activity or messages you saw

⚠️ Final Tips:

  • Never share your login info, even with “Steam Admins” they don’t exist.
  • Avoid shady “trading bots” or fake tournament invites.
  • Don’t download random files from Discord, friends, or strangers.

If you’re reading this because you’ve been hacked, don’t feel ashamed it happens to thousands of people. What matters is how fast you act and how well you secure things afterward.

Good luck, and stay safe. 🔒

Discussion My trust in steam support was tested and I was not let down

Last night my account got compromised. I got contacted by Steam support to work through the problem they were very helpful and I am so glad they are real people and not just automated AI like Microsoft anyway when I woke up in the morning I was logged out of my account so I kind of panicked and tried to reset it without looking inside my Gmail then when I looked inside, I discovered that Steam had reset my password to temporary one for me so I logged back in and successfully recovered my Steam account and changed my password TLDR STEAM SUPPORT is goaded as ever, and the Microsoft support can go straight to hell

Problem just updated to windows 11, steam is being a pain

after moving to windows 11, i still have all of my steam games in my D: drive, but steam is saying every single game has an update queued which is all really slow, been like 3 hours and im only 41% thru the first game, which is REALLY odd, as usually just downloading a 100gb+ game like baldurs gate 3 takes 30 minutes tops. is there any way to tell steam “hey, all files are already downloaded, they are right here” or any other ideas?

Problem Steam not opening at all

Hi, every time I try to open Steam I am stuck on a loading screen which will go on for at least 20 minutes. I've quit steam, restarted my computer, repaired all C++ systems, and turned off and on WiFi. No results. What should I do?

Problem Games launches differently if I launch the exe file directly.

So I got this weird bug where some games just don't launch the same when I start them from the exe file manually in the file explorer and on the Steam launcher.

For instance, I was trying to launch Crawl on Steam but it would just be a white screen for some odd reason. After hours of research and testing I realized that the issue isn't even there if I launch it from "Crawl.exe" in the game's local files, meaning it didn't even launch the same way.

Crawl was simply an example, this happens for other games with all of them having different things happening.
I do not have any launch options on any of the games I'm having this issue with.

Do any of you have a solution or something I can look into to fix this damn thing? Been having trouble with it for almost a year now.

I apologize if my post is unclear or vague, if you have any questions regarding clarity I'll be happy to answer it as soon as possible.

Problem Please help I have no clue how to fix this

the witcher 3 remastered trying to download

every time I try to install games now on my outside drive for my pc it takes an absurd amount of time. This just started and the last thing I remember doing was a call of duty 4 mw1 mod and then this started. I've tried clearing cache, testing with CrystalDiskInfo, wifi testing etc, but this problem only appears with my outside drive. When I've tried using my other drive {1 of 3} it takes 24 minutes, so it's just with the one drive. Along with all of this I've ran many tests like malware or integrity and get blanks, please help me out.

Problem Steam support is failing my account recovery

By my own fault I used a 3rd party website that was not secure when I thought it was. My account was taken. I had put in a support ticket over 3 weeks ago and within the ticket I had received confirmation that the account became locked and I would receive it back last week. I did not receive any new confirmation that I have it or that I will be getting it back. Also with that a day before I was supposed to have it back a friend told me that someone was messaging them from my account and it was not me. I also somehow have another account hooked to the same email. I have 30k hours of gameplay and thousands of dollars spent on games and in-game purchases. So I would really like to not lose that progress and money.

I’ve put in a new ticket a few days ago and have given the same information and now gotten a different answer that it wasn’t sufficient information. They now need a CD key that I guess has been used on the account. To my knowledge I have not used any sort of physical steam code into my account. And if I did it was many years ago and I don’t have access to the code any longer. And so they have told me if I don’t provide this code I will no longer be helped and the support ticket will be closed. I have offered bank statements of purchases and emails of purchase confirmations and even people to state that the account belongs to me. But no response to any of it.

So I’ve come here to see if anyone has anything else that has worked for them or am I just fucked.

Problem "64 files failed to validate and will be reacquired"

hey eveyone, how are we? good i hope, i really could use some help, while already posted over on r/HalfLife and r/Valve i tought i'd post here to because its relevant. for over a year now i have not been able to play Half-Life 2 OR Portal 1, the game keep crashing on launch and i have no idea what to do anymore because it feels like i tried everything, let me fill you in one what happens, when i click launch on both games a black screen will appear for a second before the game suddenly closes. When i validate portal, everything checks out, when i validate Half-Life 2 though, it will tell me that 64 files failed, and despite how many times i've tried it will not reacquire them.

i have tried the fallowing
validating
fresh install
cleared steam cache
cleared workshop folder
changed install location
changed versions from anniversary to pre anniversary
checked drivers
used control panel to scan pc health
used event viewer (when i use it, it logs the error but fails to log what the source is)

despite all of this the same issue remains, however there is some extra context that might give clues to those who are much smarter then me, while trying to fix the game once, Half-lifes icon suddenly turned into a globe without reason, and there was an event that happened prior to them breaking to, back in November the hard drive they were installed on began to fail and slowly corrupt, the drive was replaced and i've had no issues with other games that were once on the failing drive, the drive was a external one meant for non important files, half life and portal were on it when it began to corrupt, however they both got a fresh install on a new drive, other Source 1 games such as Gmod, Black Mesa source, Team Fortress 2, Portal 2, Left 4 dead 2, Day Of Defeat Source and Counter strike source all function as intended

i've given you the current situation and a little backstory of an event that happened before they stopped working. i hope someone, anyone can see something i've missed, i LOVE these games with a passion and do not want to give up on them, thank you for reading this far, have a wonderful day

Problem Images not loading

I'm getting this weird issue where a lot of images on the Steam client aren't loading properly. I'm not sure what caused this or how to fix it. Anyone know what to do?

I've tried clearing the Steam cache and opting into the beta and that didn't seem to do anything.

Problem How to reset password?

Im trying to reset my password, but whenever I do the capcha, an error message says

"Your response to the CAPTCHA appears to be invalid. Please re-verify that you're not a robot below.

(Reference ID: 14230917048923066)"

I've cleared all my browser history and cookies, I've cleared temp files and all that, still nothing.

I went to make a second account to open a ticket but the capcha prevents me from doing that.

Anyone know how to help, cause im a little frustrated rn😭

Problem Steam issue with profile pictures

I'm looking to reddit as my last resort because I can not fix this for god knows what reason, ever since I've upgraded my pc (CPU, Motherboard and DDR5 Ram) I have not been able to view my profile not even in game, I can see it when I fully load into steam (screenshots provided) however when in game I can not see my pfp or view others its just a question mark, I've done everything to solve this and even went to lengths of factory resetting my pc, I have two accounts on steam, my main one and my old one I just managed to recover not long ago and it affects both accounts, the Binding of Isaac screenshots are from my main account and the rocket league screenshots are from my old account, for some reason I can not fix this no matter what I've done does anyone have an idea of what I can do? (I included something I found in Big picture where it says I'm not connected to the internet despite having a connection to my ethernet)
