Software I made a GUI for the Arcturus Vision splat pipeline – pick, check and convert Frame recordings, straight into the Gaussian XR gallery

Hey everyone! I've been playing with the Arcturus Vision Camera on my Frame and turning recordings into Gaussian splats with Arcturus' reconstruction pipeline. Walking through your own living room in Gaussian XR is honestly something else. Getting there, though, involves a lot of manual steps: copying recordings off the headset, running the scripts with the right flags, making the gallery preview image and name plate, copying everything into the right folder on the Frame…

So I built Splat Workshop, a small, free and open-source GUI around the Arcturus pipeline. The reconstruction itself is done entirely by Arcturus' scripts and Spirula Studio; Splat Workshop handles everything around it:

  • Pick a recording straight from the Frame (over SSH) or from your PC, with thumbnails
  • Check it first: it measures brightness, structure, fast pans and covered lenses second by second, so you know before waiting an hour whether a recording is any good
  • Run the pipeline with Fast / High / Maximum presets, with live progress, time left and a quality curve
  • Lands directly in the Gaussian XR gallery with a preview image and name plate, like the built-in example scenes
  • A tray icon shows what's running; conversions keep going in the background and can be cancelled and resumed
  • Floor plans (experimental): draw a top view of a scene, with a simple measuring tool. Recordings from one session should line up on their own into a plan of your whole home. That worked nicely for my first two rooms; I'm still testing how well it holds up for a full apartment.

It's Linux only for now, because the Arcturus pipeline is too. You need a GPU that runs Spirula Studio (I use an RTX 4070 SUPER: about 35–50 min per room on "High"). The Arcturus scripts aren't included; you download them from arcturus.vision. Setup on the Frame is quick: enable Developer Mode, set a user password under Developer, copy your SSH key over. The README walks you through it.

GitHub (free & open source, GPL-3.0): https://github.com/thunderheronight/splat-workshop

The floor plan in the screenshots is synthetic example data, not my home.

Transparency note*: I wrote this with the help of AI. The code and docs were created together with Claude (Opus 5.5 by Anthropic) in Claude Code. The idea, testing on my Frame, the decisions and the review were mine.*

Not affiliated with Valve or Arcturus, just a fan project. English and German UI. Feedback and bug reports very welcome!

The disclaimer should read: this was made with AI, install at your own risk.

No offense. I simply don't trust random people's AI projects on my PC.

Unfounded AI fear. All open source software on GH is install at your own risk. You also shouldn't trust random people's non-AI projects on your PC either.

Missing the point of inexperienced developers relying too much on AI. And don't trust "random people's non AI projects" goes without saying.

So what is the point then? What specifically is your fear?

don't trust "random people's non AI projects" goes without saying.

So why say it with an AI project?

People don't usually think about potential risks of inexperienced developers that use AI.

Why you're mad about warning people about AI code?

The point they are making is any code you grab on github, ai generated or human written has the same warning. It being AI generated makes zero difference to the "be careful" statement. Arguably an AI is less likely to create a massive device breaking change than someone with zero coding knowledge at all.

You dont have to like AI but "ai bad it might break your device" is just quite simply misinformation. Replace it with "unverified code might break your device" and you've got accuracy.

We have people writing code for decades, there's nothing new about being wary of running untrusted software.

AI generated software is new, some people may have false sense of security. New AI software projects are flooding nearly every community, and more people should warn about running AI generated code.

AI generated code is safer than your junior wannabe was producing 6 years ago

You say that, but there are multiple instances of AI hallucinated libraries that don't exist. Which caused several supply chain attacks. A junior wannabe at least doesn't hallucinate.

Edit: this issue even has a name by the way: slopsquatting

If library doesn't exist, your CPP code won't compile. Junior wannabe DOES hallucinate more than you think. Did you ever produced a single line of code in your life? If yes, did you not made a mistake in it?

You say that, but there are multiple instances of AI hallucinated libraries that don't exist. Which caused several supply chain attacks.

I would actually like to see a source on this claim. Not of AI hallucinating a library, but that hallucinated library actually resulting in a single supply chain attack, nevermind multiple.

I'm familiar with the concept of slopsquatting, but so far we haven't seen anything beyond a proof of concept.

I just searched and came up with nothing beyond papers and demos showing that it's a possibility.

The concern is real, but don't lie about the state of things, it takes away the credibility of your argument.

Edit: They exaggerated, but I was wrong.

The difference is previously the vast majority of code was published by people who at least learned a bare minimum, now tons of random idiots with an AI subscription are publishing, including the people who weren't doing stuff poorly before at increased outputs.

So a steak too juicy situation? It's a problem that there are more PoCs and projects to evaluate and build on than there were before? It's GitHub, good projects will shine and become popular as before, bad ones will not work or not be adopted.

4

u/D13_Phantom 1 TB 1d ago

Not if there's a dissproportionate rise of bad projects. More bad ones will slip through.

potential risks of inexperienced developers that use AI

What, specifically, is your fear?

These risks also exist with non-ai code. It's inconsistent to call it out "because it is AI assisted". Either you and a community have reviewed it and found it to be safe, or you have not. The provenance does not matter. Do not confer a false sense of safety on "hand built" code, when AI does actually catch many edge cases and security risks that many developers would not catch if hand building.

With a person, you can look at the previous work they have done and the reputation they have built through that work. With a random person using AI, there is no such reputation. If they do not know how to evaluate the code for themselves, then they are simply passing on whatever security flaws were put into it by whatever LLM they used. An LLM that cannot check its own work.

In any event, a disclaimer is warranted.

1

u/adepssimius Soon™ 1d ago

Again, same quality and reputation argument stands for a person using AI vs a person not using AI.

4

u/Alatain 1d ago

Not an untrained person. A person that cannot review the code is posting whatever the LLM gave them. LLMs will definitely give you incorrect code at some point.

Given that, a person that is simply passing on their vibe coded work cannot have a reputation. Their work is randomly going to contain potential security flaws. A person that codes something can gain a reputation for their work. Simple vibe coding cannot.

The very same points can be made for an inexperienced dev posting their work on GitHub.

If AI will have errors at some point guaranteed as you say, then a person simply passing on their vibe slop will have a bad reputation.

The work of an experienced dev is randomly going to contain security flaws, and it frequently does. A person that consistently publishes good vibe coded work will indeed develop a good reputation, contrary to your assertion.

My opinions are based on 10 years of professionally writing and reviewing code. Once AI tools got good, the PRs I got from my juniors covered more edge cases, contained fewer functional flaws, and contained fewer vulnerabilities. You can argue that AI is bad all you want, but the fact of the matter is that the core skill of being able to review open source code before you use it is still your responsibility to wield correctly.

As if inexperienced developers didn't existed before AI lol

u/Moist_feet_ 1d ago

When was the last time Inexperienced developers were flooding the internet with projects where they don't understand what most of the code does?

Is there an ARM build for running in the frame itself?

2

u/Significant_Rise_953 1d ago

Hmm. Not impossible I think... you would need to run the Spirula Studio on the frame. The problem is the computing. My rtx 4070 and i9 needed 30min to 1h for one Scene. I Imagine the frame would need much more time if it can do it so its impractical.

But for the maschine on the other hand it could maybe work

Looks very neat. Will check it out when i get my Frame, ut saved this in the meantime.

Cool idea! I could see it as a possible real world application for property surveyors if the measuring tool is exact enough.

As for the AI use, just about all code is written by ai now. What matters is the architecture and security of the program. Keep running tests whenever you implement something, make sure you have automated testing implemented, and you check, double check, and triple check for security gaps.

Slop is only when there is no thought or originality put in by the human and the output serves no purpose.

Even if most code is written by ai (opus 5.5 is scarily good in my experience)! the user putting in the effort design a useful application (that i will be trying when i get my Frame).

Did anyone tested how much stuff Arcturus sends to their servers?

1

u/MonorailPurple 1 TB 1d ago

Nothing because it’s just a camera interface.
