Games I love this clip because you see starkiller literally disintegrating stormtroopers and trees with his powers while darth vader just casually walks to him like he's mildly inconvenienced by cold wind

This trailer was so hype man, force unleashed 2 looked so promising, only for it to have very fluid and satisfying gameplay for a game made in 2010, but then had the most underwhelming and rushed story of any Star wars game

Crazy to say, but the Wii port was better. Not as flashy and fluid as the main ones, but it's a little longer and actually included a Boba Fett boss battle.

I just want to point out that Vader appears to have purposefully protected his cape from the blast as well. Clearly the force of the blast made it billow but it did not burn. As we saw in rogue one when his cape billowed in space I consider it cannon that Vader cares more about his cape and how it looks than anything else.

Thats the canon explaination. People don't talk about this but the game isn't canon to its own story, it's a power fantasy variant. The Novelization explains the canonized story where yeah, he just redirected it and let gravity do the heavy lifting.
38
u/MingleLinx 13d ago
Even redirecting it with the force is a pretty big feat
19
u/Anonymous-Mf-22 13d ago
This is true, but it's a very different ballgame than ripping it out of the sky

u/Viking_From_Sweden 13d ago
Been a minute since I last read the book, but iirc he didn’t just redirect it like deflecting a punch, he redirected it by flinging to the side like a frisbee
→ More replies (1)11
u/MajorSery 13d ago
Why do you assume the novelization is the canon version? We don't do that for the movie novelizations, so why do it for a game?
16
u/Anonymous-Mf-22 13d ago
Because the author's intention was for one to serve as the true Canonical story (it was considered C-Canon in old canon) while the other was a power fantasy with roughly the same story, just significantly scaled upwards. Galen is significantly weaker in the novel and barely survived his fight with Vader by getting lucky while the game shows a pretty decisive victory on Starkiller's end.
5
u/greg19735 Leia Organa 12d ago
One reason is because the game allows you to make choices. And you can't have both choices be canon. Also like, you can lose in the game if you stop playing.
But most importantly you can't have a mysterious character we've never seen in the movies be 100x more powerful than the most powerful sith.
10
u/Malak1man 13d ago
It was going to crash right on top of him, so he used the force to accelerate the ship's landing so it'd cinematically stop right in front of him. Pretty cool.
14
16
16
u/Thelastknownking 13d ago
No, people will see this and say "Starkiller still isn't the most powerful Force user".
And he wasn't. He's not even in the top 3 in Legends, actually.
23
u/indoninjah 13d ago
I feel like that says more about how fucked Legends was than anything lol
19
u/Thelastknownking 13d ago
It's also contextual.
Starkiller did not need to be as powerful as he was.
Luke became that powerful in Legends because they wanted to show how powerful Anakin could've become, through Luke.
Palpatine was unnaturally augmenting his power, so it wasn't naturally that way.
And then Vaylin in Old Republic is presented as an unstable force of nature, so as to make it more impactful when she's taken down.
Starkiller, they just wanted to have some fun. The mistake was making it canon, even if only for a while before other authors started intentionally kinda blacklisting it.
2
u/Public_Muffin1990 13d ago
No it's just because in "legends canon" starkiller goes off the novel who isn't powerful. The game wasn't canon the star wars universe. In legends there were definitely absurdly powerful sith like Nihilus and Vitiate, but these were one-off anomalies. Most sith in legends were below Sidious' level in canon and the most powerful were at Vader's level.
3
9
u/scifiandsuch 13d ago
I mean you could argue this is a showing of true power of the force against normies vs a fully trained force user, which is usually the battles we see in the movies. Against normies, the force disintegrates them. But against Vader, it’s nothing but a breeze.
15
u/MajorSery 13d ago
I've always said that TFU shows the Force the way it should be. With stuff like this Vader's line in ANH about the Death Star being insignificant compared to the power of the Force actually makes some sense. But even Starkiller barely manages to outdo a single Star Destroyer. If there had been two he'd've been toast.
The most powerful thing we'd seen in the movies at this point in time was Yoda lifting an X-wing. So the most powerful Jedi ever was about as useful as a small crane. That's small potatoes compared to the claim Vader made. At least now in canon we have Palpatine zapping a whole fleet with his lightning.
3
u/Inevitable_Badger641 12d ago
Maybe vader was talking about the force as a whole and not one person tapping into it.
8
u/Weird_Angry_Kid 13d ago
Yeah, Jedi and Sith are treated like supersoldiers who can change the tide of entire wars but the movies themselves don't really show why this is the case but the narrative is built around Force users being stupidly broken.
If Jedi can be killed by just a couple of guys with guns, then the Jedi Purge doesn't make any sense. Palpatine spent so many resources trying to hunt down any survivors of Order 66 because he knew even a single surviving Jedi had the potential to topple his Empire.
People always bring up Order 66 to say the Jedi are weak but they forget the whole point of Order 66 is that the only way the Clones could have won was betraying the people they had been fighting side by side with for the past 3 years, people who trusted them with their lives.

u/S1lly_One 13d ago
It's a really cool visual, I wish there was more unique stuff done with the force in canon. I don't think there’s been a unique ability seen in live action for years at this point. Not sure if anything this powerful should be canon unless it's an important moment though it's a bit excessive.
293
u/Ace201613 13d ago
To be fair, pretty much all of the legwork for developing actual force abilities and interesting ways to manipulate The Force (such as force illusions, healing, storms, battle meditation, etc.) has always been done outside of the films. I think Force Lightning in ROTJ was actually the last time a Force Ability premiered in the films rather than being displayed in expanded material such as a video game or book first.

u/Alternative_Hotel649 13d ago
Did the Force Dyad stuff show up before TLJ?

u/theexile14 13d ago
I think the term is new, but it's basically just a hyped up Force Bond.
I know Kotor and Kotor 2 at least show the bond, distance transmission of pain (thus instant communication of information), improved shared healing, etc. in their stories.
43
u/ImReadyForButt 13d ago
Yup. Kotor’s entire plot revolves around a force bond. It’s integral to the entire story and Revan, specifically
14
u/Desperate-Ganache804 13d ago
Kotor 2 has the bond. Between the PC and what’s her name. Kreia.
→ More replies (1)9
u/ImReadyForButt 13d ago
It’s both, then. Because Bastilla Shan and Revan form an unintentional force bond when she saves Revan’s life. They share memories and emotions through the Force.
20
u/Ace201613 13d ago
Good catch. I didn't think of that. The term "Dyad" did not exist. However, there were various types of unique Force Bonds. KOTOR 2 is probably the most famous since the entire plot is centered around the protagonist, The Exile/Meetra Surik, creating bonds with people and drawing strength from them. Han and Leia's kids had a "twin bond" in legends that lasted pretty much throughout their lives and primarily allowed them to communicate emotions with one another. Another set of twins in the New Sith Wars era had a bond that's probably the closest to the Dyad, in which they not only communicated mentally but were so enmeshed with one another that they were like 1 person in 2 bodies. The novel they appeared in actually mentioned that they were so strongly united that their bond literally couldn't be broken. So, some people would probably argue that the Dyad is just pulling from the older concept of different force bonds we saw in games, books, and comics. I'm fine considering it something new though.

14
u/LITMAC97 13d ago

I have literally never seen a complaint about Kylo freezing that bolt. Not one. This feels like a straw man.
The only thing I can recall fans complaining about is the force healing, because it definitely creates some irregularities in canon (“why didn’t Anakin force heal Shmi or Obi Wan force heal QGJ”).

6
u/Audience_Over Rebel 13d ago
IDK, I've definitely seen people complain about the bolt freezing, in so much as they didn't think it was a cool Force power.
The only thing I can recall fans complaining about is the force healing, because it definitely creates some irregularities in canon
See this one is interesting, imo it's the one cool thing that came from TRoS and I think it was completely on accident; Palpatine would never teach Anakin about the idea of Force Healing because it requires self-sacrifice, something that would never occur to a Sith as an option.
Granted that doesn't explain why the Jedi wouldn't be teaching it, but maybe they did and Anakin just didn't take that class, who knows.
4
u/LordDemonJackal 13d ago
In context, force healing isn't a thing because the Jedi have fallen massively by the time of Anakin and Obi-Wan, and have been resting on their laurels. There's mass amounts of knowledge, training and power that really just doesn't get passed down to future generations because "The threat is gone we don't need this kind of stuff. It's time for peace and rebuilding, not waging galaxy sized wars".
Most of the Jedi at this time absolutely PALE in comparison to like a child aged padawan from 1000 years before. Most of the Jedi alive have only heard of Sith from fairy tales and ghost stories. Many of them are simply negotiators and politicians, while the others are essentially strong arm enforcers/soldiers. These aren't the ancient, Force driven monastic pursuers of truth and mastery, they're Republic troops and generally behave as such.
Most Jedi at this time probably had a fairly limited skill set overall.
13
u/StrangerNo4863 13d ago
This "context" isn't even true in legends let alone canon lol wtf.
Let's assume it's true though and the Jedi are vastly weaker than in the past:
Force healing is possibly the greatest humanitarian option for a Jedi. And considering their "weakening" was always about strength of arms and not general knowledge they would have kept force healing around bar none.
→ More replies (4)7
u/scifiandsuch 13d ago
Force heal would absolutely be an ability passed down in the order. I get that some knowledge would be lost over time, but the Jedi had a massive database of holocrons about the force, and I struggle to imagine that force heal would’ve been lost on them.
3
u/MajorSery 13d ago
Even that random non-Jedi in Andor used Force healing. The Jedi should absolutely have known about it.
→ More replies (6)2
u/rmslashusr 13d ago
I don’t know, obiwan and QGJ forgot the secrets of force speed 10 minutes into TPM. Maybe using the force has an Alzheimer’s like effect on the users brain and all the Holocrons are just the Jedi equivalent of post it notes as a coping mechanism to cover for constantly forgetting
2
u/scifiandsuch 13d ago edited 13d ago
I always figured force speed was an incredibly fatiguing ability to use, and not one you’d expend energy on while actively fighting a Sith Lord.
Force heal would be one of the most useful powers in existence and aligns perfectly with jedi philosophy, it would absolutely be taught at the temple.
3
u/rmslashusr 13d ago
Too late, force induced Alzheimer’s is now my head canon. It explains EVERYTHING. Vader simply doesn’t remember Tatooine and Owen. Obiwan literally does not recall R2D2. That’s why princess lea has to reintroduce herself in the message, just like visiting Grandpa.
→ More replies (1)3
u/MajorSery 13d ago
I always figured that Force speed was pretty much always in use but the footage is slowed down so the audience can tell what's happening. And iirc they actually did have to do that in Phantom Menace even with regular human actors and not actual Jedi.

u/hoodie92 12d ago

1
u/Exotic_Economy_3861 11d ago

Not really. Force stasis was already a power in EU content. The problem fans had was with the diad teleportation and life saving and resurrection powers being tied to Force heal. You know, actual lore breaking concepts.
4
u/fredagsfisk Sith 13d ago
Force stasis was already a power in EU content.
So were all the other powers you mentioned as "lore breaking concepts", in some shape or form.
the diad
The Dyad is basically just a more powerful version of the Force Bond from KOTOR, or the Twin Bond that some Force-sensitive twins had.
teleportation
Legends Luke learned Fold Space from the Aing-Tii, being able to teleport himself and small objects, then never really used it again despite it being super useful. The Aing-Tii even used that technique instead of engines to move their ships and ambush slavers and pirates who came into their territory.
Some other characters (Leia, Abeloth, Nightsisters, a couple of Dread Masters, Vitiate, etc) also used this or other similar teleportation abilities.
life saving and resurrection powers being tied to Force heal.
Dark Transfer.

Kylo Ren freezing a blaster bolt was about where the sequel trilogy peaked. Was pretty much downhill from that scene onward.

u/Vryk0lakas 13d ago
That opening scene misled the shit out of me. I was so ready for an amazing movie.
1
u/Khemul 13d ago
I'm not so sure that was a new, unique skill so much as a weird way to portray the plot armor of Jedi/Sith past. It isn't like deflecting/absorbing blaster shots was rare. Some used lightsabers, so just waved a hand at the wall or ground. The whole opening of the Battle of Genossis was effectively a demonstration in blaster redirection. For some reason Kylo froze it in mid air, retaining all its energy and inertia. Which, I guess he was going for drip, so fair. Seems a bit impractical though in comparison. Which I guess was in character.

The marketing for this game felt really disconnected from the actual game. Like, this environment is never in the game, and he's always using blue sabers even though he starts with red in game, even in a scenario where he's still in Vader's control.
And the worst one, the main outfit they have him wearing in all these trailers? You don't even get it until you beat the entire game.

To be fair, at least Galen had a reason:
Two Jedi parents, taken in and trained by Vader himself, has a power level that matches (at least) Palpatine.
Rey didn't.
If Rey was Han and Leia's daughter everything about her would make sense. Rey is Anakin's grandkid so her power level makes sense. Han Solo is her dad so her knowing non Jedi stuff makes sense.
1
u/Exotic_Economy_3861 11d ago
That's not how the Force works though. Some people are simply more powerful than others
Rey does have a reason though. Her job is scavenging ships, it makes sense that she would have some understanding of how they work. She's even said that she's flown ships before, and she didn't even do a good job of flying. Plus Kylo ren was weakened.
And him having a reason doesn't make him not poorly written.

u/CrazyLegs17 Rebel 13d ago
Vader is on the far edge of the blast radius. Sure he's a badass but he's simply not foolish enough to stand next to Starkiller when he's detonating.

Defensive telekinesis is a very basic ability, and is why we don't see Force users getting into quick-draws over who can ragdoll the other first. It is worth noting, however, that the Starkiller Clone disintegrating enemies with the Force repulse is a game mechanic intended to keep the age rating down, as the one time he used it in the novelization of The Force Unleashed II, his targets were essentially pulverized into bloodied pulps.

Sometimes games, cartoons, and novels exaggerate their own ideas. In George's mind, the Jedi we see in the movies are not invincible, not always the smartest, and certainly not a one man army.
The scariest thing about Vader is that he is both ruthless and tactically brilliant. Meanwhile, the Emperor resembles a spider in a web. The most frightening aspect of him lies in the shadows, plotting and scheming.

Why did Vader need to look down/away during the wind? It's not like it's going to blow in his eyes.
