It’s possible they saw what he was going to say but then he went out and did something different. At least that’ll be the line they probably go with. Hard to know what the truth is unless Max admits it himself
I’m leaning towards they just didn’t check what he was going to say beforehand lmao (Brian Myers trained him and probably trusted him and he works backstage iirc).

Just a reminder that this is the same company that booked Pacman Jones hoping to capitalize on his notariety from --
\checks notes**
-- beating up a stripper and having one of his hangers-on shoot up the club, striking three people, paralyzing one.
29
u/KiteTheRunner The Heartbreak Skid 6h ago
"Picking up the bucks like a stripper in a club." I believe was a call commentary made after Pacman Jones threw a bunch of money into the ring and Hebner was picking bills up off the mat instead of paying attention. The shooting at the club was allegedly instigated when Pacman threw a bunch of 1$ bills onto the stage and the dancers started picking them up and he got pissed and demanded they give his money back while assaulting a dancer.

They're saying Max Caster has made lines that have reached air in which he claimed he was going commit rape.
It's less a 'what Max said was tame' and more being surprised that either TNA thought Caster's repeated problems was a product of being in AEW, or that Caster thought AEW was holding him back.

1.) If you're going to do this, you need some bite to the satire that goes a little beyond "LOL, aren't American sitcoms corny?" That wasn't really an institution begging to be brought down a few notches, then or now.
2.) Monty Python did this near-exact premise, with The Attila the Hun Show, except they had the sense to make the point and get out within 3 minutes.

This is just so stupid in so many ways.
- Why on earth did they not greenlight his raps beforehand?
- Why on earth did he need to be that edgy?
- There's no way in hell this would have been the reaction if the same joke would have been made about a country that doesn't start with S.
- What was he even thinking making a joke about a country starting with S in a promotion that very closely works with another promotion that very closely works with that country?
And, ironically, the scenario that I can think of that is less stupid is even worse: In that scenario, TNA did approve of his rap and thought nothing of it, and then the backlash came (probably some call from certain people), and they threw him under the bus for it.
155
u/SatisfactionLong270 7h ago
Is it even edgy to say bombs dropped in a place where bombs dropped. Like its a trope in rap songs for decades. I dont remember people being upset about bombs over Baghdad. Like Saudi Arabia kills journalist but were mad dude mentioned recent bombings? He didnt even say anything insane
→ More replies (8)22
u/PolarsAndPizzicato 7h ago edited 6h ago
There's a difference between generic bomb bars and using an attack that just happened as a punchline.
Caster has already faced backlash for making light of the Duke lacrosse rape case, so this isn't some unprecedented attack on artistic freedom.
And let's be honest, if he'd made a comparable joke at Palestinians' expense or joked about a school shooting right after it happened, I doubt we'd be hearing nearly as much about how it's just a rap trope.
You can question whether TNA cutting ties was proportionate without pretending the line was harmless.
96
u/cricketjoe 7h ago
"generic bomb bars" what do you think was going on in Baghdad when that song dropped?
→ More replies (4)20
u/theytracemikey 6h ago
B.o.B isn’t the best comparison cause it’s a whole somg with some messaging.
I think it’s more akin to the biggie line “Im getting paid, blowin up like the World Trade” it’s pretty much a throwaway line, not inherently offensive or meaningful.
I think somebody green lit it thinking the same thing then once it was public some higher ups made a call & here we are.
21
u/doubledipinyou 6h ago
That line is also referencing the 90s parking lot bomb and not 911
8
u/theytracemikey 6h ago
Right, it was pretty recent to the event when the song released & people died just like this situation

This is it. A lot of people are doing the “but people died” dance which yeah, sure, that’s horrific.
But that also isn’t the reason he likely got fired.
Like actually listening to what he said. “I drop bombs/ You don’t even have to fly to Riyadh” it’s fucking standard hip hop “bombs over Baghdad” type stuff that hip hop has been doing for ages.
There’s absolutely an argument over whether or not Caster should have chose self-preservation over being an edge lord, but it’s reaching to say it’s “offensive”. It’s not about caring about people dying, it’s all about not wanting to piss off the shareholders.

Even if you hate the Saudi government and the U.S.’s proxy states, most of the people who died were civilians, including Palestinians and South Asian migrants. It’s definitely in bad taste.
With that being said, I agree, WWE didn’t have any issue with bad taste when it partnered with government that ordered an American resident to be hacked to pieces

In my opinion it’s an overreaction. We’re going to fire this guy because he made a bad joke in a dis rap. That’s his whole schtick.
We know nobody was truly offended by this line in the company and 99% of the Twitter outrage is performative.
TNA would not have lost a viewer if they kept him employed nor will they gain a viewer by firing him. But they will stifle performers creatively and have them walk on eggshells, which if you’re TNA, is the last thing you should want in a company of their size.

We take full responsibility, let's also fire Max since its all his fault lol. They were so quick to post the rap to all their socials but now its no longer cool or funny now.
