u/SpinningHead 11d ago
Yeah, it would be easier to fix Earth than create a livable atmosphere on Mars.
1
u/Abject-Job7825 11d ago
its the other way around, I think we're already past the point of no return for global warming without any progress and consumerism has only gotten more radical, the wealth gap only seemed to slow down because a lot of those people like to keep anonymous or do complex tax evasion, everything has gotten so out of hand and the government is losing power to protect its own people, if they even wanted to do that job in the first place
1
u/SpinningHead 11d ago
Yes, but we are also nowhere near the point of engineering an Earth atmosphere on Mars. Doing Earth would be easier and thats not really a thing either.
2
u/ShortNefariousness2 10d ago
The fist step is to give Mars a magnetic field. How hard would that be?
1
u/Abject-Job7825 10d ago
I don't really want us to live on another earth, there's a challenge and achievement in living on other planets, we're not even going to survive 99% of them, so the ones where we could are special, if we started dreaming again like how elon influenced people at the start we might actually forgo differences and money and just make something happen, not an atmosphere at first just a dome of sorts. Our eyes deteriorate in space and there are many biological difficulties so tackling this one problem could advance our understanding of medicine and health. Just like how Nasa technology is behind so many of our modern world: touch screens, gps, solar event monitoring, telescopes, robot and rover technology, advancements in computer chips, solar energy, battery technology, etc etc.

u/AstronomerDramatic36 12d ago
No matter how badly we fuck up Earth, it'll still be more habitable than Mars.
If an outside force takes out Earth, there's a decent chance Mars is affected as well. For all the work and cost, you're not even diversifying that much.

2500? We will be lucky if there are a few breeding pairs left by then. They better hurry up and evolve to live in 150 degree heat.
1
u/Elegant-Vegetable-88 8d ago
That's not how it works buddy during the Jurassic period greenhouse gases were up to 365% higher than they are today. I wouldn't be worrying about it
2
u/Mr_Daniel_Lumis 8d ago
Who is worrying? I don't give a shit if we live or not. It's a matter of time either way. The problem is if we are actually causing the planet to become unlivable for our offspring shouldn't we try and do something about it? Denying science and listening to the experts on Reddit will guarantee we do nothing.

mmmh, weren't there only five recorded ELEs/mass extinction on Earth (sixth perhaps ongoing)?
4
u/Able-End-339 12d ago
Yeah, the Mars thing has never really made sense. It’s like arguing it would be harder to fix a beat up 97 Camry with a blown head gasket than create an entire new car from a bare block and some sheet metal with at best a rough idea what a car even looks like (there’s probably a Cybertruck joke here somewhere). Somebody could do the second one with unlimited time and probably still end up in a worse place than what a half decent mechanic and machinist could do with the first.
4
u/1K-Year-Egg 12d ago
“(there’s probably a Cybertruck joke here somewhere)”
The Cybertruck was clearly designed to operate on Mars, not Earth.
It is, after all, prone to rapid rusting and notoriously sensitive to moisture, and Mars has neither oxygen, nor significant water. Its suspension is, moreover, burning garbage, but it might do better in Mars’s weaker gravity.

Elon is a fraud who became the worlds richest man selling dreams he can't deliver on and creating a super genius persona to sell it. Many of us have seen through the curtain, many havent, but when they do Elon's house of cards is going to collapse and take a lot of market value and retirement savings accounts with him.

u/Unique-Tank9814 10d ago
Almost every single venture Musk has embarked on has been successful though.
Tesla
PayPal
SpaceX
Solar City
Neuralink
StarlinkThe list goes on. These are all pretty successful dreams he has delivered on…
1
u/Environmental-Hour75 9d ago
Only tesla is profitable, spacex, xAI, X, all operate at a loss, boring co, neuralink are pre-revenue (don't generate any). Solar city was never profitable and had 1.5 Billion in debt when Tesla bought it. Paypal had never had a profitable quarter when musk was ousted as CEO in 2000. Peter Thiel fixed it, and sold to ebay in 2002, ans only after that did it turn a profit... with a much different operating model than what Musk had championed.
Back to Telsa, its profitable but with a price to earninga ratio of 350, its not turning near the profits it should. For comparison toyota is six times more profitable than tesla and trades at a P/E ratio of 8.

Seems like we should figure out how to take care of the planet indefinitely and sustainably before leaving so we don’t create a habit of burning out planets across the galaxy. Of course the humans in Avatar pretty much acted like how we would act in that situation so I guess it’s inevitable.
1
u/idkuhhhhhhh5 12d ago
While I agree that the environment of Earth is massively important, I don’t really understand why everyone is saying we need to choose one or the other, environmental protection and space aren’t mutually exclusive. Especially given how much advancement in battery, communication, solar panel technology, radiological shielding, microprocessors, medical scanning equipment, and thermal regulation systems have come directly from space exploration programs.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying this to defend Elon (he’s a POS), but it’s intellectually dishonest to say that efforts spent on space exploration and settlement preclude environmental conservation. His employees (I don’t work for SpaceX but I am an Aerospace guy, so like me) are aerospace engineers, we have no clue how to restore watersheds, soil quality, and greenery. We do know how to make things on earth and fly them around.
Plus, arguably the best thing we can do for our species is figure out asteroid redirection and mining. We could sustain massive industrial expansion while simultaneously shutting down mines on earth that pollute unimaginable amounts of toxic emissions. Asteroid harvesting is also easier than a mars colony, but would have insanely positive results for us as a planet.
2
u/NinjaSellsHonours 12d ago
SpaceX has a massive polluting effect. Humans traveling to Mars is impractical and useless. The only thing they are doing is launching satellites which is arguably not great either, and a lot of them are going to burn up on reentry which has troubling possibilities for the ozone layer.
I would park all space exploration for 100 years until some kind of real breakthroughs show some promise of getting us somewhere. Right now we have basically nothing meaningful to work with beyond what got us to the moon.
1
u/Unique-Tank9814 10d ago
SpaceX has actually massively reduced space pollution being generated which was becoming a major problem of single use launch vehicles. A single SpaceX launch is equivalent to the annual emissions of like 300 cars. It’s not really that much.

Musk is pushing for Mars because even with all the money he has, he will never have any real control on Earth.
If he destroys Earth to get enough resources to drag a colony to Mars he can live out his dream of being a remote despot controlling the lives of the suckers he conned into becoming disposable slave labor.

Oh boy... I'm going to get downvoted for saying this because people have a real problem with black and white thinking... but here I go.
Elon Musk is a douche there's no doubt about it. Let nothing I'm about to say make you think I think otherwise. But I do believe Tesla has been the catalyst for electrifying our fleet. The existing auto manufacturers were never going to do it and many of them have been dragged into it kicking and screaming.
IC cars account for ~20% of greenhouse gas emissions (more like 30% if we include industrial transportation). It is estimated that roughly half of new cars sold will be electric sometime next decade.
So yea, he's a complete douche. But I don't see how his primary crime is trashing our planet and turning the earth into a toxic burning ashtray.
If it is true that Elon Musk is even partially responsible for the adoption of electric cars, then I honestly can't think of anyone or anything that has done more to combat climate change. Can you?

1
u/idkuhhhhhhh5 12d ago
I understand that these are fields that are not spoken about much outside of academia, but it makes me incredibly sad to see misconceptions like this about one of the few good things humanity has done.
Re-entry of every satellite megaconstellation we have and plan to launch, all at once, would be roughly equivalent to one year of natural meteoric dust accumulation. Since we banned CFCs, the ozone layer has been recovering steadily, despite deorbiting massive amounts of satellites, the Salyut 7, Mir, Tiangong 1 and 2 space stations, and countless upper stages for orbital insertion.
As far as breakthroughs, we already have them. We already have the technologies required for advanced space travel, just looking at the materials and mechanics of how the ISS works compared to “what got us to the moon” demonstrates how far we have come, it’s akin to looking at a 727 and acting like it’s the same as a 787.
Either way, the prospect of asteroid harvest alone would solve our material needs for decades, we could give the earth a rest for resource harvesting for a very long time, and it’s not just a pipedream. The lack of “breakthrough” hasn’t been of capability, it’s of funding, and if we pulled funding from helping Israel murder people, padding the wallet of the president, and fossil fuel subsidies, we could have been beating SpaceX’s pace for a long time.
1
u/Brilliant_Pun 12d ago
You know, for a time, tired movie franchises got an "in Space" installment to try to rejuvenate them. As a result, we got "Leprechaun 4: In space" and "Jason X". Does this mean we're going to get a real life equivalent of Leprachaun in the Hood involving an Elmo project?

The only reason it really works is because investors swarm his companies and see their share prices rocket and make money on paper.
How long does Tesla really have left after the CyberFlop.
